2 PREVIEW : AS MONACO FC - STADE RENNAIS FC Feature Preview With leading scorer Radamel Falcao missing due to injury, AS Monaco FC host Stade Rennais FC at the Stade Louis II on Saturday afternoon looking to cement their position in the top three in Ligue 1 and put pressure on the teams above them. Claudio Ranieri's side have lost much of their early season rhythm, but they did get back to winning ways last weekend, defeating FC Nantes 1-0 at the Stade de la Beaujoire thanks to a deflected strike in the second half from midfielder Mounir Obbadi. That result moved the principality club a safe distance away from the chasing pack and they know that a win against Rennes will see them climb provisionally back into second place above Lille, and to within two points of Paris Saint-Germain before the leaders play Lyon on Sunday. Monaco may be on course to fulfill their stated objective of Champions League qualification, but their performance against Nantes was overshadowed by a strangely profligate display in front of goal by Colombian star Falcao, who was substituted in the second half as a result. He still sat joint top of the Ligue 1 scorers' charts coming into the weekend with nine goals, but after netting seven in his first seven games, he has found the net just twice in his subsequent seven matches, and now a thigh injury means he will miss the meeting with the Bretons. "Falcao has a slight thigh problem," admitted Ranieri. "We will not take any risks so he will not play on Saturday. We hope to have him back for the trip to Nice (on Tuesday). It is a minor injury but we need to be careful. "Like all players, he always wants to play, but he understands that it is better for him if he rests. Against Nantes, I thought he linked up well with his teammates. I took him off as a precaution." Monaco are also without Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, who has an ankle ligament injury, but Ranieri welcomes back Geoffrey Kondogbia, Lucas Ocampos and Fabinho after the trio sat out the win in Nantes due to suspension. The Ligue 2 champions are bidding to extend an unbeaten record at home, having won five and drawn two of seven games at the Stade Louis II this season despite the difficulties that come with playing in front of some of the lowest crowds in the top flight. "With or without our fans, the motivation must be the same, the objective always the same: to win," said Portugal midfielder João Moutinho. "We try everything to get people to come along and help us. But, regardless, we give our best. The mood in the squad is good and now we are looking to build on the win against Nantes. Rennes will be complicated opponents. They are an aggressive team who play deep but have players who are very quick on the counterattack." While Monaco managed to hit the ground running this season despite the many changes to the playing staff over the summer, Rennes are going through a difficult transitional period under new coach Philippe Montanier. The former Valenciennes and Real Sociedad boss saw his side squander a lead to draw 1-1 with Bordeaux last weekend, and they have won just once in eight outings, although that was a stunning 5-0 success at Toulouse. As a result, the Bretons came into the weekend in the bottom half, with this their worst start to a season since 2006, but a victory at the Stade Louis II could see them climb as high as seventh. "I think we're doing ok. We are just not being rewarded for our efforts," said Montanier. "If we want to achieve anything at Monaco, we need to be good in every department for more than 90 minutes. We are obviously very wary of their quality. They are a nice team to watch and they score goals. "Monaco are the best team we will have played since the season began. They have won 27, Rennes have won six, and the remaining four encounters have been drawn. - Monaco have scored 75 goals in this fixture to Rennes' The last meeting of the clubs at the Stade Louis II came in April 2011, Monaco winning 1-0 with a goal from Georgie Welcome (72') in front of a crowd of 6, Monaco have won their last three home meetings with Rennes. The Bretons last won in the principality in March 2008, when Mickaël Pagis (90+2') secured a 2-1 win. Petter Hansson (19') had given Rennes the lead in that game before Massamba Lô Sambou (37') equalised. They have won eight, drawn five and lost one of their games to date and lie five points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. They also sat five points clear of Olympique de Marseille in fourth at the start of the weekend. - At the same stage of their last Ligue 1 campaign, in , Monaco sat 17th with just two wins and 14 points. Nabil Dirar, who has not played since suffering a knee injury on the final day of last season, is back in training. Ranieri has said that he could feature in Monaco's last game of 2013 against Valenciennes on December STADE RENNAIS FC - GENERAL: Rennes came into in 11th place in the table with 18 points from 14 games. They have won four, drawn six and lost four of their games to date, and lay three points behind Saint-Etienne in sixth but just three above Montpellier in 16th ahead of the weekend. - This time last season, Rennes were eighth in the table with 22 points. They have not been this low in the table after 14 games since , when they sat in 13th place, but had 19 points. In terms of points gained, this is Rennes' worst start since , when they had 17 points at the same stage. - Rennes' current position of 11th is as low as they have been all season. They reached a high of fourth after Week 3. - In their last outing, Philippe Montanier's side drew 1-1 at home to Girondins de Bordeaux. Remarkably, that was a 5-0 victory at Toulouse. - Rennes have scored 17 goals so far this season, giving them the joint seventh-best attack coming into the weekend. With the exception of the 5-0 win at Toulouse in Week 11, they have not scored more than twice in any game in They have failed to score at all in five matches. - Nelson Oliveira is the team's leading scorer with seven goals, followed by Foued Kadir with five. Romain Alessandrini should be fine despite taking a knock to the ankle against Bordeaux. Vincent Pajot suffered a hamstring injury playing for the reserves last weekend. Abdoulaye Doucouré is currently recovering from a serious knee injury but has been training and could play for the reserves this weekend. - TRIVIA: Jérémy Toulalan has only ever scored one goal in 257 Ligue 1 appearances.
