Corvette Courier The World s First Corvette Club Celebrating our 61 st Anniversary Year President - Bob Atwell May 2017 Corvette Club of America 44 th Annual Spring Car Show June 4 th Car Show...Car Show...Car Show!!! The time is closing in on our 44 th Annual Spring Car Show!! This show is always a great time for those that show their cars, whether it be a Corvette or other General Motors products, Car or Truck!! This is one of those times in life that "The More The Merrier" is very true. Sport Chevrolet has always been very good to us and this is no exception. They give us support by supplying CCA with Fliers, Posters, Show T shirts, letting the CCA take over their show room and we move a large amount of their inventory out of the way on Saturday the 3 rd and move it back on Sunday after the show. What "WE" CCA need from you, the membership, is HELP!! It takes a lot of man and woman power to put on a fun and successful show. We need Cars, help with registration, help with the front gate collecting money, and making sure that everyone signs the Insurance Release Form as well as many other positions. If You can help, please contact Nita Armstrong or myself. If you need more Fliers or Posters, I have them, so get in touch with me! If you have an idea of how to promote our Car Show contact me and I will do all I can to help you. We had our first Autocross April 23 rd at Lincoln Technical College which was FANtastic!! 7 runs in the morning and 7 in the afternoon. It doesn't get much better than that. Thanks to all that helped!! And a Big Thanks to Steve Catlin for once again putting together a fun and challenging course. May 21 st is our next Autocross at LTC. Remember to "Preregister" for this event. When you "Preregister" you not only save money but you enable the people running the events - Think Car Show as well as AX - to anticipate attendance. Give it a try! The new web site makes it easier than ever.

May 2017 Page 5 Editor Jon Thorn Corvette ramblings If you have not noticed, winter is over and things are getting really busy for the CCA. In fact there is more going on than we have time and space to cover in the newsletter. Once our monthly newsletter gets above 40 pages I have to start looking for ways to shorten it. I am going to limit my Ramblings this month to an important area for the club that does not always get a lot of coverage. That is charitable activities and what we can do to give back to the community. First I would like to highlight two events from this past month. CCA members attended an annual luncheon at UMD recognizing the club for the endowment we have which helps support a student in the Clark School of Mechanical Engineering. In the left photo below the student receiving the scholarship in the center is flanked on the left by members April and Paul and on the right by Jean and Bob. The right hand photo shows Angie and Jean (on the left) attending the Hospice Caring, Inc. Raise your Glass Wine Tasting. Our list of supported charities is on the website at I would like to take a little space here to provide some publicity for a local charity that is not on our list. Shenandoah Wheels for Work is a non-profit that helps Shenandoah Valley families who are in need of a car or car repairs in order to get to work. I have exchanged several messages and phone calls with Greg Shields, the founder, and I am very impressed with the work he is doing. Along with Shenandoah Wheels for Work he has a 501(c)(3) foundation, Valiant Virginians, which serves as the fund raising arm. The CCA has a full plate of organizations that we directly support and we really are not in a position to take on more at this time but I want to make you aware of what Greg is doing with the hope that you might be able to help if you can. Many people in the Shenandoah Valley have been really hurt in the current economy. They need transportation in order to work or even get groceries. What makes Greg s program so interesting to me is that beneficiaries are expected to work. They do not get a handout. They get a helping hand. As you will see on the next page, he is running a Corvette raffle to raise money. This a difficult thing to do and success depends on spreading the word. If he is not able to sell all 2500 tickets, the raffle will become a rather than having the Corvette for the prize. I really encourage you to look into this more and help if you can. Here are some links with more information: Shenandoah Wheels for Work: Valiant Virginians: Rules for the raffle: Eligibility for a gifted car: Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Spread the word of the raffle if you can. Better yet, buy a ticket or two! You could get lucky and I am convinced you will be helping a good cause.

May 2017 Page 7 Competition Director - Stephen Catlin Corvette Competition Competition Report - April 2017 CCA Autocross Test and Tune April 23, 2017 We held our 1 st autocross event of the year on Sunday, April 23 rd at Lincoln College. Although setup day on Saturday was a wet mess, the weatherman s weeklong forecast of more of the same Sunday was wrong and filled with nothing but sunshine! For those who missed this test and tune you missed a great event that culminated in several firsts for the Corvette Club of America. The first first was the successful Test and Tune format that was a cross between CCA s prior Saturday autocross school (with classroom and plenty of hands on informal practice) and our normal Sunday timed official events. The second first was giving our 25 or so AM and/or PM drivers 7 runs in the AM and another 7 runs in the PM session. Much more than offered at prior autocrosses!

