2 Story Summary Tom of the Environmental services for the Parnell City Council needs a solution to monitor and control public bins, pavement litter and schedule sweepers. Storyline Currently the whole process is manual. Tom assigns jobs to the footpath sweepers who cleans the pavements from litter in the morning and keep checking during the day for any litter. The Sweepers also empties the public bins twice a day regardless of whether the bins are full or not. Like in the image below Tom wants to know if there is garbage around the bins, and then alert the sweeper on the ground. Tom gets a report from the sweepers at the end of the day if there are any issues. Tom is interested in a way to be efficiently alerted when the public bins are full and the pavement has litter. 6 CURRENT SITUATION Cleaning is done during the early hours of the morning and involves mechanically and manually sweeping the footpaths and streets, as well as collecting all the litter. A designated person with a hand-cart may also carry out spot-cleaning during the day. Frequencies and exact cleaning schedules are planned appropriate to an area's use. PROPOSED SOLUTION The proposed solution is an Iota solution whereby the bins alerts the manager on any changes e.g. damaged bins, full bins, not enough bins in the area, type of waste, smell, fire etc. The manager will be able to schedule jobs and point the stuff to the right bins that need urgent attention instead of sweeper constantly checking throughout the day even if the bins are not full. This solution can also manage the equipment inventory, alert of any issues on the equipment in advance. The solution can also be future enhance to monitor not just the bins but the pavements, with sensors placed on the pavement or on the street lights to detect any litter.
