Corvette Courier The World s First Corvette Club Celebrating our 61 st Anniversary Year President - Bob Atwell October 2017 CCA and Lincoln College of Technology are on the right path for a bright future. Rich Taylor and I had a short discussion concerning Lincoln College of Technology (LCT) at the September AX. Rich has been trying to arrange an appointment with the new president for some time without success. We agreed that he should try again to get things rolling for next year. Rich did get in touch with Mr. Cory Hughes, President of LCT, and an appointment was set for September 28th. April Hussey, Jon Thorn, Kelly Ryan and myself met with Mr. Hughes at his office at 10:00 am. Unfortunately Rich Taylor and Bill Sandusky were not able to attend the meeting. We were all pleased with Mr. Hughes attitude and in depth knowledge of car clubs in general. He is a member of BMWCCA and Philadelphia Mini Club and has held board positions in both. Mr. Hughes was very interested in CCA and what we do for the community. He was happy to know that CCA has never had an insurance claim in all 61 years. We assured him that we would do our best to keep it that way. We had a tour of renovated classrooms and class rooms in progress. He is very proud of the students and the improvements he is bringing to LCT at various levels. We discussed ways that CCA and LCT can work together, not just in AX events but also for the college and the community at large. Kelly thought it best that we schedule quarterly meetings in the future and everyone agreed, December 13 th is our next meeting in LCT's conference room to plan for He really is a Car Guy, which makes our relationship with LTC very bright. Thank you, Cory Hughes, for the opportunity to meet with you and to continue this growing relationship with Corvette Club of America! Our next Monthly Membership Meeting will be Tuesday, November 14th at the Greene Turtle in Burtonsville, MD from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. November 11th is our "Annual Toys-for-Tots Car Show and Lunch" once again at the Stonehouse Grille in Gaithersburg, MD!!

October 2017 Page 7 In partnership with the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Council of Corvette Clubs Lincoln College of Technology Columbia, MD Saturday, November 4th, 8:00AM- 4:30PM The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival is a "hands-on" driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too. It's about more than driving - it's about LIVING! Three parents, including Scott Goodyear, former Indy Car Champion, share their perspectives in this video. All Schools $75. CCA volunteers will be supporting this event. Contact Bob Atwell if you can help.

October 2017 Page 9 Editor Jon Thorn Corvette ramblings At our last Business Meeting on October 10 th our Web Queen, April, brought a pumpkin she had made to raffle off at the meeting. The raffle was a major success and brought in about $50 for the club. She made the now famous Jake-O-Lantern by carving a foam pumpkin from Michaels. Here is a photo of April with the new Jake mascot at The Green Turtle during our meeting. It turns out that I was the lucky one to win the raffle and our Jake-O-Lantern has taken on a new life as Jake the traveling Pumpkin. Jake s first trip was to the Free State Ocean City Corvette Weekend. Below we have an undercover, clandestine photo of Jake the traveling Pumpkin hanging out at The Bull on the Beach with some of the CCA club members. The photo is fairly poor quality because Jake is still working on his photography skills.

October 2017 Page 10 Jake the traveling Pumpkin hung out at our rented 32 nd street condo during OC Corvette Weekend. While the weather was not great for a lot of the weekend, Jake did get an opportunity to work on his late season tan and enjoy some of the bayside atmosphere. Carmen Sandiego has nothing on Jake the traveling Pumpkin. Where will Jake turn up next? Only time will tell! Be sure to stay tuned as Jake the traveling Pumpkin gets out and about. One thing is certain, he will not be far from the membership of the very active Corvette Club of America, Inc. Speaking of the Free State Ocean City Corvette Weekend, be sure to check out the few photographs that I was able to fit into this edition of the newsletter. You ll find them at page 30. This was another terrific event and I am sure everyone had a fun time even without cooperation from the weather. FSCC posted the Car Show Winners and we are all very proud that our member Denise Parsons won a Spina Bifida Friends Award! Unfortunately we are past the point of being able to fully cover events in the newsletter. However, thanks to our fantastic Web Team we have unlimited space to capture club events. You can simply go to the website at or better yet take the shortened address and use When you are at the website, select Events from the menu bar and then Calendar. Most of the events listed on the calendar will take you to an Event page and most of the Event pages have links to our Google Photo Album. In the case of OC Corvette Weekend, the event page is located here: and the photo album is located here. It is really cool how organized this club is becoming!!! Save the Wave!! 11 October 2017 Page 11 Competition Director - Stephen Catlin Corvette Competition Competition Report - August 2017 CCA Autocross Lincoln College October 1, 2017 For this last event of the year I tried to open the course up a bit and introduce some optional elements. After some fast slaloms and a big 270º skidpad, followed by more fast downhill slaloms, you entered an uphill section where you could go clockwise or counterclockwise around a 180º skidpad. Drivers were split on the best way and several tried both. Then it was a reverse of the course and uphill fast slaloms followed by an optional direction (and much tighter) final slalom section as shown below. After a late start trying to accommodate some last minute entries, we were able to give all of our 41 drivers 4 runs in the AM and those returning for the PM session got another four runs. Everyone seemed to enjoy the course and the once-again flawless live streamed timing thanks to April and Paul!

