The World s First Corvette Club The President s Corner - Jim Parisi June 2014 First, I would like to keep in our prayers all the members who have recently had surgery and health care issues, Frank Merendino, Don Haller, Tommy Armstrong, and Jim Wade. We all hope for your quick and healthy recovery. This weekend, June 6-8, is the weekend for the Hospice Buddy Camp. Elisa Merendino and I will be attending. I look forward to spending the weekend with our little buddies for some good fun and positive reinforcement for their losses. I will not be able to have computer or phone this weekend so I hope you all can reach me Sunday evening for all communications. Our 41 st Annual Car Show, The Return of the Stingray, went off perfectly at Sport Chevrolet with great weather and a great group of people. All GM vehicles were welcome and there was a special section designated for our Wounded Warriors! I would like to say thank you to all that participated in the club, Nita Armstrong was outstanding along with Lee Shirley and all that came both days for Sport, moving cars and doing everything that needed to be done. This was a club effort from many people and the responses from all were very good. Again, thank you all! Treasured Motorcar Services, LTD brought two cars to our show. They brought a 57 fulie, black with red interior. It is a beautiful car. They also brought a Pratt & Miller built 2006 Z06 pure race car. It was a very special showing. They also specialize in restoration of European cars as well. Alan Curtis is the general manager and available at your request at Smokey D s was back with their great BBQ and Adam s demoed their products on cars all afternoon. Congratulations to all the winners and hope to see you all back next year!

June 2014 Page 2 We have Joe and Angie's pool bash coming up July 19 th. It should be a great, wet day in the pool. I hope the weather is fantastic! See the flyer later in this issue. We also had a great find by our Membership Director, Jean Wade, from Bill Diely who was a former member back in the `60 s. He gave the club some great historical information to be restored and revitalized. See Jon Thorn s article this month for more information on this. The summer is off to a great start and I hope every one has a safe and fun time. Pictures from Sebring My car on the track. Pictures of my next car I hope! 4 June 2014 Page 4 The Editor s Corner Jon Thorn Corvette ramblings I wonder what has happened to all this free time that you are supposed to have in retirement. It does not seem to be working out that way. There is no real complaint here because the time is mostly taken up with fun things but there is very little real relax time. At the end of May, Evelyn and I spent a little over a couple of weeks on a river cruise through Western Europe starting out in Amsterdam and ending up in Zurich after a little time on a bus. We had one day back home before the 41 st Annual Car Show and the week since then has been pretty much non-stop as well. I do have some good news to report. Jean Wade received an from Bill Deily saying that he had some old CCA documents that he wondered if we wanted. He and his wife were members back in the early 70 s and his wife was the club secretary for a period around I contacted Bill and found out that he was planning to move to Arizona in a week and needed to get the binders and some old Courier newsletters to us in a hurry. I found out that he lived in Mechanicsville, MD and I offered to drive down to meet him. I picked up the materials from him and I ve started going through them. He believed that the earliest documents were from 1962 but I discovered the minutes from the very first meeting on July 17 th, Needless to say, this is a significant historical find for the club. It is going to take awhile to go through all the documents. I think when everything is looked at that we will have a much better picture of the early years of the club and some of the challenges that they faced. Many of the documents are not in great shape. I plan to digitally scan everything to add to the library of important documents that we started last year. From what little I have seen so far I think we will have a fascinating story for generations of future club members. As I am sure you know, next month is July and that makes it the 58 th anniversary of the club. I hope to have an initial article on these documents ready in time for the July issue of the Courier. It is clear from the minutes of the July 17 th meeting that a lot of discussion had occurred before this initial organizational meeting. It is also clear that there are some mysteries in the club s past. There are gaps in the record that may be a result of lost documents or due to club inactivity. The early road for the founders was clearly not a smooth one. What I have seen for certain already is that the club from the very beginnings had a close relationship with GM and both provided influence to GM and was influenced by GM. If you have an interest in history this should turn out to be a lot of fun to look through. I may be over estimating the value but I think this collection is the CCA equivalent of finding the Dead Sea Scrolls. In other news, it is hard to believe that you might not be aware of this, but this coming weekend is the 91 st anniversary of the first running of the 24-Hours of Le Mans. Unlike some of the TUDOR events this one is fully covered on TV by Fox. If you would like to watch or just set your DVR s here is the schedule for the event coverage: (Saturday, June 14-Sunday, June 15 - all times ET) 8:30 a.m-4 p.m., Saturday, June 14 (FOX Sports 1) 4-5 p.m., Saturday, June 14 (FOX Sports 2) 5-6:30 p.m., Saturday, June 14 (FOX Sports GO) 6:30 p.m., Saturday, June 14-1 a.m., Sunday, June 15 (FOX Sports 2) 1-7:30 a.m., Sunday, June 15 (FOX Sports 1) 7:30-9:30 a.m., Sunday, June 15 (FOX Sports 2) You will also find updates and some live coverage over the IMSA.com website. In addition there is also

June 2014 Page 5 the excellent broadcast audio coverage from radiolemans.com. It is going to be a big weekend for Corvette and they could use your fan support. You probably also heard the news that Corvette announced the performance numbers for the LT4 engine at 650 HP and 650 TQ. That is pretty amazing and a substantial jump over the earlier estimates. If you want early access to club chatter like the above you really should join the closed CCA group on Facebook. We only have a small fraction of the members in this group but there is a ton of good information available. Consider joining the group today! Just do a search of Corvette Club of America and request to be admitted to the group. I m going to close out with a picture of the whole Corvette Racing Team at the Place de la République, in downtown Le Mans. It is hard to believe it has been 15 years for Corvette Racing. Unfortunately it was a wet day there this afternoon. GO JAKE! Jon Thorn, CCA Courier Editor

