Dear media representative, Welcome to a new season in the VELUX EHF Champions League and to the competition s official Media Guide. We are looking forward to a special year in Europe s premier club handball competition as we enter the 20 th season of EHF Champions League handball. We have come a long way in this time and I am certain that few people back at the start of the 1993/94 season could have imagined just how popular and successful the competition would become with its global TV audience and final mega event the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. The new season also brings with it a new logo and a new look for the VELUX EHF Champions League. Launched to the media in May 2012 in Cologne, the new logo is dynamic and exciting, reflecting all the positive aspects of our sport and the competition. The new look also gives us the opportunity to present the brand with more flexibility and creativity we hope you like it. We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have. We look forward to working with you in the coming season! 4 NEW MEDIA SERVICE: TEAM LINE-UPS AND MATCH REPORTS With the start of the 2012/13 season, comes an improvement to the media services offered by the EHF. From the opening matches of the season, the complete team line-up has been available online at eurohandball.com and available to download as a PDF document. The change has been made possible thanks to the introduction of a new online solution, which sees the EHF match delegate complete the final team line-up immediately after the technical meeting. The new development means that team line-ups are available for commentators and reporters hours before each match throws-off. A further change means that a short time after each match, a completed match report will also be available online with details such as goal scorers and number of spectators. Tested during the opening rounds of the EHF Cup as well as the VELUX EHF Champions League and Women s EHF Champions League qualification rounds, the new system has so far functioned without any major problems. Team line-ups and match reports can be viewed by clicking on a particular match on the eurohandball.com or ehfcl.com websites. The new online system is also under further development with the ultimate aim being to provide live scores and statistics from EHF competitions and available on the EHF website. 7 NEW LOGO: NEW LOOK FOR A NEW SEASON The new logo and look for the VELUX EHF Champions League and the WOMEN S EHF Champions League was launched on Saturday 26 May 2012 at a special VIP event at the VELUX EHF FINAL Officially in use from 1 July 2012, the new logo was created by Danish creative agency, e-types, who were given the brief to create a new and fresh image for Europe s premium club handball competitions, the VELUX EHF Champions League and WOMEN S EHF Champions League, whilst capturing the elements of prestige, sporting dynamic and passion that go with the competition. Inspired by the dynamic nature of the game and the movement of the ball and players, the new logo is a departure from the competition s logo that has been in place for many years, but retains some of the key elements such as the blue of the Champions League but in new and vibrant gradients. Additional colour elements in the star-shaped logo include gold, symbolising the ultimate goal of every player and team as well as the red of the title sponsor of the competition, the VELUX Group. New EHF logo The new corporate identity allows for much more creativity in the future, with key elements from the logo to be used in advertising and promotion of the VELUX EHF Champions League and VELUX EHF FINAL4 as well as online and in TV graphics. The VELUX EHF Champions League and Women's EHF Champions League logos are the first in a series of developments, which will also see a refresh and modernisation of the European Handball Federation s corporate identity. At the core of the new EHF Champions League is a new EHF logo, which was officially launched at the EHF Congress in Monte Carlo, Monaco on 22 and 23 June The new logo has been in use since the 1 July In the future the distinctive EHF logo will serve as an anchor in the logos of EHF Watch the video presentation 7