October 2017 Page 12 After getting my butt kicked last event when running my dead street tires I pulled out all the stops this time and brought my Hoosier slicks! Although I excluded my time of from the official results, I enjoyed obliterating the field!! Vettes Rule Supreme! One of two classic pony cars that came out to challenge our perennial Mustang entrant! Details of the action with results, pics and video can be found on our results page at This report will focus on the reaction of the drivers to this very fun event!

October 2017 Page 13 1st time autocrosser Andrew B was full of smiles driving his 2010 Grand Sport! More smiles from Jacob W! And more from Pat R and Devin S! Official FTD and class ORF win went to John V in his red Miata with a time of ! He was so fast the camera couldn t catch him! John was AM only and missed the award ceremony so we gave away his prize! LOL. But we will reward him next season.

October 2017 Page 14 2 nd fastest and the class C6 win went again to Tom R. and his 06 Vette with a time of Tom picked up a $50 gift certificate from CCA sponsor Eckler s as a prize! 3 rd fastest and the class OA win went to Colin S and his 14 Audi S4 with a very quick time of Colin picked up a $25 gift certificate from CCA Sponsor Rock Auto.

October 2017 Page 15 In the toughest fought battle of the day, classes C7 and CZ were combined and Bill S s in his C7 Stingray barely edged out Andrew T s in his dad s C6Z06. Bill picked up $30 in gift certificates from CCA Sponsor Adam s Polishes. Although hard to see, we also handed out cone-shaped CCA Class Winner stickers! Michael T. won class OF with a time of in his 95 Celica and won a coffee mug.

October 2017 Page 16 Due to a technical snafu, we failed to award a win in class ORD. However, Roy H was eventually given the honors in the pony car battle between Mustang and classic Camaro and took the win with a Congratulations Roy! Thanks to all the hard work by our club members for making this event a huge success. Pictured are Bill S, Pat R (sitting as usual LOL), Van V, April H, Paul D, Devin S, me, Bob C, Paul V, Bob A, and Jon T. Nita A left before our ceremonial picture was taken.

October 2017 Page 17 Our club is already feverishly working on making next season bigger and better. Stay tuned for some changes and dates to mark on your calendar. You will not want to miss out! Until next month Stephen Catlin CCA Competition Director HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING EVENTS by Pat Roney We have had a lot going on this year with several track events every month. It all caught up and I needed a short time to recharge. That s right, no track events for me since September 8 th but just so that you don t think I am slowing down, I am at the NCM MSP this weekend, October 14 th and 15 th and then at VIR October 22 nd and 23 rd. In the meantime I am going to fill in with some members contributions. First of all, Peter Argetsinger asked me to give a shout out about his track event at Sebring. Here is the info I was sent. Sebring 12 Hour track Tuesday November it's really geared more for intermediate to advanced drivers with no run groups just 7&1/2 hours of open track practice -- I will accept novice drivers but only if accompanied by a personal instructor -- Entry is limited but anyone interested can contact peteargetsinger@gmail.com This sounds like a lot of fun and if you can make it send Peter an . One of the things I can count on is seeing Art B at the track at least once a month. Art had a problem with an Achilles tendon and will be sitting out the next few months. Too much practicing heel/toe I guess. Art, I hope you have a speedy recovery and are ready to get back on track early next year. Art s hurt leg.

