3 Men`s President`s Report has started off with great success. Clem Magee has the Men`s Competition under-way. Peter Lawton is doing a great job on organising Tuesday`s Mixed Bowls. Also Jeff Slater is doing a great job organising the Thursday`s Men`s Bowls. Gordon Dobson & Len Harris has Saturdays Bowls under control and Marion Dobbs and Jeff Slater have Sunday Bowls under control. Thanks to Brian Hegarty & Norm Diplock and their lovely wives for doing Community (Twilight Bowls) every second Thursday Night. Secretary Phil Robinson is a great person and puts a lot of effort in his role as Secretary of the Men`s Committee. Jack Attack kicks off on the 6 th of April and the Mens & Ladies Committee will support the Competition with full support. Don`t forget to support the selling of the Footy Doubles starting on March 8 th. It was sad to see Colin Gough ending his playing career since 1964 due to ill health. However Col will remain as a Full Member of our great club. Col and his lovely wife have now shifted to Brisbane where more medical treatment is readily available. Col has kindly donated his club uniforms to the club. This is very much appreciated. We will all miss seeing you around the club. Travelodge day was a great success. Winners on the day were Ron Hill, Neville Grewe and Peter Tyler. The Travelodge support is greatly appreciated. Thanks to my Committee for your support each month. Notes from your Secretary, Bernie Gottke A future planning meeting was held on Wednesday February 21 st. Main points of interest were:- More attention to be given to the back entry to the club. Although it is the back entry it is the most used entry to the club by our members. This will also include access to upstairs. (People mostly judge on their first sight of anything) Access to upstairs will be better now the lift is installed. Upstairs to be redesigned to relocate the bar to cater for larger functions. 4 Downstairs to be upgraded further that caters for BBQs and Functions that keeps the club more financially viable. Our telephone system to be updated to cater for callers wanting a particular section of the club. These callers will be asked to press 1, 2 or 3 depending who they want. (more details will be given when this system is installed) Continue to complete jobs now in progress. As part of the succession plan for the Secretary the following arrangement will take place. Joan Wilson will carry out the normal duties of the Secretary. Bernie Gottke will continue with the Newsletter. Manage all functions required by community groups. Continue to pursue grants for the club. Assist Joan when required. Other notes. Another grant has been successful for the training courses for the following. Technical Training for Internet/technology, marketing to attract new members, media including Facebook. How to recruit more women/girls to participate. Volunteer training workshop strategies to recruit Children/youth participates. The Gracemere Club has been included in this training. Please consider taking advantage of these courses. 5 Chairman s Report It s great to see the lift finally installed. This will be a great asset to the club going forward as it will assist our aging membership and those members and guests with disabilities by improving access to all part of the club. Congratulations to our Secretary Bernie Gottke whose hard work has seen this project come to fruition. The team from Larson s Lifts have done a fantastic job. Thanks. On a sad note, one of our members had her handbag stolen from the BBQ end of the grandstand while members were inside the club immediately prior to the start of our resent social game against Gracemere. Although the handbag was recovered a short time later, a purse containing cash and cards had been taken. The thieves had also used the cards purchasing items worth a considerable amount of money. The incident was very distressing for the member involved. Members are reminded to take all possible steps to protect the security of personal belongings while on the club premises. The management committee will investigate additional security cameras for the side entrance and the grandstand area. These would supplement our existing security cameras installed in the club. Twilight bowls starts on 1 March at 7:30pm concluding at 9:30. Hot finger food will be available on the bar during the break and on the bar after the game. Normal $10 green fees apply. Twilight bowls are for club members. New members are encouraged to come along as are members of other affiliated clubs. It has been decided that the BPL format of play will not be introduced at this time. Joan Wilson has been appointed as an Assistant Secretary under the guidance of the Secretary for the remainder of the year. Mark Whittaker who was appointed as our Assistant Treasurer has not been able to fill the role due medical issues (operations on arm and knee). Although Mark is recovering well, changed employment circumstances will continue to prevent Mark from assuming these treasury duties. Ann-Louise Tyler has agreed to continue as the Assistant Treasurer and will be assisted by Bev Johnson. Thanks Ladies. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 5

