Jackson Field (1,500) GAME INFORMATION Snow may have cancelled their series finale with Utah Valley State over the weekend and postponed their game with Metro State by a day, but the University of Northern Colorado baseball team will finally get to play on Wednesday afternoon when they host the Roadrunners for a 3 p.m. game. The meeting is the 116th all-time between the teams and marks the 27th consecutive season that the teams will do battle. THE BEAR FACTS The Bears split a doubleheader with fellow Division I Independent Utah Valley State over the weekend before snow came and cancelled Sunday s series finale. The Bears took game one of the series 4-1 behind great pitching from Jason Sands and Bobby Perry but fell behind early and lost game two by a score of The all-time series with UVSC now stands at 3-3. During Saturday s game, senior Brad Baker recorded his 614th career at-bat, becoming the program s career leader in that category. He was 2-for-3 with a triple in game one before breaking his finger in the field in game two, and having to leave the game early. Baker also moved into fifth on the career triples list and eighth in career total bases. This will be the Bears only game of the week, as the team will be off until April 19 when they travel to play at the Air Force Academy. The return home next weekend for a three-game set with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Runners are 4-8 on the season away from home. Clint Cleland leads the team with a.353 average while Greg Garrison is hitting at a.311 clip. Series History: Metro State is the Bears longest current rivals, as the team s have played in each of the past 26 seasons. You have to go all the way back until 1978 to find the last season the teams did not play. The teams split a pair of games last year, with the Bears winning 8-6 in Greeley (behind Jon Dyson s five RBI) and the Runners winning 6-1 in Denver (behind a three-run home run by Cleland). The team s have played some memorable games in recent years, including the Bears winning 31-9 at Jackson Field in April on 2003; the Bears set numerous school and NCAA records in that game. That game followed a pair of exciting games at Metro that saw UNC win and Metro win NORTHERN COLORADO NOTES Errors Build Up: The Bears have been an outstanding defensive team this year, fielding at a.972 percentage, a mark that leads all D-I Independents. Entering the second game of a doubleheader against Utah Valley State on April 9, the Bears had committed only three errors in their last nine games. They then proceeded to commit five in that game, including three alone in the second inning on their way to a 14-1 loss. Jackson Field Runs Low: In a 14-1 loss to Utah Valley State at Jackson Field (Apr. 9), the Bears lone run was the fewest number of runs scored in a game at home under head coach Kevin Smallcomb (the previous low was three done several times). Overall, it was the fewest runs scored by the Bears since scoring one against North Dakota on April 14, a stretch of 64 games. The Bears scored their lone run in the sixth inning, avoiding a shutout at home for the first time in a decade. Perry Shuts Them Down: Senior pitcher Bobby Perry has found his groove in the bullpen. At Southern Utah he got the win out of the bullpen and against Utah Valley State (Apr. 9) he got his first save in an UNC uniform, pitching the final three innings and retiring all nine batters he faced; in that game he threw 27 pitches, 22 of which were strikes. In his last two appearances, he has retired 24 of the last 25 batters he has faced. Snow Ends Utah Valley State Series Earlier Than Expected: The Bears and Utah Valley State were unable to play the final game of their three-game series, as snow cancelled the April 10 game. It marked the second time this year the Bears had lost a game to snow, as their season-opening doubleheader against Air Force was cancelled (those games will be made up on April 19 in Colo. Springs). The Metro State game scheduled for April 12 also had to be moved back a day due to snow. This isn t the first time weather has plagued the Bears over the past two years, as last year s season-opener (and home-opener) versus Nebraska-Kearney was also cancelled due to snow. The first of three games at Arizona (Feb. 11) was moved back a day due to rain, making the Bears season debut occurring on Feb. 12, four days later than originally planned. Baker Sets Career At-Bats Record: With an at-bat in the fourth inning of game one of a doubleheader against Utah Valley State (Apr. 9), senior Brad Baker recorded his 614th career at-bat, the new career at-bats record in program history. He passed Jeff Simpson who had 613 at-bats from He recorded his 600th career atbat on March 25 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, also becoming only the second player in school history to reach that mark. Baker recorded his 200th career hit on March 20 at Creighton with a double in the second inning; in doing that he became only the second UNC player to ever record 200 hits in a career and is