October 2017 Newsletter Volume 09 Issue 10 October 2017 RBC 94 Victoria Parade Rockhampton. PO Box 6163 Red Hill Rockhampton 4701 Qld. Phone Website Find RBC on Facebook Club News Michelle Landry Working for the Community. The Finals of the Jack Attack was played on Friday Night September 8 th. Winners of the Competition were Jack Blackburn, Jeff Blackburn and Beau Blackburn. The Capricornian Business and Development Manager, Brian Auld presented the prizes to the winning Teams. 2 Brian Auld with the Runners-up, from the left, Jae Walters, Karen Paroz and Melissa Genninges. From the experience of conducting two Jack Attack Programs it has become very clear why Jack Attack has been so popular in the Cities for about 10 years now. Does this reinforce the view that Regional Clubs are at least 10 years behind the times. Players from Yeppoon, Diggers and some of our own players have used the spare rinks to play Jack Attack? All were in agreement that our complex at night is well suited for this version of the game. Thanks to Trent Shillington and Peter Thurecht for all their great organising of this version of bowling for the Management Committee. Also thanks to the Members (Ladies & Men) who helped to make this so successful. As always we will now consider how we can improve on what we did this year to make Jack Attack even better for next year. We also recognise all the help from Paul Jackson from Bowls Australia. Every request for help was answered immediately by Mr. Jackson. We wish Trent Smalley and his team who is representing our area every success in the State Finals. We are one step closer to having a lift installed. The Rockhampton Regional Council has approved our application and plans for the lift. The cooperation and the help from our Regional Council employees have been marvelous and very much appreciated. Kellie Lindsay from the Boomerang Foundation held a seminar at our Club with members from the community & Council to inform them to start to plan for the introduction of not using plastic bags and a refund for cans/beer bottles and plastic bottles, all 10 cents each. In actual fact these products will be 10 cents dearer to purchase. No doubt existing or new organisations will offer Clubs all sorts of containers to store these items in. How this may work is these organisations will give the clubs storage bins and pay the clubs 10 cents per item in the bin. These organisations will then claim a handling charge to the Government or some other organisation around 4 cents per item and return them to a depot for around14 cents per item. 3 Chairman s Report. The flu season struck with a vengeance this year and a number of members were affected including me. Definitely making sure I get my flu shot next year. If you have been crook, I wish you a speedy recovery. Well done to Jeff Slater for tiling the shower and toilet area in the back shed. The renovations have come up even better than I was hoping for. Just a few minor finishing touches such as shower curtain, mirror, clothes hooks, towel rail and small shelf and the job will be complete. Since the last newsletter we were advised by Bowls Australia that RBC is a finalist for the award of Bowls Club of the Year. There are only two finalists, RBC and the Torquay Bowls Club (Vic). This is a huge honour for our club and indicates that we going in the right direction. The award will be announced at the Bowls Australia Awards Night on 26 Oct 2017 at the Crown Plaza, Gold Coast. Secretary Bernie and I will be attending the award night and hopefully bring home the prize. Win lose or draw the club will be celebrating the nomination/award with a free BBQ brunch and bowls day for all members. Date to be advised. With only a couple of months left until our Annual General Meeting now is the time to think about how you can get more involved. Our generally healthy financial position is only achievable each year because we operate only using volunteers. However, any significant reduction in our volunteer base will expose the club to financial risk. We have had a few fantastic helpers this year who continually make themselves available week in and week out. They all need a break. If other members don t come forward to take on some of the tasks, we may have little choice but to start paying people to enable us to meet our obligation with respect to running functions, one of our greatest income sources. We would then be forced to consider cost increases. This is not what your management group or the members would want to see happen. Even putting your hand up once or twice every few months would assist greatly. Please consider what you can do to help your club. Happy Bowling Peter Tyler OAM, CHAIRMAN Comments from your Secretary. Club Award. You will ask, How did we get considered for such an award? Over the years a lot of Bowling Clubs have folded due to the fact that committees failed to recognise that for a club to survive, they must embrace a lot more than Traditional Bowls. Club Committees must think outside the square and adopt initiatives of its own or initiatives that have worked for other successful clubs. Over the past few years your club has taken every opportunity to be more involved within the community with Bare Foot Bowling & Functions. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 3
Using the present day media of Facebook, the Website and even our newsletter to promote our Club to the wider community. Continuing with initiatives we tried Jack Attack. This form of the game was first brought to the attention to the Club by Brian Hegarty who came across it in Western Australia. The game was called scroungers. Bernie Gottke also played the game at a Club north of Perth in WA. and considered it was fun to play. In 2012 Bernie organised this type of bowling for the volunteers at his Volunteer`s breakfast. Also again in 2013 & 2014 at the Volunteer`s breakfast. Although it was discussed at committee meetings occasionally, nothing eventuated. Bowls Australia Representative, Paul Jackson spoke about Jack Attack to the committee in 2017 and consideration was being given to it. However when Bob Burton invited Paul Jackson back to the Club to talk about Jack Attack a few more members showed some interest in it. This gave our Chairman the opportunity to push the idea further. Trent