1 Sept. - Oct Volume 43 Issue 5 Pacesetter TWO NJ BASED TRAINERS AND AN ORIGINAL MEADOWLANDS DRIVER INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME Results from the balloting for harness racing s highest honor, membership in the Harness Racing Hall of Fame, are in, and at the July 7, 2019, Hall of Fame induction dinner, a record number of six people will be feted as Hall of Fame inductees. New Jersey based trainers Joe Holloway and Linda Toscano, along with frequent Meadowlands driver Ted Wing were among the inductees. Joe Holloway started in the sport as a caretaker in his native Delaware when he was in grade school. Holloway connected with the uppermost level of the sport with his masterful handling of Jenna s Beach Boy, three-time Breeders Crown winner, twice Pacer of the Year, and a horse whose record for a race mile of 1:47.3 stood for a decade. Holloway, voted the sport s top trainer in 1995, has since buffed up his resume by developing She s A Great Lady, Shebestingin, and Somwherovrarainbow, as well as the handling of 1:46 pacer Always B Miki at two and three. Linda Toscano has long had a harness background association, dating back to her driving ponies in races when her age was in single digits. She served an apprenticeship with legendary New York City horseman Buddy Regan, then went out on her own in Toscano has attracted widespread attention throughout much of the current decade, including being named 2012 Trainer of the Year by USHWA; in that year alone she had the Hambletonian winner Market Share, but he was a (highclass) second fiddle that year to Horse of the Year winner Chapter Seven. The ill-fated Walner, champion 3-year-old Heston Blue Chip, and half-mile track world champion Jet Laag have also benefited from her care and tutelage. Ted Wing was an Olympic-caliber skier before suffering an injury, and the loss of the downhill sport was harness racing s gain, as the native of Maine captured titles in New England in his early years of the sport, then emerged as one of the leading horsemen in the founding days of The Meadowlands, balancing his racing at that track with regular duty at Roosevelt/Yonkers. Inducted into the New England Harness Racing Hall of Fame the same year as Bill O Donnell and Jim Doherty, who would later go on to the national Hall, Wing has been an important part in the success of such stars as Skip By Night, Gallo Blue Chip, Butler BG, and Calvert. The group will first be publicly honored at the USHWA Dan Patch Banquet, to be held on Feb. 24, 2019 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando Fla., where the Hall of Famers will take their first ensemble bow during the banquet honoring the top humans and equines of the previous year s racing. Then comes the July 7 formal induction to the Hall of Fame, at a dinner set just outside the building in which their likeness will be placed to immortalize their selection as harness racing s best of the best. 2 JOHN MCDERMOTT JR, JONATHAN KLEE & JEFF KUHEN CONTINUE TO HAVE SUCCESS WITH THEIR NJ BREDS The trainer and co-owners of the New Jersey-sired stallion Hurrikane Kingcole enjoyed much success with him as a racehorse and now as a sire. In 2012, Hurrikane Kingcole paced 1:48.1 at Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs to equal the then world record for a three-yearold on a five-eighths-mile track. Then in 2015 after going 2 for 2 on the season and posting a 1:49.4 win he suffered a broken splint bone and was retired to stud. fastest 2-year-old time to date. This win earns Hurrikane Emperor his sixth win in eight starts and brings his earnings to $214,400 for breeder and co-owner Jonathan Klee Racing. He is also owned by Kuhen Racing, Pegasis Investment Group, and Lind Racing Stable. Hurrikane Empress and driver Yannick Gingras. Photo Lisa Photo Hurrikane Emperor and driver Dan Dube. Photo Lisa Photo On Sunday (Sept 16) at the Red Mile Hurrikane Emperor, son of Hurrikane Kingcole, became a two-state champion for Mc- Dermott, Klee, Kuhen and their partners. Already a winner of the New Jersey Sires Stakes final, the John McDermott trainee captured the $250,000 KYSS final for 2-year-old pacing Colts at The Red Mile. Leading every step of the way, Hurrikane Emperor held off the competition to win in a blistering 1:49.3. Jonathan Klee said, This is a great win for New Jersey breeding, he is now a dual sire stakes champ and has posted the McDermott, Klee, Kuhen, and partners have also had success with the Hurrikane Kingcole filly Hurrikane Empress, a full sister to Hurrikane Emperor who won a leg of the KYSS for 3-year-old pacing fillies. As a 2-year-old, Hurrikane Empress was a NJSS champion and the winner of the New Jersey Futurity and Renaissance Final. To date, the filly has eight wins and earnings of over $180,000. McDermott, Klee, Kuhen, and partners are doing an amazing job with their New Jersey-sired horses. The trio has worked hard committing time and money to the New Jersey breeding program and are getting the results they deserve. 