EDITORIAL Joseph S. Blatter FIFA President With more than three million spectators in the stadiums, some 20 million crowding the fan miles throughout Germany and billions of viewers glued to the television, the 18 th FIFA World Cup between 9 June and 9 July enthralled the entire world. For one month, we were all witness to the extent to which football can make the whole world a much happier, more peaceful and more united place. I only wish that this World Cup effect would extend far beyond the tournament itself. Italy will now be adding a fourth star to their association s emblem. Cunningly instructed by coach Marcello Lippi and inspired by captain Fabio Cannavaro, the azzurri tackled and contested their way through the games with great skill, a stroke of luck and a touch of attacking football. The new policy for referees, introduced in 2002, also paid off. Fewer referees but more appointments, well rehearsed trios, combined with comprehensive supervision and training since early 2005 led to good overall results, apart from one interim lapse. The average number of player injuries reached a record low as a result of the strict application of the Laws. The last red card went to the talented Zinedine Zidane, football virtuoso par excellence for the last decade and the tournament s best player, who should have earned a more glorious exit. The stadiums were almost always packed to capacity with fans who celebrated together before and after the matches. Police and security forces were ever-present but discreet, always in the role of friend and helper. The precautions taken by the German government were the principal reason why there were no major incidents at this World Cup which is no mean feat in an undertaking of this size and importance. Looking back on these World Cup finals, which were exceptional and ground-breaking in many ways, it is the positive aspects that prevail. The fan fests organised by FIFA with the various venues became symbolic of the powerful attraction of football. Although Germany s major triumph was not on the Fan fest in Germany field of play, Jurgen Klinsmann s team will go down in history as the people s world champions, the organising committee as world champion organisers and the Germans themselves as world champion hosts. Even the weather smiled on the world of football, with summer and the sun beating down from beginning to end. Thank you for making sure that 2006 was a time to make wonderful friends. We can already start looking forward to an equally vibrant festival in South Africa and on African soil. AUGUST

A fabulous festival with ecstatic fans Never before has a World Cup had such an electrifying atmosphere as this year s tournament in Germany. It was a fan festival designed to delight the crowds and make countless friends. However, the football in this World Cup, won by Italy in a tense and dramatic final against France, was rather run-of-the-mill. BY ANDREAS WERZ AND GEORG HEITZ Italian euphoria: the azzurri win their fourth World Cup title in Berlin on 9 July EXTRA TIME THE FINAL Six years ago, on 2 July 2000, David Trezeguet had been hailed as France s hero. His golden goal to make it 2-1 against Italy in the final of EURO 2000 had snatched the trophy for les bleus. This time, on 9 July 2006, Trezeguet would have preferred for the ground at Berlin s Olympic Stadium to swallow him up. He was the only one to miss in the penalty shoot-out in the World Cup final, after the teams had ended 120 minutes of play tied at 1-1. Once again, their opponents were Italy and many of Trezeguet s opponents in Berlin were his Juventus team-mates. It had promised to be a special match for the striker with Argentinian roots, but it turned out to be a nightmare. It was simply not David Trezeguet s World Cup. France coach Raymond Domenech had assigned the role of lone striker to Thierry Henry while Trezeguet had spent most of the time warming the substitutes bench. And when finally allowed to play, he turned out to be his opponents saviour, allowing Italy to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time since 1982 and the fourth time ever. In this final, in which France had been the better team, Trezeguet was not the only tragic figure. In his very last professional appearance, Zinedine Zidane converted a penalty which crashed down off the crossbar and over the goal line only to lose the plot in extra time. He was sent off after headbutting Marco Materazzi, an attack witnessed by the crowd of 69,000 and some 1.5 billion viewers in over 200 countries around the world. So the 2006 World Cup in Germany went to the team with the strongest defence and greater cunning rather than the combination of Zidane, Vieira, Thuram, Makelele and Barthez that had been mocked as old-timers in the runup to the tournament. Italy conceded only two goals during the tournament one an own goal, the other a penalty. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, defensive maestro and captain Fabio Cannavaro, the ubiquitous Andrea Pirlo and fearless defensive midfielder Gennaro Gattuso had kept everyone in check. Then there were the versatile wing backs, Gianluca Zambrotta and Fabio Grosso, suddenly switching into attack, while the formation was spearheaded by Luca Toni in the centre forward role. Decisive: Argentina s Maxi Rodriguez (out of picture) scores a dream goal to beat Mexico in extra time. Though the soaring temperatures may have played a certain role, the fact is that most teams adopted a rather cautious approach when the competition reached the knockout stage. This does not mean the matches were low on footballing content, but simply that any technical finesse was displayed primarily between the two penalty areas, with many coaches instructing their teams to play a cagey game. Yet a risky style of play can pay off, as two examples demonstrate. In extra time of the round-of-16 clash with Mexico, for example, Argentina went in search of a winner and to the relief of his team-mates, Maxi Rodriguez conjured up a fantastic volleyed goal. And when penalties loomed ever larger in the semi-final between Germany and Italy, azzurri coach Marcello Lippi responded by introducing an additional striker in support of his front trio of Vicenzo Iaquinta, Alberto Gilardino 6 7

