4 All-Star Candidate - Brennan Garr Junior - RHP/3B - Arvada, Colo BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST MEMBER Had a breakout year in 2005, leading the team in both hitting and saves and being one of the best all-around players in the region and among D-I Independents... tied the school s single-season save record and is now only one save away from tying the career mark after only one year as a closer... wore No. 35 his first two years at Northern Colorado before switching to No. 8 this season. 2005: Division I All-Independent first-team selection and runner-up for D-I Independent Player of the Year honors... appeared in 51 total games, starting 46 contests, 41 at third base and five as the designated hitter... made 15 appearances on the mound as the Bears closer, including 12 games in which he was both a batter and later entered the game to pitch... proved to be the team s MVP, as he not only led the team in hitting but tied the school s single-season record for saves (7), a stat that led all D-I Independents... also led team in slugging percentage and on-base percentage and was second on the team in hits, home runs and total bases and third in runs, doubles and RBI... hit.351 (13-for-37) with 11 RBI and was 1-1 with a pair of saves in nine total games against D-I Independents named co-mvp (along with Phil Delich) of the Division I Independent Invitational after hitting a pair of home runs and driving in an event-high six runs and also recording a save on the mound as the Bears won the team championship... on the mound, not only tied the single-season saves record (something he did on May 20 against South Dakota State) but is now only one away from the career mark... recorded saves against Washington State (where he hit 96 mph on the radar gun), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, two against Air Force, two against Southern Utah and South Dakota State... allowed only three of 10 total inherited runners to score... three wins (against Kansas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Southern Utah) were second most on the team, despite pitching only 16.2 total innings... gave up earned runs in only three of his 15 appearances... struck out 15 (including the side at New Mexico) and walked only seven; had a 8.13 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio... most impressive performances came when he played third and then entered late to pitch... was 3-for-6 including a two-out, two-rbi single in the Bears final at-bat at Air Force (Apr. 19) as Bears came from behind to win 6-5; after scoring the game-tying run went to bullpen to warmup and then entered the game in the bottom of the inning as the pitcher to record the save... earlier in the season against Air Force (Mar. 29) was 4-for-4 at the plate, including a home run and double, then came into contest and got Bears out of a bases loaded jam and recorded a save... was a combined 6-for-8 in the doubleheader against Air Force then recorded second save of the week against Southern Utah to earn D-I Independent Player of the Week honors (Apr. 5)... for the season against Air Force hit.643 (9-for-14) with six runs, six RBI, a.929 slugging percentage and two saves... after slow start offensively (he was hitting only.190 on March 17) put together hitting streak of 9, 10 and 7 games in hitting safely in 21 of 23 and 30 of 33 games to end the season and raise hit batting average to as high was.378 (almost 200 points higher than where it was at the middle of March)... nine-game hit streak ended at No. 14 Arkansas, where he suffered a concussion after getting hit in the head with a ball at third base; he did remain in to bat once after being injury, but hard hit ball was caught ended the streak... after missing three games with the concussion, returned to record the 10-game hitting streak which was his career-long... returned to field following concussion against Metro State (Apr. 13), going 4-for-6 with five RBI and a pair of home runs in the 20-2 victory... was 2-for-5 with a key two-run home run and four RBI in 8-5 upset victory at Wichita State (May 10)... was 4-for-5 with three runs scored against Southern Utah (May 7) and also picked up the save in that contest... was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBI in a 12-7 victory over BYU (Apr. 26)... named Northern Colorado Male Student-Athlete of the Month for April after hitting.438 (21-for-48) with four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI in 12 games while also compiling a 1-1 record, 3.86 ERA and two saves in 4.2 innings of work... had 19 multi-hit and nine multi-rbi games, which ranked second on the team in both categories; had 11 multi-hit games in his last 21 overall contests hit.321 (17-for-53) with eight RBI in 15 games against teams that made the 2005 NCAA Tournament... hit.447 (34- for-76) in the team s 22 wins this season... hit.457 (32-for-70) with 22 RBI in 17 games at Jackson Field... played summer baseball with the Brainerd (Minn.) Blue Thunder of the Northwoods League. 2004: Coming off redshirt season, became Bears regular third baseman, playing in 40 games, starting one of 12 UNC players who hit above hit first of three home runs on the season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 21), going 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI... also left the park at Sacramento State (May 14) and against New York Tech (May 21)... versus NYIT, was 1-2 with a run and a season-high two RBI... also had two RBI at Southern Utah (Mar. 19)... had a pair of two-hit games at No. 19 Nebraska (Apr ), going 4-7 with two runs scored in the series... also saw action on the mound, pitching in relief three times during the season... pitched two innings versus Air Force (May 16) striking out two, 1.2 innings versus Minnesota (Mar. 28) and an inning against Hawaii-Hilo (May 22). 