UNC is in the postseason under Mike Fox. The Tar Heels enter the tournament as a national seed for the seventh time (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013) and the first since earning the No. 1 overall seed in The No. 2 seed matches the 2008 squad for the highest seed in program history. UNC is 31-7 all-time as a host in the postseason, including a 21-5 mark in the regional round. The Tar Heels have won seven regional titles in the current format and six (including the 2008 NCAA Cary Regional) have come at home. Carolina is hosting a regional for the ninth time in its history and the eighth time since The Tar Heels are 25-4 all-time in their opening game of the tournament, with the only losses coming in 1982, 1993, 1998 and Since the NCAA moved to the current postseason format in 1999, UNC is in the regional round. Carolina enters the NCAA tournament with 47 wins. Only the 1990 (49), 2007 (48) and 2013 (52) teams had more prior to NCAA play. QUICK HITS Carolina ranks second in the ACC and fifth nationally in pitching with a staff ERA of Only six teams in the country have a sub-3.00 staff ERA. J.B. Bukauskas, Tyler Lynn, Ashton McGee, Brian Miller and Logan Warmoth were each named to the ACC All-Tournament team. After taking two of three over Duke, UNC won all 10 of its ACC series for the first time in program history. The 2008 team previously held the school record for most league series wins at UNC with nine (9-0-1). The Tar Heels 20-0 win over the Hokies on May 14 established a new school record for most runs in an ACC shutout win, eclipsing a 19-0 victory at Virginia in It was also the program s biggest league victory since a 25-4 win over Duke in Carolina became the first team to sweep Clemson and Florida State in the same season since 2004, when Georgia Tech did the same double. No other team has swept both the Tigers and the Seminoles since FSU joined the ACC. The Tar Heels swept Florida State for the second time in program history and the first time ever in Tallahassee. UNC started ACC play with series wins over divisional foes Virginia, Georgia Tech and Miami. That marked the first time the Tar Heels won series against those three in the same season since Juniors Brian Miller and Logan Warmoth recently reached career milestones with their 50th multi-hit games at UNC. Both also reached 200 career hits at the ACC Championship. Warmoth has 207 and Miller has 203 entering the NCAA tournament. Redshirt freshman closer Josh Hiatt has 13 saves, second in the ACC and 10th nationally. Hiatt is already alone in fifth on the UNC single-season saves list. Junior J.B. Bukauskas ranks in the top 20 nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (11th, 5.66) and strikeouts (19th, 111). He was named to the D1Baseball and Rawlings/Perfect Game Midseason All-America first teams, earning Midseason Top Pitcher honors from D1Baseball. Carolina allowed five runs or fewer in each of the first 23 games of the 2017 season. That was the longest such streak in 106 seasons. The Tar Heels went 25 straight without allowing more than five across the 1910 and 1911 campaigns. Mike Fox recorded his 800th win at Carolina on Feb. 19 against Kentucky. He is UNC s all-time winningest coach and has over 1,300 total wins in his 34 year career. 5 2017 North Carolina GoHeels.com BUKAUSKAS, McGEE LEAD ACC HONOREES J.B. Bukauskas was named ACC Pitcher of the Year and Ashton McGee was voted ACC Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league s coaches. Bukauskas helped UNC to the ACC Coastal Division crown with an 8-0 regular season record while striking out 106 batters and walking only 31 in 82 innings. McGee also played a key role in the Tar Heels season, leading the team with a.339 regular season average with six home runs and 39 RBIs. Bukauskas is the fourth Tar Heel to earn ACC Pitcher of the Year honors, and the first since Kent Emanuel got the nod in Alex White (2008) and Andrew Miller (2006) also earned the league s top pitching award. McGee is the sixth Carolina rookie to grab ACC Freshman of the Year, joining Colin Moran (2011), Dustin Ackley (2007), Daniel Bard (2004), Adam Greenberg (2000) and Brian Roberts (1997). Bukauskas, Josh Hiatt, Brian Miller and Logan Warmoth were first-team All-ACC selections. Carolina s total of four first-team selections is the most for the program since the 1985 Tar Heels also placed four players on the first team. McGee and Gianluca Dalatri were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. BUKAUSKAS, WARMOTH EARN FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICA HONORS The first of this season s All-America lists dropped Thursday and junior standouts J.B. Bukauskas and Logan Warmoth were among those selected by Collegiate Baseball. Bukauskas has been one of the nation s best pitchers in The right-hander from Ashburn, Virginia, is 9-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 14 starts. He has struck out 111 batters and walked just 33 while limiting opponents to a.180 batting average. Warmoth has emerged as an elite shortstop in his third season as a Tar Heel. A native of Orlando, Florida, Warmoth leads Carolina in batting average (.349), slugging (.569), hits (89), home runs (9), doubles (19), triples (5), and runs (59). Bukauskas was also named one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award by USA Baseball. Both Bukauskas and Warmoth were named finalists for College Baseball Foundation awards - Bukauskas for Pitcher of the Year and Warmoth for the Brooks Wallace Award (top shortstop). WINNING WITH DEFENSE Carolina s resurgence in 2017 has occured in tandem with a return to playing outstanding defense. The Tar Heels are currently fielding.979 as a team, a mark that would be the highest for UNC since the 2011 squad fielded a school-record.979. For the season, Carolina has played error-free baseball in 29 games, and the Tar Heels are 27-2 in those contests. UNC is when committing a miscue. On the flip side, Tar Heel opponents have committed at least two errors in 27 games, and UNC is 25-2 in those instances. BUKAUSKAS ROLLS INTO CAREER STRIKEOUTS TOP 10 With a first-inning strikeout on March 3 vs. Long Beach State, junior J.B. Bukauskas reached 200 strikeouts for his UNC career. After striking out five against NC State on May 26, Bukauskas now has 289 career Ks, tied for fifth in UNC history with Michael Hoog. Only Andrew Miller (325), Benton Moss (318), Alex White (317) and Patrick Johnson (311) left Carolina with more strikeouts. The Ashburn, Virginia, right-hander has tallied 111 strikeouts in each of the last two seasons, the 10th-most strikeouts in a single season in Carolina history. He is just the fourth Tar Heel in the last 20 years to record at least 111 Ks in a season, joining Andrew Miller (133 in 2006), Patrick Johnson (125 in 2011) and Alex White (121 in 2009 and 113 in 2008). HIATT THRIVING IN PRIME BULLPEN ROLE Redshirt freshman Josh Hiatt, in his first work as a Tar Heel, tallied three saves in three days against Kentucky to open the season. For the entire 2016 season, Carolina (34-21) registered just four total saves. Hiatt now has 13 saves in 16 chances. The Charlotte right-hander has a 2.09 ERA in 31 appearances and is limiting opponents to a.167 batting average. In 47.1 innings of work, Hiatt has 60 strikeouts (11.41 K/9). Hiatt was even better in ACC play. In 17 regular season appearances, Hiatt finished with a league-best 0.29 ERA, was 3-0 with seven saves, and had 36 strikeouts to 10 walks in 30.2 innings. Hiatt was recently one of 40 pitchers nationally named to the 2017 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List.