Celebrity fans: German Chancellor Angela Merkel and FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. I think that people from abroad will remember us as a country that can really celebrate. People in Germany will know that we can also get behind our own country. Blatter on.... a mark out of 10 for the 2006 FIFA World Cup : I would give the organisation and ambiance 9, the standard of football 8. I would have liked to have seen more attacking football in the knockout stages of the competition. the success of the fan fests: The fan fests ensured that even if fans didn t have tickets they could still be part of the World Cup. The images we have seen of the fan miles have been wonderful. penalty shoot-outs: Football can be a drama, but also a tragedy, particularly when a match has to be decided by penalties. When it comes to this decisive showdown, football is no longer a team sport, instead it is reduced to a duel between goalkeeper and penalty-taker. and Francesco Totti. Lippi may have been moved to do so by the knowledge that Germany have never lost a penalty shoot-out at the World Cup. Italy were rewarded for their courage, taking the lead in the dying minutes of extra time. Substitute striker Alessandro del Piero then added a second to seal the win. THE FANS For the fans, the 2006 World Cup will go down in football history as an unrivalled event. Millions gathered on the fan miles for a giant party, and not only when Germany were playing. People from all over the world treated the tournament and the fans themselves as a celebration of football, in an atmosphere that was almost always good-humoured and peaceful. Wonderful images FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter shares his views on the tournament in Germany. Franz Beckenbauer: He was everywhere, he really revelled in his World Cup. I had different duties to perform. I managed to meet the delegations from every association apart from Sweden to hold discussions with officials. the controversy surrounding the Togo team: It was very sad that a team appearing in the World Cup for the first time produced so many negative headlines. In the end, we were forced to intervene in the bonus dispute between the association and the players. the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa: We will have to adapt to the surroundings, but we definitely want to retain the fan festivals. It s very important that we bring people together in South Africa. An in-depth interview with Joseph S. Blatter about the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany will be published in the September issue of FIFA magazine. Public viewing may seem a cumbersome and technical term to some football romantics, yet the communal experience in front of the big screen proved an outstanding success. All of a sudden, a stadium atmosphere was transported into the middle of German cities. The culinary variety on offer was exactly right for an event that unites so many. On the fan mile in Berlin, for Angela Merkel, German Chancellor example, more than a million people watched the quarter-final between Germany and Argentina. In the host nation alone, the television audience for the Germany v. Italy semifinal touched 30 million, an incredible figure that does not take into account the millions in front of the giant screens. And then there were the images from inside the magnificent stadiums. Despite all the prophecies of doom, the World Cup was an event for genuine supporters, proof that the ticketing system fulfilled its purpose regardless of all the criticism. The colourful images from the stands will remain etched in the memory of many of those who were inside the stadiums. THE GOALKEEPERS Obviously the goalkeepers will remain in the memory primarily for their exploits in the penalty shoot-outs. Take Germany s Jens Lehmann, for example, who against Argentina stayed so calm in front of 70,000 spectators and went on to save two spot kicks. Or Ukraine s Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, who also blocked two penalties in a roundof-16 shoot-out with Switzerland, thus ensuring his team s progress to the next stage. And Ricardo of Portugal, who proved England s ultimate nemesis. In a repeat of EURO 2004, his saves in Gelsenkirchen condemned England to another early flight home. In the face of all these successful interventions, it is easy to forget that the Party mood at Berlin s iconic Bradenburg Gate. I have never seen such a party atmosphere at a World Cup. I think that this was the people s World Cup. Jorge Valdano, World Cup winner with Argentina in

