Second Place winner of the National Corvette Museum Newsletter Contest: 2018, The World s First Corvette Club Celebrating our 62 nd Anniversary Year President - Kelly Ryan December 2018 As 2018 HPDE and autox activities draw to a close club members should keep their calendar open for several upcoming activities. On Tuesday evening (December 18) the members held a meeting at the Greene Turtle to begin pulling together 2019 activities. Hopefully you saw an reminder. One of the things that makes this club attractive to members is the willingness to take on new events and consider new activities. For instance, several members of the club will be part of the week long National Corvette Caravan in August. Several other members are putting their collective knowledge and experience together to develop the first CCA car rally. The club is also considering participating in the Olney Day Parade in April. All members of the club are invited to submit their suggestions for activities they d like the club to get involved with. If you have an idea but could not make the meeting please feel free to your suggestions to me. As far as recent club activities be sure to check out Jon s report on the technical clinic that took place at Tony s Corvette shop earlier this month. A hearty shout out to Rich Taylor for organizing this event and a big thank you to Tony Avedisian (club member and sponsor) for sharing his time and knowledge. The club also held its annual Toys for Tots collection and car show at a new venue, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill in Gaithersburg. There were over a dozen Corvettes on display and over twenty members and guests bringing gifts and contributions to the event. Big shout out goes to Dan Giardi and Jean Wade for organizing a very successful gathering. There are a couple club events coming up in the near future that you will want to mark on your calendar. The CCA Awards Dinner will be held at Normandie Farm in Potomac, Maryland on February 2, 2019 from 6:00 to 10:00 (snow date is February 16). All members and spouses are invited to attend this event where we will announce the Dick Thomson Award recipient and recognize other club members for their contribution to club growth and efforts. The 2019 officers and board of directors will also be introduced. Normandie Farms will be serving their normal great meal, including its world renown popover. Keep your eye on Pat Roney s column for a possible upcoming karting event in late January or early February. This karting event provides the type of upper body workout one might need for 2019 autox season. Speaking of which, the club is presently on the lookout for a new autox venue. Due to circum-

December 2018 Page 2 stances beyond our control, Lincoln Tech will no longer be able to make their lot available for auto crossing events. So, if you are aware of any large paved area (such as a parking lot without cement pavers) suitable for auto crossing events and available on weekends, please feel free to forward contact information to Bill Sandusky or me. In closing, I would like to invite all members to join us in one of our many club activities. Whether it is an autocross, one of our monthly business meetings (second Tuesday night at the Greene Turtle in Burtonsville), shop night (fourth Tuesday evening at Sport Chevrolet) or one of the many cruise or HPDE events, please consider coming and joining other members Enjoying Life with Your Corvette. 5 December 2018 Page 5 Editor Jon Thorn Corvette ramblings CCA members, as we rapidly approach the end of the year I d like to offer a reminder about the charitable activities of the club. If you are in a position to help, I have some recommendations worthy of your support and there are more on the club website (click here). One organization of course is the National Corvette Museum. There are many ways you can help. The best one is to just join the organization if you are not a member already. Another way is to participate in NCM activities. We have a group from the CCA that will be attending the th Anniversary Caravan to Bowling Green in August. This event only occurs every five years. There is lots of information on the Caravan on the NCM site (click here), or attend any CCA meeting, or watch here in the newsletter. We will have a group attending the watch party for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June at the NCM. We also will have a group attending the Corvette Racing Weekend in Hershey, PA in October which benefits the NCM. Finally, there are many ways you can financially contribute to the organization as well (click here). Another organization that deserves your help is the Traffic Safety Education Foundation run by our friend Andy Pilgrim. Andy is a former driver for Corvette Racing and is totally dedicated to spreading the word on traffic safety and the hazards of distracted driving. And his work is having an impact. He speaks at schools all over the nation. If you are in a position to donate please check out his website (click here). You should look over his website in any event. Check the articles and videos. We can all be better drivers. He really does have a life or death message. Donate if you can. One final charity that I would like to highlight for now is the CCA Student Award Fund at the University of Maryland A. James Clark School of Engineering. This is an endowment that the club began years ago to help support a student each year in the Mechanical Engineering Department. We have had multiple students graduate and enter the automobile industry as well as other industries after benefiting from this fund. The endowment is perpetual. But, as we are able to grow it, the earnings increase and we are able to provide more assistance to a student selected by the university. It is easy to make a donation directly on the University of Maryland website (click here). Changing subjects, Jean Wade has decided to retire from her position as Membership Director of the club after more than 22 years. She will be replaced next year by Paul Donohue. We are not losing Jean from the club but she wants to have a change, and I am sure a rest, after all this time. She has been the touchstone and the glue holding the club together for more than two decades. I am not sure she appreciates it but I have lovingly called her a mother hen for years. After more than 10 years of doing the monthly newsletter I know what it is to get a little tired. We all owe her a debt of thanks for her contributions. I hope she now has the time to actually enjoy being a member of the CCA! She has earned it. Continuing my Rambling, we have made it through another year and it has been a great year for the club. Just skimming the newsletters or the website will illustrate what an active club we have. There is no question that it is the membership that keeps the club going. We are entering the planning phase for the coming year. If you have suggestions for events and activities that you would like to participate in,

