TURNING THE PAGE The Western Washington University softball team looks to turn the page following a disappointing 2009, and enters the 2010 campaign with renewed purpose, eager to fulfill the potential of a deep and versatile roster. Last spring, hampered by inexperience and injuries, Western finished and placed fourth (16-20) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Last season was a great learning experience for us, said Coach Lonnie Hicks (9th year, ). As a team, we learned a lot about ourselves, about each other, about what it takes to compete at this level and about dealing with adversity. Much of the 2009 woes centered on season-ending injuries to pitcher Sarah McEnroe (Woodinville) and first baseman Meghan Flem (Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley), who both received second-team all-league recognition. Now seniors, McEnroe and Flem are healthy and ready to lead the Vikings. McEnroe headlines a deeper and more durable pitching staff, while Flem paces a dangerous lineup that also features first-team GNAC all-star junior outfielder Michelle Wrigley (Bothell), junior catcher Samantha Rutherford (Kenmore) and freshman infielder Rachelle Berry (Alger/Burlington-Edison). We should be strong on both sides of the ball this year, Hicks said. That balance and our depth will give us a lot of flexibility to put our players, and our club, in a position to be successful. McEnroe is expected to lead a talented, but inexperienced Viking pitching staff, that also features junior Erika Quint (Silverdale/Central Kitsap), a

6 WESTERN WASHINGTON SOFTBALL transfer from Olympic CC, and freshman Erika Hendron (Redmond). McEnroe has 26 career wins and has pitched 329-1/3 innings, while the rest of the Western staff has a combined two victories and 61-2/3 innings. A hard-throwing right-hander, who was a second-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association West Region all-star as a freshman, McEnroe boasts a three-year earned run average of 2.47 and ranks among the career leaders at Western in innings pitched and complete games (38). She posted a 2.25 ERA in 106 innings pitched a season ago, adding a 9:1 strikeout to walk ratio and allowing just one home run. Sarah has developed into one of the premier pitchers in the GNAC, said Hicks. She is throwing harder than ever and has shown an ability to attack hitters on both sides of the plate. Her ability to command the strike zone and keep hitters off balance is the key to her success. Quint is the younger sister of former Viking standout Jackie Quint. In two seasons at Olympic CC, Quint won 30 games and was twice named to the NWAACC North Region all-star team. She was named the North Region s Pitcher of the Year as a freshman, having a 16-7 record with a 1.57 ERA and 173 strikeouts. Erika is a tremendous competitor, who will add talent and experience to our pitching staff, Hicks said. She throws in the low 60 s, with great movement and has the ability to change speeds and pitch ahead in the count. Hendron earned second-team Class 4A All-State honors and was named the KingCo 4A Pitcher of the Year, after posting an 18-7 record, a 0.58 ERA and a league-best 170 strikeouts during her senior season at Redmond High School. Erika should step right into our rotation and make an immediate impact, said Hicks. She is a durable kid with tremendous command of all her pitches and a natural ability to miss bats. Rutherford enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore, hitting.309 with a.400 on-base percentage, a.412 slugging-percentage and 18 runs batted in. She hit.319 with two home runs and 14 RBI in the season s secondhalf, while replacing the injured Flem in the lineup. A rare fleet-footed catcher, Rutherford is a perfect 14-for-14 in stolen base attempts in her first two seasons at Western. Rutherford, a defensive standout, threw out 28 percent of would-be base stealers while her presence behind the plate limited opponents to just 19 attempts. Freshman Jackie Rothenberger (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) is a solid defensive catcher, with an ability to hit for both power and average. She should compete immediately for playing time. Rothenberger played 18 Gold Ball for the White Rock Renegades, hitting.372, with a.441 on-base percentage, six doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI last season. She led the Renegades to the 2009 national championship, belting a tenthinning, game-winning home run in the final.