6 7TH ANNUAL OPEN SPACE PACE AT FREEHOLD RACEWAY On Saturday September 15, 2018 Freehold Raceway hosted the 7th Annual Open Space Pace. than $7.59 million as he continues on his farewell tour across North America. The Open Space Pace is a nonprofit organization with a mission to celebrate the horse, New Jersey s official state animal, and promote open space in the nations most densely populated state. After his win, Foiled Again joined the celebration by meeting his fans, posing for photos with them, and feeling the love. Photo John Sannucci 6 Photo John Sannucci The festival kicked off with a parade of horses marching through downtown Freehold starting at Monmouth City Hall of Records and ending at Freehold Raceway. Lead by Grand Marshall New Jersey Assemblyman Ronald S Dancer, son of a Harness Racing Hall of Famer Stanley Dancer. After the parade party really started with a variety of entertainment including live harness racing, a petting zoo, education exhibits, live music, vendor tables, food trucks and much more. With something for all ages, parents were able to enjoy themselves while the kids were preoccupied with their own activities. From the petting zoo to the always popular bounce house kids had plenty to keep their attention. The Harness Horse Youth Foundation was on the apron to educate children and adults on the ins and outs of the harness racing industry, while live racing commenced on the racetrack. The soon to be Hall of Fame member, Foiled Again headlined the race card winning the first race for his 103rd time. Returning to the same track where he won his very first race 12 years ago as a 2-year-old. The now 14 year old Foiled Again has won more The racing action continued with the feature of the day the $50,000 New Jersey Standardbred Development Fund Final for 2-year-old filly pacers. The Mark Harder trainee Surreality led at every call to best the hard charging second place finisher Hurrikane Lori Ann and third place Surrealism. The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey was present with their booth to inform the public of the importance of an alternative source of revenue for the Standardbred industry to continue to thrive in New Jersey. All the while having fun activities for the kids to do like decorating a previously used horseshoe. Throughout the day, The Open Space Pace awarded seven one-thousand-dollar college scholarships. This years Open Space Pace was another successful one with attendees enjoying everything from food and music to live racing and educational information on equine issues.
7 From The Desk Of President Mark Ford Dear Members, I had hoped to be able to announce information regarding the finalization of a new state budget appropriation to benefit the racing industry, but several details are still being worked out. However, I want you to know that members of our organization have worked tirelessly on this issue. We have attended countless meetings, hearings and fundraisers in an effort to educate legislators about the needs of our industry. I want to thank everyone involved because this work has made a difference. More and more people are recognizing the importance of this industry to the state in terms of revenue, jobs and quality of life, and are taking steps to not only preserve it but enhance it. The legislation on the table would benefit our industry across the board, from the breeding sheds to the racetracks. Work to finalize the appropriations is a fluid process, but we hope it will be completed soon. Details regarding race dates and new contracts with the Meadowlands and Freehold are on hold for the moment pending the outcome of the legislation, which makes its timely approval of utmost importance. In other legislative news, the bill that would exempt horse boarding from state sales tax, which already passed the Assembly in a vote, remains in the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. It is hope there will be action on the bill in the near future. We will provide news regarding these bills as it becomes available. Thank you, again, for all the hard work to strengthen our industry.