May 2017 Page 8 As a result of the extra seat time offered up Sunday (along with course walks and available guidance), even our fresh crop of new autocrossers looked pretty confident and quick by the end of the day! Here are some of them in action. Newcomer Craig R. and his recently acquired C6Z Newcomer Vincent S. and his EVO AWD

May 2017 Page 9 Newcomer Michael G. and his Chevrolet SS Newcomer Dok B. and his C7 Stingray (who hands down was most improved of the day and by his final couple runs was easily in the top 1/3 of the field for time). A third first was that a couple of drivers even turned down offered reruns from a timer malfunction because they and their car had had enough fun for the day and were tired and hot! LOL

May 2017 Page 10 A fourth first was Tom M. s 1969 Stingray competing. Not only had it not seen an autocross---it hadn t even been driven in 22 years! But he brought it out of cold storage for some fun through the cones! That rarity is worthy of a couple more pics on course!

May 2017 Page 11 Another first was the recent addition of Paul and April H. to our registration, timing and scoring crew! Thanks in a very large part to them and their IT prowess we had several other firsts as well. Of note, we now have a timing system and timing/scoring database that are somewhat seamlessly integrated with our website so that real-time scoring can take place! In fact, several participants accessed the live timing/scoring via our website and were able to view their run times (and others) from the comfort of the front seat of their car (while staged in grid not out on the course, of course)! Another first is that we now have a website link for each autocross event where participants, spectators, and casual observers can check out the action after the event. Besides timing results, and pictures of the AM and PM courses, we also have the ability to have our webmaster and others upload pictures and video of the event for viewing! The link to our April 23 event is: Yet another first was that a photo/videographer hobbyist was in attendance and took some nice footage of the event. Several of his videos can be found through a link on our website to our new YouTube channel at: Currently, 8 videos are up, including one of Bill S. tearing up the course in his 2014 C7 Stingray. Please follow this link and check these out and like them!

May 2017 Page 12 On that note, although the Test and Tune was unofficial in nature and meant to dust the cobwebs off our driving skills and test out some of these new CCA enhanced features, there are some congratulations in order (besides all who helped organize and run the event). I d like to first congratulate our 1 st time autocrossers, including at least Vincent S., Michael G., Craig R. and Dok B. You each showed nice improvements over the day, learning how to not only stay on course but to improve line selection, speed and flow. And it was also nice that Vincent was the FIRST person to show up at Lincoln College Sunday AM to help set up! We hope to see you all attend future events. I d also like to thank Tom. M. for returning to our event, this time in that fun to watch 69 Corvette. I d like to thank Lawrence Luu for returning this year and showing us how it s done with his fast AM runs (2 nd overall) in his Subaru. Hope to see you out again. Finally, I d like to recognize our top 5 fastest drivers (all from the PM session--the faster of the AM and PM courses): (1) Stephen C. 34:502; (2) Bill S ; (3) Jason A ; (4) Brian G ; and last but not least (5) Bob A. (our club president) (who notably managed to beat out fellow CCA members Rich T. and Pat R.). Next Autocross Event is May 21, 2017 Flyers for our next event are posted on our club calendar, and online registration is open on our new website at The flyers and registration links can also be found on our new website on the calendar page. Just click on the links, check out the details and sign up! We look forward to seeing you there. HPDE Happenings There are so many HPDE events going on that are being attended by CCA club members. In an attempt to better reflect this participation on our new CCA website in coming months we are attempting to compile a member profile and HPDE page for our track faithful. What we are looking to include: (1) favorite picks of each CCA member and their car(s) at the track; (2) a listing of tracks frequented by each CCA member; and (3) YouTube links to their favorite personal videos at various tracks (the more tracks the better). You can send this information and links to me at competition@vette-club.org and I will see that this gets forwarded to our webmaster for future use on the website. You can also speak with our resident track master Pat. R. as this is his brainchild! Until next month... Stephen Catlin CCA Competition Director catlin3@verizon.net

