Commodore s Comments By Toni Hughes, Commodore newsletter contributions to newsletter@magothy sailing.com Deadline for next issue: Friday, September 25, 2009 Sailor and boaters spend time and money outfitting their vessel with the latest and greatest gear. Did you know we also spend considerable time and money on the perfect shoes for boating? Boat shoes need to grip, stand getting wet occasionally and not be too ugly! Look at the attire on your competitors they may be able to grip better! Did you know the i-phone has several apps for sailing? (Did you care?) You can navigate, chart your course, and of course call or text a friend all while running around! Many Thanks are in order for Wes and Sheryl McNair and Myron and Sigrid Dorf for hosting the annual picnic at Milbur. The weekend weather from Bill held off until everyone had enjoyed the food. Fall brings more sailing events and our indoor membership meetings. Keep in mind your sailing club needs your time and talent. If the nominating committee contacts you please consider volunteering to support this worthy group! Administrative special request: Please keep all MRSA attachments in the good ole.doc WORD format rather than the newer.docx format. Many of our members can not translate from docx. Thanks. Sailing, sailing, over the bounding main. For many a stormy wind shall blow E'er Jack comes home again. - Traditional Nursery Rhyme Page 1

The cruise for September 26 and 27 September will be to Church Creek on the north shore of the South River and the new home for Fantastic. Plan to arrive by 1700 hours to enjoy happy hour ashore at the Wilelinor Community beachfront. Bring your favorite hors d oeuvre to share. In case of inclement weather, happy hour will be in the community pavilion adjacent to the marina and beach area. Sunday morning, Rich and Toni Hughes will host an omelet brunch and open house at their home. If you can t come by boat, plan to arrive by land yacht and enjoy a weekend on the South River. Local Knowledge for Church Creek on the South River: Once you enter the South River continue to day marker Red 14. The entrance to Church Creek will be at a heading of 340 from R14. Begin a sweeping right turn toward the speed marker at the entrance to the creek. You should be in feet of water. As you approach the speed marker, the better water is to the right side. Once inside the marker, stay to the center of the creek. You will see a community pier on the right. Continue up the creek. On the right side just beyond the second pier you will see a wooden bulkhead. Be sure that you are at least two boat lengths off the bulkhead. Beyond the bulkhead on the left will be a speed marker on the left side, along the shore with marsh grass behind the marker. There is a shoal extending two to three boat lengths from the speed marker. Beyond the speed marker continue in the center of the creek. Looking ahead, you will see a house with bright yellow awnings. The community marina is on the point to the right of the house with the yellow awnings. Off the point, the creek narrows past a speed marker on a pilling. Anchor in the creek before the speed marker. There are pilings about 20 yards off the shore in front of the community area. The floating dingy dock is inside the pilings. Directions by land yacht to the Church Creek Cruise. Take Ritchie Highway south to Route 50 West. Follow Route 50 west to the exit for Aris Allen Boulevard (Route 665). Exit Route 665 at Solomon s Island Road (Route 2). From the exit ramp continue straight across route 2 into the community of Wilelinor. As you are facing Christ Church, turn right. Proceed to the stop sign. Turn left on to Wilelinor Drive. Follow Wilelinor Drive until it curves to the left. As Wilelinor Drive turns to the right continue onto Carvel Circle. The tan house with red shutters on the left (11 Carvel Circle) is the Hughes. Park at the Hughes house and walk down Wilelinor Drive to the end (one long block) to reach the marina. Long Cruise Around DELMARVA, Sep 26 Oct 3 By Walt Burmeister You KNOW you have always wanted to do it, so now is your opportunity! Contact Walt Burmeister at wburmeister@comcast.net or if you would like to crew on Papillon (or your own boat!) for a nice long fall cruise around the DELMARVA Peninsula. Start at the Magothy, then up the Chesapeake Bay through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal to the Delaware Bay. Then traverse out to the Beautiful Blue Atlantic and back into the Chesapeake between Cape Henry and Cape Charles. Then a nice trip north to home and a hot shower! Such a deal! Walt has been planning this trip for years and has some great anchorages picked out along the way. Give him a call even if you are a tentative maybe. Do the whole Bay hey hey hey!!! Page 2