now 11 hits away from the school record of 215 held by Jordan Berge). Baker also ranks in the top 10 in doubles (35-12 away from the record) and triples (10 - two away from the record) and also entered the total bases top-10 against Utah Valley State; he ranks ninth all-time in total bases (283). Baker saw his school-record 129 consecutive games with a start come to an end on Feb. 26 at Kansas. It marked the first time since April 16 of his freshman season that he had not started. He has now started in 160 of his last 169 games overall, however, he broke his finger in the second game against Utah Valley State had had to leave that game early. Baker reached his 100th consecutive start in the second game of a doubleheader on March 30, 2004 when UNC beat Air Force He was 1-for-3 with two RBI at No. 14 Arkansas (Apr. 6), snapping a 0-for-12 slump at the plate. Rocky Mountain High: After playing 26 of their first 33 games of the season on the road, the Bears are in the midst of a stretch that will see t hem play 11 of its next 13 at home and all 13 games between now and May 10 will be played in the state of Colorado. The Bears will not leave the Centennial State until playing at Wichita State on May 10. By completing their series with Arkansas, the Bears ended a stretch that saw them play 23 of 27 games away from home; during that stretch they only played a pair of doubleheaders against Air Force. 4 THE BEAR NECCESSITIES If you don t have time to read everything in this packet, these are the key notes about the Bears. The Bears and Roadrunners are playing only once this season, but it marks the 27th consecutive season in which they have played at least one game. The meeting is the 116th all-time in the series, which the Bears lead Northern Colorado has won six of its last 11 games after starting the season John Ray has hit safely in 16 of his last 20 games. Brennan Garr has hit.485 over his last 10 games and was named Division I Independent Player of the Week this past Tuesday for his performance last week. The Arkansas series marked the end of a streak of playing 23 of 27 games on the road for the Bears since the middle of February; the Bears are now playing 11 of 13 at home. The Bears started the season 0-7 before topping Kansas on Feb. 26. The 0-7 start was the worst in over 50 years for the program. The previous worse start had been 0-6 in 1975 (that team went on to win a conference championship). Senior All-American Phil Delich saw an 18-game hitting streak end in the seasonopener at Arizona; the steak dated back to his junior year in 2003 (he sat out last season with an injury). Delich has started 66 straight games. 2B Brad Baker set the school record for career at-bats (614) against Utah Valley State (Apr. 9). He recorded his 200th career hit at Creighton, becoming only the second person in school history to do that and is 11 hits away from the school record; he had started a school-record 129 straight games dating back to his freshman season before not starting at KU (Feb. 26). The Bears have been to 10 Division I College World Series, the last coming in the Bears closer, recording four saves so far this season. That is the fourth highest singleseason total in school history and already ranks him ninth on the career chart. The season record is seven (Josh Durant ) while the career mark is 8 (Greg Cook ). Garr saw his career-high nine-game hitting streak come to an end on April 5, when he was 0-for-1 and left the game early due to a concussion. He missed both games in the Utah Valley State series because of that injury. Pearson Tosses Back-to-Back Complete Games: After tossing the first complete game for the team in 366 days at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Mar. 27), sophomore Tyler Pearson repeated his feat, tossing seven innings and allowing only four hits and a run while striking out four against Southern Utah (Apr. 2). That stretch ended at No. 14 Arkansas, when he left the game after four innings. In his last three starts the Ukiah, Calif. native has struck out 13 and walked zero. In fact, he has not walked any of the last 78 batters which he was faced. He last walked a batter in the fourth inning at Creighton on March 20. Telitz Makes 52nd Career Appearance: Senior Angelo Telitz appeared in each game of the series at No. 14 Arkansas (Apr. 5-6), marking his 51st and 52nd career appearances. With the second appearance Telitz moved into fifth place on the Bears career list, moving out of a tie with Keith Bailey ( ). Bailey is now the head umpire in the Mountain West Conference and sometimes calls UNC games. Home Sweet Home: UNC is 4-5 at home this season after compiling a 15-6 at home last season. They have won 19 of 29 and 38 of its last 50 games at home dating back to The Bears held a 23-6 overall record at home and a 12-0 regular season mark against NCC teams in 2003, Coach Smallcomb s first at UNC (the Bears also posted a 14-game winning streak at Jackson Field and a 17-game winning streak against NCC schools). April Brings Wins: Although the Bears have