July 2018 Newsletter Volume 10 Issue 07 July 2018 RBC 94 Victoria Parade Rockhampton. PO Box 6163 Red Hill Rockhampton 4701 Qld. Phone Website Find RBC on Facebook Club News Last year the RBC Chairman, Peter Tyler & Secretary, Bernie Gottke had the opportunity to meet and confer with the Representatives from the Victorian Torquay Bowls Club that won the best Club in Australia Award. Their Secretary Rosemary Canning while passing through Rockhampton on holidays called in and spent 5 hours with Peter and Bernie to give them an insight to why they have become so successful over the past several years. What became very clear was the fact that their endeavour to operate as a business by a Management Committee was met with a lot of resistance from some members who were anchored in past practices of days long ago. However careful planning gradually received the backing of most members. This Club is now a very successful club and is going from strength to strength. It was very interesting to note that the RBC Management Committee is steering your Club in a very similar direction. Rosemary shared with your Secretary all the documents they operate within. Some of which were formulated by professional people. These documents included Strategic Bowls Plan, Marketing Procedures, Hire Terms & Conditions, Charity Activities and Code of Conduct for Members, Standards & Behavior, Bowls Etiquette, Twilight History, Profile of Bowls, Pennants Information requirements, Membership & Volunteers. Reading all these documents will no doubt give RBC the opportunity to enhance our own documents of a similar nature. We have permission to do this as a goodwill gesture from The Victorian Torqauy Bowls Club.
Following this meeting with Rosemary your Chairman & Secretary had a meeting by phone with Selina Scoble to better formulate the Club`s 5 year plan. What became very clear is the fact that the Rockhampton Bowls Club can also go from strength to strength. These plans formulated for future years must be supported by future Committees & Members. The Torquay Bowls Club has this commitment by having a Management Structure that has the power to operate as a Business and supported by most members. RBC should revise their structure to also have the power to operate as a business and be supported by the members. We are in a great demographic position to do this. In appreciation of our members supporting their club and the long term visitors from the south, the Management Committee with help from the Men`s & Ladies Committees held a free breakfast and a free morning of bowls. Below are photos of the occasion. Chairman s Report July 2018 June was a sad month for the Club with the passing of Pat Fulwood. Pat was a Life Member of RBC and had a very long and distinguished involvement with the club. Husband Les, also a Life Member of RBC, appreciated the many club members who turned out in full uniform to pay their respects at the service held at St Joseph s Cathedral on Friday 22 June 2018 and later at the Club where many fond memories and stories of Pat were shared by family and friends. RIP Patricia Mary Fulwood.
Jack Attack Winners Season PHOTO: L-R Jae Walters and Karen Paroz and Mellissa Genninges. Congratulations to the Overarmers who won the 2018 final of Season 1 of RBC s Jack Attack program. Team members were Jae Walters, Karen Paroz and Mellissa Genninges. Jae and Karen are full members of RBC and are starting to play in our Twilight competition. Jae and Karen were also our JA conveners for 2018 and have done a great job. Brian Auld from the Capricornian was on hand to watch the final and to present the Capricornian Shield to the Overarmers and present the winners trophies. Runners up were Purple Bandits and they also presented with medallions. There already seem to be interest in Season 2 (2018) with a number of new teams expressing interest in this fun style of lawn Bowls. The commencement dates for JA Season 2 has yet to be determined by our Bowls Committees but it may be around mid to late August It is fantastic to see both Pennants team performing so well. One of the Club s key objectives is to excel on the Green as well as off. Congratulations to both Divisions on performances to date and good luck in the final few rounds. On Sunday 17 June the club put on a free breakfast and bowls morning. Over 40 members turned up to enjoy a full buffet or continental style breakfast. Thanks to everyone who attended and made it a very worthwhile event which was enjoyed by all. Thanks also to Max Littleton for your assistance on the BBQ. We are approaching the time when members need to be considering the capacity to which they are prepared to help the club in Many of our older members have had their turn in leadership roles, some over many years. It is now time for others to step up. If you have the ability to fill a committee role in 2019, please put your hand up now so you can be shown what is actually involved in the various positions. The strength and success of clubs such as ours lies with those members prepared to get involved with the decision making.