20 th anniversary season of the VELUX EHF Champions League before the start 24 teams from 15 nations spectacular transfers playing system unchanged PREVIEW: 148 MATCHES UNTIL WINNER LIFTS TROPHY The 20 th season of the VELUX EHF Champions League starts its engines. 24 teams from 15 nations have 120 matches in ten rounds of the Group Phase ahead, followed by the knock-out matches and the climax, the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in June 2013 in Cologne. The 27 September 2012 marks the starting point for the anniversary season in Europe s most prestigious club handball competition, with the throw-off of the first four group matches. The lead-up was a summer full of surprises positive and negative and of spectacular transfers. The bad news was the end of the AG København project, the 2011/12 VELUX EHF FINAL4 participant went bankrupt and all players had to find new clubs. Danish runners-up Bjerringbro- Silkeborg took København s place in the Group Phase. The handball transfer market in Spain was extremely busy and a large number of Asobal players had find new clubs abroad. After long and intense negotiations László Nagy left FC Barcelona, where he played for 12 years, and returned to his home country Hungary, now being the star player at MKB Veszprém. The Hungarian champions also signed Spanish coach Antonio Carlos Ortega. The highest ranked transfer coming to Spain was the return of Ivano Balić. He switched allegiances from Zagreb to Atlético Madrid after he had played for Portland San Antonio until On the other hand Madrid lost some important players like Luc Abalo, Didier Dinart, both transferred to Paris, or Arpad Sterbik who now plays for FC Barcelona. Some well-known faces of the VELUX EHF Champions League like Abalo, Dinart, World Handball Player of the Year and last season s top scorer of the VELUX EHF Champions League Mikkel Hansen (former club København, now Paris) will be absent from the competition. Their heavily bolstered clubs were not eligible to join the elite competition yet. The same applies to Marko Kopljar (former club Zagreb, now Paris) or last season s VELUX EHF FINAL4 winner Kim Andersson (from Kiel to KIF Kolding). However, their targets have been already set and they can be expected as top contenders of the VELUX EHF Champions League 2013/14. But several AG København players found new clubs participating in the VELUX EHF Champions League like the trio Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, Niclas Ekberg and ReneToft Hansen now playing for defending champions THW Kiel, Arnor Atlason (Flensburg) or Henrik Toft Hansen (Bjerrinbro-Silkeborg). Kiel will be the hunted not the hunter this season and the three-time winner of the VELUX EHF Champions League hope to break the curse that since the launch of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2010 no defending champion was able to qualify for the final weekend in Cologne again. All coaches of the 24 participating teams participating in the Group Phase have Kiel on their list of favourites followed by last season s finalist Madrid or record-champion Barcelona. But not only Spanish or German teams are among the favourites but also Veszprém, Vive Targi Kielce (thanks to their shopping spree at Rhein Neckar Löwen) or Montpellier MAHB rank among the team with hopes for the title. 9

In contrast to the previous season, no debutant is among the 24 teams. At least every team plays its second season in the VELUX EHF Champions League. But no club has been part of the competition in all 20 season including the current one. The record holders in this ranking are RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb (CRO) with 19 participations in 20 years. The runners-up with 18 participations each are Veszprém (HUN) and RK Celje (SLO), which return after a one year absence. The two previous VELUX EHF Champions League winners Barcelona and Kiel go into their respective 16th season, followed by Montpellier (15). Russian champions Chekhovskie Medvedi hold another record, as they are the only team which joins in the top club competition for the 13th straight time. Germany is the only country with four participants in the VELUX EHF Champions League, followed by Spain (3) and France, Hungary, Russia and Slovenia with two participants each. The field of teams overall is stronger than ever when looking at the winners of 19 seasons of EHF Champions League. All Champions League winners since 2003 are among those 24 teams in the Group Phase: Montpellier, Celje (one title each since 2003), Barcelona (two titles), Madrid (former name Ciudad Real) and Kiel (three titles each). Taking in consideration that former winners like Portland, Irun and Santander have disappeared from the handball map, then German club Magdeburg (2002 winner as the first non-spanish team) are the only still existing team of former Champions League winners not being part of the heavy-weight class although they qualified for the new EHF Cup. Barcelona still hold the record with seven trophies since the start of the competition in 1993, including five straight titles from 1996 to Runners-up are Madrid and Kiel with three victories each. Only four nations are home of EHF Champions League winners: Spain with 13 titles, Germany (4), Slovenia and France (one each). As 19 places of the 24 teams of the Group Phase had been allocated based on the EHF seeding list, five spots were given to the winners of the qualification tournaments and play-offs. Metalurg Skopje (MKD), Partizan Beograd (SRB), HCM Constanta (ROU), HSV Hamburg (GER) and Dinamo Minsk (BLR) made their way to the Group Phase. The playing system remains the same as in the years since the installation of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in the 2009/10 season. After 120 matches in the Group Phase until 24 February 2013, the four top ranked teams of each of the four groups proceed to the Last 16 (played 13 to 24 March 2013). The top ranked teams will face the fourth ranked and the second ranked the third ranked. The winners of those fixtures make their way to the quarter-finals (17 to 28 April 2013), with the regulation that no group winner will face another group winner. Those four teams winning the quarter-finals have reached the final destination, the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne, played on 1 and 2 June 2013 in the LANXESS Arena. After in total 166 matches (including the qualification) the winner of the 20 th anniversary season of the VELUX EHF Champions League will lift the trophy. 10