struggled in February and March of this year, they should be looking forward to April. Friday - Not So Friendly: Although Tuesday has been kind to the Bears, they have not fared well on Friday s at all, compiling a 0-7 record on Friday s this season and have lost nine in-a-row on Friday s dating back to last year. UNC last won on a Friday on April 23, 2004, a 8-4 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. A game with TAMUCC (Apr. 22) is the next time the Bears will play on a Friday. (As of 4/10/05) Comebacks: The Bears got their first come-frombehind victory of the season on March 8 in game one of a doubleheader against Air Force. UNC trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning before exploding for six runs in that frame. The second came at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, when they trailed 9-4 entering the seventh but won They also registered a pair of comebacks in a doubleheader sweep at Southern Utah (Apr. 2), and one each against Air Force (Mar. 29) and Utah Valley State (Apr. 9). UNC now has 39 come-from-behind wins under head coach Kevin Smallcomb. In his two years with the program, the Bears came-from-behind to win 35 times, including 17 times in their final at-bat. In 2004, they came-from-behind 16 times and won 11 times in their final at-bat. Early Pains: The Bears had been outscored over the first three innings of their 35 games this year, including 41-7 in the first inning and 63-7 in the second inning. The team has also had trouble limiting big innings for opponents, as opponents have scored five-plus runs in an inning 12 different times this year. Offense Struggling: The Bears are hitting only.257 as a team this season through 35 games (although the team did raise its average 12 points at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the end of March). Last year the team hit.335 overall, which ranked third among all Division I teams. Bears Take First Series of the Season: With a pair of wins in three games over fellow Division I Independent Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Bears won their first season series of the year after previously being 0-7 on the year. The Bears lost the opener 7-1 to the Islanders but responded by winning (with five runs in the eighth inning) and The Bears and Islanders will play April in Greeley. Bears Against D-I Independents: Northern Colorado played its first games of the season against fellow Division I Independents when they took two of three games from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 6 Bears Take Two of Three From Southern Utah: After dropping the series opener at Southern Utah (Apr. 1), the Bears bounced back to take a doubleheader on April 2 and take the series 2-1. The Bears and Thunderbirds will play a second three-game set this series on May 7-8 in Greeley. Roller Coaster Hits: On March 18 against Creighton the Bears knocked out a season-high 18 hits, the most hits they have had since getting 21 versus Hawaii-Hilo on May 21 of last season. The Bears had a rough day of it the next day, managing a season-low three hits against the Bluejays, the second lowest total under Coach Smallcomb (trailing only the two hits against Fort Hays State in 2003). The scene repeated itself at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, when they again managed only three hits in the opener (Mar. 25) but responded with 32 hits over the final two games of the series. Shutout City: No. 11 ranked Arizona defeated the Bears 10-0 on Feb. 13, marking the first time UNC had been shutout since falling 2-0 at South Dakota State on April 21, 2003, a stretch of 69 games. The Bears were also shutout on March 13 at Washington State and on March 19 at Creighton. It marked only the sixth and seventh times in the team s last 229 games overall they had been shutout. The Bears did avoid back-to-back shutouts by scoring three times series finale versus CU. The Bears have not been shutout in back-to-back games since the 1986 season, a stretch of 915 games (following the Arkansas series). Linn Makes A Move to Starter: Junior pitcher Evan Linn was instrumental in the Bears 3-2 win over Kansas on Feb. 26. Linn, who had four saves in 2004 (fourth most in school history), was thrown into the starting rotation and made his first start against the Jayhawks. He pitched seven strong innings, allowing only five hits and an unearned run; he got a no-decision after the Bears allowed KU to tie it in the ninth although UNC won 3-2 in 10 innings. Linn made 17 total appearances in 2004, the sixth highest single-season total for a pitcher in program history. At Washington State on March 13, he had a perfect game through 4.2 innings and a no-hitter into the seventh inning before making way to the bullpen. He allowed only one hit and three runs in leading the Bears to a 4-3 victory as he picked up the victory, his first of the season. Extra Inning Success: The Bears topped Kansas 3-2 in 10 innings on Feb. 26 and then dropped the following game 9-8 in 11 innings, marking only their third extra