Don t sit back and leave it to others. Please get involved. You will find as I have that it a very rewarding experience. The time has come to make a start on refurbishment and modernisation of the upstairs lounge area. A sub-committee will be established to look into the scope of work required including work that can be done in-house. If this is a project that you would be interested in helping with please let me know. The Settlers Plate two bowl triples event is drawing near. If you haven t entered this event yet please consider doing so as soon as possible. Settlers are a new and valued sponsor of RBC and we are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship. Looking for a new place to retire? Check out Settlers. Happy Bowling Peter Tyler Chairman VALE - PATRICIA MARY FULWOOD (Better known as Pat or Patsy Bowler Friend - Confidante) On Friday the 22 nd June we said our sad goodbye to our much loved and respected Life Member Pat Fulwood. She suffered a fall a couple of days previously which led to her passing on Friday 15 th June.
Whilst we celebrated, remembered and gave thanks for her presence in our life at her funeral mass at St.Joseph's Cathedral this is a small part of her life as a bowler at R.B.C. Following in the footsteps of her mother and father Pat s bowling career started on 26 th March years ago. In those many years she had an impressive list of achievements that the rest of us can only dream about. Not only that, she had Les at her side for all those years as well. He too was a champion A grade player and still knows how to outwit the opposition and win games! Patsy had been the champion singles player 7 times during 1985 to She actually won all 3 divisions A-B-C in Pairs 5 times Triples 11times and fours 5 times Consistency singles 8 times every year from 1989 to 1997, except I don't know what happened in maybe she decided to give someone else a chance. Added to that impressive list are District Games, Masters, Mollie Bradford Shield, other clubs bigger competitions.some of the ladies she shared these successes with were her sister Marg Reddy, Maureen Callow, Dorothy McLeod, Pat Irvine and Fay Millar. With Les she travelled to other centres and state games and always had many successes, her badges, scrapbooks and albums are testament to those. Patsy would never play a game of bowls without the flag flying. She told me once it was a sign that bowls would be played at that club on that day. Pat was also a Games Director and always did her best to accommodate the ladies if they couldn't play when called or hadn't written their name in the absentee book. She was always available to impart her knowledge to a new games director who had taken on the job for the first time. She had the most wonderful memory about her bowls which she played with and against, where she played and how many shots she won or lost by etc. Pat was the person who you would go to if you wanted to know something about the laws of the game. She always had the right answer. She was also the person I respected most when it came to our Morning Tea skits or telling jokes. If there was the slightest chance that someone could be offended
by something that was said or done I always thought would Patsy approve? If I thought the answer would be no those ideas would be scrapped. In spite of all those successes Pat always remained the same well groomed lovely lady always calm, kind and thoughtful interested in others and willing to impart her knowledge to any younger player. She was always one of the first people to congratulate you if you had had a win console you if you had a loss. She had Life Membership bestowed on her in 2001 a very worthy and fitting recipient. In 2015 she was honoured with a special Afternoon Tea to celebrate her 50 years of bowling at RBC. She was presented with her 50 years membership badge, flowers and a gift from the club. At that she spoke of her experiences from the start of her bowling career. How in her very first game she was in the winning team. How she liked to play on our old couch grass green. To use the large heavy wide draw bowl was a challenge no matter the size of your hand but she also loved the new under cover synthetic green and praised the foresight of Neil Barry and the committee men at the time. Pat also played a big part in fundraising to help pay off the debt of the new club house by having a Friday night function once a month and getting her good friends like Kevin Doyle to supply the music for free. These functions were very successful. Pat always spoke highly of her fellow bowlers and what a wonderful club Rockhampton was. Sadly in the last year or so Pat's health didn't allow her to play her beloved bowls but that didn't stop her when well enough, from coming to the club each Wednesday in her uniform and as usual not a hair out of place and her face beautifully made up. Around 2.15 pm you'd see Patsy coming in the side gate on the wheelie walker with Les behind with her fold-up chair and cushion to take upstairs. There was always a little chat to someone along the way before she got to the stairs and with Les' help used the stair lift. The last few months she was able to use the new lift which makes accessing the top level of the club so much easier for anyone with a disability. She would settle herself at the top of the steps and watch the games (or if it was some particular game she wanted to see and was being played up the
