3 LSU vs. Western Carolina Notebook - Game No. 1 LSU VS. WESTERN CAROLINA The LSU Tigers open the Nick Saban era and play their first game in the newly expanded Tiger Stadium on Saturday against Western Carolina. The September 2 season-opener ties the earliest starting date for LSU in the school's history (LSU played Texas A&M on September 2 in both 1989 and 1995) and it's the earliest the Tigers have ever played a home game. The Texas A&M games in 1989 and 1995, both of which were losses, came on the road in College Station. SABAN DEBUT The much-anticipated head coaching debut of Nick Saban finally comes on Saturday. Saban, who guided Michigan State to four bowl games in five years with the Spartans, comes to Baton Rouge with a career head coaching record. Saban spent the 1990 season as head coach at Toledo and he led the Rockets to a 9-2 mark and a share of the Mid-American Conference title. Saban will become the first coach since Jerry Stovall in 1980 to begin his LSU tenure with a home game in Tiger Stadium. The previous four LSU head coaches all began their LSU tenures on the road: Gerry DiNardo at Texas A&M in 1995 (33-17 loss), Curley Hallman at Georgia in 1991 (31-10 loss), Mike Archer at Texas A&M in 1987 (17-3 win) and Bill Arnsparger at Florida in 1984 (21-21 tie). Stovall began his LSU tenure in 1980 in a home game against Florida State (0-16 loss). Saban will also look to become the first LSU coach since Archer in 1987 to win his LSU debut (a 17-3 win over Texas A&M in College Station). Saban is 3-2 in season-openers in his career. TIGER STADIUM EXPANSION The expansion to Tiger Stadium is complete and with the addition of 11,600 seats, Death Valley will become the fourthlargest on-campus stadium in the nation with a capacity of 91,600. While there still are several thousand tickets remaining for the season-opener, LSU should break the school's all-time single-game attendance mark on Saturday night. The singlegame mark of 82,390 was set in a win over Washington on Sept. 24, The following is a look at the top five Tiger Stadium crowds: NO. ATTENDANCE OPPONENT RESULTS DATE 1 82,390 Washington W, Sept. 24, ,792 Georgia L, Oct. 3, ,677 Florida W, 28-21Oct. 11, ,583 Florida L, Oct. 7, ,566 Notre Dame L, 24-6 Nov. 15, 1997 LSU IN SEASON-OPENERS LSU will carry a all-time record in season-openers into Saturday's contest vs. Western Carolina, which includes a mark in season-openers in Baton Rouge. The Tigers, winners of four straight season-opening games, beat San Jose State, 29-21, to open the 1999 season. LSU's longest seasonopening winning streak covered 30 games (from ), while the Tigers' longest season-opening losing streak spanned five years ( ). LSU is 7-3 all-time in season-openers that mark the first game of a decade and the Tigers are 1-0 in the first game of century. LSU opened the 1900s with a 70-0 win over Millsaps in Baton Rouge. ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA Western Carolina is a member of the Southern Conference, which competes at the Division I-AAlevel. Located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, Western Carolina has an enrollment of 5,254 and its stadium (E.J. Whitmire) seats 12,000. They are nicknamed the Catamounts. Western Carolina also wears purple and gold. The Catamounts will be playing a Division I opponent for the third straight year - last year the lost at Maryland and in 1998, Duke posted a win over Western Carolina in the season-opener. Saturday's game in Baton Rouge will mark the second time that WCU has traveled to Louisiana for a game. In 1974, Western Carolina dropped a 10-7 decision to Louisiana Tech in Ruston in the first round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. In 1983, WCU posted a school-best mark and reached the I- AA title game where they fell to Southern Illinois, FAULK AND JAMES ON BUTKUS LIST LSU sophomore linebackers Trev Faulk and Bradie James are two of the 70 players from across the country named to the Butkus Award Watch List. The Butkus Award goes to the nation's top linebacker. Faulk, a native of Lafayette, started eight games last year and he was named second team Freshman All-America by the Sporting News after registering 68 tackles, four of which went for losses. Faulk was also a Freshman All-SEC pick by both the league's coaches and the Knoxville News Sentinel. James, a native of West Monroe, also earned Freshman All-SEC honors last year in both polls after picking up 41 tackles and three sacks in 10 games for the Tigers. CLARK, MYERS AND WILLIAMS RECOGNIZED BY LEAGUE'S MEDIA LSU free safety Ryan Clark, split end Jerel Myers and offensive lineman Louis Williams were all named second team Pre-Season All-SEC by a vote of the league's media at SEC Media Days in July. Clark, a junior from Marrero, earned second team All-SEC honors last year after recording a team-best 110 tackles. Myers, from Houston, set an SEC freshman record by catching 64 passes in Myers, who was a member of the Freshman All-SEC team, was also a first team Freshman All-America pick by the Sporting News. Williams, a senior from Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., has become a mainstay on the Tiger line for the last three years. He'll be making his 23 straight start when the Tigers take the field on Saturday. ABRAM BOOTY AND JARVIS GREEN TOPS AMONG ACTIVE SEC PLAYERS LSU senior split end Abram Booty enters the 2000 season as the SEC's leading active receiver in terms of both receptions and yardage. Booty's 115 receptions are four better than Jermale Kelly of South Carolina and his 1,703 receiving yards are nearly 200 ahead of Kelly. Defensively, junior defensive end Jarvis Green is tied with Florida's Alex Brown with 15 sacks. Jamie Winborn of Vanderbilt is next with 13.5 sacks. Other LSU players on the active career leaders list in the SEC include Josh Booty in passing yardage (8th with 1,830) and completions (7th with 162) and Jerel Myers is ninth in both receptions (64) and receiving yardage (854).
4 WILLIAMS LOOKS TO EXTEND STARTING STREAK LSU senior offensive guard Louis Williams is scheduled to make his 23rd straight start on Saturday night. Williams, who has been in the Tiger starting lineup since the 1998 seson-opener against Arkansas State, has the longest current starting string of any LSU player.
