1 ethos vbc newsletter Love God. Love Others. Love Volleyball. FEBRUARY Black wins 1 st tournament of the year in 14 Club New Season, New Tournaments, New Facility As a club committed to improve in all areas of the game, we have tried some new things this season the largest of which being the leasing of a warehouse. You may have also noticed a distinct change in the tournaments we are attending (no more A-town Showdown) and conscious shift to a more athletic, free flowing practice structure. If you are a returner, I m sure you can tell the difference and I hope you appreciate the effort to improve. Ethos continues to set new bench marks for excellence each year! Our North branch grew by over 4 teams, doubled the youth program and now has 4 teams competing in the Power division. Our Boys program now has 12 members and the 15Elite team continues to make strides in nationally recognized events. We love the process of improvement and are glad you are a part of the Ethos Family Tournament Accomplishments January & February TOURNAMENT TEAM FINISH DIVISION COACH(ES) Southern Dream 15 Elite 2 nd 15 Power Helton & Jarrett MLK Kickoff Classic 13 Black Champions 14 Club Chew Club West Classic 12 Black 3 rd 12 Club Bouchard MAVA Club 16 Boys Tied 5 th 16 Boys Miller, Caher, Harman Smokies 17 Black Tied 3 rd 17 Power Doscher & Pruitt Madness in the Mtns 14 Boys Champions 14 Boys Miller, Caher, Harman Madness in the Mtns 18 Boys 2 nd 18 Boys Miller, Caher, Harman Club Clash I 121 North Champions* 12 Club Pennington MAVA Club Challenge 13 Black 2 nd 13 Club Chew MAVA Club Challenge 13 North 4 th 13 Club King MAVA Club Challenge 15 Green 4 th 15 Club Hasse First Lady s Day 14 Boys 2 nd 14 Boys Miller, Caher, Harman Far Out Festival 121 North Champions* 12 Club Pennington Kudzu Klassik 18 Boys 3 rd 18 Boys Miller, Caher, Harman * = indicates team went undefeated all tournament

3 Power League - Results After a great first season, the Ethos Power League is back in full swing this season with some spirited inter-club matches. I personally like to refer to it as a good sibling rivalry but whatever term is used it seemed like everyone had a good time at the first 2 power leagues and are looking forward to the final one this Saturday. If you don t understand the format, here s a quick rundown: Each PL weekend the pools are determined by the finish of the previous competition. Play well and you move up, play poorly and you move down. Top 10 teams each weekend get a numbered Bag Tag (see picture) with hopes of inspiring them to move up at the subsequent PL weekend. So if you see a player with a Bag Tag, please congratulate them on a great PL performance because with over 33 teams, it s great to be in the top 10. 4 Ethos Pins explained You may have noticed some new pins adorning our players backpacks. These pins represent success both individually and as a team. Below you will find an explanation for each pin: Black Jersey Pin represents hours of high intense practice, effort and sweat. After each practice & tournament, our players vote for the player they felt put forth the most effort that day. At the end of the month, the votes are tallied and the winner gets to wear the black jersey for the following month and gets this Silver Star for their backpack. Full Season Black Jersey Vote Winner pin represents the cumulative total of all the hours of hours of intense practice and effort that goes on throughout a season. At the end of the vote season, all of a team s Black Jersey votes (see definition above) get tallied and the winner gets this coveted pin. Only 1 player on each team can win this award, so it is a huge honor. Tournament Winner pin goes to all members of an Ethos team who place 1 st in a tournament (that s absolute 1 st, not 1 st in Silver division). If you have been to many tournaments, you will know this is quite an accomplishment considering the high level of competition in youth volleyball these days. Pins are for 1 st place finishes only sorry, no pins for 2 nd or Bronze winners. Iron Man Award pin represents complete & utter commitment to Ethos and your teammates for a season. To receive this pin, a player must participate in ALL the practices & tournaments throughout the year - even 1 missed practice will disqualify a player for this pin. This is by far the hardest pin to win at Ethos and is a reward for perseverance. Anchor Pin represents those original members (players & coaches) who set sail with Ethos VBC that inaugural season. As a new club, these players and coaches took a big chance on us and we want to give them the honor they deserve. Thanks for anchoring us down that first season you will always be a part of the original Ethos family.
5 Ethos has a Facility in Nashville Home sweet Home If you haven t heard, Ethos leased an empty warehouse this year and turned it into a 2 court volleyball facility. Needless to say, it took thousands of dollars and man-hours but the results are pretty great! It has allowed our kids to have a true place to call their own. Hopefully it will exist for years to come. Obviously we couldn t have done it without the efforts of many coaches, players and parents who volunteered their time to help build it. A very SPECIAL thanks goes, however, goes out to Chris Pruitt for his hundreds of hours building this facility wiring lights, hanging & sanding drywall, building frames, driving lifts, etc. He basically built this place!!! 6 Build-out - Day 24 Build-out - Day 6 Note from a Director Troy Helton Over the past 10 years coaching the sport, I ve seen some incredible things. I ve gotten to see Destinee Hooker (best female hitter in the world) play live while in College, I ve seen the NCAA Championship game in Louisville last year and I ve had the benefit of attending coaching clinics from some of the top coaches in the Nation. The more I learn about the sports, the more I realize that success comes from a combination of only really 3 things: coaching, effort and the amount of time invested. Too many players (and sadly some coaches) think that there are people who are just naturally gifted or super athletes people who learn faster than others or who just get it. Nothing really could be further from the truth. Being great at anything in life (esp. volleyball) is simply a function of your effort and time. what waiting on your Coach looks like As we head into the final months of the year and the summer, please take the opportunity to ask yourself: Am I giving 100% at every practice and in every drill to get better? Am I studying film, watching YouTube volleyball matches and working out on my off days? Am I completely devoted to eating healthy, getting enough water & rest at night? If the answer to all these questions is not a resounding YES then maybe it s time to step it up. Trust me, there are kids out there putting in 12-15hrs a week in the gym and who are 100% committed to greatness. Website: FB: ethosvbc