Shillington & Peter Thurecht adopted the format and did a marvelous job using Facebook to promote Jack Attack. Bowls Australia was then able to see the progress made with Jack Attack on Facebook. Paul Jackson was also able to see the progressive nature of the Management Committee to move outside the square to ensure the viability of the Club in the long term. Although there was virtually no income being involved in the PBL Competition your Management Committee could see a different award by having RBC on the Australian Calendar for hosting such an event. This gave your Club, Australia wide exposure. Being one of the very few clubs in Regional Queensland to show interest in the PBL Competition was also seen by Bowls Australia. One can now say with authority that the direction your Management Committee has taken over the past number of years has been completely justified by being recognised in the top two progressive Clubs in Australia. We are now coming into that part of the year when Social Clubs, Companies and Business people have functions for their staff & etc. We ask the members that are able to volunteer to volunteer to help run these functions. This is a good way to see the inner workings of your Club and to consider being on one of the various committees. Many hands make light work. Your Management Committee will be working on plans to improve your facility for High on the list is to shift the bar up-stairs and open up the whole room for functions/weddings. Also to replace the chairs and more suitable tables for weddings and functions. If you have any ideas, please give them to the Secretary, Bernie Gottke. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 4
Words cannot describe all the fun and laughter that went on during the weddings with a difference. At the start of the weddings, M of C, Eileen Cavanagh said, I hope this section of our morning tea sends you home with a smile on your face. I`d like to say that our ladies and gentlemen have been practicing for weeks but there is no rehearsals here- just straight in to action. We promised weddings with a difference so we hope we deliver. It was with great expense that we were lucky to receive the good Father, Fitzgerald ( Fitz) to officiate with the weddings. The role of Father Fitz was played by Norm Diplock. Shot Gun Wedding. Father of the Bride (Noel Roberts) escorted his daughter (Rosemary Rumpf) and her intended husband (Debbie Simpson) for Father Fitz to marry them. Father Fitz commented on the Brides condition that they are getting married, Just in time The second marriage (Hippies) takes you back to the 1960s when the culture sprung up among young people. Those were the days of flower power. Their mantra was making love not war. I don`t know if it was flower power or making love that brought these two to get married. I am sure when you see them it will take you back to the days when beads, flowing locks and flowers etc were the norm. Mirriam Black played the role of the husband and Sue Lane the wife. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 5
Oldies. These 2 Senior citizens Ken & Barbie met at Eventide home and it was a case of love at first sight. As well as loving one another they both love playing bowls and have just found the time in between competitions to seal their love by getting married. The Groom arrived with his bag of bowls ready to take off bowling as soon as the ceremonies were finished. This role was played by the Ladies President, Janet Stewart. The Bride was played by Bev Johnston. However complications arose when a second Bride (Del Moger) arrived to marry the Groom. Father Fitz had a Hell of a time to sort this out. Bikies. Well they say you are never too old for anything. Did you hear that motor bike pull up outside? That was big Daddy (Evelyn Kelly) with his Bride, Little Mumma (Joy Liddell) on their Harley. After terrorizing their neighbours for years, Big Daddy has decided as he has turned 90 & it s time to settle down and marry his sweet heart, Little Mumma. He`s not as fast on his feet as the Harley so it may take a few minutes to get to the altar. They just might need this Hospital. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 6
Gangsters Wedding. Be warned our next couple is not to be trifled with. These two know how to look after themselves. You`ll know what they mean when you see them. Here to get married are Clyde who will be waiting for Bonnie his partner in crime. Marion Dobbs is Bonnie and Carol Wellings is Clyde. Beach Wedding. Ann Thomas and Rosemary Rumpf. Well love is in the air especially the sea air. It was just the stimulation this couple needed to decide to wear their beach clobber for their marriage. It gives them that wonderful feeling of freedom. It could also be that s all they could afford. Val King and June Shelton playing the Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 7

The morning ended with the monster raffles where all prizes are donated. The fund raising day is also made more profitable by all the ladies cooking cakes and making sandwiches. 11 There is not a lot to report for September Men s President s Report Thank you to Noel Roberts for organising the teams to Presidents Days at Theodore and Past Presidents. I believe the teams had some exciting games with either a big win or a big loss. At the end of the day I hope you all enjoyed the occasion and the company of fellow bowlers. Unfortunately for me I will not be able to resume playing for another couple of weeks, and we have NRBC President s Day on 7 th October 2017 and CQDMBA President s Day on 14 th October 2017, if anybody would like to look after these days and arrange a team please see me urgently so that we can respond to these invitations. Congratulations to Andy Johnson and Peter Pidcock for winning the final of the Club District Pairs after a very close contest with Mark and Peter Tyler. The result coming down to a very tight measure on the last end. Wishing Andy and Peter all the best for the Playoffs starting on Saturday 28 th October We are hosting The Capricornian Mixed Fours on Saturday 30 th September I am disappointed with the numbers for this tournament. However, I am sure that there will be some wonderful bowls played. I will be suggesting that we look at an alternate date next year that