9 Tennessee Walking Horse Country Pleasure Class #36 Country Pleasure spotlights the attributes that are the backbone of the TWH s popularity the smooth and stylish walk in its most basic form combined with a relaxed and willing attitude. Judging parameters include: the overall balance between horse and rider, correct gaits, smoothness and economy of motion (the ability to cover a lot of ground for an extended period of time). In addition, the Country Pleasure horse shall break less than 45 degrees with the knees and lack the lift of the shoulders. The over stride naturally may be shorter in this division, but should never appear trotty or stiff. The head nod must truly be an up and down nod (never side to side), but may lack some of the depth needed in the other divisions. This is a no-canter class. The trail walk may be asked for at the Judges discretion. The Country Pleasure horse must be alert and well-behaved, stand quietly and back readily. Keg shoes only 3/8 X ¾, two hands are allowed with a western bar/shank bit. Cavesons are optional for western, ring snaffles are allowed for any age horse in both English and Western. Neat English or Western attire is required, but not a combination of both. Trail Class with Obstacles: #66 This class is to demonstrate the trail abilities of the saddle horse. A diagram of the course will be available at the show office 30 minutes before the class. The course will be an outdoor class. Horse and rider must complete as many obstacles as possible with a given time limit. The rider may attempt the obstacles in any order and my repeat obstacles. Points are awarded based on each obstacle s level of difficulty. Peruvian/Paso Fino Concurso de Paseo : # 67 The Spanish breed challenge is on. Open to both Peruvian and Paso Fino Horses. This class will consist of both work on the rail in gait and individual workouts for each horse and rider. Workouts may include maneuvers such as circles, serpentines, stop and stand, and backing. Individual workout will include a dismount, leading the horse and then re-mount. Emphasis will be on horsemanship, gait, manners, willingness and teamwork between horse and rider. Icelandic Beer Mug Tolt: #69 All riders are to enter the arena at the walk holding their beer mugs. The announcer will call the gaits as directed by the judge: slow tolt and any tempo tolt. Line up and measure mugs. Winner is the horse and rider with the most beer left in their mug that stayed in tolt. If there are 2 or more riders with the same amount of beer left in their mugs, there will be work off. Bareback (with $10 bill): #74 Participants are given a $10 bill at the gate before entering the class. The winner will receive $10 for every horse that enters this class. 18 THE PASO FINO HORSE You are about to meet one of the most exciting breeds in North America today the PASO FINO. Known for its loyalty, athleticism, spirit, graceful carriage and exceptionally smooth ride, the Paso Fino is the ideal horse for the entire family. So whether you are looking for your first horse, a new addition to your barn, or a way to recapture the joy of riding after time away from the saddle, we invite you to learn more about this unique horse and see for yourself why it s called the Rolls Royce of the horses. AMERICA S 500 YEAR OLD BREED The traits that people cherish in the Paso Fino today have been a part of its heritage for over 500 years. Although the Paso Fino has been bred in Latin America since the days of the Conquistadors, this unique horse was virtually unknown in the United States until the late 1940 s. A mixture of three European breeds the Andalusian, the Barb, and the now extinct Spanish Jennet the descendants of today s Paso Fino were transported to the New World on the second voyage of Christopher Columbus. Used as a foundation stock for remount stations of the Conquistador, they carried their riders for days over mountains, open ranges, and dense jungles, paving the way for exploration and conquest. Over time these horses came to be known as Los Caballos de Paso Fino, the horse with the fine step. GETTING TO KNOW PASO FINOS Today the Paso Fino reflects its Spanish Heritage through its proud carriage, elegance, and natural four-beat gait. When most people first see a Paso Fino, they are impressed by its noble appearance. With its beautifully flowing, luxurious mane and tail, full forelock and athletic balance, it gives an immediate impression of power and grace. Paso Finos are not just beautiful, they are intelligent, affectionate, and built for fun and hard work. Unlike many other breeds, the Paso Fino is seldom shod unless traveling on rocky surfaces. Naturally quick, surefooted and athletic, their hooves are extremely durable. Paso Finos will vary in size from 13.2 to 15.2 hands with the average being slightly over 14 hands. The ideal Paso Fino has a powerful neck with a graceful arch. While the chest is moderate in width, the mid-section is moderate in length with a well-sprung rib cage. The legs of a Paso Fino show well defined tendons and refined bones with longer forearms and shorter cannons than some of the larger breeds. If you like variety, Paso Fino horses can be found in every equine color with or without white markings including bay, black, buckskin, palomino, chestnut, grey, roan and even pinto. Page 18