December 2018 Page 6 be sure to pass them along at a business meeting or in an to any of the board members. Keep an eye on the club calendar to see what is coming up and participate if you can (click here). It s your club! Save the Wave! Jon Thorn Corvette Courier Editor newsletter@vette-club.org

December 2018 Page 7 Competition Director - Bill Sandusky Corvette Competition Competition Report - December 2018 Editor s note: Bill said he had nothing additional to report from his November article since we are at the end of the year for CCA competition activities. I decided to fill his space here by re-running a picture from his rally earlier in the year. I dare say he might be the only CCA member to ever have run on the Bonneville Salt Flats. That s super cool. In addition I want to remind everyone that the hunt is on to locate a new venue for our autocross activities. If you have any suggestions or want to actively participate in the search and evaluation, please contact Bill directly.

December 2018 Page 8 HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING EVENTS by Pat Roney FATT INSTRUCTOR APPRECIATION DAY AT SP SHENANDOAH CIRCUIT Nov. 17, 2018 The Friday At The Track (FATT) management provides a nice track day event where instructors that have instructed at a minimum of 3 track days for them are treated to a nice day for us and a guest. We are treated to 4 track sessions for the instructors and 4 sessions for our guest and a nice lunch. No other HPDE group does a better job of showing appreciation for the instructors help at the track. In addition to this nice day on the track, FATT also gives us points that can be used for FATT and other defensive driving classes. Greg Haas, FATT Track Manager, briefing us on the days activities. There was a separate presentation where Greg relayed the track procedure and rules for the day to our guest.

December 2018 Page 9 As you can see, there was some snow on the ground and also on the track in places. Paul D. was my guest at this event and we had a great time. Paul really works hard preparing for a track day and it shows in his performance on track.

December 2018 Page 10 A few of the instructors trading track stories between track sessions. We had a lot of fun on track as you can see from the pictures below.

December 2018 Page 11 And between Karl and myself, we managed to get Paul and April out for some rides on track. Fellow CCA member Karl B. receiving an award for working all of the FATT s in 2018 from Greg Haas. Karl also received an award for his expertise in training on the skid pad.

December 2018 Page 12 Karl, April, Paul and I enjoyed a dinner at Railside Market close to the track. CHIN AT ROAD ATLANTA November 24 & 25, 2018 Bob C and I left for Road Atlanta Thanksgiving afternoon to get a few hours down the road and make the trip a little easier. We stopped in Aiken, SC to have lunch with one of Bob s work buddies. We arrived at the track in time for me to help with the teching of participants cars. CCA had 3 members at this event. I ran into CCA member Brian N at the Sunday drivers meeting but did not get a chance to find him later. Not sure what he was driving at this event as I did not see his race car. Picture below of Brian with his car at VIR with NCM in June.

December 2018 Page 13 Brian N. with his race car. Part of the Chin TrackDays crew was available for a picture. L-R myself, Mike D (Chief Instructor), Scott (retired event manager), Austin S, Jack Beachem, event manager for this event, Mark Hicks, GM, and Maria Herrera Hicks, event manager.

December 2018 Page 14 You can see here how cold it was Saturday morning. This was the instructors morning meeting in a heated classroom. Notice how bundled up we all were. Alan K, chief instructor and classroom instructor, giving the new drivers some good track knowledge. I always learn something new in Alan s classes.