May 2017 Page 13 HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING EVENTS by Pat Roney CHIN AT NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM MSP April 1 st & 2 nd, 2017 Bob C and I took our time driving to NCM MSP with a stop over in Charleston, WV for the night. While we were stopped at a gas station to fuel up a young man asked if we had a race car in the trailer and asked if we knew Luke M. It turns out we stopped just 20 minutes from Luke s house. We convinced Luke to meet us for dinner and some track talk. You may remember that Luke was the driver of the Dodge Viper ACR that I enjoyed my fastest lap at VIR riding with Luke. What a small world. Chin Track Days Event Managers Scott Bartlett and Jack Beachem headed up this event and did a great job of making sure it was a safe and fun event. This was not a sold out event as is usually the case with new tracks and Chin was competing with a couple of local organizations that had events at other tracks. Chin is a very forward looking operation and is developing relationships with new tracks. Most know how I feel about the NCM MSP and Chin TrackDays as they are 2 of my favorite organizations and I am thrilled to see them working together so well.

May 2017 Page 14 Lunch at NCM MSP is Shogun Food Truck. They have been providing lunch since the opening event. The food is actually pretty good and their specialty is rice bowls with chicken, steak, shrimp and vegetables. Chief instructor Bob Towery with his Evo after a busy couple of days doing classroom instruction, checkout rides and giving rides to other drivers and guests. I managed to get a ride with Bob and learned a few things about the difference between HPDE ers and a professional driver. Once a professional race car driver, Towery retired after winning the 1998 International Motorsports Association's North American Sports Car Team Championship as a part of SpeedSource Race Engineering, a team he founded along with Sylvain Tremblay. Hopefully my car will be ready for the NCM HPDE here at NCM MSP the end of this month. However, for not having my car here my buddies made sure that I had a great time. I added a couple more to my top 5 rides. Scott Bartlett took me out in Jack Beachem s Ariel Atom and what a ride. The Ariel Atom is like a go cart on steroids. You sit a few inches off the ground and the sides are clear Plexiglas so it looks and feels like you are right on the track going a thousand miles per hour. Scott did a great job of piloting the car around the track. It is amazing how many shifts it takes to get around the track that fast. A picture of an Ariel Atom on track.

May 2017 Page 15 Matt Busby, NCM MSP Events Manager, has been out on track with me driving but this was my first time riding with Matt at speed on the track. What a great ride and lesson in car control. Matt gave me a lesson in how to drive flirting with the limits of traction and getting the most out of the car. He is only the second driver I have ridden with at that level. Mitch Wright, NCM MSP GM, with his new Factory Five race car. Mitch had just come in off track and you can tell by his smile that the car is coming together nicely. And of course, with every trip to NCM MSP comes a visit with my granddaughter Hazy Lu. Here we were just resting after playing catch. We enjoyed a great meal at Harvest in Louisville where my son is the Exec Chef. Checking on how the meal was Hazy Lu gave it a two thumbs up.

May 2017 Page 16 CHIN AT BARBER Motor Sports Park April 8 th & 9 th, 2017 Bob C and I took our time between events visiting family and friends and then met up Thursday afternoon in Birmingham Alabama in order to do a little maintenance on his car. Changing the oil on this race car is much more of a task than doing it on a street car. We pumped this heavy weight oil out of the reservoir first with a hand pump and then experimented with an electric pump. We finally got the old oil out and then on to change the oil filter which is located in the headlight cavity. We finally got the car serviced and loaded back in the trailer in time to still be able to visit the museum at Barber Motorsports Park.

May 2017 Page 17 A Daytona Prototype heading out on track in the advance group. He passed Bob and I and it was cool being with this racecar on track. A couple of Mustang GT350 s with a couple of Advanced drivers. Danny S in the black #93 is getting ready to show Nick S the best line around the track. Danny was nice enough to take Bob and I out and show us the track since this was our first time here. Danny is recognized in this group as the track expert and what a good driver he is. Bob and I were both really impressed. We met Danny and his daughter at the Chin event at NCM MSP the week before. What a great father daughter team and right now high on the list for the Father of the Year team.