October 2017 Page 18 The following is an article that fellow CCA track guy David S wrote for his neighborhood newsletter. High Performance Driving Education aka HPDE Some of you may have noticed that every once in a while a black Chevrolet Corvette sitting on a trailer parked in my drive way over night and wonder what s up with that. What s up with that is that a friend of mine, David Campfield, and I participate with that car in HPDE events at Summit Point (near Winchester), Virginia International (near Danville) and National Corvette Museum (Bowling Green, KY) race tracks. Sometimes we load the car on the trailer the day before we leave for an event which is why you might see it in my driveway. David and I formed Remington (my middle name) Sanford (David s middle name) Racing (RSR) in 2013 to enter HPDE events. HPDE is not racing. Let me repeat that: HPDE is not racing. Rather it is a means to improve your driving skills. Starting as a novice in HPDE 1, you drive your car under the supervision of an experienced instructor. Your instructor will not allow you to drive above your abilities and you are only allowed to pass other cars on designated parts of the racetrack with your instructor s permission. As you progress and your driving skills improve you will be advanced to HPDE 2 where the speeds are higher, but still under the supervision of an experienced instructor who again will not allow you to drive above your abilities. As in HPDE 2, you can only pass other cars on designated parts of the race track. If your skills improve enough, your instructor will advance you to drive solo in HPDE 2. Once you are soloing in HPDE 2 and you think you are ready, you can take what s called a check ride with an instructor who will evaluate your driving skills against certain criteria and if you pass you will be advanced to HPDE 3 where you drive solo, drive as fast as you are comfortable driving and can pass anywhere on the track if the car you are over taking signals to you that it is okay to pass him or her. HPDE 4 is for advanced drivers only and instructors. David is qualified to drive in HPDE 4. Me, I am still in HPDE 1. Even if you have no interest in rising to HPDE 4, you might consider participating in a HPDE 1 event. It will make you a better driver, you ll have a lot of fun and will meet some really terrific people. Moreover, you will be surprised at just how much capability your car has. It doesn t have to be a car like David and I have, i.e. full roll cage, racing brakes and suspension, etc. Just your every day driver is fine to start out. Besides, you just might find out you like HPDE and want to do more. If you are interested in getting involved or just going to the track to see what it s all about, give me a call or me. David Smail Thanks for your contribution David.

October 2017 Page 19 Theo H sent in a picture of his track cars. This beautiful Corvette C7 Z06 is set up for the track and must be a blast to drive on track. Notice the big racing wing on the back of Theo s car. This is designed to keep the rear end planted at very high speeds and is a big help in corners. Theo also has a Porsche that he gets out on the track. I would also like to give a shout out for Theo s Hometown Heroes that he puts on in the summer. It is a great event with lots of action and honors the local fire department and police force. Many of our members have attended and had a good time. Watch for more info coming next spring.

October 2017 Page 20 NATIONAL SAFETY FOUNDATION INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION The NSF has been working for a couple of years to help make the HPDEs safer. As a matter of fact, the NSF was at Sebring back in January 2016 offering Simpson Hybrid Neck Protection devices and helmets for participants to try out. I rented one for a $40 fee and had the opportunity to see if it would work for me. I do recommend neck protection for all in this sport. The NSF Mission/Vision is: Improve the standards and operations of HPDE schools, Instructor training programs, and Instructors to provide a safer and better quality experience for performance driving students and Instructors NSF has developed an Instructor Certification program and Chin Trackdays has been heavily involved working with NSF on this. There are the 5 Levels of Certification: Level 1: Online Instructor training program Level 2: Hands-on Certified HPDE Organizer Instructor Training Program (for Level 1 certified Instructor Candidates only). Level 3: Classroom Instructor.

