1 EDITORIAL Joseph S. Blatter FIFA President Nearly 500 million people worldwide tuned in to watch television coverage of the Final Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Leipzig, while 3,500 guests and media representatives were in the arena to witness a stunning show like no other before it. It was an event of unparalleled magnitude, and our German hosts, once again, surpassed themselves. They deserve all the praise that comes their way. It goes without saying that the tension was at its most acute in the 32 finalist countries. In the build-up to the draw, speculation and hopes abounded, but now the die has been cast and the balls have been drawn. The teams know whom they will be facing in their first three matches, and coaches and players now have five months to prepare for the main event in Germany. Lady Luck, chance and eight former international footballers all had their say in making sure that we will not be short of exciting and attractive matches. The duel between Argentina and the Netherlands will revive memories of their dramatic quarterfinal encounter in Marseilles in 1998, whereas France and Switzerland will meet again after already crossing swords twice in the World Cup preliminary competition. In Angola v. Portugal and England v. Trinidad & Tobago, we will also see two matches between teams representing countries with strong historical links. Spain v. Tunisia will be, for all intents and purposes, a Mediterranean derby. Finally, we will also have an intriguing game between Sven-Goran Eriksson s England team and his home country, Sweden. Just like all the other World Cups before it, Germany 2006 will be a stage for the world s best players. At the FIFA World Player Gala on 19 December, one leading player retained his FIFA World Player award with an unprecedented margin of votes collected from coaches and captains of national teams all around the world. There can be no doubt that Brazil s Ronaldinho is currently the best bar none. England s Frank Lampard, who finished second in the voting, will also be at the centre of attention. For the player in third place, however, Germany 2006 will remain a dream, as Samuel Eto o s Cameroon narrowly missed out on a place in the World Cup. In the women s game, Birgit Prinz continues to set the pace, having completed a hat trick of Women s World Player titles. Brazil s Marta once again had to be content Excitement with a place among the top three, and the future is also bright for the USA s Shannon Boxx. The stage will be set for her in 2007, when the fifth FIFA Women s World Cup gets underway in China PR. But for now, it is the men s flagship event that is generating so much excitement. Wherever I go, people come up to me and start talking about the party that is just around the corner. It was no different in Leipzig with the finalist teams delegations and everyone else who was there. The sense of anticipation and joy is so intense that in Cote d Ivoire, a country ravaged by civil war, there will be an armistice during the World Cup, and let us hope, far beyond. Could we wish for anything better than a spectacular festival of football played in the spirit of peace and fair play? FEBRUARY

5 Hello, I m adidas+teamgeist! Leipzig whets appetite for more The Final Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany in Leipzig on 9 December was a memorable occasion that raised the level of excitement and anticipation ahead of the tournament in June and July still further. BY ANDREAS WERZ Impressive performances on a huge, modern stage from Markus Siegler (top), Heidi Klum and Franz Beckenbauer, among others. PHOTOS: FOTO-NET/KURT SCHORRER/MARKUS ULMER In Latin America and large parts of Europe, the Colombian musician Juanes is what you would commonly call a star, or even a superstar. Last year, he had a world hit with the song La camisa negra (the black shirt), which blared from radios and had people spontaneously swinging their hips everywhere, including Asia and Africa. The Local Organising Committee for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany and FIFA were therefore proud to see Juanes perform the sole musical contribution during the 100-minute television broadcast of the Final Draw for the World Cup in Leipzig on 9 December. Juanes himself was a little incredulous, however, saying: There are so many famous people here, such as Angela Merkel, Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Joseph S. Blatter and Heidi Klum. So why was I invited? I m To be honest, I m still recovering from 9 December 2005, the day that my makers, adidas, presented me to the world during the World Cup Final Draw. 500 million people saw me on television in over 150 countries all around the globe, not to mention the crowd of around 3,500 people in the Leipzig exhibition centre! All eyes were on me and my leather; everyone wanted to touch, kick or bounce me from Heidi Klum to Johan Cruyff, from Pele to Joseph S. Blatter and Franz Beckenbauer. It was a touch stressful! But of course, I am delighted that football experts and fans alike have fallen in love with me, not only because of my modern design in the classic colours of black and white (oh, and a hint of gold), but also because of how I play and how I feel. Real Madrid s players even tested me during a training session before my debut in Leipzig, and David Beckham was kind enough to say that he, and his teammates, thought I was brilliant! Those words are very kind but I could not have done it without the help of the 10 or 20 people who have been working on me over the last three years, including two of the world s top goalkeepers, Oliver Kahn and Edwin van der Saar. I am proud to be the official matchball for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, and I hope that I can bring joy to