2 PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS - STADE RENNAIS FC Feature Preview Olympique Lyonnais attempt to arrest a run of four straight defeats in all competitions when they host Stade Rennais on Sunday evening. OL had started the season incredibly brightly, winning four matches in a row before their current run which has seen them drop down from the Champions League to the Europa League and slide down the Ligue 1 table. Clément Grenier is back in training after the hamstring injury which forced the playmaker to drop out of the France squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers in Georgia and Belarus and Rémi Garde could certainly do with Grenier's playmaking talents as OL attempt to right the listing ship. Bafétimbi Gomis - last season's top scorer with 16 league goals - and former Rennes man Jimmy Briand have been re-integrated into the squad with the transfer window now shut, although at the time of writing it was unclear whether either of the French international attackers would make Sunday's squad. Gomis said last week: "I'm happy to be back involved. I'll take what I'm given and it's a bit like I'm an additional signing, one that's involved almost by default. I'll do my best to integrate my new team as quickly as possible. There's no conflict, I think now I have to work hand in hand with club president Jean-Michel Aulas. But after what was done and said, notably that I didn't fit into the economic and sporting plans, it's not worth envisaging talking about a contract extension." The striker joined from OL's local rivals Saint-Etienne on a five-year deal in 2009 and from next January will be free to negotiate with other clubs. Bernard Lacombe, the record scorer in French league history and adviser to Aulas, believes Gomis will be able to make a contribution, although warns of excessive expectations too soon. Lacombe said: "The problem with him was a financial problem not a football problem. How can you talk about being a football problem when a player has scored between 15 and 20 goals per season over several seasons? The question we could ask of ourselves is should we have taken him on the pre-season training camp to Tignes? Maybe. We didn't and maybe it wasn't the right decision. "When he comes back he won't be Zorro and people shouldn't expect miracles from him. Getting up to match speed is the hardest thing to get back and along with Jimmy they won't be 100% from the off. People need to understand that. People mustn't forget that with Bafé the issue was only a financial one. It was difficult for Bafé, for the club, for everybody. Working with the coach again won't be a problem for him; Rémi Garde is not the sort of man to hold grudges." Rennes approach Sunday's match in a mood of optimism, a point above OL in the table after two wins and a draw in their first four games under new coach Philippe Montanier. A flurry of late transfer activity has given the Rennes squad a very different look: top earner Mevlut Erding has left for Saint-Etienne and among those to have come in are Foued Kadir, on loan from Marseille, and Emerson, the former Lille left-back. Kadir's task will be to man the supply lines for Nelson Oliveira, the Portuguese international forward who has scored three goals in as many starts since his season-long loan move from Benfica. An option to buy clause is contained in the deal for the striker, one Rennes will be keen to make up should the 22-year-old - a starter for Portugal in their 3-1 friendly loss to Brazil in midweek? maintain his sparkling form. Kadir worked with Montanier at Valenciennes and has moved to Brittany with the aim of returning to his best after a disappointing few months at OM. Kadir said: "My best position is playing off the forward but I'll left the coach choose where he wants to use me. Whether it's on the left, the right or down the middle it doesn't matter. The most important thing is for me to rediscover the joy of playing. Adapting here won't be a problem." Romain Alessandrini, working his way back to full fitness after a serious knee injury, went public recently with complaints over his contractual situation but Montanier says the player has been knuckling down on the training field: "He's focused on his comeback and that's the main thing. OL have won 20 times, there have been 15 draws and Rennes have been victorious on six occasions. - Last season OL were 2-0 winners in Week 38 to seal a third-placed finish (Lisandro 23' pen. and Grenier 69'). - That 2-0 win last season was OL's first at home over Rennes since a 2-1 success in January Rennes had been unbeaten in seven trips to the Stade de Gerland (2W, 5D). -TEAM TIES: OL's Yoann Gourcuff, Arnold Mvuemba, Gaël Danic and Jimmy Briand are all former Rennes players. Rennes' Jean II Makoun formerly featured for Lyon. - LYON: - GENERAL: OL enter Week 5 8th in the table with six points from four games (2W, 2L). - OL have lost their last four competitive games in all competitions, conceding seven goals and scoring just once, in the 2-1 loss at Evian in Week 4. - Kévin Bérigaud (8' and 34') scored for Evian, while Jordan Ferri (49') pulled one back for OL with his first L1 goal. - OL team v Evian: Lopes; Lopes, Koné, Bisevac, Bedimo; Mvuemba (Malbranque 66'), Gonalons; Ferri (Bahlouli 82'), Gourcuff (Benzia 45'), Fekir; Lacazette - OL finished third in the campaign, returning to the podium places after ending the previous campaign fourth. The season marks their only failure to finish in the top three in Ligue 1 since finishing sixth in Bafétimbi Gomis top-scored with 16 goals - the fourth-highest individual tally in the French top flight - while veteran Steed Malbranque notched a team-high seven assists. - OL play at the Stade Municipal de Gerland, but work has already started on the club's new home, the 61,000-capacity Stade des Lumières, which is due to be completed in It will be one of 12 venues hosting matches at EURO Clément Grenier collected his player of the year award recently as voted for by journalists from France Football magazine. - OL had not conceded a goal in four competitive matches this season prior to losing the first leg of their Champions League play-off (see below). - HOME FORM: OL beat Nice 4-0 in Week 1 but lost 1-0 to Reims in Week 3 in filthy conditions which caused the start of the second half to be delayed. - OL had the sixth best home record in L1 last season with 37 points from 19 games (11W, 4D, 4L). - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: OL dropped down into the Europa League group stage after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Real Sociedad in the second leg of the play-off. Carlos Vela (67', 90+1') scored both the hosts' goals. - OL lost the first leg 2-0 with boyhood Lyon fan Antoine Griezmann and Haris Seferovic scoring Sociedad's goals. - OL reached the play-off with a 2-0 aggregate third qualifying round win over Grasshoppers of Zurich. Bisevac (65') scored the only goal of the home leg and the following week Grenier (81') scored the only goal of the away leg, set up by Lisandro Lopez in his final appearance for the club before joining Qatari club Al-Gharafa for 7.2 million euros. - EUROPA LEAGUE: OL have been drawn alongside Real Betis, Guimaraes and Rijeka in Group I of the Europa League. Bisevac did play the full 90 in a 3-0 win over Wales. - Bakary Koné played the full game in Burkina Faso's 1-0 win over Gabon as his country moved on to the next stage of the qualifying process. - Anthony Lopes was on the bench for Portugal in the 3-1 friendly loss to Brazil. - Samuel Umtiti, Jordan Ferri and Yassine Benzia all started for France's Undr-21s in the 4-0 win over Kazakhstan. Farés Bahlouli came on for the last 23 minutes. Umtiti started again in the 2-1 win over Belarus. Bahlouli, Ferri and Benzia all came on as subs. - TEAM NEWS: Bafétimbi Gomis and Jimmy Briand are available for selection for the first time this season having been re-integrated into the first-team squad. Rémy Vercoutre (knee) is still out. Rachid Ghezzal (back), Gaël Danic (groin) and Mahamadou Dabo (thigh) have all been missing of late. Grenier (hamstring) was back in training early in the week. Sunday may come too soon for Yoann Gourcuff (hamstring). - RENNES: - GENERAL: Rennes enter Week 5 fifth in the table with seven points from four games (2W, 1D, 1L). - In Week 4 Rennes drew 0-0 at home to Lille and kept their first clean sheet under Philippe Montanier.
