1 Beyond Hopkins Baseball Matt Righter Righter, a 2004 Hopkins graduate, is a member of the Detroit Tigers farm system. He saw playing time during the 200 season at Erie and Lakeland. September 2000 was my first fall baseball season as a player. Looking back over the past eight falls there are a few things that come to mind: tradition, great baseball atmosphere and game notes. The tradition of the fall ball season will never be questioned. The fall season has allowed for freshmen to become acquainted appropriately via song, story and often unexpected home runs off pitches that in high school would ve been strikeouts. Other team functions also help in the development of the family/team dimension. The atmosphere provides great camaraderie, while allowing a competitive outlet. (I am pretty sure the The white jersey team is still the best of all fall teams!) While there is certainly an emphasis on performance, fall ball has the right balance of having fun and competition. and finally game notes with coach Babb. Coach goes over his notes after every game, questioning plays as well as offering advice. Game notes will even carry over into the night for fall coaches as they study them over Gilly s famous chips and salsa as well as her (my favorite) homemade guacamole. I guess there are many reasons why I liked fall ball as a player and coach, but I would have to say there are two reasons I continue to come back that stand out. Coach Babb and the athletic department are like family to me. I have always felt welcome and comfortable here through the good and bad times. They have always supported me 100%. It is nice to help out after the many years of help I have been given while I was here. If I can help in any way to make the program better, then I will certainly do so. I will always have a special appreciation for JHU Fall Baseball. Paul Winterling Winterling, a 2005 Hopkins graduate, is a member of the Baltimore Orioles farm system. He saw playing time during the 200 season at Frederick and Delmarva. The Johns Hopkins baseball family has helped me in many ways over the last seven years. Whether as a student, player, alumnus, or coach, Hopkins baseball has always given me the opportunity to succeed. As a student, coach Babb monitored our progress in the classroom and guided us to the proper resources when help was necessary. He also wrote a recommendation to the Residential Life Office, which helped me to become a Residential Advisor. As a player, coach Babb led my teammates and I to three Centennial Conference Titles and a number 1 national ranking. As an alumnus, the Hopkins Family (Michelle Setty) provided me the opportunity to have an internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As a minor leaguer, I ve been privileged to use the Hopkins facilities, which have been funded by Friends of Hopkins Baseball, for my workouts. As all of the above, I ve been fed numerous free meals by many members of the Hopkins Family. It pleases me to now have the opportunity to give back to the family to which I owe so much. As a coach, I am able to instill the knowledge that I have gained from playing for the last 20 years, specifically over the last three years as a professional. I hope by showing today s Hopkins players the steps I took, that they might take their game to the next level and will have the same opportunity I had. 16 ABCA All-Americans Recent draftees (L-R) Rob Sanzillo, Matt Righter and Paul Winterling returned to Hopkins during the offseason to assist with the Blue Jays 200 fall ball workouts and reflected on what being part of the Hopkins baseball family has meant to them. Rob Sanzillo Sanzillo, a 200 Hopkins graduate, is a member of the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. He saw playing time during the 200 season at Johnson City. While weighing my options as to where to spend my first off-season, Hopkins was the choice that made the most sense. Coach Babb offered me the opportunity to help coach fall ball. The chance to give back to JHU baseball, which gave so much to me, was absolutely the thing to do. After a summer of learning from professional coaches, I was excited to be able to return and teach some of the techniques I learned to the current players to use this year. Living within walking distance of the Hopkins campus provided me with easy access to the athletic facilities, which meant it was easy to workout at any hour during the day. It wasn t only working out that was helpful, but being surrounded by people who were working as hard I was. I have been training with the senior class for the past three years and their pushing me was a big reason for my success last year. Being in Baltimore, with the same guys, ensured that I would work hard again during the off-season. The fact that Matt and Paul were coming back helped solidify my decision. Learning and getting advice from former teammates who have played professionally longer than I have was a tremendous help in preparing me for the upcoming season. Lastly, I just wanted to be with my friends. It s sad knowing that I won t be stepping on the field with my best friends at the start of the season. Good luck boys, I miss you. 89 All-Centennial Conference selections 25

5 Hopkins Baseball in the Community Blue Jays in the Community Johns Hopkins Baseball makes strides on the field and in the community GIFTS FOR THE NEEDY Every JHU baseball player is obligated to purchase at least two new toys or gifts during the last half of the first semester. Most players contribute many more to the cause. These new toys and gifts are delivered to Family and Children s Services of Baltimore, which then distributes the gifts throughout the holiday season. Families with single parents and families of drug addicts are just a few of those who benefit from the program. This year, coach Babb, Uncle David Mock, Jonas Fester and James Teta (pictured) delivered the toys to Family and Children s. 16 ABCA All-Americans 89 All-Centennial Conference selections NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENTS Every fall, the JHU baseball team and coaches walk to an adjacent park and spend the day on a clean-up project. The team cuts dead branches, rakes leaves, pulls weeds, collects trash, cleans restrooms, creates paths and clears brush. RELAY FOR LIFE Motivated by the death of Tony Margve s (on left) mother and Nick Venezia s (on right) battle with Hodgkins s disease, JHU baseball participated in last spring s Relay for Life on the Hopkins campus. The American Cancer Society recognized the efforts of our team and supporters. Last year, JHU baseball raised almost $18,000, the top online fundraising college relay team. The team has been named a Nationwide Team of Excellence by the American Cancer Society. Tony and Nick proudly display the plaques which the team received. 29
