1 Edition / 2011 Ki-Lines THE HUM Hello everyone, John & Noelene Unwin, Chris Hatton, Wendi & I visited the lovely town of Huskisson last Sunday to support our Youth of the Year entry, Finnegan Lowe, in contesting our Region Final. Along with us, Finnegan s parents Glen & Donna attended. Finnegan represented us very well and although our judgement may have been biased by one eyed support of Finnegan, we thought he was would be in the place getters. His answers to the two on the spot questions were extremely well structured with clarity, his prepared speech was presented very well. In short, he did us proud. Unfortunately he wasn t in the placings. The speaking portion was won by Lyle Halliday, representing the Bomaderry Lions (4 th from right in photo), the overall winner was Freya Jansens, representing Gerringong Lions (far right in photo). Overall it was a most enjoyable day. Thank you to our Gardening Lions, it was nice to hear our last guest speaker, Ian Yabsley, mention how good the Lions Park looks! Thanks also for the two teams of Lions at last weeks Kiama Markets. Speaking of the Markets, apart from the reports in the local papers, there is not a lot to report. I have called an Extra Ordinary Meeting of our Board for this evening to discuss this item, as well as a number of other items that need our prompt attention. Kiama Rotary President Noel Edgell & I have sought a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce. This meeting will occur this Wednesday night coming, this will allow me to report to you when we discuss and decide our future plans.

2 Mangy Dog Ray Hunt has been gnawing away at the Council s leg regarding a piece of land for our (& Rotary s) storage shed. Council staff met with Ray & I, on site, at a piece of land that looks extremely promising. We ll tell you more later as the proposition becomes clearer. We will have a number of guests this week, including District Governor Warren Woods & his wife Lion Judy, on his official visit to our Club. Prior to our meeting, the Mayor & Kiama Council will be honouring us & DG Warren with a Civic Reception, beginning at 4.30pm at the Council Chambers. DG Warren will also be inducting (providing Board approval), a new Lion, John Macleod into our Lions Club. I look forward to John s induction & involvement in our Club for years to come. Speaking of new Lions John Moore who as been a guest speaker, with his wife, & a guest of myself has completed the necessary paperwork & wishes to join us. I have taken the liberty of introducing John in this KiLines. I will formally introduce John to our Lions at a later date. Well, I thought that after we finished the Kiama Show I may have had an easy run to the finish. However, this hardly seems the case, & this looks like being a fairly hectic week. Just before I close though, Lion Geoff Heinecke has organised our next HAPPY HOUR at the Kiama Surf Club for the 11 th March. As usual it will be a fantastic affair, be there or be square. He was awarded a Teachers Scholarship to teach High School Science and Maths but declined in favour of Accountancy. He obtained work at 17 at the Nowra Dairy Company. At 19 he became Chief Accountant. He worked at the Company in many senior Executive roles for 34 years. Following a merger with Dairy Farmers Ltd., he became Southern NSW Region Accountant. Leaving Dairy Farmers Ltd. he went to Nationwide Rubber as Financial Controller and later as a Director of Finance and Marketing. He was on the NSW Council of the Dairy Industry Association for 22 years, 21 as Secretary, 13 as Treasurer and 1 as State President. He was on the Australian Council of the same organization for 13 years and 1 year as Australian President. He was awarded Life Membership of both the NSW and Australian Associations and is also the recipient of the Jack Scarr Gold Medallion for meritorious service to the Dairy Industry. He was also a member of the NSW Dairy Industry Council for 13 years. On the local scene he has been Vice President of the South Coast Chamber of Manufactures for 4 years and the Shoalhaven Manufactures for 3 years, Director of Shoalhaven Employment and Training for 8 years, Chairman of Shoalhaven Red Cross Calling for 3 years, President of Shoalhaven Community Transport for 3 years and driver and Committee member for 8 years. Honorary Auditor for many local community organizations, Secretary and Selector for the Bomaderry Rugby League Team and was a Justice of the Peace for over 40 years. Warren is married to Judy and they have been blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. His main interests, apart from Lions, are his family and travel.

