5 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 5 Committee TORQUE President s Report Bruce Lethborg Hi Guys, Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year will be an interesting time now that we aren t working with Ford Four Car Club. This means there are less events we will be running, but, the committee is working on hooking up with another club to run events. We are still part of Group 5 so you can compete in any of the G5 events as well as any open event run by other clubs. I recommend the Marque sports series for sprints, and if you are interested in hillclimbs, Gippsland car club run a series throughout the year. Check the CAMS and Gippsland car club websites for dates. Our Sandown sprint on April 28 will clash with a sprint at Phillip Island, so we don t suffer a financial loss, it will be rescheduled for later in the year when dates become available for Sandown. Speaking of Phillip Island, the track has had $3,000,000 spent on a full resurfacing of the track. The job was completed in two days, and from all reports, it s as smooth as a baby s bum. Sandown is also undergoing resurfacing but only sections of the track. So hopefully the very slippery sections at turns 3,4,5,10,12,and 13 will be fixed and also iron out some of those bumps. There are a few events in February to kick the year off. Two Motorkhanas, a practice khana at Werribee on the 2nd and the first round of the Victorian Motorkhana series also at Werribee on the 24 th. The first round of the Victorian Supersprint series at Phillip Island on the 9 & 10th then there is the Porsche Club Victoria s 6 hour regularity at Sandown on the 23 rd & 24th. We have a team running in this event. Last year one of our teams took out third place, so maybe we can do better this year. The January meeting will also be the presentation night and will be held at Cresco park in Warrendyte starting around 6pm with a BBQ then later the meeting and presentations will begin. We will be renewing memberships as well so if you are competing in any of the events in Feb you will be able to collect your new membership card on the night. So bring along some meat and drinks for the barby and have a fun night. This month is 40 years since I started my apprenticeship as a mechanic at Col Paige Ford in Footscray, and I m still not qualified. I didn t think I would still be spinning spanners after all these years but I am. The advances in the car industry in the last forty years is amazing. In 1973 we were called mechanics, now we are called automotive technicians, engines had carbies, points ignition and pushrods. Now it s multi point and direct injection, no points or distributors, multivalve overhead cam petrol and diesel engines power cars. Safety was seat belts fitted to all seats in cars, now we have many passive and active safety devices fitted as well as crumple zones designed to absorb impacts. Airconditioning was an expensive option and you had to wind the windows down by hand. An AM radio was standard, a cassette player was an option as well as power steering and rear disc brakes were just starting to become available on performance and luxury cars. What is ahead for the apprentice who starts their career in 2013 who knows, but I m sure it will be just as amazing as it has been for me. Cheers Bruce printed by Maroondah Printing (03)

It is going to be a challenging year for the club with our partnership with FFCC ended. The committee is looking out for other possibilities and we will need competitors, helpers and officials for future events so get out there and get involved. You will find a new form in this mag as well as on the website for Club Permit holders to declare their involvement in officialing and other club activities. This form must be filled in when renewing your club permit from this year on. It is a further incentive to be involved. Coming up is the Phillip Island Historics which will also feature Car Club Displays. If you want to display your car or need tickets contact me. 8 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 8 PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT GETS A FACELIFT The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit had a major facelift with the resurface of the world famous km Australian circuit. Over 5000 tonnes of asphalt was laid on December 11 and 12 in a $3 million upgrade that s set to deliver the smoothest, fastest motorcycle circuit in the world. After months of preparations, site surveys and milling of 40 mm off the old surface, the final pave took two days. Roll out starts at 6.30am just before the last turn on to Gardner Straight, proceeding through Doohan Corner and finishing just before Stoner Corner. The paver machines will lay 300 tonnes of asphalt an hour travelling at a consistent pace of about 5 metres per minute. The last resurface was in and prior to that in 1988 before the first Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix - and circuit Managing Director, Fergus Cameron has been present at all three upgrades. The circuit owners Linfox are committed to enhancing the reputation of the circuit which is regarded as one of the best motorcycle racing tracks in the world and this upgrade is part of their continuous improvement program. To ensure the quality of the high grade asphalt a portable batching plant has been installed on site. The huge plant was shipped to the island last month in nine over -sized low loader trailers, from its last commission on the Hobart airport runway. Sergio Cinerari, the Chief Operating Officer at Downer Australia who has also worked on all three resurfaces. Also on the team is engineering firm Aurecon. A fleet of construction equipment and up to 70 personnel are working on site to complete resurface work which includes upgrades to other infrastructure while the circuit is shut down. The circuit is used over 300 days a year and we have had a good 14 years from this track. It was time for a makeover, said the circuit s Fergus Cameron. The track has served us very well but it is time to give it a makeover. Because of the layout and setting of this track, Phillip Island is considered one of the world s motorsport meccas. It never fails to produce awesome racing, and we want to ensure riders and drivers compete on the smoothest, fastest track in the world. Cameron assures race fans there will be no significant changes to the shape of the hallowed track and all will be in readiness for the Island Classic for historic bikes come late January and for the World Superbike riders in February.