Sam and Jackie give us flexibility and options behind the plate, Hicks said. Both are complete players capable of handling a pitching staff, running a defense and hitting in the middle of our lineup. Four starters return to a deep and slick-fielding Viking infield, which ranked among the best defensive units in the GNAC a season ago. As many as eight players could see significant playing time, led by Flem at first base. Flem hit.489 (23-for-42) with three doubles, three home runs and a.632 on-base percentage in 18 games before suffering a broken fibula at Central Washington on March 29. She is the program s career leader in home runs with 17, including a single-season record of nine in A.306 career hitter, Flem also ranks among the program leaders in onbase percentage (.382), slugging-percentage (.491) and RBI (87). Meghan (Flem) is an elite hitter, with the rare ability to hit for average, power and run production, said Hicks. She has an effortless swing which should allow her to recover fully and step back into the middle of our line-up as one of the nation s best hitters. Two talented underclassmen will be pushing for playing time. Sophomore Krista Bickar (Hoquiam) continues to improve and should get plenty of at bats in the middle of the Western lineup at first base or designated player. She hit.253 last season while posting team-best totals of four home runs and 24 RBI, reaching base at a.363 clip. Berry is expected to make an immediate impact for the Vikings as a frosh. A left-handed hitter with power to all fields, hit.427 with 19 RBI and 35 runs scored as a senior captain at Burlington-Edison High School last spring, helping the Tigers to the Class 2A state championship last season. A two-time first-team all-state pick, Berry also was the team s defensive MVP as both a junior and a senior. WESTERN WASHINGTON SOFTBALL A trio of experienced Vikings will compete for playing time in the middle infield. Returning starters Caitlin Dotlich (Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edison) and Stephanie Fox (Sammamish/Eastlake) saw most of the action last season at shortstop and second base, respectively. Both will be pushed hard by redshirtfreshman Melissa Becker (Puyallup/ Graham-Kapowsin). Fox hit.253 and led Western in walks (24) and on-base percentage (.431), adapting nicely to the lead-off spot as a freshman. She finished second on the team with 23 runs scored and received all-gnac honorable mention. Dotlich, a junior, has started 84 games at shortstop over the past three seasons. A solid defender with a propensity to make spectacular plays on a regular basis, Dotlich has averaged 16 RBI and 14 runs scored over the past two seasons. We feel very good about our depth up the middle, Hicks said. All three players are versatile enough to play on both sides of the bag and give us a lot of flexibility when building a line-up. Junior Kelsey Anderson (Mount Vernon) and sophomore Jordan Emmil 7

8 WESTERN WASHINGTON SOFTBALL (Colville) split time at third base in 2009 and are expected to do so again this season. Anderson committed just four errors in 74 chances last season. She hit.256, with 16 runs scored and five stolen bases. In two seasons at Western, Anderson is 16-for-19 in stolen base attempts. Kelsey is primed to take a big step forward as a junior, said Hicks. As she continues to improve, she should develop into a tremendous table setter with the potential to hit well over.300 and score a lot of runs for us. Emmil hit.283 (13-for-46) over her last 19 games last year as a freshman, ranking fourth on the team during that span. Five outfielders who played in at least 23 games each for the Vikings last spring return, while a quartet of newcomers add speed and depth to the unit. Wrigley has started 93 straight games in left field and is a two-time firstteam All-GNAC selection. She is a.348 hitter in two seasons at Western,.001 points off of Andie Greenen s career batting average school record of.349. Wrigley has led the team, and ranked among the GNAC leaders, in batting average, runs scored, hits and multihit games each of the past two seasons. Last year, she batted.360. Michelle has been such a consistent contributor, Hicks said. She truly sets the tone for our offense at the top of the order and it s exciting to see her continue to improve as she gets more and more experience at the college level. The competition in center field revolves around junior Karli Baumgartner (Silverdale/Central Kitsap) and sophomore Jessica Carey (Everett), a transfer from Ohio Dominican. Baumgartner is a tall, rangy athlete who can cover a lot of ground with a long and effortless stride. She drove in eight runs last spring on five hits. Carey has outstanding speed and an accurate throwing arm. She was a first-team Class 4A all-state selection as a senior at Everett High School. When not pitching, McEnroe could see a lot of duty in right field. She was a regular there as a freshman, hitting.295 with five doubles. Another right field candidate is junior Hilary Cosentino (Stevenson). A team leader and one of the squad s most versatile players, she started nine of the last 10 games in 2009, hitting.250 (4-for-16) with three walks and three RBI over that stretch. Cosentino has a career on-base percentage of.319 and is a perfect 9-for- 9 in stolen base attempts. Anderson, Berry and Rothenberger are also expected to see action in the outfield. Both Anderson and Berry are athletic enough to play all three outfield spots, while Rothenberger s strong arm and offensive ability make her a perfect fit at either corner. The Vikings open their season against defending GNAC champion Montana State Billings on Feb. 27.