May 2017 Page 18 Chrysler Corporation has a lot to be proud of with their Dodge Challenger Hellcat. I was pleasantly surprised as I worked with Shannon T in his #136 bright red Hellcat. The brakes did a good job of slowing this heavy beast down and the suspension surprised a few Porsches in the corners. Shannon did a good job handling his Hellcat and did a lot more passing than being passed. As a matter of fact, he was passed so little the first day that I had him working in the Intermediate group the second day where he was mid pack. The amazing thing was that if anybody was close to him in the corners he would point them by even though he was much faster in the straights. It was very refreshing to see a high horsepower car driver that wasn t interested in drag racing down the straights. Hellcat drivers, this young man did you proud. My buddy Bob C was kind enough to give my student a ride in his Corvette C5 race car to give Shannon an idea of what was to come for him. I often ask Bob to show students how good it can be as Bob is one of the better drivers on the track.

May 2017 Page 19 Bob refueling between sessions. Alan K, Chief Instructor for Chin TrackDays, took me out for a spin around the track and some lessons in car control. And now we have a third for the list of best drivers I have ridden with.

May 2017 Page 20 A group of Porsche drivers was parked right across from Bob C and provided some good conversation over the weekend. Bob C at work in his office. I was lucky enough to get a ride with Bob and it was amazing how well he did for his first time on this very technical track.

May 2017 Page 21 BARBER VINTAGE MOTORSPORTS MUSEUM Barber Motorsports Park is home to what is considered the top motorcycle museum in the US and one of the three best in the world with over 600 motorcycles on display at any one time and 1400 total motorcycles. The vision started as a car collection but evolved to a motorcycle museum. The focus was to preserve the history of motorcycles from an international aspect. The collection includes 216 different manufacturers from 20 different countries. It is amazing to me that 99% of all these motorcycles can run within an hour. The exceptions are the wooden motorcycles and unattainable replicas. The museum was started as a car museum before changing focus to motorcycles. There are primarily Lotus racecars on display but several other racecars are included also. The entrance to the museum. Lawn artwork outside the museum.

May 2017 Page 22 A sampling of the Lotus racecars. Bob C checking out some of the racecars.

May 2017 Page 23 Motorcycles everywhere you looked.

May 2017 Page 24 These photos were taken from the museum and give you an idea of the outstanding landscaping at this track. The walkway from the museum goes out over the track and gives a great view of the track. Notice the waterfall to the left of the walkway in the picture above. This is by far the best manicured race track I have visited.

May 2017 Page 25 National Corvette Museum at National Corvette Museum MotorSports Park April 27 & 28, 2017 The HPDE events put on by the NCM are among my favorite events every year and this was no exception. I enjoy hanging with this crew so much that I got up early and left Maryland at 5:30am in order to finish my 10 hour drive by 2pm to help with Tech In. Of course the hour difference in time helped. You have heard me touting the 95 track days that Chin Trackdays puts on, and I know that has a lot to do with their success. Well the staff of the NCM events puts on track events every week at their track. Mitch Wright and Matt Busby run the NCM Motorsports Park and they also are part of the senior staff that put on our NCM events. Add in co chief instructors Mike Newlander and Pat Sullivan along with Grid Marshall Ted Devitt and museum volunteers Jerry P and Gary and you have a very experienced staff. There are also many of the NCM MSP staff that make things go smoothly not the least of which is Paula that helped me get the Tech In sign made. There were a lot of great track cars at this event but it seems I was focused on other things and missed getting pictures of them. Roc Linkov was here and on track for the first time. Roc was the person most responsible for making this track happen. Here is Roc in his beautiful C7 Corvette.

May 2017 Page 26 There were a few awards at the morning drivers meeting. John Spencer, manufacturing integration manager for Corvette, receiving an award from Pat Sullivan, co-chief instructor for NCM. Testimonials were given by Norbert Watts, Richard Watts, Danny Johnson and Linde Johnson. Our own Art Bell is presenting an award to Gerry Wright for his part in supporting the NCM tracking events. Art is on the Board of Directors of the NCM MSP.

May 2017 Page 27 Dave L., aka Colonel Dave, presented framed event shirt pictures from the first NCM HPDE event back in 2005 and the Inaugural HPDE event at NCM MSP. Millicent M with her awesome Corvette Z06. I had the pleasure of working with Millicent at this event. We had a great time together as you can see by the big smile on her face.

May 2017 Page 28 Caught in the act. It seems two of our new members are up to mischief at this event. David C and David S are putting a RUNNER decal on my car. David S started this with blue tape while I was in an instructor meeting at the Inaugural event here in 2014 after Matt Busby and I ran the checkered flag while leading parade laps. It seems they have sophisticated the technique now. An impressive group of track participants enjoying some Newlander Reserve after a great day on track. At the left of this picture in the black shirt is Greg Haas, Chief Instructor at Summit Point, who drove out from West Virginia to help instruct here.