inning game over the past two years (the Bears fell to Southern Utah in extra innings in 2004). UNC has, however, won 8 of their last 12 games that have gone longer than scheduled, dating back to the 2003 season. Bears Top Air Force Earlier This Season: The Bears and Air Force finally got to play this season (their season-opener was postponed due to snow) on March 8 when UNC swept a doubleheader by scores of 8-4 and 9-3. The Falcons and Bears split the second meeting of the year, with AFA winning game one 6-3 and UNC winning game two 15-6 on March 29. The Bears have now won 11 of the last 13 games against the Falcons and 13 of 16 since the series was renewed in The teams play two more times this season, April 19 at the Academy. Delich Returns From Injury; Sees 18-Game Hitting End: 2003 ABCA second-team All- American first baseman Phil Delich missed the 2004 season due to a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. He began the 2005 campaign with an 18-game hitting streak that dated back to his junior year. Unfortunately he did not get a hit in the first game of a doubleheader at No. 11 Arizona on Feb. 12, which ended the streak two shy of the school record (20 each by Scott Vatter in 1994 and Joe Bonacquista in 1962). Following the Arkansas series has hit safely in 51 of 61 games dating back to his junior year, and has started 66 games in-arow. In 2003, he hit.401 and broke a 21-year old school record for RBI in a season (73 - since broken by Patrick Perry). Bears Snap Skid: The Bears were in the midst of a seven-game losing streak (and nine of 10 overall), before beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 26. That equaled their longest losing streak of the season (they opened this season with seven straight losses). The longest prior losing streak before this year under Smallcomb had been four games, something done twice in each of his first two seasons. SEASON NOTES A Strong Tradition: With the move back to Division I, the UNC baseball program is no stranger to success at that level. The Bears have appeared in 10 Division I College World Series, including nine from From the Bears made six consecutive appearances, the second longest streak in CWS history (trailing only seven straight from by Oklahoma). The Bears were last in the CWS in the 1974 season. UNC has appeared at the CWS in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 and Bears Set Mark For Best Two-Year Stretch in School History: With a win over Hawaii-Hilo on May 17 of last season, the Bears assured themselves of their second straight winning season, the first time that has happened since Although they did come up one win short of producing the first back-to-back 30 wins seasons in school history (finishing with 29), their 63 victories over the past two years was the greatest total in school history, besting the 61 wins the 1994 and 1995 teams combined for (the 1994 team won a school record 35 games under Terry Hensley). Bears Third in Hitting, Eighth in Runs Scored Nationally Last Season: As a team last year, the Bears hit.335, which ranked third nationally behind Eastern Kentucky (.375) and the College of Charleston (.341). The Bears also scored a school-record 441 runs, which worked out to 8.5/game, and ranked in a tie for eighth in Division I. Bears Sign Six During Early Signing Period: Northern Colorado signed six student-athletes to national letters of intent during the fall signing period. Jason Banks (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ Hutchinson CC), Seth Gilleland (Moriarty, N.M./Lamar CC), Josh Payne (Amarillo, Texas/Clarendon JC), Tyler Robbins (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), Chad Steiner (Centennial, Colo./Lamar CC) and Nate Weidenaar (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) will all join the Bears team next season. Banks (6 0, 185, RHP) is currently the No. 1 starter at Hutchinson CC and played high school baseball at Highlands Ranch High. Gilleland (6 3, 200, RHP), compiled a 8-2 record and 2.29 ERA at Lamar last season and hit over.400 as a senior at Moriarty High. His JC teammate Steiner (5 11, 195, INF) graduated from Arapahoe in 2002 where he was a two-time all-state selection and led the state in home runs as a junior (12). He was an all-region pick at Lamar last season after hitting.382 with eight home runs and 70 RBI. Payne (6 1, 185, 1B) was a two-time all-state selection at Randall High and a All-WJCAC conference pick in junior college last year when he ranked third in the nation in hitting. Robbins (6 1, 185, INF) was a second-team all-state selection at Cherry Creek High as a junior and a team captain this season. Weidenaar (6 1, 185, OF) hit.429 with 85 hits and 34 stolen bases as a junior; he is the younger brother of current Bear Zach Weidenaar. Draftable: Three current Bears players have been drafted in Major League Baseball s Amateur Draft, but each chose to attend college instead. Junior Brad Beaman was selected in the 42nd round (pick No. 1254) of the 2002 draft by the Anaheim Angels, John Ray was