December 2018 Page 15 Bob took me out for a session to refamiliarize me with the track. For his first time at Road Atlanta he was flying. Bob turned in some very impressive lap times for this track. He is quite the driver. Interested in renting a track car for an event? Well here is Chris Grigalunas, founder and owner of Azul Motorsports with the newest rental, a NASCAR type car with a modified LS3 motor. In addition you can rent a Mazda Miata and Corvette Grand Sport C7. Check him out at

December 2018 Page 16 Check out this beautiful Ferrari whose owner stopped by to say hello. My student for the weekend Gabe and his wife/pitcrew Tonya. This couple was awesome with Tonya doing a great job of checking tire pressure and making sure that Gabe was secure in his harness. This was Gabe s first time to Road Atlanta and per Chin procedures, every driver has to be qualified at each track. We solo d Gabe at the end of the event and he did the happy hour on his own. Gabe is solo d at several other tracks with Chin and other event providers.

December 2018 Page 17 As you can see from this picture of our Sunday morning drivers meeting, it was a bit foggy out. Any time the corner workers can t see from flag station to flag station the track is closed. We did get out at 11am for a warm up session and regular sessions started at 11:30am. Dante O. with his 1972 Porsche 911 race car. This car was beautiful and quite fast. Dante was nice enough to take me out for a session on track. I was impressed with both the car and Dante s driving.

December 2018 Page 18 Another picture showing the fog. Bob and I saw this rainbow on the trip back and were sure there was a racecar waiting for us behind the trees.

December 2018 Page 19 While bringing another track year to an end, I am very grateful to still be doing this and really enjoyed the 40 track days this year. VISIT OUR CCA HPDE PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE Our Website team led by April has been working their magic on our CCA website and has upgraded the HPDE page. She has added a schedule of events our members are planning to attend as well as a list of tracks and videos that our members have done. I am really impressed with the excellent job she has done. Thanks for all of your hard work and creativity April. Here is a link to the new page: WANT TO TRY YOUR CAR OUT ON TRACK? Please remember to keep it to the speed limit and stay alert on the street as, in my opinion, and experience, it is much more dangerous at the speed limit on the street than on the track at speed. If you would like to hear more about the tracking experience, please feel free to ask myself, or any one of our tracking group about how easy it is to give it a shot. Tracking Schedule (Keep an eye on this schedule as it will be updated regularly) 2019 Track schedule will be posted early next year. Chin Trackdays 2019 schedule is out now and we are currently planning on which events we will be attending. Pat Roney Corvette Club of America KEEP IT TO THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE STREET! THE TRACK IS A MUCH SMARTER PLACE TO SEE WHAT YOUR CAR CAN DO..

December 2018 Page 21 C1, C2, C3 Corvette Restoration Presentation Tony s Corvette Shop, December 1 st By, Jon Thorn Rich Taylor arranged with Tony for this interactive technical presentation at Tony s shop on December 1 st. There is no way that I can adequately cover all of the information that we learned but I ll try to do my best. The session started at 10 a.m. and ran a little past the scheduled time of noon. It was a cold, wet day like a lot of our days recently but we still had a little over 30 members present and several brought their Corvettes along with them. For the two or three of you that might not know Tony, he is a past president of the club and a CCA supporter and member from very early days. He is also one of the foremost Corvette experts in the country. For an indication of his expertise you ll only need to check out his book, The Definitive 1963 Corvette RPO Z06. This 411 page book covers the 1963 Corvette Z06 in amazing detail. Written with Gregory Keith and with a Foreword by David Burroughs, the Founder of the Bloomington Gold Certification, this book is focused on just 199 Corvettes of the more than 1.6 million that have been produced. But, it is far more than that because it is also a window into the very best of modern car restoration. My copy is a prized possession and, if you would like one on your coffee table, it is available from the NCM. When we arrived at Tony s he had a C2 and a couple of C3 s on the lifts in his restoration area for us to look over. He also had a collection of steering gearboxes spread out on a table. To my novice eye, the gearboxes all looked identical but the later discussion proved me wrong as usual. I had a chance to look through his book fairly thoroughly before arriving at Tony s but it will take me the rest of the winter to read it all just once, let alone try to absorb it all. A special treat was that the C2 on his lift was a 1963 Z06, one of four identical cars of the total group of 199 Corvettes covered in his book. This car was in the process of getting the full restoration treatment. The body is separated from the frame and running gear and everything is totally disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and verified. It was not a big surprise, but we learned that there are a lot more 1963 Corvettes existing today than ever originally left the assembly line. Tony showed us some of the usual tricks that people use to fake an original car and the length that they go to is not too surprising considering the value of a certified original.

