This is the 30th meeting between Youngstown State and Valparaiso in a series that dates back to The Crusaders own a 22-7 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last 10 contests. Last season, the Crusaders defeated the Penguins twice by a combined margin of six points. Valpo won, at the Athletics-Recreation, and 77-75, last season at the Beeghly Center. In the last meeting at Beeghly, Vytas Sulskis posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum is one of 18 active coaches with more than 600 career victories. He currently ranks sixth among active Division I coaches with 635 career wins. Valparaiso Head Coach Homer Drew has 627 career wins. Senior Vytas Sulskis ranks 21st all-time with 1,121 career points and needs 10 more point to move into 20th place on the all-time list. He became the 32nd player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career after scoring 22 against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 27. Sophomore Damian Eargle leads the Horizon League with 2.9 blocks per game. His 38 blocked shots rank fifth on the YSU single-season list. He needs two more to move into fourth past David Brown, who had 39 in He has collected 32 over the last 10 games, including a careerhigh six against both Malone on Dec. 13 and Toledo on Nov. 24. Junior Ashen Ward set a career-high with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, including seven 3-pointers, in the Guins win over UIC on Dec. 30. With 22 points against Kent State on Dec. 21, senior Vytas Sulskis recorded his fifth 20-point performance of the season. Freshman Kendrick Perry ranks eighth in the Horizon League with 3.4 assists per game. Perry scored 13 points with five rebounds and five assists against Kent State (12/21). He scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field against Saint Francis (Pa.) (11/27). Senior Vytas Sulskis continues to move up the Youngstown State all-time 3-point chart. With 10 more points, he would move into 20th place on the all-time list past Bob Atterholt (1, ). WARD HAS CAREER NIGHT Junior Ashen Ward turned in a career performance against UIC on Dec. 30. Ward scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Ward set career highs in points, field-goals made and 3-point field-goals made. His seven 3-pointers made rank tied for fourth most made in a single-game. The school record is 11 by Mike Alcorn against Pitt- Bradford on Feb. 24, It was also the most 3-pointers made since Quin Humphrey made eight against Detroit on Feb. 14, BREWER ON THE BOARDS Over the last five games, junior Tre Brewer is averaging seven rebounds per game. He is also averaging 5.8 points and 3.6 assists per game in that stretch. Brewer recorded a career-high 14 rebounds against Malone on Dec. 13 and PENGUIN BASKETBALL GAME NOTES grabbed a team-high nine against UIC on Dec. 30. For the season, Brewer is averaging five points and five rebounds per game. EARGLE BLOCK PARTY Sophomore Damian Eargle leads the Horizon League and ranks 12th nationally with 2.9 blocks per game. He has collected 32 over the last 10 games, including a career-high six against Malone on Dec. 13 and Toledo on Nov. 24. Eargle has tallied at least three blocks in eight of the 13 games played and had at least five blocks in four different game. Eargle also has 38 of the Guins 62 blocks on the season. GUINS LEAGUE LEADERS With 99 3-pointers made this season, the Guins lead the Horizon League with pointers made per game VISION Senior Vytas Sulskis and sophomore Damian Eargle each scored 20-plus points against Malone on Dec. 13. Sulskis scored a season-high 25 while Eargle posted 24. It was the first time two YSU players scored at least 20 points in the same game since DeAndre Mays (22) and Sulskis (21) accomplished the feat at UIC on Feb. 6, Sulskis has also scored at least 20 points five times this season and 13 times in his career. SULSKIS AMONG STAT LEADERS Senior Vytas Sulskis name can be found all over the Horizon League statistical leaderboard. Sulskis fourth in the Horizon League in 3-point field-goal percentage (.431) and overall fieldgoal percentage (.541), seventh in rebounding (5.8 rpg) and ninth in scoring (15.5 ppg). BREW CREW In his first career start, junior Tre Brewer posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds - both career highs. Brewer also had a 10-rebound effort in a win over Buffalo on Nov. 16. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE The double-doubles by Damian Eargle and Tre Brewer against Malone on Dec. 13 marked the first time two Guins have posted a doubledouble in the same game since Vytas Sulskis (24 points, 11 rebounds) and DeAndre Mays (16 points, 10 assists) did so against Valparaiso on Feb. 13, SULSKIS STREAK REACHES CENTURY Against NC State, Senior Vytas Sulskis played in his 100th straight game for Youngstown State. Sulskis has played in every game in his career consecutive - and has made 70 career starts. TRIPLE TRIFECTA Earlier this season, the Guins accomplished a feat never achieved before in school history. The Guins made at least 10 3-pointers in three straight games. They made 10 in a loss to Akron (11/20), 11 against Toledo (11/24) and 10 in the win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (11/27). SULSKIS CLIMBING 3-POINT CHART Senior Vytas Sulskis continues to move up the Youngstown State all-time 3-point chart. With a 3-pointer against Loyola on Jan. 1, Sulskis ranks fourth all-time with 148 career 3-pointers. YSU had just point plus performances from Feb to Dec GUINS SIGN ZUIKER Youngstown State signed 6-foot-9 forward Cale Zuiker (ZIKE-er) to a national letter of intent during the early signing period. Last season as a junior, Zuiker, who scored 312 points last year, was a unanimous First-Team All-Wisconsin Valley Conference selection after averaging 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and three blocks per game. He also led Marshfield High School to its first conference title since 1992 and tied a school record for wins in a season with 18. 5