6 Please ensure that your bowls bag has you name clearly printed on it. At the end of March any unidentified bowls bag will be removed to a storage area in the back shed until the owner can be identified. The action is being taken to free up space in the bowls room and make more room for members to store their bowls off the floor. Functions Volunteers - You may be approached shortly to nominate as a volunteer Barperson, Bowls supervisor, BBQ Chef or to prepare salads. It is hoped to form all volunteers into teams this year so that the work load is not left to the few regulars. If you can help in some capacity, please see Bernie or myself. P Tyler, P Hedges, K Gayle, B Gottke How quickly this month has slipped by. It is lovely to see everyone back again and all in good health. Competitions have started unfortunately with a bit of a set back by having to be cancelled due to the extreme heat. It would not have been safe or comfortable to play on that day, heat stroke can occur inside as well as outside. However, the next Wednesday s competition more than made up for the lost day. Pairs were played all to a close finish; exciting close games are great. Congratulations to the successful teams. Another great day of competition was played this Wednesday All meetings have been attended including a special for the five year planning, there are lots of ideas to think about for the future of the club. 7 The air-conditioning upstairs is bliss. Pat Wiemers, Bernie Gottke and I visited Hillcrest Hospital to present three years of appreciation plaques from the club for their generous sponsorships. Janet Stewart President RBC After almost three years of applying for grants, the lift is now a reality. The lift itself is a little up market to what was ordered as it is the latest version of this type of lift. John Larsen has offered to stand the extra cost of around $4, This lift has a few more safety features and indicators. The lift will always return to the ground floor. If used to go upstairs, the lift will automatically return to the ground floor. Outside buttons will be an up arrow or a down arrow. Inside will be three buttons in a row, G (ground floor) 1 (green level) 2 (upstairs) A fourth lower button is a button to press in an emergency to phone for help. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PRESS THIS BUTTON ACCIDENTLY. Other safety features is if you stand too close to the doors the lift will not work or if the lift is moving it will stop. It is recommended that only 2 people with their bowls bags use the lift at any one time. If no luggage is being carried 3 to 4 people can use the lift but must keep clear of the doors. I wish to thank John Larsen for his patience, advice and help over the last couple of years. Also his workers that did a great job in installing the lift in such a difficult place. The help I first received was from Leanne Cordero of Complete Performance Solutions on the Sunshine Coast. During the second year I received a huge amount of advice and assistance from Mellissa Findlay who is from the Queensland Sport & Recreation & National Parks. Brad Robson from the Rockhampton Regional Council who assisted me with the plans and getting approval for the project. The ever willing Jeff Slater whose assistance is always there and appreciated. 8 It was with very sad news that our longest serving member Colin Gough passed away after a long battle with cancer. Colin joined the club in 1964 and continued to be a full member to the end of 2018 being his 54 th year at RBC. Colin Gough won the Club`s A Grade Singles in Previous member, Geoff Chillingworth also passed last week. Geoff Chillingworth also won the Club`s A Grade Singles in When it comes to the aims of the club, where are we heading, what is important, how we see things, how we survive and etc. we all have different views and priorities. Decisions depends to a large extent on the responsibilities various people have in a club to what their decision is compared to others that have no responsibility for any decision made. The main aim is to all work together to achieve the best facility to cover all the directions the club must have to survive and to maintain what we have and to keep progressing. 9 If you were wondering how they managed to get this lift into place without using machinery or cranes, the photos below will tell you. The lift came in two sections; the main section (bottom section) was lifted through the front fence. John Larsen had installed wheels under this section. The section was rolled over onto the wheels and wheeled into place. The wheels were removed and lowered into the lift well using a chain block and a portable electric lift. The top section, being much lighter was carried and bolted to the top of the bottom section. Now having the lift in place all wiring and assembly of the lift was carried out. 10 O n th e ro a d w it h M ic h e ll e L a n d ry M P Over the last few weeks, between Parliament sittings I have been very busy within the Capricornia Electorate. Here are just a few things I have been up to. I travelled to Mackay where, with David Littleproud (Minister for Agriculture) and George Christensen (Federal Member for Dawson), we met with local canegrowers to discuss how important the sugar industry is for our economy. David and I got to investigate the inner workings of the Racecourse Sugar Mill, a great local jobcreator. I was very proud to be able to attend and speak at the opening of the 'Bruce Acutt Centre' at Cockscomb Veteran's Bush Retreat. The 'Bruce Acutt Centre' is a shed that we were able to donate after Cyclone Marcia caused significant damage. A wonderful effort by the community to construct and deliver the shed. Finally, it was fantastic to attend Frenchville State School's Student Leadership Investiture. It was wonderful to see such impressive young people as School Leaders. I had the pleasure of presenting Tahlia Parish and Brayden Huff their School Captain Badges.