GROUPS: VELUX EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2012/13 Group A 1. Montpellier Agglomération Handball 2. Chekhovskie Medvedi 3. SG Flensburg-Handewitt 4. Reale Ademar Leon 5. RK Partizan 6. HSV Hamburg Group B 1. THW Kiel 2. MKB Veszprém KC 3. BM Atlético Madrid 4. IK Sävehof 5. Celje Pivovarna Laško 6. HCM Constanta Group C 1. Bjerringbro-Silkeborg (replaced AG København) 2. Gorenje Velenje 3. KS Vive Targi Kielce 4. Chambéry Savoie Handball 5. St. Petersburg HC 6. HC Metalurg Skopje Group D 1. FC Barcelona Intersport 2. HC Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb 3. Kadetten Schaffhausen 4. Füchse Berlin 5. Pick Szeged 6. HC Dinamo Minsk AN EXPERT S VIEW: FRANCOIS-XAVIER HOULET The 43-year-old has more than 20 years of handball experience under his belt. He played for ten seasons each in France (mainly at Créteil and Montpellier) and Germany (mainly at VfL Gummersbach) as well as eighty times for the French national team, winning several national and international titles. Following his active handball career, he was VfL Gummersbach s general secretary from 2008 until 2010 and now works as a players consultant and TV-expert for bein Sport. Finally the throw-off for the new season is approaching! The top European teams will vie for the Champions League and once again the cast of participating teams is excellent only reigning Danish champion and FINAL4 participant AG København will be missed. So which team can succeed THW Kiel? First of all, I think, it is the THW themselves, followed by FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Montpellier and Veszprém might become formidable contenders. And never forget those teams that are sometimes truly, sometimes wrongly regarded as outsiders. Whether it is German trio Flensburg, Berlin and Hamburg, Polish champion Kielce or Russian powerhouse Chekhov, they are all forces to reckon with. So the 20th edition of the Champions League promises many thrilling encounters. And one thing is for sure: The crème de la crème of clubs will be present on the June 1 and 2 next year in Cologne. 11

HISTORY: TWENTY YEARS OF EHF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 1993/94 Final: ABC Braga vs TEKA Santander 22:22/21:23 (43:45) The inaugural year of the Men s EHF Champions League saw the classic home and away knockout matches being replaced with a totally new system. 32 teams went into two qualification rounds, eliminating 24 clubs. The remaining eight teams were placed into two groups of four teams each playing in a round-robin system. TEKA Santander and ABC Braga topped their respective groups and faced each other in the final. Santander narrowly kept the upper hand and started what should become an eight-year Spanish club winning streak in the Men s EHF Champions League. 1994/95 Final: Elgorriaga Bidasoa Irun vs Badel Zagreb 30:20 / 26:27 (56:47) The final of the EHF Champions League s second season became the match of a lifetime for Irun s Nenad Perunicic, nicknamed the canon or Il Conquistadore by the fans. He was his team s key player in the final and, in his first year in Spain, not only the lifted the EHF Champions League but also the national championship trophy with Irun. 1995/96 Final: FC Barcelona vs Elgorriaga Bidasoa Irun 23:15 / 23:23 (46:38) In the season that was marked by the Bosman decision, which had substantial effects on transfer regulations and transfer fees in sport, FC Barcelona won their first EHF Champions League title. No other should be capable of dethroning the Catalan side for the next four years. 1996/97 Final: FC Barcelona vs Badel Zagreb 31:22 / 30:23 (61:45) In their second consecutive EHF Champions League Final Barcelona dominated both matches against Badel Zagreb. And while the Spanish side celebrated their second EHF Champions League triumph, the Croatian side had lost their second final. Also in 1996/97 the so called fast break was born due to a rule change, making handball more attractive and athletic than ever before. 34