December 2018 Page 22 That is Tony Avedisian, second from the left, with a few of us gathered around the 63 Z06. This is such a rare Corvette that the owner has to consider himself a custodian of history. If that is the case, then Tony has to be considered a superior history detective. We learned that in the early days of the Corvette there was enough variation on the assembly line to make verification of a car a difficult matter. Tony has thousands of photographs collected over the years as part of a giant digital database of the Corvette. He has the ability to compare a car to photos and documents of Corvettes known to have gone down the assembly line within a few days of a car under question, if not the very same day. In addition if an original part is required for a restoration, Tony has a collection developed over 30 years and he knows who to contact if he does not have it. It often includes going to the original vendor when ever possible or checking with the small community of restoration shops that have been in his contact list for decades. It is easy to see why a major restoration on an authentic original vehicle can take multiple years. I mentioned the row of steering gearboxes that he had on display. We learned the differences between them and more importantly we were shown the correct process for rebuilding them. Tony said that a correctly set up steering gearbox is one of the most important contributors to driveability in early Corvetts. We were shown how to recognize worn components and the level of effort that can go into restoring an authentic gearbox. Considering the springs, joints, shocks, bushings, sway bars and other suspension components in a Corvette it was a surprise to hear that the steering gearbox has such a dramatic impact on handling. I still could not rebuild one but I certainly have a much better appreciation

December 2018 Page 23 for what it takes to do the job properly. Here is some of our group being shown the differences between the many versions of authentic gearboxes. Below, we saw a gearbox disassembled, checked for wear, and had an explanation on what is necessary to get it properly aligned. We also saw the torque tests that are involved to make sure that gear clearances are correct.

December 2018 Page 24 We also had an opportunity to tour the shop where normal Corvette repairs are done. I ve been in the building many times over the last couple of years but I usually learn something new every time I visit. This time was no exception. Many of us are familiar with two post lifts and their four arms that swing under the Corvette. We use them all the time during our monthly shop night events at Sport Chevrolet. They are a common type of lift when you have a lot of different kinds of cars to service and using a ramp style lift isn t practical. But they have a disadvantage for Corvette because the car is low to the ground and positioning the swing arms under the car and getting them under the lifting pucks is a genuine pain. This time at Tony s I had a chance to see about a half dozen or so new lifts that were built to Tony s specs. Rather than swing arms, the two post lifts have platforms that are very low to the ground making it easy to drive a Corvette into the lift and easy to set up the lifting pucks when it is there. Here is a picture showing the detail of the platforms. When you work on a lot of Corvettes, and nothing but Corvettes, this lift design is a real time saver and saves the effort of swinging the lift arms back and forth to get a car on and off the lift. It even provides more flexibility than the swing arms do when it comes to placing the lifting pucks in the correct position for different models of Corvette. It is a small thing but it is also an example of the attention to detail on everything at Tony s Corvettes. Even the lifting pucks are custom designed for different models of Corvette as you will see on the top of the next page.

December 2018 Page 25 Here is another comment on attention to detail at Tony s. This is from Van Vander Haar: Tony is one of the few individual proprietors that own an ASNU Classic GDI machine. This machine has been designed for comparing injector against injector at a safe operating level. Tony uses this machine to make sure all the injectors in your Corvette are balanced. Tony has seen situations where an injector has been passing much less fuel than it should be, and the only way to find that out is to use one of these machines. Your Corvette may be running less than at its optimum because of this and you would never know it. That s why Tony is always at the top of his game. It s the attention to detail that separates Tony from the rest of the Corvette guys. And it s why he is the best and we are fortunate to have him as a part of our club. Tony at the ANSU injector diagnostic testing and servicing system. We also had a tour of the dyno area. I ve had cars run on in-ground and above-ground dynos and even on some fairly scary portable dynos. I say scary because the portable dynos are usually much higher off the ground on a trailer and the car has to climb up much higher portable ramps. Tony prefers the above-ground type because it is much easier to check under the car. It makes a lot of sense if you want to look for leaks that may show up during a pull and no other time. It was a very interesting two hours or so and I m certain everyone there learned something from Tony and his team. When it was time for lunch a group of us headed over to The Grill at Flower Hill and continued our discussions about America s Sports Car. It was a fun day in spite of the cold rain.