as many players and fans as possible during the tournament. If you treat me right, I promise to be good and to land in the net as often as possible! It won t be my fault if I fly wide of the goal or even over the crossbar. After all, Zinedine Zidane has already assured me that if you kick me properly, I fly in the right direction! That is thanks to adidas, the company that has been making footballs since 1963 and an Official FIFA Partner since My ancestors, as you know, were called Telstar (1970, 1974), Tango (1978, 1982), Azteca (1986), Etrusco Unico (1990), Questra (1994), Tricolore (1998) and Fevernova (2002). I am the product of revolutionary technology and I am a ball made up of 14 panels. I have a smooth and completely spherical outer surface, which means that the players will have so much more accuracy and ball control with me. The nice people at adidas have told me that I am very, very important to them, and that I will be the most common worldwide symbol of the World Cup in Germany. High praise indeed from Markus Baumann, adidas football manager, from adidas CEO Herbert Hainer ( The best ball in recent decades ) and Brazil star Kaka ( adidas+teamgeist is the perfect blend of the future and the past ). adidas also say that, because I am so beautiful and so good, they expect to sell ten million of me in 2006! You can buy my sister as a miniature ball and my brother as a ball for children and for kickabouts. So kick me no, actually, caress me with your feet, and you will see how unique and how good I am! Yours, adidas+teamgeist 10 FEBRUARY 2006 FEBRUARY

6 FIFA magazine: Did you enjoy the Final Draw in Leipzig on 9 December? Ottmar Hitzfeld: I did, I thought it was excellent! We all got a taste of what we can expect in Germany in June and July a wonderful festival of football, a fantastic atmosphere, a tournament to bring people together, excellent organisation and, let s hope, a peaceful celebration. You can almost feel the tension and the excitement rising day by day. So what are you expecting of this year s World Cup? Hitzfeld: A continuation of the tendency for teams to rely on assured build-up play. Football has changed over the last five years; the best teams have improved in terms of their running and retaining possession. Any team that masters the art of letting the ball do the work will stand a good chance in Germany. I also think that compared to 2002, we can expect more goals in Most of the 32 teams use a four-man defence and are always looking to attack. I also expect the 2006 World Cup to be very well organised. After all, Germany are already world champions in that field! Security will also be a key issue that is, unfortunately, the way it has to be in the current climate. Do you also make Brazil favourites to win the World Cup? Ottmar Hitzfeld: That s fantastic! World-famous coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on the World Cup Final Draw, the upcoming World Cup finals in Germany and on what the future holds for him. Hitzfeld: Without a doubt. The Selecao are on a different level to all the other teams. I d put Germany, England, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Argentina on more or less the same level. Many Germans are already celebrating as the hosts have been placed in what they believe to be an easy group alongside Ecuador, Poland and Costa Rica Hitzfeld: Those teams still have to be beaten though! The pressure on the German team has not eased since the draw quite the opposite, in fact. The German public is now demanding nothing less than three wins from their team anything less, and there ll be uproar. What are you expecting of the African teams? Hitzfeld: Not a great deal to be honest. Just getting to the round of 16 would be an achievement. A good team needs five or six star players, but the African teams each have one or maybe two top-class players in their ranks. Ghana, for example, have Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah, Tunisia have Francileudo Dos Santos, Togo have Emmanuel Adebayor and Cote d Ivoire have Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure. You need more than that if you want to get far in the World Cup. And what about the Asian teams? Hitzfeld: They won t be as impressive as they were four years ago when they had home advantage, but I think Japan will get further than Korea Republic in this year s World Cup. Will we see the emergence of new stars? Hitzfeld: There will undoubtedly be some young players who prove to be a star or even a superstar. Look out for England s Wayne Rooney, Brazil s Robinho, Argentina s Lionel Messi and Switzerland s Tranquillo Barnetta, to name but a few. Which teams could cause an upset? Hitzfeld: There are a few Mexico, Paraguay, Portugal and Switzerland. Where will you be watching the 2006 World Cup? Hitzfeld: I ll be working as the main analyst for the German pay-perview channel, Premiere. I have been working as a TV journalist since leaving Bayern Munich in 2004 and I am really enjoying it as it gives me so much satisfaction. I do 60 programmes per year, concentrating on the German league, the UEFA Champions League and the 2006 World Cup. I travel a lot too, watching some wonderful matches. Do you not miss being a coach? Hitzfeld: I certainly don t miss the non-stop stress and pressure to succeed that comes with being a coach, but yes, I do miss the dayto-day work with young players. I have had quite a few offers from club and national teams in the last few months, but I have turned them all down. I nearly moved to Qatar, but I changed my mind at the last minute. Do you really not want to get back into coaching? Hitzfeld: I simply don t know at the moment, I really don t. I ll decide in April or May. But I do know that it would take an offer that immediately made me think