selected in the 41st round (No. 1236) of the 2003 draft by the Atlanta Braves and freshman Zach Weidenaar was selected in the 48th round (No. 1407) of the 2003 draft by the Kansas City Royals. Ray Picked Top D-I Independent Player in Preseason Baseball America Season Preview: Sophomore John Ray was picked as the top player among Division I Independents in the preseason preview issue of Baseball America. Ray, who set the Northern Colorado freshman home run record as a freshman (12 long balls), was a D-I All-Independent selection last year after seeing most of his playing time as a DH. Ray hit.302 in 42 games and drove in 44 runs. As a team, the Bears were picked to finish second among the 12 D-I Independents ranked. UNC trailed only Dallas Baptist and were just ahead of third place Sacramento State. Perry Drafted by Red Sox: 2004 Division I Independent Player of the Year Patrick Perry was selected in the 7th round of the 2004 First-Year Player draft by the Boston Red Sox last summer, making him the highest draft pick in 18 years for the Bears program (since former Bear and current Nebraska coach Mike Anderson was selected No. 207 overall in 1986). Perry led all of Division I in batting (.478) and slugging (.844) last season (his first year with the program) and set school records for RBI (74), doubles (27), and total bases (157) and ranked second in a season in each hits (89) and slugging (.844). Perry played last summer with the Lowell Spinners and will report to spring training in late February when pitchers and catchers report. He is currently one of six former Bears playing in the minor leagues; the others are Trevor Allen (Casper Rockies), Curt Borland (Elmira Pioneers), Nathan Bright (Sioux Falls Canaries), Lance Rankin (Coastal Bend Aviators) and Shane Roberts (Elmira Pioneers). Forbes Going Strong: One of the most inspirational stories with the Bears program is hitting coach Chris Forbes. Besides being an outstanding coach (he helped the Bears hitters rank third in Division I in batting last season), as a cancer survivor he has been an inspiration off the diamond. Forbes was diagnosed with cancer in 1999 and is now in remission. He is active with both the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society and in the summer of 2004 he was part of the Climb 4 Hope team that trekked up Mt. McKinley to raise funding and awareness for Leukemia research. Forbes has been nominated for the 2005 Lance Armstrong Foundation s Spirit of Survivorship Award. The award recognizes a cancer survivor who demonstrates a resilient attitude toward his or her illness and inspires others to live MISC. 8 life to the fullest. Vaughn Returns to Bench: They say you can never go home again, but with pitching coach Bruce Vaughn that is not true. Vaughn was an all-star pitcher for the Bears from , compiling a school-record 0.35 ERA. From , he served as an assistant coach for the program under former coach Terry Hensley and returns to the bench in 2005 for his first year with Coach Smallcomb (and eighth year overall as an assistant at UNC). Slow Beginnings: Before a win over Kansas (Feb. 26), the Bears had started the season 0-7, the program s worst start in 50 years (year-by-year records prior to 1955 are not available). The start topped the 0-6 start of the 1975 team. The 1973 team started the year 0-8 but four of those were exhibitions, technically making their record 0-4. Both of those teams rebounded, however, to capture conference championships and finish with winning records. The Bears were 1-11 after being swept by New Mexico before winning two versus Air Force. Big Crowds: Although not that many people were at the game, April 5 & 6 s attendance at Arkansas was listed as 6,008 (which included season-ticket sales and tickets bought by fans who did not show up due to poor weather). That was the largest crowd, by far, of the season for the Bears and one of the largest announced crowds in school history. The actual attendance for those games was listed as 1,324. Mile High Sports Magazine Recognizes Bears: In the April edition of Mile High Sports Magazine, the editors gave the Bears some love, listing them twice under 25 Reasons to Be Excited About Baseball Season. The program was listed at No. 15 (for having preseason All-Independent pick John Ray) and No. 21 (for having a great baseball tradition and playing in 10 College World Series). First Meeting With Arkansas and an SEC Team: When the Bears played at No. 14 Arkansas (Apr. 5-6), it marked the first time in school history the Bears had played Arkansas and the first time they had ever played a team from the Southeastern Conference, one of the premier baseball conferences in the country. The game was sort of a homecoming for Bears head coach Kevin Smallcomb, who served as a graduate assistant with the Razorback program in The Bears and Hogs are scheduled to play in April of next season as well. Garr Named D-I Independent Player of the Week: Sophomore 3B/RHP Brennan Garr was named Division I Independent Player of the Week on April 5 after having