October 2017 Page 21 Level 4: Remote instruction using data acquisition and video. Level 5: Chief Instructor, with focus on operations and organization of a HPDE event, as well as the management and mentoring of instructors. Chin Trackdays has been working with NSF for a couple of years on developing the Level 2 program and is now one of just a few organizations certified to offer Level 2 training and certification. Chin s Level 2 program has 2 classroom sessions and 6 track roll playing sessions. I am honored to be one of the first to have achieved Level 2 certification. NEW CCA HPDE PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE Our Website team led by April has been working their magic on our CCA website and has upgraded the HPDE page. She has added a schedule of events our members are planning to attend as well as a list of tracks and videos that our members have done. I am really impressed with the excellent job she has done. Thanks for all of your hard work and creativity April. Here is a link to the new page: WANT TO TRY YOUR CAR OUT ON TRACK? Please remember to keep it to the speed limit and stay alert on the street as, in my opinion, it is much more dangerous at the speed limit on the street than on the track at speed. If you would like to hear more about the tracking experience, please feel free to ask myself, or any one of our tracking group about how easy it is to give it a shot. 23 October 2017 Page 23 NCM Ambassador - Terry Popkin National Corvette Museum Report I have owned Corvettes for 53 years, ever since my grandfather bought me a new 1964, 365hp C2 roadster for college graduation. That car was followed with the purchase of a 1969, 427ci, C3 Coupe and the restoration of a 1954 C1 with my closest friend. By 1988, I had to have a C4. I chose a Metallic Grey/ Grey car, an automatic, and I loved it. However, only 2 years later the ZR-1 was introduced. Just the thought of driving it was exciting. It was, literally, the fastest production car in the world and had broken every endurance speed record in that era, records that had stood for nearly 50 years; averaging 175+ mph for 24 hours and then setting the speed mark for 5,000 km. Finally, in 1994, I took the plunge and I bought my King of the Hill, a ZR-1. So, you ask, where is this narrative leading? It leads straight to the NCM. The NCM had its beginnings in 1994, and it was a beacon of light to any Corvette driver on Route 64 in and around Bowling Green, KY, (The site of the Corvette Plant). The building was a marvel of design, and a Museum tour was a history lesson that every Corvette owner would relish. However, the NCM needed Exposure and Support. My wife and I took our ZR-1 home, discovered the Museum, and became founding members (and, later, life members). I volunteered for the Museum Ambassador Program designed to promote fund raising for the NCM. When I introduced the NCM to our club, the Corvette Club of America and the CCA membership, the talk fell on deaf ears. I met frequently, with my fellow ZR-1 owners, so that we could tour to incredible places and drive at remarkable track events. These were the people with excitement in their eyes and money in their pockets (remember, the ZR-1 was a $34,000 car with a $31,000 motor as an option and the cars were selling for 2x MSRP). We elicited a plea for the NCM. Ideas abounded, messages were sent, and before long the ZR-1 owners met in Bowling Green and came to the rescue of the near failing Museum. Members volunteered for the Board, endowments were made, and Wendell Strode was hired. The rest is history. Another 20+ years has passed, the Museum has grown in membership and expanded, the racetrack has been built, the Karting Track is complete, and the future seems endless. But support is still needed. Growth takes marketing, management, and mostly financial support. Our club has stepped up to the plate and delivered, after 23 years of my pestering and pleading. So now, I do that once more. I urge all of the CCA members who have not joined the NCM family to do so. A one-year membership is $50.00 and a visit is priceless. In fact, I will volunteer to lead a tour consisting of a pack of CCA Corvette owners who have just joined the NCM on a personal tour of our Museum. It is a 12-hour drive (with planned stops) to a place I call Corvette Heaven, a visit you will remember for years, and an incentive to be a part of the Corvette Family for life. This will be an unforgettable experience. Terry Popkin, NCM Ambassador, ncmambassador@vette-club.org,

October 2017 Page 33 The Corvette Club of America is proud to be exclusively associated with Sport Chevrolet. Be a Sport fan too!! 3101 Automobile Blvd Silver Spring, Md Contact Gibbs Fogarty, Manager at Sport Chevrolet for a new or used car - (240) The Corvette Club of America was founded by John Ralph and Charles Eyre who organized the first club meeting on July 17, 1956 at a Chevrolet dealership in Arlington, Virginia. By the end of 1957 the club changed its name from the Capital Corvette Club to the Corvette Club of America, since it was the intent of the members to make the club a national organization. Before the end of the following year the club had over one hundred members. In 1959, the Corvette Club of America held an organizational meeting of Corvette clubs at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. The result was the formation of the National Council of Corvette Clubs which today has about 19,000 members and is the largest non-profit association of Corvette Clubs in the United States. For a variety of reasons, the CCA did not join the NCCC until July of 1966 and was awarded club #1 for its efforts in establishing the organization. In July 2016, the CCA notified the NCCC that it would terminate its 50 year membership at the end of the year. There were a number of factors but the CCA felt that focusing our limited resources on the National Corvette Museum would provide more benefit for the Corvette Community as a whole. The Corvette Club of America is a very active club today with a strong mix of competitive, social, and charitable activities. Through the years the CCA has seen many fine members come and go; however, one thing remains unchanged. The membership is composed of individuals both male and female, young and old, that share a common interest, America s Sports Car - The Corvette!