Yes, that s the one! because I am really enjoying my work at the moment. I have an excellent standard of living. I feel free, I have fewer burdens than before, and I can watch football through the eyes of a fan, and that s just fantastic! awe Ottmar Hitzfeld is one of Europe s most successful coaches. The 57- year-old German, who was once a lethal striker himself at clubs such as VfB Stuttgart, has won more than 20 major honours as a coach, including the UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern Munich in not a world star, after all. But it is, of course, a great honour for me to be at such a unique occasion. Juanes, a football fan and close friend of former Colombian international Mauricio Serna who played at the World Cup in 1994 and 1998, captivated the 3,500 invited guests in the auditorium and 500 million television viewers in over 150 countries with his rendition of La camisa negra. Further entertainment was provided by Dutch illusionist Hans Klok and a number of amusing film clips about football in Germany and the history of the World Cup matchballs. Hosted by German television presenter Reinhold Beckmann and model Heidi Klum, the event proved a huge success. The highlight, of course, was the draw that produced the eight groups. CELEBRITY ASSISTANTS Master of ceremonies at the draw was FIFA Director of Communications Markus Siegler. If the 32 teams at the World Cup finals perform with as much aplomb as the Swiss did in front of an imposing set on a 4,000 m 2 stage, we will surely witness an outstanding and unforgettable tournament. Siegler explained the draw procedure in succinct terms and adeptly guided the eight celebrity assistants Pele, Johan Cruyff, Roger Milla, Lothar Matthaus, Lucas Radebe, Christian Karembeu, Cobi Jones and Masashi Nakayama who pulled the teams out of the pots. Only two national coaches missed the most complex Final Draw ever to be staged by the world governing body (Argentina s Jose Pekerman was undergoing hand surgery, while Saudi Arabia s Gabriel Calderon was at a tournament in Qatar), and it certainly produced some intriguing groups. Whereas hosts Germany celebrated what some may feel was a slightly easier draw (Ecuador, Costa Rica and Poland), Italy coach Marcello Lippi let out a spontaneous Mamma mia! when his team were drawn against Ghana, the USA and the Czech Republic. The representatives of the four teams in C (Argentina, Serbia and Montenegro, Cote d Ivoire and the Netherlands) responded in similar Ball control: Roger Milla, Johan Cruyff, Pele and Lothar Matthaus (from left to right). 12 FEBRUARY 2006 FEBRUARY

7 fashion. Some pundits are already dubbing it, rather militaristically, the of Death. 14 EXCITEMENT MOUNT We can all look forward to some interesting group matches and a great tournament, said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and Franz Beckenbauer, President of the Local Organising Committee, in unison. Both men were commanding on stage, as were the Germans Horst Eckel (World Cup winner in 1954), Jurgen Klinsmann (World Cup winner in 1990 and incumbent national coach) and Michael Ballack (Germany captain), not forgetting adidas+teamgeist, the official matchball of the 2006 FIFA World Cup (see inset). Tickets and income 1.5 billion euros the estimated amount of money to be spent by visitors during their stay in Germany for the World Cup. It was also an evening that whetted the appetite even more if at all possible for the world s biggest single-sport event in Germany in June and July. The excitement is building, and with it, the sense of anticipation ahead of the 18 th FIFA World Cup. Cup. In 2002, adidas sold nearly six million balls. 15 the number of companies classified as Official Partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, at a cost to them of between USD 40 and 80 million (approximately EUR million) million Swiss francs the record prize money for the new world champions (approximately 16 million euros). The runners-up will receive 22.5 million Swiss francs, with the teams finishing third and fourth each claiming 21.5 million. FIFA s total prize fund will be 332 million Swiss francs and each of the 32 teams will receive at least 7 million Swiss francs in bonuses. 35 euros the price of the cheapest ticket for a match in the group stage. The most expensive ticket for the final will be 600 euros. 48% of German fans believe that Brazil will win the World Cup again in % believe that the Germans will triumph, with 4.8% looking no further than Argentina. 250 million Swiss francs (approximately 162 million euros) the amount of money that the Local Organising Committee will receive from FIFA for hosting the 2006 World Cup. Blatter and partner Ilona Boguska. 260 euros per person per day the amount that FIFA will pay during the stay of each team s 45-person delegation, on top of travel in business class. 500 million in 160 countries the number of people estimated by experts to have watched the World Cup Final Draw in Leipzig. 450 million euros the Local Organising Committee s budget for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. 15,000 the number of volunteers, from all around the world, who will be working during the World Cup. 30,000 the total number of telephone lines installed in the 12 stadiums. 41,100 the number of hours of programmes produced by HBS (Host Broadcasting Services) during the 2002 World Cup. An accumulated total of around 30 billion people watched the event in Korea and Japan on television. This figure is expected to rise for the 2006 event. 47,000 the average number of fans that FIFA expects to attend the matches in the 12 German host cities. 100,000 the number of additional, partly short-term jobs that will be created in Germany as part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
