2 Chapter Director s Corner John Read, AZ-S Chapter Director Spring is in the air and a lot of my retired friends are already headed out on road trips. I m still working full time so have to plan that vacation time Good news is that early registration for the Region F un Rally in Albuquerque has been extended until May 15th so sign up on the Region F website, and save some cash versus paying at the door. It is time to also make sure your bike is ready for those extended trips. Go through the T-CLOCS Inspection Checklist included in this newsletter and fix anything needed, you will have a more fun and relaxing trip not worrying about a breakdown or safety related issue. I ve sure been spending my weekends working on my bike and at 30 years old with 97,000 miles on the odometer as little things have been showing up on my daily commutes. It was time to replace all my carburetor slide diaphragms as the rubber was starting to crack and giving my engine some strange air/fuel mixtures to try and digest. Of course might as well put on some chrome caps on top for show. Also I came up with a modification to my new Ignition Computer I found on ebay. I have been burning them up in this desert heat so cut a hole in the top of the cover and glued on a 12 VDC cooling fan. That is probably not a modification you would want to make if you ride in the rain a lot but I had to try something different. I m hoping that it is tucked up high enough under the fake tank it will stay dry through the monsoon season. Another fun job was to replace my clutch line which had developed a leak. It is sure running well now and is a pleasure to ride, still feels like the day it left the showroom floor. Next Wednesday, May 11th, we are headed down to Safford to ride up Mt. Graham. This is a great day trip and will test your machine and riding ability. Come on out for the day, should be a fun one, check out the flyer and make plans to join in. 3 Maryann & Joe Lisenby The Gold Book Hi everyone, Joe and I made it back to Alaska safe and sound... we didn t ride back. We came home to summer, everything is green and the yard had already been mowed for the first time, tulips in full bloom including my Iris and bleeding hearts. Yes I live in South-central Alaska. Climate change, we are dumb founded by it. But, enough of Alaska, I d like to point out just a few items in the Gold Book this month that as members you automatically received each year. Where do you keep your book, I hope it s in a saddlebag or the truck of your bike! It could be a very essential tool on a road trip, either a short or long ride. Have you ever really opened and looked at the book cover to cover? Did you look for your name, did you check to see what series of codes are after your name, the A, B, C, D, E, F? Do you know what they mean and how helpful they can be to your fellow riders and yourself when any type of incident or need happens while in your traveling? If you re thinking of traveling internationally it also gives you listings of members in other nations. Did you know that if you re planning a trip to this year Wing Ding that all or most of the vendors are listed of those that will be attending? Makes it easy to add to that vendor to the shopping list that you may have and easier to find them. Gives you the listing of Honda dealers in the United States and Canada. Gives you vital information on Rescue Plus, plus applications for membership to Rescue Plus and to join GWRRA. There is a section on just motorcycle travel planning features. Gives you wind chill factors, it might be summer when most of us ride but we know mornings are cool in many areas and knowing how to layer for the start of the day is important. How to tie down your gold wing and how to tie down an 1800! There are members who have never tied their bikes down before, it s important to do it correctly. Have you ever dropped your bike, do your need a reminder on how to pick it up; it s in the book! What to do in case of an emergency, many have been trained but under stress do your remember? Joe and I have had out of state members give us a call in Alaska because they were looking for a bed for the night because they were robbed during their travels and money was tight and they still had a long way to go before heading home in the lower 48. We now have a great friendship with another GWRRA member from another state. So, it s getting warm and when you have nothing to do this summer or before that trip to Wing Ding or another short or long trip, make sure you know where your Gold Book is. Sit down and just glance over it and refresh yourself with a few good pointers. And while you re at it, check out those codes next to your name and think about what you have to offer to your fellow GWRRA members. You might want to update your contributions to them. 4 Connie Jo Richtmyre AZ-S Chapter Educator To Trike or Not to Trike Each month I try to impart some rider safety information, tips and practical approaches to the topic that month. Often I relate personal stories, either mine or others to better define the points I am trying to make. Today I want discuss when it might be right to switch to a trike. First, ask yourself the following questions, and be truthful with your answers: Does it hurt your knees, back, hips, (fill in the blank) when you hold up your bike and/or when stopping or starting? Do you worry whether or not you can support the bike, with or without your co-rider when stopping, or parking? Do you worry about bobbling or dropping your bike when slowing down or stopping? Does the thought of stopping and supporting your bike cause you to concern and pain at each stop. Is your bike sitting idle, parked in the garage, because you keep waiting for Some Day when you knees, hips, back, are feeling better or you are strong enough again to support the bike. Are your family members and or riding buddies expressing concerns about your ability to ride? Is your co-rider hesitant to ride with you? Now it s time for the more personal questions. Again answer honestly. Do you feel you are too young to ride a trike? Is riding a trike okay for someone else, but not for you, not yet? Would you rather not ride at all, if it means having to ride a trike? Is your riding image that important to you that you feel you will never ride a trike, even if it means giving up riding for good? Do you miss riding with your friends? Do your riding buddies miss riding with you? I know many of us think that someday, when we are older, a trike will be an option. But that day is a long way away. Why? How many of us believe that a trike must be a last resort, something for our later years? Why? Isn t the reason we joined the GWRRA in the first place that we wanted to ride more places, make more friends, and ride with those friends? If your answer to this question is yes, and you ve answered yes to some of the questions above, then why not say yes to a trike? Yes, trikes are a substantial investment, whether it is converting your existing ride to a trike, purchasing a used trike or buying a new cycle and converting it. However, in today s market, there are many great condition used trikes for sale. Often these are ones of fellow GWRRA members that we know personally and have all ridden along side. Riding, whether two or three wheeled, is ultimately still riding. And isn t riding with our co-rider or alongside our partner or favorite riding buddy what we really want to do? 4

15 Practice Field Days Practice Field Days give all riders, regardless of riding abilities, a chance to practice and increase their riding skills. These multichapter field days give riders an opportunity to ride a variety of maneuvers at their own skill level, to ask questions and to have fun riding. Have trouble getting your Wing on it s center stand? Not sure how to pick it up? This is the place to learn! All riders, all levels are welcome. In keeping with the GWRRA tradition of SAFETY, all riders must wear helmets, long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots and full-finger gloves. See you there! May 15th 7-9 AM Turf Paradise A special thank you to TURF PARADISE, located at 1501 W Bell Road in Phoenix, for allowing us to hold our Practice Field Day ( PFD ) in their parking lot. PFD gives motorcycle riders of all skill levels an opportunity to practice and improve their slowriding, maneuvering skills in a no-pressure, safe environment. 15
