9 v 9 Discussion
Learning outcomes Understand the benefits of 9 v 9 games Iden4fy the needs of players and deliver appropriate prac4cal ac4vi4es Recognise the importance of player development, within Na4onal Football Development Structure How to Condi4on 9 v 9 games prac4cally How to organise the 9 v 9 format (rules)
Grassroots Football Across Wales Implementation Date Age Group Number of Players Size of Pitch (length x width) Start of 2009/10 Under 7 4v4 No Goalkeepers Start of 2009/10 Under 8 5v5 GK Introduced Size of Ball 30x20 yards 3 30x20 yards 3 Start of 2010/11 Under 9 6v6 40x30 yards 3 Start of 2011/12 Under 10 7v7 60x40 yards 4 Start of 2011/12 Under 11 8v8 60x40 yards 4 The maximum goal size for all age groups is 12ft x 6ft. It is highly recommended that at Under 7 and Under 8 a smaller goal is utilized. This can be achieved through using cones, placing a 12ft x 6ft Mini Goal face down or using specific smaller goals (such as pop up goals).
Grassroots Football Across Wales Age Group Under 7 Effective from start of 2009/10 season Under 8 Effective from start of 2009/10 season Under 9 Effective from start of 2010/11 season Under 10 Effective from start of 2011/12 season Under 11 Effective from start of 2011/12 season Distance from Goal Line to Edge of Area (Length) NO Goal Area Width of Penalty Area NO Goal Area 5 yards 10 yards 8 yards 15 yards 10 yards 20 yards 10 yards 20 yards
Benefits of the 9 v 9 game Smaller pitch and player numbers will allow players to be more involved in the game. Players will spend more 4me on the ball on average than they would in an 11v11 game. More repe44on should allow for developing greater technique and being more comfortable on the ball. The smaller pitch should ensure the game puts a more realis4c physical demand on the players based on their physical maturity.
Benefits of the 9 v 9 game The size of the goals will have the double effect of giving goalkeepers a fair chance and forcing players to actually beat the goalkeeper, rather than geqng their goals at a young age from hiqng the ball where the goalkeeper cannot reach.
Tactical challenges for the 9 v 9 coach Defence The choice of a back two, three or four? A two man defence is susceptible to goals from midfield runners and could be pulled apart by clever forwards. However, the two man defence does allow another man to be placed in midfield which could hand the team control of the match. The three man defence is solid and allows cover from both flanks and the centre, but may leave the team exposed in midfield.
Tactical challenges for the 9 v 9 coach Midfield Then there is the choice of a midfield three, four or even two. What are the pros & cons? Attack 1 Up, 2 Up or 3 Up. What are the pros & cons? What are the implications?
Systems of play What will you play? (Striker dropped off or high) (flat or diamond midfield) (flat or diamond midfield) (Midfield triangle pointing forward or backwards) (Midfield triangle pointing forward or backwards) The players need to understand how the system used relates to the 11 v 11 game. How?

Rules For The 9v9 Format Size of goals: 16 ft (width) x 7 ft (height). Size of pitch: Width: 44 yards - this is the width of the 11v11 penalty area. Length: Penalty box to penalty box if played on an 11v11 pitch or 70 yards if played on a dedicated 9v9 pitch. Penalty area: 28 yards wide and 12 yards from goal line. Penalty spot: 9 yards from goal line. Goal area: A goal area is not necessary, but goal kicks are to be taken approximately 4 yards from goal line. A painted marker 4 yards from each post is sufficient for guidance. For dedicated 9v9 pitches a goal area can be marked out. This is to be 4 yards from goal line and 4 yards from each goal post towards the corner.
Rules For The 9v9 Format Substitutes: Maximum squad for match is 14 9 players plus 5 substitutes (roll-on roll-off with the referees permission). Off-side and penalty rules apply as normal. Playing time: 35mins each way as normal. Ball size: size 4 as normal. Those moving from mini football should also note that the goalkeeper cannot pick-up with hands any pass back from an outfield player on his team. The ball must be played. Anything not covered above, then the League and FAW rules apply