May 2017 Page 29 Pat Sullivan and John Heinricy catching up at the end of the day. We have a couple of GM Corvette engineers here also that spent the day on track seeing how their product performs. General consensus is that they did a great job with the Corvette. Nick C (CCA), Karl B and Cassidy Nolen (NVCC) with a GM engineer walking by. These instructors drove 10 hours or more to help out here.

May 2017 Page 30 A few of our new CCA members relaxing between track sessions. NCM MSP GM Mitch Wright busy making sure that the grass here is on the same level as Barber Motorsports Park.

May 2017 Page 31 FATHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS I have been noticing more and more fathers bringing their kids to the track to share some quality time. Here are a couple of these great fathers and kids at this Chin NCM MSP event. Danny S and his daughter Anna with their Mustangs. Anna drives the white Mustang and Danny drives the black GT350 directly behind Anna s car. Anna is very fast and I believe she was moved up to the faster Intermediate Group at this event. John L with his son Adam. I worked with John last year in the Jaguar F Type Roadster and we had a great time. This year I checked out Adam, in the white Porsche GT3, for the Intermediate Group and he did well. Father and son are now having a great time in the Intermediate Group.

May 2017 Page 32 Of course, one of my favorite father/son teams is our own Bill S and his son Jeff, shown in this picture from last year at a NASA event with their Pontiac GTO s. Please remember to keep it to the speed limit and stay alert on the street as, in my opinion, it is much more dangerous at the speed limit on the street than on the track at speed. If you would like to hear more about the tracking experience, please feel free to ask myself, or any one of our tracking group about how easy it is to give it a shot. Tracking Schedule May 5 May 15 & 16 June 2 June 5 & 6 June 9 & 10 June 26 & 27 July 1 & 2 FATT at Summit Point Main Chin at Watkins Glen FATT at Summit Point Main Chin at VIR Chin at NCM MSP NCM at VIR Chin at VIR Pat Roney Corvette Club of America Runner?? 37 May 2017 Page Chevrolet Corvette Z51 3LT $56,500 obo Like new 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 with manual transmission now for sale! This car has almost every option: 3LT equipment group, dual roof package (carbon fiber and translucent), chrome wheels, magnetic ride control, multi-mode performance exhaust, and sueded microfiber seat inserts and upper trim. It also has an Xpel clear bra. Even better than all that is the low mileage--less than 4400, of which 750 were on the trip home from the dealer (I live in Indiana but purchased the car new in North Carolina). The car has been driven in the rain only once, and has always been garaged. The translucent top has never been used. The car is due for an oil change, which will be done by my local Chevrolet dealer prior to sale. Good luck finding a cleaner, more gently used car! 40 May 2017 Page 40 The Corvette Club of America is proud to be exclusively associated with Sport Chevrolet. Be a Sport fan too!! 3101 Automobile Blvd Silver Spring, Md Contact Gerry Ryan, General Sales manager at Sport Chevrolet for a new or used car - (240) The Corvette Club of America was founded by John Ralph and Charles Eyre who organized the first club meeting on July 17, 1956 at a Chevrolet dealership in Arlington, Virginia. By the end of 1957 the club changed its name from the Capital Corvette Club to the Corvette Club of America, since it was the intent of the members to make the club a national organization. Before the end of the following year the club had over one hundred members. In 1959, the Corvette Club of America held an organizational meeting of Corvette clubs at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. The result was the formation of the National Council of Corvette Clubs which today has about 19,000 members and is the largest non-profit association of Corvette Clubs in the United States. For a variety of reasons, the CCA did not join the NCCC until July of 1966 and was awarded club #1 for its efforts in establishing the organization. In July 2016, the CCA notified the NCCC that it would terminate its 50 year membership at the end of the year. There were a number of factors but the CCA felt that focusing our limited resources on the National Corvette Museum would provide more benefit for the Corvette Community as a whole. The Corvette Club of America is a very active club today with a strong mix of competitive, social, and charitable activities. Through the years the CCA has seen many fine members come and go; however, one thing remains unchanged. The membership is composed of individuals both male and female, young and old, that share a common interest, America s Sports Car - The Corvette!