Spot-kick specialist: Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo saves an England penalty. In terms of ability, there was very little to choose between the teams in this World Cup. Asian teams are slowly closing the gap, even though they sometimes lack that little bit of class. Cha Bum-kun, former Korea Republic international THE EUROPEANS Football is a game that you can win or lose, but I get the impression that nobody can afford to lose anymore. Michel Platini, FIFA Executive Committee member and former France captain The experts got it wrong. Going into the tournament, most were convinced that Brazil would claim their sixth world title. The only other possible candidates were Argentina. They all agreed, however, that the world would see some excellent football, dazzling tricks, many spectacular goals and several new stars. That s what they thought! Rarely in World Cup history have so few goals been scored. Most of the games were dominated by the tacticians rather than the technicians. The best ratings were garnered not by attacking midfielders THE GERMANS German fans manifest their gratitude for a memorable World Cup with a banner. goalkeepers performed very well away from the shoot-outs, too. Switzerland s Pascal Zuberbuhler did not concede a single goal in four matches. The superb Gianluigi Buffon looked virtually unbeatable. Shaka Hislop travelled to Germany as Trinidad and Tobago s number two stopper and delighted the crowd with his showing in the scoreless draw with Sweden. Angola s Joao Ricardo caught the eye of the pundits with his assured displays. And Sweden s Andreas Isaksson (against Germany) and the Czech Republic s Petr Cech (against Ghana) saved their sides from heavier defeats with two brilliant performances. 26 February 2006: in the lounge of a Frankfurt hotel, Jurgen Klinsmann presents his plan for the forthcoming World Cup on home soil. The Germany boss communicates his unconventional ideas with conviction. He is a pleasant, relaxed person to talk to. We re out to reach the final, he says casually, as if he were announcing a visit to the hairdresser s. I want to enjoy the World Cup, to experience it, he adds. Three days later the calm is over. Germany crash 4-1 to Italy in a Florence friendly and Klinsmann faces a storm of opposition. Suddenly, everything he has done is wrong. It is unacceptable for him to live in California, it is said. His American fitness coaches are mocked, the involvement of sports psychologists harshly criticised. Klinsmann is portrayed as an esoteric maverick. Fast forward to 4 July 2006: Italy have just knocked out Klinsmann s side in the semi-finals of the World Cup. In spite of the disappointment, tens of thousands chant his name. The following day, the press are full of praise for the 42-yearold s work. The turnaround in public perception had set in three-and-a-half weeks earlier after the opening game against Costa Rica (4-2). Klinsmann s attacking brand of football quickly won the fans over. It was now fashionable to support the German national team. And the architect of it all, Klinsmann, so recently derided, was now being held as a shining example by the media. Even the serious dailies featured articles along the lines of What the business world can learn from Klinsmann. In the face of success, the retired world-class striker acquitted himself with discretion. He would have had enough arguments at his disposal to attack his critics, but he refrained from any form of populism, demonstrating magnanimity even when at the peak of his popularity. The second person to lend Germany a likeable face during the four weeks of the tournament was LOC president Franz Beckenbauer. The legendary Kaiser went to as many games as his helicopter would allow and attended every official reception, proving a superb host with a presence bordering on the mystical. A time to make friends was the slogan of the 2006 World Cup and the Germans lived it. Be it the friendly policeman in Hanover or the obliging steward in Munich, everyone played their part in offering the world an impeccably organised spectacle in a friendly atmosphere. All-European affair: action from the group match between Ukraine (in yellow) and Spain

and strikers, but by defenders and goalkeepers. And above all it was not the World Cup of the South Americans, or of the Asians and Africans. Brazil and Argentina went out in the quarter-finals. World Cup debutants Ghana were the only one of the five African representatives to make the round of 16, while all four Asian teams went home at the end of the group phase. Europe was the measure of all things. As the tournament reached the semifinal stage, only Portugal, France, Italy and host nation Germany were left in the running. For the first time since the 1982 World Cup in Spain, when Italy beat West Germany 3-1 in the final in Madrid and Poland overcame France 3-2 to claim third place, the last four were made up solely of European teams. Portugal (left) and France line up for the national anthems. THE REFEREES 6 July 2006, CET: at the World Cup referees headquarters in Frankfurt/ Neu-Isenburg, Horacio Elizondo buries his face in his hands and starts to sob. They are tears of joy. Belaid Lacarne, Algerian member of the FIFA Referees Committee, has just informed the Argentine referee that he will officiate at the Berlin final between Italy and France three days later. Elizondo cannot believe his luck and hugs his two assistants, Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero. I m so happy and so proud, he stammers. The officials in attendance burst into applause and rush to congratulate the trio on their appointment. The 42-year-old Elizondo is a physical education teacher who likes writing poetry and stories in his spare time. Normally, the keen golfer and tennis player does not refer to football in his poetry, though he might make an exception this time. He is even thinking of writing a book on the World Cup in Germany. There will be plenty of material. Elizondo is the first referee in World Cup history to take charge of both the opening game and the final. Along with Mexican Benito Archundia, he handled five matches in Germany a FIFA record. Unprecedented: Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo officiated the opening match and the final. AUGUST

THE COACHES On 9 July, the day of the final, eleven of the 32 teams who contested the 2006 World Cup no longer had the coach they had started the tournament with. And it is to be assumed that several of the team bosses who were in action in Germany will soon resign or be forced to quit. Brazil s Marcos Paqueta, for example, is unlikely to stay in charge of Saudi Arabia for long. His team were eliminated at the group stage and the Saudi FA have already consumed eleven coaches in the past 15 years. Also uncertain were the futures of Marcello Lippi (Italy), Bruce Arena (USA), Anibal Ruiz (Paraguay), Zlatko Kranjcar (Croatia), Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal) and Carlos Alberto Parreira (Brazil). Soon, more than half of the national coaches who travelled to the 2006 World Cup may have accepted a new appointment or be out of a job. Nowhere else in football is the fate of a coach so closely linked to victory or defeat than at the World Cup finals. Alexandre Guimaraes discovered just how much anger and frustration World Cup defeats can generate. After his Costa Rican side had gone out at the group stage, he and his family received a number of death threats. I m scared, said Guimaraes, who had been heaped with praise in South Korea and Japan four years previously, and he promptly resigned. Though Anibal Ruiz is officially still in charge of Paraguay, he has returned home to Uruguay. That s just as well, said a member of the Paraguayan football association. Following the miserable performances by our team in Germany, the fans are so angry we cannot guarantee his safety in Paraguay.
