2 PREVIEW : AC AJACCIO - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Feature Preview Relieved to see the January transfer window slam shut, Olympique Lyonnais can now focus on their trip to Corsica to face AC Ajaccio as they seek to keep the pressure on Paris Saint-Germain in the Ligue 1 title race. OL coach Rémi Garde must have feared losing the majority of his senior players at one point before the winter transfer market ended, with the likes of Bafétimbi Gomis, Lisandro López, Yoann Gourcuff and Jimmy Briand all linked with moves away from the club. In the end, the only senior players to depart last month were Michel Bastos and Fabián Monzón. The latter has failed to make an impact since signing in the summer and will not be greatly missed as he heads on loan to Fluminense in Brazil. In contrast, Bastos and his dangerous left foot will be missed, but Garde will still be relieved to see most of his squad remain intact. "It wasn't easy to work during the mercato," he said. "The players were really quite distracted by it all. We lost Michel, who brought us a lot as a player. Losing a player like him means we have not reinforced but we turn the page now. I want to work and help this group progress. There are a lot of young players and I hope they realise that we have two beautiful challenges to look forward to in the coming months, with Ligue 1 and the Europa League." After a slow start to 2013, Lyon appeared to turn a corner last weekend in their 2-0 win at Valenciennes, as early goals by Gueïda Fofana and Gomis - his 12th of the season - helped them to a fourth victory in five away outings. Their only away setback in that time was the 1-0 defeat away to PSG, but Lyon remained neck and neck with the capital club coming into the weekend and they can be confident of getting a result against a struggling Ajaccio side, even if Garde is naturally cautious. Lyon will be without Lisandro and Briand for the game - the latter saw a loan move to AS Monaco collapse at the last minute - and Garde believes that Ajaccio are steadily improving under their new coach Albert Émon. "Licha has not yet recovered from his calf injury, and Jimmy will not be in the travelling party either," said Garde. "This Ajaccio team have drawn their last three matches. From afar, it looks like they are beginning to turn things around since the change of coach in Albert Émon. Like every away match, this will be difficult." Émon, who replaced the sacked Alex Dupont over the winter break, has reason to be encouraged by his team?s performances in the New Year. However, last week?s 1-1 draw away to Evian-Thonon-Gaillard in Annecy means they have now gone six matches without a win in all competitions and have won just once in their last ten league outings. Hindered by a two-point deduction handed down following incidents after last season?s 1-1 draw against Lyon at the Stade François-Coty, the Corsicans remain too close to the relegation zone for comfort and have this week seen no-nonsense Algerian defender Carl Medjani depart for Monaco. However, Émon was largely successful in the January window, with last week?s signings of Matthieu Chalmé and Dennis Oliech - who scored on his debut against Evian - being joined by the experienced Ronald Zubar just before the deadline. Zubar, who joins from Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, played under Émon at Marseille and will help fill the gap vacated by Medjani. "Even although it has been a long time since I saw this player, I know that Ronald likes to defend and has above average technical qualities," said Émon, who hopes to welcome back Mehdi Mostefa and Chahir Belghazouani after their returns from the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. 3 -HISTORY: There have been 11 previous meetings of Ajaccio and Lyon in Corsica in the top flight, with Ajaccio winning four, Lyon winning three, and the remaining four encounters ending in draws. -Ajaccio have scored 19 goals in this fixture to Lyon's 16. -Lyon are unbeaten in their last five visits to the Stade François-Coty since a 4-3 defeat in February 1973, 40 years ago. -OL last won in Ajaccio in March 2006, when Juninho, Fred and Karim Benzema netted in a 3-1 victory for the visitors. -Last season's corresponding fixture ended in a 1-1 draw on May 13, 2012, on the penultimate weekend of the campaign. Bafétimbi Gomis (53') gave OL the lead, only for Eduardo (58'-pen) to pull Ajaccio level. Yoann Gourcuff (50') of Lyon and Anthony Lippini (90+2') of Ajaccio were both sent off. Incidents at the end of that game resulted in Ajaccio starting this season with a two-point deduction. A third penalty point was suspended. -Earlier this season, Lyon beat Ajaccio 2-0 at the Stade de Gerland in Week 5, on September 16, Dejan Lovren (25') and Lisandro López (75') scored OL's goals. -The biggest win in this fixture remains a 4-1 success for Ajaccio in November AC AJACCIO -GENERAL: Ajaccio came into Week 23 in 15th place in Ligue 1 with 22 points from 22 games. They were two points clear of the relegation zone, and three points behind 13th-placed Bastia. -Ajaccio have won five, drawn nine and lost eight of their games to date. They have gone five league matches without a win, and six matches in all competitions. They have also won just once in their last ten Ligue 1 outings. -After 22 games last season, Ajaccio were 16th but also had 22 points to their name. -Under previous coach Alex Dupont, the ACA were eighth after Week 1 and rose to ninth after Week 7. However, they have otherwise spent all of their time in