VIKING TRADITIONS Western Washington is the winningest program in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history with 114 wins in seven seasons (an average of nearly 17 conference wins per season). The Vikings are (.603) in GNAC play, including a 15-5 mark during the 2007 conference championship season (left, top). 07 GNAC Champions Each year, the Vikings host Pack the Park day during a key Great Northwest Athletic Conference series. Western set an attendance record of 349 while sweeping Central Washington (4-1 & 5-2) in last season s inagural promotion. The 2010 event is set for Saturday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. against the arch-rival Wildcats. Pack The Park 09 In the biggest games of the year, the Vikings will BLUE OUT (Navy jerseys, undershirts, pants, sox and cleats) in hopes of blowing out the competition. Western is 7-1 when wearing its BIG GAME BLUES since the tradition began during the 2008 regular season. All-Blues 08 (Phoenix, AZ)

37 SIMON FRASER TO JOIN GNAC IN Simon Fraser University has officially accepted an invitation to become the 10th full-fledged active member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, GNAC Commissioner Richard Hannan has announced. Hannan made the announcement during a press conference on the SFU campus in Burnaby, B.C. Wednesday. The GNAC is a NCAA Division II conference, which currently has member institutions in five states including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Simon Fraser s membership is effectively immediately. Its teams will begin competing in the conference in the fall of The Canadian s school membership application to the GNAC was unanimously approved by the GNAC Management Council and the GNAC CEO Board, which is composed of the presidents and chancellors of the nine universities. The member institutions of the GNAC have been considering expansion for a number of years, Dr. Philip Eaton, who is the president of Seattle Pacific University and the chair of the GNAC CEO Board, said. We have looked at a huge number of possible institutions. Simon Fraser University is ideal and fits the profile of our conference extremely well. So we celebrate the culmination of a lot of hard work and eagerly welcome our friends at Simon Fraser into our conference. Earlier this summer, Simon Fraser became the first institution outside the United States to enter the NCAA membership process after the Division II Membership Committee accepted the institution s application during a meeting in Indianapolis. Western Oregon University and Western Washington University. In addition Humboldt State University (Calif.) and Dixie State College (Utah) are affiliate members in football. The NCAA is very excited that Simon Fraser has been accepted to start the membership process with Division II and has been invited by the GNAC to become a new conference member, NCAA Division II Vice President Mike Racy. The next few years will be very important as Simon Fraser seeks active Division II membership and the NCAA is pleased that the GNAC office and its member schools will be there to assist Simon Fraser with this important initiative. No one would dispute that the highest level of intercollegiate sport in North America is played at the NCAA, and that s where we want to be - in the NCAA and as a member of the GNAC, SFU athletic director David Murphy said. We re a Division II fit in philosophy, with our emphasis on student-athlete balance, facilities and level of athletics competition. We re looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the GNAC. This (joining the GNAC and NCAA) is a first for a Canadian university, and it reflects our long history of competing in U.S. varsity associations and conferences, said SFU President Michael Stevenson. It means a high level of competition and challenge for our athletes. As has always been the case, our primary concern is that our athletes succeed as students. The NCAA and GNAC have strong academic requirements and we will maintain the high academic The addition of Simon Fraser opens an exciting new chapter for the GNAC, Hannan said. We are extremely pleased that Simon Fraser has accepted our invitation to become a member of the GNAC. SFU provides us with another quality institution - academically, athletically and geographically. Simon Fraser will compete in the conference in football, volleyball, men s and women s soccer, men s and women s cross country, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s indoor track and field, men s and women s outdoor track and field, softball and golf. SFU currently sponsors teams in 14 of the GNAC s 15 officially recognized sports. The only conference sport in which it doesn t participate is baseball. Simon Fraser began a two-year candidacy period for NCAA membership this fall. It also must complete at least one year of provisional status before being accepted as full-time Division II member, meaning the Canadian institution could become an active Division II member - and become eligible for post-season play - by the fall Simon Fraser becomes the 10th full-fledged GNAC member joining the University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington University, Montana State University Billings, Northwest Nazarene University (Idaho), Saint Martin s University (Wash.), Seattle Pacific University (Wash.),

THE UNIVERSITY Western Washington University is a public, comprehensive university with a national reputation for academic excellence, dedicated to providing the highest quality undergraduate education in the Pacific Northwest. A Western education offers students the opportunity to develop active learning skills to last a lifetime and serves them well in today s pluralistic, changing and highly technical world. While large enough to offer students a range of top quality programs, Western remains small enough to focus its resources on the needs of individual students as they build career skills on the sound foundation of the arts, humanities, sciences and professional studies. THE CAMPUS Western s main campus on the western slope of Sehome Hill has been called a jewel of a university. It offers a magic blend of art and nature with views of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands to the west and a panoramic vista of the city of Bellingham. Some campus locations also offer scenic views of Mount Baker and Washington s Cascade Range to the east and the Canadian Cascades to the north. The campus is just minutes by bus from downtown Bellingham as well as the city s historic Fairhaven district, and its proximity to both locations also puts it within easy walking distance. Western s main campus and the adjacent Sehome Hill Nature Reserve encompass 216 acres near the heart of Bellingham. Counting Lakewood Recreation Center and Boathouse, the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, and the Viqueen Lodge, Western properties occupy 300 acres. THE STUDENTS Over 13,000 students call Western home during each academic year, starting in late September and continuing through June. A third of Western s students reside in on-campus residence halls. Western offers something for every student, with more than 100 cultural, academic, recreational, religious, social and political clubs and organizations as well as multiple venues for the performing arts and extensive opportunities for community service. PROGRAMS & DEGREES Western is organized into a graduate school and seven undergraduate colleges: the College of Business and Economics, the College of Fine and Performing Arts, Fairhaven College, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Huxley College of the Environment, the College of Sciences and Technology, and Woodring College of Education.