The October meeting will be at Bella Napoli restaurant in Pasadena, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program will feature Bob Stevenson, who is an Annapolis Maritime Museum and U. S. Lighthouse Society Volunteer. Bob has a (Really Neat!) new slide show on the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, a "virtual tour" of the lighthouse that includes things not seen even during the museumsponsored tours aboard the lighthouse. If you haven t noticed, much progress is being made to restore and preserve the lighthouse. Pizza will be on the menu for all to enjoy. Bella Napoli is located in the Mountain Market Place Shopping Center at 350 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD Joke Cruise to Worton Creek, Saturday October 3-4 By Ed Poe The cruising set wants YOU to join them for a judiciously jocular and joyful joke journey. Contact Peggy and Ed Poe at mpoe1@comcast.net or if you will be cruising. Bring your best jokes. PRIZES! Tall-Tales of Past Cruises and Events Pirates Cruise Rock Hall, Aug 8-9 By Captain Magothy Mike Bonham The MRSA (Magothy River Swashbuckler s Association) invaded Rock Hall s Pirates Fantasy Weekend, Aug 8 th - 9th in full pirate gear with tattoos to prove it. A great time was had by all who attended and took part in a town-wide pirate party. The MRSA crew members of Frequent Flyer, Renaissance, Fantastic, Light Spray, Flying Low and Dawn Trader (sea dogs from EYC) took part in the town s festivities which included a beach party, live music, grub and grog, dingy race, pirate watching, and some of our crew members even learned to play the steel drums. There was little pillage and plundering unless you were grog or a covered dish at the happy hour graciously hosted by Renaissance. If you think pirates arrrrrgh dead, all you need to do is talk to one of the brave ships that attended, and they will attest to the fact the pirates arrrrrgh is alive and well in Rock Hall at least once a year. 5 More Tall-Tales of Past Cruises and Events August Picnic By Wes McNair Proud Grandmother Kathy Polk with Granddaughter April; April with her brother Chase and The Old Dog. [When you are the Editor, you get to show off your own family. Ed] Despite an ominous forecast, the annual MRSA August Picnic got underway and was successfully completed, with a great turnout to boot. With a 1:00 pm start, all hands and guests got warmed up, cooled off, and fully fed before the thunders began to rumble about 4:00 pm. Mil-Bur community pool was once again the setting for a fine event. Thanks go to Myron and Sigi Dorf for making the arrangements, helping with setup and takedown, and all in between. Thanks also to Mil-Bur neighbor Tom Poturalski, who so graciously made a large tented enclosure available for our use. About 51 people came out to enjoy the pool, games, burgers and dogs, a wide array of sides and desserts brought by attendees, and a boatload of beer and soda. Dave Kemp and an extended Polk clan led by Bert & Kathy managed to hold up the cruising part of the club, arriving by boat. The rest of us played it safe by Land Cruisers. All in all, great people, great picnic. Walt Burmeister and Sheryl McNair concentrate on a fierce game of Sandbags while burgers and dogs smoke in the background. Page 5

Parade of Lights Boat(s) Needed for December 2009 By the Board of Governors This is the fifth broad brush announcement on this subject. Please respond to any member of the Board if you have an interest in providing safe passage for this very grand affair. Having a boat in the parade is a great way to get to know your fellow MRSA members and a really fun ride in the parade. MRSA has been very successful in its participation in the Eastport Yacht Club Parade of Lights Boat Parade in Annapolis for several years. We have kept all of the decorations since the last time that we had an entry in the parade on the possibility that the club would have an entry in the future. The BOG would now like to find out if there is sufficient interest from the club to participate, making it worthwhile to continue to store all the decorations. The club has made a significant investment in both time and expense to make the items that we have used. However, if there is not sufficient interest from the club to continue participating in the near future, it is not necessary to store the items from past parade. The success that MRSA experienced in the past resulted from the Gardners and Seals leading the efforts. If you would be interested in leading the effort to participate or provide a boat to use in the parade, please express your interest by sending an to the Commodore Toni Hughes at Commodore@magothysailing.com. Classified Advertisements From time to time it has been customary to have classified ads in The Old Man to allow members to make nautical articles (little pun there) available within the membership. Please respond directly to the seller if you are interested in the items listed. 