2008 SCAC Season Preview SUWANEE, Ga. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference saw a handful of firsts for field hockey in Not only did the league expand to five participating institutions but Centre College received the first ever post-season bid into the NCAA Tournament in the four year history of SCAC field hockey. Centre coach Tom Hobbs, the 2007 SCAC Coach-of-the-Year, will look to build off a 2007 campaign that produced the most successful year in school history. The Colonels will see four fresh faces joining a solid group of returning starters in Danville, Kentucky. The returning starters are headlined by Teresa Johnstone. Johnstone, the leagues first-ever All-American in field hockey and Co-Offensive-Player-of-the-Year led the SCAC in points (26) and was tied second for goals (10). For the first time in school history DePauw will start the 2008 season as the defending SCAC Champions. Second year coach Gina Preston will lead a concrete core of seven returning starters including all conference selections from a year ago Kate Dobbins, Carolyn Muller and Becca Rojek. The Tigers, with a mixture of leadership and six incoming freshman, are poised to make a run at defending their title in 08. The Lynx of Rhodes will enter the 2008 season as the only two-time winner of the SCAC and will look to reach the national spotlight this year. Offensively Rhodes comes off the most productive season in SCAC history scoring 52 goals a year ago. However with the loss of Co- Offensive-Player-of-the-Year Erin Atman, Rhodes will need to find scoring in other places this season. SCAC Newcomer of the Year Charlie Wagner will anchor the midfield with three year starter Maria Cowley anchoring a defense that only allowed 24 goals and produced eight shutouts a year ago. In their second year of competition, Hendrix will open up its season with a new sense of excitement under head coach Ellie Karvoskie. Five incoming freshman will join with nine returning players including sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Havens. Havens shattered the conference record for saves in a season (175) averaging just over eleven per contest. With new faces and experienced gained from an inaugural season the Warriors will look to improve in After advancing to the championship game for the second time in the first four years of SCAC field hockey competition Sewanee is looking to take the next step and capture its first SCAC field hockey championship in school history. The Tigers are arguably the most seasoned team heading into 2008 with seven seniors and ten returning starters. Leading the squad will be two seniors, All-SCAC performer from a year ago midfielder Claiborne Buckingham and fellow classmate forward Lynn Hancock. Buckingham needs just seven assists this season to become the leagues all-time assists leader while Hancock finished last year second in the conference in goals (10) and atop the conference averaging 0.62 goals per contest.

2008 Preview Centre College Colonels Coming off the best season in school history with a record of 13-5 and the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance, the Centre College Colonels will be challenged to repeat that success in With a strong returning roster and four freshmen, Centre stacks up as one of the most talented teams in the league. All- American Teresa Johnstone will be rejoined by senior Beth Faulkner, who missed last season due to injury, to lead the Colonels' attack. Fellow seniors Emily Boyle, Alison Pierce, and Sarah Scheer will play pivotal roles in the midfield and backfield as well keep the Colonels focused with their leadership throughout the year. Juniors Mary Kate Clodius, Sally Faulkner, Victoria Richardson, and Rachel Watkins will seek to make even bigger impacts this year as they accounted for over 40% of the Colonels goals last season. Sophomores Brittany Coppola, Sarah Humphries, and Cynthia Morse gained a lot of confidence during their freshman campaigns and will be relied upon to take larger roles across the pitch this season. Humphries was a rock in the backfield in 2007 while Morse played quality minutes all season in the forward and midfield lines. Coppola earned minutes throughout last season and hopes to gain more in The Colonels welcome four freshmen to the program from outstanding high school programs. Patty Cowley (Sacred Heart Academy Louisville, Ky.) will continue Centre's long line of outstanding goal keepers as she takes over from 2007 SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year Ann Guagliardo who graduated. Cowley will be joined in the backfield by high school teammate Jennifer Bohnert (Sacred Heart Academy Louisville, Ky.) and Leah Oberst (Assumption High School Louisville, Ky.). Bohnert and Oberst will make immediate impacts on the field with their intelligent defensive play and individual skill. Katy Meyer (Assumption High School Louisville, Ky.) joins the Colonels after a year away from the game. She will play in the forward and midfield lines and is expected to give the Colonels a lot of energy throughout the season. The Colonels schedule features numerous out-of-conference fixtures and an always difficult SCAC schedule, which culminates with their hosting the 5 th Annual SCAC Championships on November 7-9, The Colonels won the SCAC Championship in 2005.

2008 Preview DePauw University Tigers Led by the return of seven starters including a solid senior class, the defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Tigers hope to carry the momentum of last season into the 2008 campaign. Second-year head coach Gina Preston, who led the Tigers to a 12-8 record last year including wins over Centre and Sewanee at the SCAC Championship, feels the experienced seniors will provide strong leadership and will guide the six freshmen entering the program this season. Those freshmen will likely be early contributors early as just nine players return from last year s team. Returning to the front are seniors Beth Ellis, Carolyn Mueller and Beth Seegers as well as junior Sarah Riffle. Mueller, an all-region and all-scac performer a year ago, is the top returning goal scorer with seven goals and six assists a year ago. Seegers also scored seven goals and added four assists, while Ellis and Riffle scored five each. Ellis is a two-time all-scac honoree. Kate Dobbins, an all-scac performer last year, is the lone returner to the midfielder and Preston has expectations that she can control the game from the center mid position. The heart of a strong defense returns as well as sophomore Liz Attewell is back in goal along with back Becca Rojek. Attewell started all 20 games and played every possible minute in goal in her rookie season and recorded three shutouts.