2003: Redshirted... served as a scoreboard operator for home games, making him arguably one of the most talented scoreboard operators in the country. Prior to UNC: Attended Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Ariz. but transferred before playing in a game. 5 All-Star Candidate - John Ray Junior - C - Louisville, Colo. In two years with the program, has proven to be one of the top home run hitters in the country, and one of the best in school history. Averages a home run every 14.8 at-bats (340 at-bats/23 home runs) and after two seasons is only one home run away from joining the school career top-10 list, after breaking the freshman home run record (12) his freshman season... wore No. 17 his first two seasons at Northern Colorado before switching to No. 5 this year. 2005: Division I All-Independent first-team selection... played in 55 of 56 total games, starting 54 of those contests, 47 at catcher and seven at designated hitter... was named the preseason D-I Independent Player of the Year by Baseball America... batted 191 times, the 10th highest single-season total in school history... despite struggling with his average, still had a great season as he led the team in home runs and walks, was second in doubles and RBI, third in runs and total bases and fourth in hits and committed only one error behind the plate in 260 chances (.996 fielding percentage)... threw out 17 runners who attempted to steal... ranked sixth among independents in home runs per game (0.20)... hit.300 (12-for-40) with two home runs, 12 RBI and nine runs scored in 11 games against D-I Independents... named D-I Independent Player of the Week twice during the season (March 29 & May 10)... earned the award the first time after hitting.615 (8-for-13) with seven RBI in a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; in that series had a two-run game-winning double in the eighth inning that capped a seven-run rally and helped turn the Bears season around (UNC was after that game, only 4-21 before the contest)... earned other Player of the Week honor after hitting.455 (5-for-11) with three runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and a slugging percentage in a three-game set with Southern Utah... in that series with SUU, hit a game-tying solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning in the opener, as Bears overcame 8-0 deficit to win 9-8 in 10 innings; in second game of series smashed a the game-winning three-run blast in the Bears final at-bat in putting the Bears on top for good in a game they trailed 5-1 and won has hit four home runs in two seasons against Southern Utah, with three of them being either game-winning or game-tying blasts... hit-by-pitch to start 10th inning at Air Force (Apr. 19) and came around to score game-winning run; did not have a hit in that game but did score three times... hit a fifth inning home run at Washington State (Mar.13), a blast that proved to be the game-winner... after not homering in 25 at-bats, blasted the first pitch he saw against BYU (Apr. 27), a ball that went an estimated 440 feet... including home runs against BYU and Southern Utah, had a streak of home runs in three straight games... drove in a season-high five RBI on four hits in win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Mar. 27)... hit in 15 of 17 games during a stretch in the month of March, raising his batting average by over.150 points... had 11 multi-hit and seven multi-rbi games and a long hitting streak of seven games... hit three home runs and drove in nine runs in 18 games against teams that made the 2005 NCAA Tournament... hit.299 (23-for-77 with 23 RBI in the Bears 22 wins during the year... played summer baseball with the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks in the Alaskan League. 2004: Division I All-Independent first-team selection... played in 45 games, starting set UNC freshman record for home runs with 12 roundtrippers, breaking Steve Thomas 17-year old record of finished second on the team in total home runs but led all Independents in home runs per game (0.27)... finished third among Independents in RBI (0.98/game)... hit a home run every 12.4 at-bats during the season... had a seasonhigh 12-game hitting streak and a streak of four consecutive games with a home run that ran from Apr. 28 at No. 19 Nebraska until May 8 at Sacramento State... had 13 multi-hit and 12 multi-rbi games... terrorized Southern Utah pitching during the season; hit a three-run, walk-off home run off reliever Nick Oldroyd on Feb. 16 and then a final inning grand slam off Oldroyd on Mar. 20 after the Craig Troxell was walked intentionally to load the bases for Ray... was 2-5 with two runs scored, a double and a three-run homer against Utah Valley State (May 1)... drove in a season-high four RBI five times during the year, against Air Force (Mar. 16), Southern Utah (Mar. 20), Utah Valley State (May 1), Sacramento State (May 4) and Hawaii-Hilo (May 17), all games in which he homered... had a season-high three hits versus Southern Utah (Feb. 16)... saw time behind the plate in 18 games with the rest of his action at the designated hitter spot... threw out 10 of 26 runners who tried to steal against him... did not commit an error in 120 chances in the field... played summer ball with the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League; was able to go with teammates one day and taking batting practice at Fenway Park.