an incredible week. In five games, Garr hit.476 (10-21), with five runs scored, two doubles, a home run, five RBI, a.714 slugging percentage and a.476 on-base percentage in leading the Bears to a 3-2 record. He was 2-for-4 in game one of a doubleheader against Air Force before going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBI, a double and home run in the nightcap against the Falcons. Garr also left third base and came into the game to pitch, getting the Bears out of a late jam, earning his third save of the season in that second game. He had a hit in each of the three games at Southern Utah to extend his hitting streak to a career-high nine games. Garr also saved the final game at Southern Utah to reach his fourth save of the season. It marked the second consecutive week a Bears player was named Player of the Week, as catcher John Ray had won the previous week. Perry Gets First Win in a Calendar Year: Senior Bobby Perry was fantastic in relief at Southern Utah (Apr. 2), pitching 5.1 innings and allowing only one hit and one run while striking out four and walking zero in picking up his first victory of the season. It was his first victory since beating Air Force 10-4 on March 13, After hitting the first batter he faced, Perry retired the next 15 batters in-a-row before allowing a solo home run in the ninth. Ray Named D-I Independent Player of the Week: Sophomore catcher John Ray had struggled the first part of the season, seeing his battling average below.200 for a long stretch. He came alive at the end of March and was named D-I Independent Player of the Week on March 29 after he terrorized Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, hitting.615 (8-13) against the Islanders and driving in seven runs in leading the Bears to a 2-1 series victory. He had the go-ahead double in the Bears comefrom-behind victory over the Islanders during the week. Pac-10 Win: The Bears snapped a nine-game losing streak to Pac-10 Conference schools on March 13, defeating Washington State 4-3 in Pullman. The win was the first over a Pac-10 team since defeating Arizona 6-2 on June 1, 1974 in Greeley, a game that clinched the District 7 Championship and advanced the Bears to the 1974 College World Series. The three games with Arizona and three with Washington State this year were the first against Pac-10 teams since losing to Washington State in the 1975 NCAA Playoffs. Big 12 Win: UNC s 3-2 win over Kansas (Feb. 26) was their first over a Big 12 opponent since topping Iowa State at the beginning of the 1998 season. Iowa State no longer fields a varsity baseball team. Chacon Has Career Day: Senior Jarrod Chacon had a career day on March 8 in a doubleheader against Air Force. Chacon was 6-for-7 on the day with a run scored, five RBI and combined for the cycle in the two games, banging out three singles, a double, triple and home run. His home run to lead off the sixth inning of game one brought the Bears to within a run and sparked a come-from-behind victory. In game two, Chacon recorded his first triple in a Bears uniform. After the game was complete he had raised his batting average from.217 to Games in 10 Days: After finishing the series at Creighton on March 20, the Bears finished a stretch of nine games in 10 days, as they only had off Monday, March 14, a day they flew from Washington (where they played Washington State) to Denver and then bussed to Lincoln, Neb. (where they played Nebraska before playing at Creighton). Nebraska Woes: When the Bears schedule games for next season, they may want to avoid the state of Nebraska. Following three-game sweeps to Nebraska and Creighton in March, the Bears have lost eight games in-a-row to teams from the Cornhusker State. Overall they have lost 11 of 13 and 15 of 18 games to teams from Nebraska dating back to the 2001 season. Home Openers: The Bears lost their 2005 home-opening series to Creighton by a 0-3 margin, as the Bluejays swept by the Bears. In marked the first-time the team had been beaten in a true home-opening series since 2001, when Mesa State won 2-of-3 from the Bears (although UNC won its home-opener versus Regis to start that season, but it was only a single-game). The sweep in the home-opening series was the first since the 1999 season when the Bears were swept by Colorado Mines (and later Mesa State and Minnesota State) in a two-game set; the Bears began that season 0-10 at home. Bears and Lobos Meet: When the Bears played at New Mexico (March 4-5), it was only the third time since 1969 that the teams had played. The squads faced off once in 2003 before playing the three-game set this year. Bears and Wildcats Meet for First Time in 29 Years: Northern Colorado and Arizona played on Feb , marking the first time the teams had played since the 1975 season. Although Arizona now leads the series 32-3 all-time, there have been some interesting meetings in the series, including in the 1955 College World Series and in the 1974 District 7 Playoffs, where the Bears knocked off then No. 1 Arizona to advance to the College World Series.