2008 Preview Hendrix College Warriors The Hendrix College field hockey team will open its second season with a new level of experience and excitement under second-year head coach Ellie Karvoskie. The Warriors will feature nine returners and five newcomers during the 2008 season. The experiences we faced during our inaugural season have made our team stronger, said Karvoskie. I expect the combination of newcomers and returners will give us balance in aggression and finesse on the field. Hendrix s players to watch in 2008 include sophomores Alyssa Havens, Abby Coleman, Heather Newell and Taylor LaFortune. Havens earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Month honors in She led the conference in saves (175), saves per game (11.67) and posted a.726 save percentage. Havens knowledge of the game allows Hendrix to remain competitive in every contest. Karvoskie will look to Coleman as an offensive leader. Coleman has exceptional one-on-one elimination skills that can penetrate any defense. Newell and LaFortune will head the Warriors defensive attack. Newell will play the explosive and tenacious roll in the backfield, while LaFortune s poised defense and steadfast stick skills will disrupt any offender. The incoming class is full of impact players in the midfield and forward positions. The first years have already shown that they are game winners and finishers, which is what Hendrix needs, Karvoskie said. The 2008 season will be an exciting next step on the path to becoming a top team in the SCAC. Hendrix will open its 2008 campaign on Aug. 30 against Earlham College in Louisville, Ky. at 1:30 p.m. The Warriors home opener will be against Lindenwood University on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Hendrix kicks off conference play at Sewanee on Sept. 14 at 12 p.m.

2008 Preview Rhodes College Lynx After a strong 2007 season with a disappointing finish the Lynx look to reclaim the SCAC Championship and push onto the national scene in Rhodes finished the last 3 seasons ranked #2 in the Great Lakes Region, and now the Lynx are ready to take the lead. Among Rhodes 19 returning players are 7 starters from last season s line up including All SCAC selections Charlie Wagner, and Kristen Lee (2006). On the offensive end of the field the Lynx will rely on junior Callie Borgman and sophomores Lindsey Gurkovich, Libby Feaster, Kelly Kriegshauser and Hillary Relyea to lead the team to success in Gurkovich finished 5 th in points and tied for third in goals in the conference last season. Rhodes will also look for strong contributions offensively from several freshmen this season. SCAC Newcomer of the Year Charlie Wagner will lead a talented midfield this season from the center mid position. Charlie will be supported by senior Morgan Jane Mischer, a three year starter, as well junior Laura Deines, a key player for the Lynx in 2006 who will return to the lineup healthy in Kristen Lee, a two year starter and All SCAC selection will move from defense to midfield this season to help provide an offensive spark for the Lynx on the left side. Coach Wells will also look to sophomore Kelly Prak and several freshmen to provide solid minutes in the midfield. The Lynx return several talented defenders in 2008 including senior Maria Cowley, a three year starter and leader for the Lynx. As well as controlling play on the defensive end of the field the team will look to Maria to be a key player on offensive penalty corners. Sophomores Grier Haney and Rachel Webb return to the defensive line up and will be joined by junior Sarah Crowley and sophomore Claire Mantovani, who played in the midfield as a freshman. The Lynx will also look to utilize sophomores Alyssa Nucaro and Megan Cleary in the backfield. Junior goalkeepers Valerie Clarke and Meghan Cullen will be back in the cage for Rhodes this season. Rhodes will look to a talented group of freshmen to supplement the contributions of the 19 returning players this fall. The freshman class includes ten talented players, most of whom play offensive positions. The group includes forwards Allie Capes (Louisville, KY, Collegiate), Becca Diamond (Rockville, MD, Walter Johnson), Libby Jones (Prairie Village, KS, Pembroke Hill), and Taylor Mills (Oklahoma City, OK, Casady). Midfielders in the class of 2012 are Megan Hauver (Towson, MD, Garrison Forrest), Sarah Kennedy (Dallas, TX, Hockaday), and Molly Leonard (St. Louis, MO, Cor Jesu). Lucy Bell (Chapel Hill, NC, Chapel Hill), Sara Sanders (Louisville, KY, Collegiate) are Carolyn Drobak (St. Louis, MO, Ladue) will join the returning defenders this fall. With 29 players on the roster the Lynx will look to utilize their depth this season and propel themselves onto the national scene.

2008 Preview Sewanee University of the South Tigers After a successful 2007 season, the Sewanee Tigers are looking to improve on their record from last season. In 2007, the Tigers were 10-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play during the regular season. With seven seniors leading the way and ten returning starters, the team is looking to return to the conference tournament final once again this season. The Tiger s offense is lead by seniors Lynn Hancock and Julie Wilson, who are joined by Clare Ashburn, Taylor Skeen, Liza Ketcham, Hope Johnson, and Elise Landau. A combination of both skill and ball movement, will enable them to become an offensive threat. With ten different players scoring in the 2007 season, the team has hopes of continuing to spread the ball around again this season. With a strong midfield that has the ability to be an offensive threat as well as play strong defense, the tigers are going to rely heavily on this unit. Two seniors, Claiborne Buckingham and Mo Baptiste, will lead the midfield. In addition, the team is looking to Carly Grimm and Jen Caldwell to play a pivotal role in the midfield. On defense, the Tigers are looking forward to having another solid year. With three seniors (Elizabeth Wilber, Clarkie Crawford, and Ann Thomasson), the defensive unit has the ability and experience to deny opposing team s offensive attacks. Underclassmen, Caroline Carlin, Caitlin McNaughton, and Emily Detmer, are going to be playing a crucial role in the defensive unit as well this season. In addition to conference play, the Tigers have several non-conference games in this season as well. The Tigers start their season off on the road with two nonconference games against Ohio Wesleyan and Kenyon College in Ohio.