WWU ATHLETICS In its 10th year as a full member of NCAA Division II (Sept., 1998), Western Washington University already has made national appearances in men s and women s basketball, men s cross country, women s soccer, women s rowing, football, men s and women s golf, softball and volleyball. The Vikings have won the last four NCAA II National Championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) in women s rowing, becoming the first school in any division to accomplish that. Western placed second nationally in volleyball in 2007 and women s rowing in 2002 and 2003, and reached the national semifinals in men s basketball in 2001 and women s basketball in A member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Western won the league s first four All-Sports Championships in , , , ), and placed second the last three years. In women s basketball, Western ranks among the top 15 in alltime victories among all four-year schools, having a streak of 10 national appearances snapped last season. The Vikings had the fourth-longest winning streak in NCAA II history when they won 57 consecutive league matches in volleyball from and took 38 straight victories in women s soccer from Western won the NAIA National title in softball in The Vikings athletic history dates back over a century. Intercollegiate competition began in football and basketball in Today, nearly 500 student-athletes compete in 16 varsity sports. The 2007 NCAA Report found that 69 percent of Western studentathletes receive their degrees in six years or fewer. That was five percentage points higher than the average for student-athletes in the 10-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference (64 percent), and 14 points higher than the national average for NCAA II schools (55 percent). FACILITIES Athletic facilities on Western s campus include Sam Carver Gymnasium, a softball field, artificial-surfaced Viking Field, a sixlane all-weather rubberized track, and four practice fields. Carver Gym, completed in 1962, has five basketball courts, including a main gym which seats 2,534 spectators. It also has a swimming pool, handball courts, a strength and fitness center, and convertible facilities for volleyball, which includes a SportCourt. Football and men s and women s soccer games are held at Bellingham s Civic Stadium, as are major track meets. The stadium, built in 1961, with an addition in 1971 and renovated in 2006, has covered seating for 3,640 spectators and lights for night use. A FieldTurf surface was installed in The track is an eight-lane, 400-meter oval.

Softball contests take place on campus at Viking Field, a facility completed in There is seating for 500. Rowing events are held on Lake Whatcom, with the boathouse located at Lakewood. Cross country competition is conducted at Lake Padden Park. Golf matches are held at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. BELLINGHAM Nestled on the shores of Bellingham Bay, in the shadow of Mt. Baker, Bellingham boasts a vibrant population of nearly 75,000. Easily accessible from Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., Bellingham touts itself as an escape from the ordinary. With breathtaking nautural beauty and quaint waterfront villages it is easy to see why. Bellingham offers up the perfect blend of community and cosmopolitan. A combination unique to this humble outpost in the northwest corner of Washington state. Bellingham is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide variety of exciting activities year round. Skiers and snowboarders flock to Mt. Baker, home to the single-season snowfall world record, during the winter months. In the spring and summer, biking, hiking and boating take center stage with the coastline of Bellingham Bay and the nearby San Juan Islands providing a beautiful backdrop. Numerous parks can be found along the cities coastline and further inland on the shores of Lake Padden and Lake Whatcom. Downtown Bellingham and the Fairhaven district, both within walking distance from the Western campus, provide students and residents alike with the energy of a larger city and the charm of small, tight-knit community. A vibrant cultural region, Bellingham is dotted with numerous art galleries, museums and boutiques. Restaurants adorn the city streets, representing a wide variety of dining options, including brew pubs and cafes featuring fresh local fare. A local farmer s market convenes every Saturday. Just one of many festivals that bring the community together. In the spring teams of competitors compete in the annual Ski-to- Sea event. The race from the top of Mt. Baker to the shores of Bellingham Bay is a long standing tradition. Encorporated in 1903, Bellingham has held fast to its traditions over the years. Known for its friendly, active population, adventurous spirit and tree-lined streets, Bellingham provides an ideal setting in which Western students can live and learn.