June 2014 Page 6 Competition Chair Stephen Catlin Corvette Competition Competition Report Unfortunately, we have completed our spring CCA autocross events and our fall CCA autocross events are not until September and October. However, there are still many things to keep competitive club members busy throughout the upcoming summer. For those interested in track day events, there were several fun events in May and several more coming up in June, including Chin s VIR track days on 6/25-6/26, BSR s Summit Point Jefferson Circuit track day on 6/28, and NCM s VIR track days on 6/30-7/1. Can t believe I ve had my C6 Z06 for over a year and still haven t made it to a track day. I m hoping to make the BSR event using my current LS7 setup, but unfortunately will be holding off on VIR until I get new LS7 heads worked up and installed. Hope to see you track guys soon... Besides the numerous track day events continuing throughout the summer and various social events on the calendar, let us not forget that this is the first year for the Dick Thompson Award and that points can be accrued by CCA club members at any NCCC competitive event! Full details and Flyers for upcoming points-paying NCCC events can be found on the NCCC East Region Event-List Website linked below. In order to encourage some summer road trips, I will highlight some of the upcoming NCCC East Region competitive NCCC autocross events that CCA club members should consider attending. I will be at the first two, and likely others as well throughout the summer, and will of course be attending our fall CCA events. Hop on board and consider attending...maybe we can get a summer traveling caravan of CCA autocrossers. Events outside of the CCA are opportunities to meet and socialize with fellow Corvette owners from other clubs, encourage other club members to likewise attend our club events to grow our participant base, to get more seat time in our Vettes, and if nothing else to get away from DC for the weekend! As at our last event, for those who ask (while my personal supply lasts) I will being handing out free small CCA decals to club participants (perfect for the B-pillar or rear window glass) at any event I attend. These can help advertise our club and show our CCA pride and attendance. Remember we are the first and oldest Corvette Club! Here is a report on the Chin Motorsports Watkins Glen HPDE on May 19 th and 20 th from Pat Roney. CHIN MOTORSPORTS AT WATKINS GLEN MAY 19 & 20, 2014 The Corvette Club of America was represented by 6 members for the Chin Motorsports HPDE at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Gary N., Bob C., John & Diane D., Art B. and myself made the 5 hour trip to The Glen and were rewarded with some nice weather, and a little rain, and a lot of great laps on this historic track. As you can see from the photo below, we were in good company.

June 2014 Page 8 Bob C. climbing into Leona for a ride with Gary N. (holding the door) in the Advanced group. Bob C., John D. & myself lined up to go out on track. Gary N. had a talk with me about putting my big boy pants on before going out on track that helped me keep up with these faster buddies.

June 2014 Page 9 Bob C. changing brake pads between sessions with lots of supervision from Gary N. & John D. Notice John s neat portable lift under Bob s car. John s lift is a big hit where ever we go. Another happy participant enjoying the use of John s lift.

June 2014 Page 11 The only picture I have managed to get of the elusive Art B. in all of the events we have been to together. Thanks to Diane D. for the photos. There is a lot more action coming up so if you are interested, please come talk to myself or one of our group and see how High Performance Driver Education could fit into your plans. Please remember to keep it at the speed limit on the highway and do your high speed driving on the track. I hope to see you soon. Pat Roney Until next month... 17 June 2014 Page 17 Corvette Club of America 41 st Annual Car Show We were blessed with fantastic weather this year for the annual car show and that resulted in great attendance from both registrants and spectators. It will be a few more days yet before we have the details but it appears to have been a very successful show. We have hundreds of photos from the event and it won t be possible to show them all here but I wanted to include a few from the show in this issue of the newsletter because it is a major event for the club and so many people worked so hard to make it successful. For the past couple of years we have had an All GM show along with the Corvettes and the quantity and quality of the GM entries continues to grow. The cars vary from almost identical to what came off the assembly line to highly modified cars.

Trust Tony, of Tony s Corvettes to show up with something really special - a tanker fuelie. This highly modified C6 had a paint job that you had to be able to stand right next to in order to fully appreciate it! We had several C7 s on display in addition to a large number of C5 s and C6 s.

June 2014 Page 25 The Corvette Club of America is proud to be exclusively associated with Sport Chevrolet. Be a Sport fan too!! 3101 Automobile Blvd Silver Spring, Md Our contact at Sport Chevrolet for a new or used car is Lee Shirley, or him at lshirley@sportautomotive.com. Be sure to let Lee know that you are a CCA member. The Corvette Club of America, Inc was founded by John Ralph and Charles Eyre who organized the first club meeting on July 17, 1956 at a Chevrolet dealership in Arlington, Virginia. At that time the club charter was formulated and a tentative club name, Capital Corvette Club was considered. At a subsequent meeting in September 1956, however, the club name was changed to the Corvette Club of America since it was the intent of the members to make the club a national organization. In the months that followed, the Corvette Club of America took the first steps toward forming a national organization by laying the ground work for the National Council of Corvette Clubs, a group which now includes 275 clubs with more than 17,500 members. Today the NCCC is the largest non-profit, all volunteer Corvette organization in the United States. The Corvette Club of America is a proud member of the East Region of the NCCC. As one of the founding clubs of the National Council of Corvette Clubs, the CCA is honored to have been assigned club number 1 in the organization. Through the years the CCA has seen many fine members come and go; however, one thing remains unchanged. The membership is composed of individuals both male and female, young and old, that share a common interest - The Corvette!