13' Boston Whaler Sport Like new! Only 40 hours on high performance 40 HP, 4-stroke engine. Junior Sailing Program By Rich Hughes, MRSA Fleet Captain Junior Training A Great Year for MRSA Junior Training The Magothy River Sailing Association continues to conduct an outstanding Junior Training Program at the Grachur Club property on the beautiful Magothy River in Pasadena, Maryland. This year s camp again enrolled forty students, from June 15 to 26. I would like to recognize the outstanding staff of instructors led by Andy Kirkendall. Returning instructors included Andrew Allison and Nick Manuzak. Three new instructors joined the staff James Dougan, Mary Kate Hostomsky, and Dale Strong. The instructors were assisted by Counselor-in-training Sam Pershall, David Seavey and Josh Prucnal. This staff of instructors did a superb job. This year we had some unusual conditions to deal with and our instructors did a great job of meeting the challenges. The first challenge occurred on the first day of camp when we had to move about half of the fleet onto the beach from the dock area. Our CITs did a great job of moving the boats while the students were taking their swim tests and conducting the man-overboard training. The other challenge occurred throughout the first week when we experienced several days of bad weather that prevented the students from sailing. The instructors were very creative in developing activities to keep the students challenged. In addition to several days of bad weather, we also experienced unusually high tides that left little or no beach to launch and recover the boats. The students and the instructors did a great job in conducting launch and recovery operations in a very save manner. The weather was much better the second week of camp and the students did a lot of sailing to include one day of racing and the point to point sail to Cape Arthur for a picnic and beach party. Many thanks to The Forsyth s for sponsoring our trip to Cape Arthur. On Friday, June 25 th, we moved all the boats back to the McNair property and stored the fleet and then had a great Awards Party in the McNair s backyard. Here are some demographics for this year s camp. The students are from 28 families that are members of MRSA, The Grachur Club, or unaffiliated. Twenty students are from MRSA families, 15 are from Grachur Club families, two students are from families that are members of both organizations and three students are not affiliated with either organization. We had 13 new students and 27 returning students; 26 are young men and 14 are young ladies. The ages for the students are: ages 9 (5 students); ages 10 (2 students); ages 11 (7 students); ages 12 (7 students); ages 13 (7 students); ages 14 (6 students); ages 15 (2 students); ages 16 (2 students). Junior Training Program Ranks, from lowest to highest are: Seaman III, Seaman II, Seaman I, Mate III, Mate II, Mate I, and Skipper. During the awards ceremony the students were recognized for the following achievements congratulations to all!! Alex Andrew, Seaman III; Ben Andrew, Seaman I; Jake Andrew, Mate I; Jamey Boezi, Seaman III; Will Boezi, Seaman III; Luke Councell, Seaman II; Graham Dougan, Mate I; Kyle Dougan, Mate I; Matthew Dougan, Mate I; Andrew Forsyth, Seaman II; Caroline Forsyth, Seaman II; Ryan Forsyth, Mate II; Adam Harrison, Seaman III; Jane Hostomsky, Mate I; Kate Johnson, Seaman III; Sam Johnson, Seaman III; Brendan Jones, Seaman III; Chris Kemp, Skipper; Erin Kemp, Mate I; Lewis Mackenzie, Skipper; Mark Muckelbauer, Mate II; Daniel Polin, Skipper; Andrew Province, Seaman III; Jordan Prucnal, Mate II; Rachel Prucnal, Seaman I; Kyle Reed, Seaman III; Sharlene Roberts, Seaman II; Madeline Seavey, Seaman I; Brady Smith, Seaman II; Rachel Smith, Seaman I; Kimberly Stringer, Seaman III; Matthew Stringer, Seaman II; Grace Tierney, Mate II; Meaghan Tierney, Seaman III; Sydney Tracey, Mate II; Zach Watkins, Seaman I; Cedar Williams, Seaman III; Bradford Wilson, Seaman II; Chase Wood, Skipper; Taylor Wood, Mate II.
