Boshamer Stadium Carolina Long Beach State All-time Series...LBSU leads 2-1 TAR HEELS HOST DIRTBAGS FOR FINAL NON-CONFERENCE WEEKEND No. 7 North Carolina starts its final non-conference weekend series of the year Friday at 3 p.m. when the Tar Heels welcome Long Beach State for the first of three at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina is 8-1 after splitting a pair of midweek games with Winthrop and No. 16 St. John s. LBSU is 4-4 following a 6-2 loss to San Diego State on Tuesday. NORTH CAROLINA-LONG BEACH STATE SERIES HISTORY Carolina is 1-2 all-time against Long Beach State, and this weekend will mark the first regular season games in the series since LBSU beat Carolina twice in the 2014 NCAA Gainesville Regional to eliminate the Tar Heels. The Dirtbags only previous visit to Chapel Hill came in Carolina scored a 7-6 win over LBSU at Boshamer Stadium. MIDWEEK NOTES Tyler Baum impressed in his first career outing as the freshman right-hander allowed just two hits in 5.2 scoreless innings against Winthrop. A native of Ocoee, Florida, Baum struck out six and issued just one walk to earn the win. Taylor Sugg and Bo Weiss also made their 2017 debuts against the Eagles on Tuesday. Sugg struck out two in a scoreless eighth before Weiss worked a scoreless ninth to seal the victory. Logan Warmoth matched his career high with four RBIs against Winthrop. The junior shortstop hit his first home run of the year and added a three-run double later in the game. Josh Ladowski made his first career start on Wednesday and delivered a pair of hits and an RBI. The sophomore from Mooresville, North Carolina, was limited to seven games due to injury in TAR HEELS STRIKING EARLY Through nine games, the 2017 Tar Heels are 8-1 and have outscored opponents by 34 runs (58-24). Carolina has been especially potent early in games, outscoring foes 28-9 in the first three innings and scoring first in seven of nine contests. In just his second career start, Dalatri struck out 15 batters with no walks in a 7-5 win over Radford. The freshman from Wall Township, New Jersey, threw just 99 pitches with 75 strikes, and went to a 3-ball count just one time in 28 batters. The 15 strikeouts are the most by a Tar Heel pitcher since Matt Harvey struck out 15 at Clemson in 2010, and are the most for a North Carolina freshman under Mike Fox (since 1999). WARMOTH PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF With hits in both midweek games, junior Logan Warmoth extended his streak of reaching base to 24 games dating back to his hot finish to He has also hit safely in 16 consecutive contests. In wins over Gardner-Webb and Radford last week, Warmoth hit.438 with four runs scored and four RBIs. He stole five bases on five attempts, including a career-best three stolen bases in Sunday s win. After posting a slash line of.466/.528/.724 over the final 15 games of last season, Warmoth is hitting a team-best.429 in 2017 with a.475 OBP and a.714 SLG%. HIATT LEADS COLLEGE BASEBALL IN SAVES Redshirt freshman Josh Hiatt, in his first work as a Tar Heel, tallied three saves in three days against Kentucky to open the season. For the entire 2016 season, Carolina (34-21) registered just four total saves. Hiatt added two more saves in the series win over Radford to give him five in five chances. That total leads all of college baseball so far in BUKAUSKAS, MILLER RECEIVE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS, GOLDEN SPIKES NOD North Carolina juniors J.B. Bukauskas and Brian Miller received almost universal praise from the national baseball media as preseason All-Americans entering the 2017 season. Bukauskas is a consensus first-team All-America pick as a starting pitcher, earning accolades from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball, the NCBWA and Perfect Game. Miller was a second-team choice by a majority of those same outlets. Bukauskas returns for his third season in Chapel Hill after going 7-2 with a 3.10 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 78.1 innings of work last spring. He followed up a strong sophomore season at Carolina with a spectacular summer with the USA Collegiate National Team, posting a 0.00 ERA in 21.2 innings of work. He allowed just seven hits and one unearned run for the CNT, striking out 21 and walking just three. Miller hit a team-best.345 as a sophomore, also posting team highs of 78 hits, 56 runs and 21 stolen bases. The junior speedster also had an exemplary summer season, earning Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star honors for the Orleans Firebirds. Miller hit.327 for the summer, third-best on the Cape, and his 15 stolen bases were also third among players in the league. In addition to the various preseason All-America teams, both Bukauskas and Miller were named to the initial USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award 55-player watch list. 3 school baseball. In recent years, Colin Moran (2013), Dustin Ackley (2009), Andrew Miller (2006) and Russ Adams (2002) were finalists for the award. ROBUST BROADCAST SCHEDULE SET FOR CAROLINA BASEBALL The North Carolina baseball team will have a record 47 games televised this spring thanks to an expanded offering from the ACC Network. A total of 37 home contests will be broadcast, including the series finale with Miami on March 26, which will be televised by the ACC Regional Sports Network. With the expansion of the ACC Network Extra, a total of 25 of Carolina s 30 league contests will be available for streaming via the ESPN app and on WatchESPN.com, including all 15 home league games. In addition to those conference games, another 21 non-conference tilts will be streamed on the service. The 2017 ACC Baseball Championship, set for May in Louisville, Kentucky, will be televised in its entirety, with games on Tuesday through Saturday on RSN and Sunday s championship on ESPN2. TAR HEELS PICKED AS COASTAL FAVORITES IN ACC PRESEASON POLL Florida State has been selected as the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference baseball preseason favorite in a vote of the league s 14 head coaches, while North Carolina was picked as the favorite in the Coastal Division. The Seminoles were picked by 10 coaches as the team to beat in the conference. Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, and NC State also had one vote for overall conference champion. Florida State led the way in the Atlantic Division with 93 points, followed by Louisville (79), Clemson (66), NC State (64), Wake Forest (38), and Boston College and Notre Dame (26). Six coaches picked North Carolina to win the Coastal Division, while Virginia (4), Miami (3), and Georgia Tech (1) also had first place votes. The Tar Heels picked up 86 points, ahead of Virginia (84), Miami (77), Georgia Tech (59), Duke (40), Virginia Tech (26), and Pitt (20). Carolina has been picked to win the Coastal six times since the poll went to the divisional system in On four of the previous five occasions (2007, 2009, 2012 and 2013), the Tar Heels did in fact win the division crown. ACKLEY S NO. 13 RETIRED Former Carolina great and 2009 Rivals.com National Player of the Year Dustin Ackley had his No. 13 retired in a ceremony during the UNC-Virginia Tech basketball game on Jan. 26 at the Dean E. Smith Center. Ackley became the fourth player in program history to receive this unique honor, joining Dave Lemonds, B.J. Surhoff and Andrew Miller. A native of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, Ackley hit.417 with 22 home runs, 75 runs and 73 RBIs in his junior season of 2009 en route to player of the year accolades. He was named ACC Player of the Year and added consensus All-America and first-team All-ACC honors while leading Carolina to its fourth consecutive College World Series appearance. During the 2009 CWS, Ackley recorded his 28th career hit in Omaha to become the all-time hits leader at college baseball s signature event. Ackely is the only three-time All-American in school history and left UNC with career records for batting average (.412), hits (346), runs (227) and total bases. He won UNC s Patterson Medal as the school s top male student-athlete and was selected No. 2 overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 MLB Draft. Ackley made his major league debut on June 17, 2011, and has played in parts of six seasons with the Mariners and the New York Yankees. TAR HEEL FRESHMEN RANK NO. 2 IN BASEBALL AMERICA RECRUITING POLL North Carolina was ranked No. 2 nationally in Baseball America s annual recruiting class rankings, the publication announced in October. Led by six members of the BA500, the No. 2 ranking is the highest for the Tar Heels since placing No. 1 overall in Only No. 1 pick Ole Miss had more top-500 prospects than Carolina, which saw all six of its ranked freshmen place among the top 208 nationally. RHP Tyler Baum leads the way as the No. 91 overall prospect. He is joined in the top 200 by fellow right-handed pitchers Austin Bergner (165), Luca Dalatri (174), Robbie Peto (179) and Bo Weiss (183). Catcher Brandon Martorano, who teamed with Dalatri at Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey as a prep, rounds out the Tar Heels at No Five of the six Carolina freshmen in the rankings were drafted in the 2016 MLB Draft - Weiss (Yankees, 29th round), Peto (Angels, 30th round), Martorano (Diamondbacks, 30th round), Bergner (Red Sox, 38th round) and Dalatri (Rockies, 40th round). Fox was a three-year letterwinner at UNC as a second baseman from , helping lead the Tar Heels to the 1978 College World Series. As a senior, he hit.277, tied for the team lead with six home runs and was named to the CWS all-tournament team. Fox also played on the Tar Heel junior varsity basketball team under Eddie Fogler in the 1975 and 76 seasons. Former UNC athletic director Dick Baddour brought Fox back to Chapel Hill in 1999, and over the last 18 seasons Fox has established a high standard of success, averaging nearly 45 wins per season and guiding the Tar Heels to 50 or more victories five times, including a school-record 59 in One of only six men to play in and then coach his alma mater in the College World Series, Fox has led Carolina to 15 postseason trips, including an incredible run of six CWS appearances in eight years from Fox, who has coached UNC to 15 College World Series victories, has either played or coached in all 17 of Carolina s CWS wins. Overall, a total of 83 Tar Heels to play for Fox over the past 18 years have been drafted by Major League Baseball organizations, including 11 first-round or supplemental selections. Thirty of Fox s former Tar Heels were on professional rosters in 2016, including four players whose teams advanced to the MLB playoffs. Took a tough-luck no-decision against Radford on Feb. 24 after going seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts and just one walk. Opened his junior season with a stellar outing, striking out 10 over six shutout innings in a win over Kentucky on Feb. 17. Finished 7-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 13 starts as Carolina s Saturday starter in Ranks as the nation s top returning pitcher in strikeouts per nine innings; finished 2016 with 111 strikeouts in 78.1 innings (12.75 K/9), third-best nationally.