doesn t clash with a big money competition at Calliope and also the long weekend. On a happy note we had a good rollup for the Travelodge sponsored afternoon with everybody having a good time. Thank you to Peter Lawton for looking after this afternoon. You did a great job and it was appreciated. On a sad note we lost the bragging rights when we had the return match at Gracemere. Unfortunately Gracemere beat us. Although, they made us feel welcome and looked after us. Thanks to Nick Jones and his band of workers for a great afternoon of bowls. I know that we have a number of bowlers recovering from recent operations and others who are on the sick list. On behalf of all members I wish you all a speedy recovery. Coming to the end of the year all positions on the men s committee will become vacant. I ask all men to give consideration to taking up an executive or committee position to ensure that this great bowls club can progress into the future to provide opportunities for this wonderful sport. Great bowling everybody. Tony Zonca Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 11
Ladies President`s Report The month s calendar didn t reflect the business of the month, which turned out to be very busy. Our Morning Tea was a great success, there s no telling how a wedding will work out as shown by our very talented and innovative members. From what I have heard everyone enjoyed themselves and the weddings very much. This Morning Tea would not have been such a success without the careful planning and enthusiasm of the participants, the members who gave so much of their time, to donated not only gifts for the Multidraw, Lucky Door and raffles, and provide the yummy slices, cakes and sandwiches. A big thank you to all members whatever role they played. My thanks to the teams who attended both Yeppoon and Diggers Presidents Days, as well thanks to the Patroness team for Yeppoon, once again excellent reports for both events. It is unfortunate that we were unable to field a team for Wowan Presidents Day, or for District Triples. It is pleasing to note how many of our members attend other clubs events. Well done everyone Card Game month again. Unfortunately, numbers are falling but still have a reasonable number of players I believe. It would be nice if more men came and participated. We must remember that the club has been amalgamated for some time and that it is one big club, no longer Her or His club. This year is moving along too fast to keep up with soon we will be preparing for end of year activities. 13 On Saturday September 30 th. the Capricornian sponsored their Mixed Fours Competition. The Capricornian has been sponsoring events for RBC since teams played 3 games of 16 ends each. The Grant for the Mayoral Trophy has been approved. The Sponsorship from Travelodge has also been approved for Part of this sponsorship is $1, to be used for 5 sponsored days of prize money for our members. This is greatly appreciated by the RBC and I give our sincere thanks to Kasey Beasy, the local Manager of Travelodge. More details are coming to light about the Bowls Australia Awards Night. This is a great occasion for Bowls. On the night recognition is given to the very best in Australia. Best male & female Bowler including the U18 bowlers. International Bowlers of the year, the best Regional Bowls Manager, the best Coach of the year, the best story of the year, the best Volunteer of the year, the best Bowler with a disability of the year, the best Club of the year, the best Volunteer Administrator of the year and Bowlers being inducted into the Hall of Fame. For RBC to be nominated in the top two Clubs (not just from the bush) but from all over Australia is a great honour for the RBC Committees but for all our members. A Jack Attack program is designed for a person that has never bowled before or has done some bare foot bowling. A second version is for people that are bowlers. This is called the Professional Bowling League (PBL) You can see this version on SBS at 3.30 pm on a Sunday. Over the years bowls have been left behind with regard to expanding their game. Football have short versions of the game, (Touch Football) Cricket the 20/20 version and so on. Jack attack is now the short version of bowling. People now live busy lives & all sporting codes must cater for busy people. RBC must keep going down this path now that we have broken the ice. Although we did not win the local PBL Competition, we are proud to support the Team from Central Queensland to compete in the State Finals. 14 On the road with Michelle Landry MP Over the last few weeks the Parliament has been in recess - meaning that I am able to spend time traveling throughout the electorate. With Capricornia being one of the largest Federal electorates (over 90,000 sq.km's), it's a mighty task. I've travelled to Moranbah where I met with a number of small businesses, cattle graziers and coal miners. All of the businesses I spoke to told me that business is picking up and more people are spending money locally. I also met with Blair and Josie Angus from Signature Beef. Blair and Josie are currently in the process of building one of the only privately owned abattoirs in the state. This will be a huge boost to local graziers and the Moranbah community as a whole. I also travelled to Mackay where, with Luke Hartsuyker (Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister), we met with a number of local farmers who are doing great things and trying new farming techniques, due to the assistance Landcare is providing them. It was great to pop into Freckle Farm, where Deb McLucas is building up a marvellous small business, selling free-range eggs, pork and beef to local cafes, businesses and at the local Farmers Market weekly in Mackay. Finally, it was fantastic to meet with students from Walkerston State School in the last Parliamentary sitting week. A large number of the Grade 5/6 students travelled down to Sydney and then Canberra to experience the nation s capital and learn more about our system of Government. It was great to meet with them while they were involved in 'Mock Parliament' While it' been a full few months delivering on our promises for Capricornia, if you have any issues or enquiries, please don't hesitate to contact my office on or michelle.landry.mp@aph.gov.au.