other end) she would sit inside and look out the glass doors always knowing who was winning and keeping the score. She was sometimes joined by others who were not playing so there was always company. We will all miss looking up from the green and seeing that familiar sight. Pat would always join us for afternoon tea and enjoyed the company and was always interested as to what was happening at the club and what might be on at another club. Of course she also liked to hear about family, any one sick a new grandchild or a planned holiday or home from one. She was genuinely interested in everyone. Rockhampton Bowls Club has lost part of its history with her passing, but memories will linger on as we recall the special times we shared with her.. Eileen Cavanagh Ladies Secretary Our venue is very popular for members of the community to have a go at bare foot bowling & or other functions. It is also popular with Business Companies & or work Social Groups. Opposite is a photo of our future Physiotherapists from the Central Queensland University Physiotherapy Section. Photo by Vikki Hudson. When I rang Garry Cini (Trend Interiors) to ask him if he would donate and install carpet tiles in front of the lift, he did not hesitate in saying yes. If replacing your carpets, definitely consider Trend Interiors, Garry or Ross Borg will look after you.
Birthdays for July 2018 Best wishers from all of us at RBC. Joy Liddell 03, Norm Diplock 17, Ena Sinclair 21, Kev Weaver 22,(95 years) Doug Simpson 26, Brian Hegarty 30 President`s Noel Roberts Report. I would like to thank Gordon Dobson and Len Harris for helping while Jeff Slater was away and also those who helped on the rinks. The Men`s side of the bowls club is going along real good. We are up there with the leaders in the Pennants and our competitions are going great. The men of the club would like to offer Les Fulwood their condolences on the loss of Pat, his beloved wife. I would like to thank all the members who are selling and buying the football doubles. Looking for the winners of the following dates, 20/4, 27/4 & 8/6 President Noel. President`s Janet Stewart Report. Patricia (Paddy) Fulwood Life Member RBC. Vale Paddy was a great inspiration to me; she gently guided me through some tricky situations at times. I always felt that I could talk to her, to ask for advice which was always clear and practical, or just to clear my mind and that these conversations would go no further a rare thing indeed. I shall miss her greatly as I know others will do so too. My sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers for her family, Les, Margaret and Len. This has been a very busy month and July shows no letup.. I attended two President Days, Gracemere and North Rockhampton both very nice happy days. Patroness Del also attended two Patroness Days, Diggers and Emu Park reporting back that they were also happy friendly days. These days do extend the hand of friendship among clubs
We played at Diggers 6 a Side and did fairly well against stiff opposition. It certainly is a challenge to play on different greens. Friday 29 th is Card Luncheon again the first for this year and by all accounts will be a successful day as usual; of course this cannot happen without our volunteers. Some new faces would be helpful and give everyone a bit of a rest. All meetings attended except CQ (day of Paddy s funeral). It was very pleasing to see so many members attending-to form the Guard of Honour as a mark of respect. President Janet Notes from your Secretary. Travelodge has again sponsored RBC for 5 days of prize money and the champion singles trophy for Very much appreciated. The Capricornian has continued their sponsorship of RBC for 2019 that will now span over 36 years. Our relationship is going from strength to strength and also very much appreciated. Settlers is our newest Sponsor and we also are working with them to form a partnership that will be of great benefit to both parties. Working with Complete Performance Solutions I have made application for a grant for 15 round tables and 150 chairs. To keep pace with technology, Legislative Acts and Policies the Queensland Government is providing workshop courses to keep clubs up to date. RBC will continue to be part of this direction. Welcome back to Jack Robinson after his accident at the club. Photo of two great men, Kev Weaver and Jack Robinson.

The show was a great opportunity to meet other stall holders and many constituents from Capricornia. I even got to try some of the delicious food on offer over the three show days.