the bottom half of the table, dropping to a low of 17th after the 3-0 defeat at Montpellier in Week 16. -Last weekend, Ajaccio drew 1-1 at Evian TG FC. Dennis Oliech (36) gave them the lead in Annecy, only for Daniel Wass (53') to level for the home side. -The Ajaccio line-up against Evian: Ochoa; Chalmé, Saad, Poulard, Bouhours; Pierazzi (c), Lasne; Oliech, Cavalli (Faty, 77'), André (Sammaritano, 69'); Mutu (Delort, 88'). -Ajaccio have scored 23 goals this season. Seven clubs have conceded more coming into the weekend, but they have made some progress defensively compared to last season, when they let in a total of 61 goals, and had conceded 39 after 22 games. -The Corsicans have kept eight clean sheets, including three in their first four matches. They have conceded three goals or more on five occasions. -Guillermo Ochoa is the only Ajaccio player to have started every league game this season. Yoann Poulard and Samuel Bouhours have both started 20 games. -Paul Lasne has made ten of his 13 appearances from the bench, making him Ajaccio's most frequently used substitute this season. -Ajaccio have one of the worst disciplinary records in Ligue 1 this season, and lay 17th in the Fair Play table coming into the weekend. They have received 44 yellow cards and three reds. He has previously played in Ligue 1 for RC Strasbourg and FC Nantes. -HOME FORM: Ajaccio have one of the worst home records in Ligue 1, having taken just 13 points from ten home games so far this season. Only two clubs (Evian and Nancy) had picked up fewer points in front of their own fans coming into the weekend. -Ajaccio have won three, drawn four and lost three of their ten home games to date. -Fewer goals have been scored at the Stade François-Coty than at any other Ligue 1 venue this season, with the exception of Bordeaux's Stade Chaban-Delmas coming into the weekend. The ACA have scored eight goals and conceded eight at home. -They have beaten Evian (2-0, Wk 4), Brest (1-0, Wk 7) and Reims (2-0, Wk 17). They have also lost to Marseille (0-2, Wk 11), Sochaux (0-1, Wk 13) and Rennes (2-4, Wk 19). -Ajaccio were unbeaten in their last 11 home games of last season, winning five and drawing six. -Ajaccio have the lowest average attendance in Ligue 1, of 6,959. A high of 10,339 watched the derby against Bastia (Wk 9) but just 5,843 watched the ACA beat Reims (Wk 17). -COUPE DE LA LIGUE: For the second season running, Ajaccio were eliminated in the Round of 32, losing 2-1 away to AC Arles-Avignon of Ligue 2. -COUPE DE FRANCE: Ajaccio were knocked out by FC Rouen 1899, of the third tier, in the Round of 64 last month. They trailed leaders Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference and sat three points ahead of Marseille in third. -Lyon have won 13, drawn six and lost three of their games to date. They were unbeaten in their first six matches of the season, and are currently on a run of four league games without defeat. -After 22 games last season, Rémi Garde's side were fourth in the table with 39 points, ten points behind leaders PSG. This is OL's best start to a season since , when they were top after 22 games with 43 points. However, they have not had this many points this far into a season since their double-winning campaign, when they led with 45 points after 22 games. -Garde's side sat seventh in the table after Week 1, but have not been lower than third since. They have spent a total of nine weeks in first place, but slipped back to second after drawing 0-0 at home with Evian TG FC a fortnight ago. -Lyon won 2-0 at Valenciennes FC last weekend. They have failed to score in four games, and have scored three goals or more on six separate occasions, including in the 5-2 home win against SC Bastia in Week 11. -Bafétimbi Gomis is Lyon's leading scorer with 12 Ligue 1 goals, followed by Lisandro López, who has six. Gomis has 17 in all competitions, while Lisandro has nine in total. -Gomis has scored 84 Ligue 1 goals in his career. Of all the players currently active in Ligue 1, only FC Lorient's Ludovic Giuly (85) has more to his name. Gomis has now reached double figures in seven consecutive seasons. -Steed Malbranque has provided seven assists, the most in Ligue 1 along with Mathieu Valbuena and Dimitri Payet coming into the weekend. Clément Grénier and Alexandre Lacazette have both laid on three. -Lyon have conceded just 18 goals this season. Only three clubs had conceded fewer coming into Week 23. They have kept nine clean sheets, including in each of their last two games. The 3-0 defeat at Toulouse (Wk 14) is the only game in which they have conceded more than twice. -At the same stage last season, Lyon had conceded 25 goals. -OL have conceded only six goals in the first half of games this season. -No Lyon player has started every game this season, although Maxime Gonalons and Bafétimbi Gomis have both started 21 of the 22 games. Gomis is the only player to have appeared in every match, having also come off the bench once. -All ten of Yassine Benzia's appearances have come from the bench. Gueïda Fofana has come off the bench on eight occasions. -OL were fifth in the Fair Play table coming into Week 23. They have had 32 yellow cards, and three reds. Dejan Lovren was sent off against Bastia in Week 11 and again versus Nice in Week 19, while Mouhamadou Dabo saw red at Saint-Etienne (Wk 16). -Lyon have completed an average of 514 passes per game this season, a tally bettered only by PSG and Lille coming into the weekend. -Maxime Gonalons has made 1444 passes this season, and has completed 1291 of those.