December 2018 Page 26 Highlights from 2018 Here are a few pages of highlights from this year just to remind you that the whole year has not been cold and wet like recent times! January We had an article on Elvis driving the 1959 Stingray concept car in the movie Clambake as a reminder of what would have been his 83 birthday on January 8 th. The car was designed by Larry Shinoda and Peter Brock and sat on a 1956 Corvette SS tubular frame. To tie this story closely to the CCA, this car was purchased by Bill Mitchell and raced as a privateer with Dick Thompson winning the 1960 SCCA C-Modified class Championship in it. February It was cold outside but that did not stop us from holding the annual karting event!

December 2018 Page 27 March was Killarney House for Saint Patrick s Day. It was another cold windy day come to think of it but we had 34 members show up! Upper right, that is a March FATT with snow on the ground and the cars. Just a reminder that our record rains in the fourth quarter this year could have been much worse. April we had Pat s excellent summary of the SCCA PDX at Summit Point s Shenandoah Circuit.

December 2018 Page 31 November Nine CCA members attend the Corvette Racing Weekend in Hershey, PA. Needless to say all the fans had a great time celebrating Corvette Racing s GTLM win again this year. This time included a poker run to Pottsville, PA and a tour of the Yuengling brewery along with a visit to Jerry s Car Museum. The Corvette Racing Weekend continues to grow in popularity each year. It is the prime opportunity for East Coast fans to have a dinner and spend an evening with team members. The Pottsville Nine after the brewery tour and sampling. 38 December 2018 Page 38 Sponsor Directory The Corvette Club of America is indebted to our sponsors. Without their help and support the club simply would not exist. We maintain an area on our website to recognize the help they provide to us and we encourage you to review this information. If your needs for products or services align with their offerings please be sure to check them out and let them know that you heard about them from the CCA. Each one has our unconditional recommendation. Click on a logo for more information. Charities The CCA has a long history of philanthropic and charitable support. From the earliest days of the club, there has always been a strong desire to give back to the community. The present day CCA continues that heritage through a combination of direct donations to worthy charities and volunteering of member's time and effort. Currently our principle efforts are focused toward these nine organizations and activities. While the CCA occasionally provides support for other organizations, many of these nine have been on our principal list for a decade or more. The Charities link above will take you to detailed information on the CCA website.

December 2018 Page 39 The Corvette Club of America is proud to be exclusively associated with Sport Chevrolet. Be a Sport fan too!! 3101 Automobile Blvd Silver Spring, Md Contact Kyle Bacon, General Sales Manager for a new or used car - (240) The Corvette Club of America was founded by John Ralph and Charles Eyre who organized the first club meeting on July 17, 1956 at a Chevrolet dealership in Arlington, Virginia. By the end of 1957 the club changed its name from the Capital Corvette Club to the Corvette Club of America, since it was the intent of the members to make the club a national organization. Before the end of the following year the club had over one hundred members. In 1959, the Corvette Club of America held an organizational meeting of Corvette clubs at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. The result was the formation of the National Council of Corvette Clubs which today has about 19,000 members and is the largest non-profit association of Corvette Clubs in the United States. For a variety of reasons, the CCA did not join the NCCC until July of 1966 and was awarded club #1 for its efforts in establishing the organization. In July 2016, the CCA notified the NCCC that it would terminate its 50 year membership at the end of the year. There were a number of factors but the CCA felt that focusing our limited resources on the National Corvette Museum would provide more benefit for the Corvette Community as a whole. The Corvette Club of America is a very active club today with a strong mix of competitive, social, and charitable activities. Through the years the CCA has seen many fine members come and go; however, one thing remains unchanged. The membership is composed of individuals both male and female, young and old, that share a common interest, America s Sports Car - The Corvette!