19 THE PASO FINO GAITS While appearance is an important consideration any horse you buy should be conformationally correct and sound gait is paramount for a Paso Fino. Paso Finos can walk, canter and gallop like other horses, but their preferred way of going is their own natural four-beat lateral gait. The Paso Fino gait will produce a wonderfully smooth ride at the three primary speeds: Classic Fino, Paso Corto, and Paso Largo. During the Classic Fino, the horse holds itself fully collected and balanced. Leg motion is smooth and extravagant, and each hoof hits the ground in rapid succession. Used for show purposes only, it is performed with the same forward impulsion as a slow walk, yet it has a rapid footfall. The Paso Corto is the average trail gait and is comparable in speed to a trot. Forward speed is moderate, ground covering, but unhurried, executed with a medium extension and stride. A well-conditioned horse may travel at the Paso Corto for hours without tiring, and because of the smooth gait, so can the rider. The Paso Largo is the fastest speed, executed with a longer extension, stride, and varying degrees of collection. Forward speed varies, since each horse should attain a top speed in harmony with its own natural stride and cadence. A Paso Fino breeder will have horses who can demonstrate the Paso Fino gait. Remember, the better the gait, the better the ride! FOR THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME Owning a Paso Fino is a special experience. While you and your Paso Fino will be perfectly happy on a quiet trail ride, there are a host of other activities you can enjoy together with your Paso Fino in the show ring, on a competitive trial and endurance ride, at barrel racing, in team penning and roping as well as back at the ranch working cattle. You can enjoy the company of other Paso Fino owners at local, regional and national shows or by joining the Paso Fino Horse Association and its regions. If you would like to show your Paso Fino off to the community, they make ideal parade horses you always know when there s a Paso Fino in a parade by the outburst of applause! Whatever you want out of your horse owning experience the Paso Fino will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment for you and your family. For a first hand look at the beautiful Paso Fino, visit a farm or ranch in your area or contact the Paso Fino Horse Association. Find out where the nearest Paso Fino Show will be held in your area and go talk to the breeders and watch the horses perform. If will be an experience you won t soon forget. Also, remember to check the High Plains region website for upcoming events: highplainspfha.org Page 19

28 HIGH PLAINS PASO FINO ASSOCIATION REGION HISTORY The High Plains Paso Fino Horse Association was organized in the summer of 1998 with 66 members and 210 horses. They were approved by the PFHA Board of Directors at the October 1998 Board of Directors meeting. That was a momentous occasion, because this was one of the few regions to be approved in the near past. The purpose of the formation of this new region was to have a smaller geographical territory with a higher concentration of members so we could be more involved together in the name of our Paso Fino Horses. What has actually happened is that our membership has grown over the years; the miracle age of technology has helped us stay in touch as we continue to grow in membership and our member area grows. Since the first official meeting as an organization on November 21, 1998 our membership has grown to over 160 members. What attributed to this is outstanding members who want to see our region succeed. They volunteer, then volunteer again. The second attribution is striving for consensus and something for everyone. We have concentrated on our membership as Board customers and work to assure they receive benefits. We want congeniality, and everyone to have a voice. We are aware that one of any organizations problems is communication. For that reason we have a bi-monthly newsletter, and a website accessible to members of High Plains and nearby national membership. We encourage farm clinics offering $300/clinic, up to $1000/year to help defray cost of educating our members and the public to our wonderful horses. In addition we provide $75/trail ride to help with the cost of providing fun and community to our members. We have a newly formed youth organization, sponsoring two youth ($1000 each) in the last three years to the Youth Mundial. Some of our activities include the Lawrence Ks Christmas Parade, Beef Empire Days parade in Garden City, July 4 th Parade in Marshfield Mo, (the oldest parade west of the Mississippi), two shows, one in Tulsa, the other in Springfield Mo; two or more trail rides/year, one in Missouri, one in Kansas, and one in Oklahoma. We participate annually in Equi-Fest, Wichita Ks. Our region is blessed with some of the founders of Paso Fino horses in the United States and founders of the breed registry and organization. Our region is also blessed with some of the foundation stock, as well as National Show High Point achievers. We are proud of our farms, our members and our horses. We wish everyone good luck and good riding. Page 28