6 The MYSTERY photo in the last Bulletin was taken by David Robson on a visit to Coleambally. The machine shown, a Bucyrus Erie Class 111 dragline, was one of 4 that were used to dig the Mulwala Irrigation Canal, the largest canal in the southern hemisphere supplying water to over 700,000 hectares in the Murray Irrigation Area. At a top speed of 3kph they were walked from Deniliquin to Darlington Point on the Murrumbidgee River in the 1950s and dug the 41 km Main Canal which supplies water to the Coleambally Irrigation Area. When this task was completed one machine was sold and the other 3 were left in a reserve where they were scavenged for spare parts. In the late 1970s, Coleambally Lions Club became aware that these draglines were to be sold for scrap. The Club decided to purchase one and move it into their Park at the entrance to Coleambally in time for the celebration of the 10 th anniversary of the town in I was elected as PROJECT MANAGER. Having not been started for 20 years and having lost much of the ancillary equipment it was a huge task just to get it started. Then we had to convince landholders along the 25km route that it would be a nice gesture to allow the Lions to cut through their property with as little damage as possible assuring them we could easily repair their fences and convincing the local Council we would not damage any roads in the process. Of course nothing went as smoothly as planned. The worst drama was when it became bogged. A machine weighing just under 100 tons bogged about 2 metres deep, is not a pretty sight. That was a bad, bad week. It is obvious that the Bucyrus made it eventually to the Lions Park and now sits there proudly as a symbol of the engineering and a reminder of the machinery, that made Coleambally the 3 rd largest irrigation area in Australia. RAY HUNT Note from LYNNE Just wanted to add that this project took almost 4 months with them working every day possible. It was cold, it was wet and copious quantities of alcohol were consumed. Also let it be known at the time the project manager was 38 years old and SINGLE! Enough said. LYNNE.

7 Proposals for Membership Lion Gerry McInerney has proposed John Macleod for membership of our club. John has come to Kiama with his wife Krystina from Wilsons Creek in the hinterland above Byron Bay where he had a 20 acre property. He was involved in Landcare, being President of the local group, the Rural Fire Service (though no fires to report!), and the National Party, of which he was a delegate to State Council. John was a member of his local Rotary Club and served a term as its President. Prior to that John was in Western Australia, holding the position of Accounts Manager for WA and SA for Amatil. In an earlier life he had studied Aviation Electronics and whilst single spent time in WA s frontier mining area. There he made lots of money and spent it on a world trip, finishing up back packing through Asia. John s family travelled extensively during his childhood, (his father would finish up as a Colonel in the Australian Army), and lived in most Australian states. He had a stint at Campbelltown High where he played in their Rugby League premiership team, when his father was stationed at Ingleburn. A keen golfer, John has taken up with some local Lions and others as they punish that little white ball and themselves every Tuesday morning. His new golf clubs are still getting acclimatised. John and Krystina have two grown up sons, Stuart and Grant. John has already attended three meetings of our club and it is hoped that he will be inducted during the District Governor s visit. William John Moore (John) Transferred to Kiama in 1971 with ANZ Bank liked the place so much never left! Worked for Railways for 12 years at Bombo Quarry from 1974 since had various career changes including screen printing shirts for the then flourishing Kiama Touch, (at that stage over 1000 players), before attending Tafe & completing Certificate in Commerce. Now semi-retired, spends the days gardening & landscaping as well as the odd lawn mow. Married to Sue Moore (Ashmore) 1974 Sue has worked in retail with various pharmacies in & around the Kiama/ Illawarra between having three sons. Still finds time to work a day or two per week, in between idolising our 4 grandchildren. Children now all grown & flown the coup, has left us time to travel & do charity work. Set up own charity to raise funds for children in Cambodia. Has since travelled to Cambodia over the last 4 years. Has assisted various projects & distributed funds raised. Sporting interest- through Touch Football attained Level 4 Referees Badge & represented NSW Touch at National Championships in Darwin. Refereed around the Illawarra & NSW for 15 years. Enjoy a poorly played round of social golf.

Please read the below news piece on the Lions International site: Thursday, February 24, 2011 From Past International Director Ron Luxton in New Zealand The death toll in the Christchurch earthquake continues to rise and now stands at an official 98 with more than 200 persons still unaccounted for. Rescue teams from USA, Australia, Japan and the UK have now joined the New Zealand Urban Search & Rescue Teams in both rescue and recovery roles. District Governor Raewyn Clearwater and Past District Governor Phillip Lynch have advised that Lions were again deeply involved in aiding and assisting the residents of the city. The focus today has shifted as large water tankers are now delivering fresh, drinking water around the city and residents can fill containers at filling points. Today local Lions have been assisting Civil Defence teams at the various welfare centres set up around the city. There are many hundreds of displaced persons seeking refuge at there welfare centres and Lions are assisting with food and shelter. District Governor Raewyn has this evening called on local lions to volunteer their manpower again tomorrow and they will be used to relive those Civil Defence Members at the welfare centres who are in need of a break. In her call for assistance at the welfare centres DG Raewyn had this to say Today I visited the welfare centre in Burnside and this tragedy has affected us all and is beyond comprehension. In addition Lions have assisted in the processing of evacuees in Wellington at the welfare centre set up to receive those visitors who are leaving Christchurch and trying to return to their homes overseas sometimes with just the clothes they are wearing. As PDG Phillip Lynch points out, this assistance may be required for some considerable time, and assistance from Lions in Districts that adjoin Christchurch may be required.