1997/98 Final: FC Barcelona vs Badel Zagreb 28:18 / 28:22 (56:40) Barcelona beat Zagreb once more to win their third consecutive EHF Champions League title. But at least as much news as the repeated triumph made the wedding of Barcelona player Inaki Urdangarin who married Christina, youngest daughter of Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, on 4 th October /99 Final: Badel Zagreb vs FC Barcelona 22:22 / 18:29 (40:51) Once again there were tears in Zagreb and joy in Barcelona. The Spanish team beat Zagreb in their third consecutive final and lifted the EHF Champions League trophy for the fourth time in a row. Zagreb s coach Velimir Klajic had to admit that Barcelona at this moment in time, were quite simply the best club team in the world. 1999/00 Final: THW Kiel FC Barcelona 28:25 / 24:29 (52:54) THW Kiel became the first German team to make it into the Final but even a 28:25-victory in the final s first leg was not enough to end Barcelona s EHF Champions League winning streak. Backed by half of the Spanish national team and international stars like Christian Schwarzer and Tomas Svensson, Barcelona won their fifth title. 2000/01 Final: Portland San Antonio FC Barcelona 30:24 / 22:25 (52:49) For Barcelona it was a whole new feeling to watch another team celebrating at the end of the Champions League Final. Following five consecutive titles an era came to end when Spanish King Juan Carlos handed the huge tropy to Portland San Antonio at the end of all-spanish Final. 2001/02 Final: Fotex Veszprem vs SC Magdeburg 23:21 / 25:30 (48:51) One year after Barcelona s dominance had ended in the EHF Champions League, the dominance of Spanish clubs also came to an end, when SC Magdeburg became the first German team to win the competition. And late at night, at the end of a glittering party, Stefan Kretzschmar and coach Alfred Gislason were still up for jokes: Training is on the agenda. The entire team is going to run through the whole town until 08:00 tomorrow morning, they both proclaimed. 2002/03 Final: Portland San Antonio Montpellier HB 27:19 / 19:31 (46:50) A new star was born during the finals of the 2002/03 EHF Champions League season. Montpellier s Nikola Karabatic scored 11 goals in the first leg in Spain and another six in front of his home fans, enabling his team to turn around the eight goal defeat from the first leg and to become the first French side to win the EHF Champions League. 35

2003/04 Final: Celje vs Flensburg- Handewitt 34:28 / 28:30 (62:58) In an Executive Meeting in March 2003 the European Handball Federation had decided on a new structure for the EHF Champions League. Three teams from Spain and Germany now had a starting slot. Two representatives from Hungary, Slovenia, Denmark and Croatia would start in the Group Phase. Overall 32 teams (8 groups of 4 teams each) made up the Group Phase. Flensburg had profited from the new system but Slovenian side Celje was too strong in the final. 2004/05 Final: BM Ciudad Real vs FC Barcelona Cifec 28:27 / 27:29 (55:56) Following four years without being present in the final, Barcelona won their sixth EHF Champions League title. And while the spectator record for one match was 10,000 fans, the whole city celebrated Barcelona s victory. We did a lap of honour in the Stadion Nou Camp in front of 100,000 spectators and were celebrated by the whole town, remembers Barcelona s Dane Lars Krogh Jeppesen. 2005/06 Final: Portland San Antonio vs BM Ciudad Real 19:25 / 28:37 (47:62) Spanish businessman and BM Ciudad Real president, Domingo Diaz de Mera, had put together a team that proved to be unbeatable in the 2005/06 Champions League season. Mera bought superstars from all over Europe and the team around Olafur Stefansson, Mirza Dzomba, Didier Dinart et al. paid justified Mera s expenses when they beat Spanish rival San Antonio in the final. 2006/07 Final: SG Flensburg- Handewitt vs THW Kiel 28:28 / 27:29 (55:57) The EHF Champions League, through the efforts of the 2005 founded EHF Marketing GmbH, became a unified look. Since 2006, TV spectators across Europe know they are watching a men s EHF Champions League match when they see the distinct blue lagoon and black supplied by flooring specialists Gerfloor in addition to the season s individual yellow and blue handball supplied by adidas. On the sport side of things, Kiel won their first EHF Champions League title, beating arch rival Flensburg-Handewitt. 2007/08 Final: BM Ciudad Real vs THW Kiel 27:29 / 31:25 (58:54) In the 2007/08 season a second Group Phase with four groups of four teams each replaced the Last 16-matches and the quarter-finals. The first teams of each group qualified for the semi-finals and in the final 2006 champion Ciudad Real faced 2007 champion THW Kiel. The Spanish side prevailed and could win their second EHF Champions League trophy. 36

2008/09 Final: THW Kiel vs BM Ciudad Real 39:34 / 27:33 (66:67) THW Kiel and BM Ciudad Real faced each other in the final for the second year in a row and even though Kiel had won the first leg of the final by five goals, it was Ciudad Real that won the EHF Champions League for a second consecutive time. Kiel were still in the lead by 20:16 after 39 minutes but with a series of 10:3 goals within 11 minutes Ciudad Real turned the match in their favour. 2009/10 Final: FC Barcelona Borges vs HW Kiel 34:36 In the 2009/10 Champions League season the number of participating teams in the first Group Phase was reduced from 32 to 24. Four groups of six teams each were formed and the first four teams qualified for the knock-out phase which replaced the second group phase.
