The 16th-ranked Tar Heels will send junior right-hander Zac Gallen to the mound in the opener against fellow junior Grant Dyer in what figures to be one of the top Opening Day pitching showdowns nationally. The series continues Saturday at 5 ET (2 PT) and concludes Sunday afternoon at 4 ET (1 PT). NORTH CAROLINA-UCLA SERIES HISTORY North Carolina is 6-4 all-time against UCLA, including a 5-4 mark under head coach Mike Fox. Last season, UCLA won two of three from the Tar Heels in Orlando. The series was originally scheduled for Chapel Hill, but winter weather forced the teams to relocate to Florida. Prior to last season, two programs met in the 2013 College World Series when the Bruins won 4-1 on their way to the NCAA title. Carolina and UCLA played a home-and-home regular season series in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The Tar Heels scored a three-game sweep in Los Angeles in 2000 before the two teams split a pair of games in Chapel Hill in The only other meeting in the series came in the 1993 NCAA tournament. UNC defeated UCLA 8-5 in an elimination game in College Station, Texas. CAROLINA IN CALIFORNIA The Tar Heels have made a number of trips to the Golden State over the years, including the most recent visit in In 2011, Carolina was a perfect 4-0 in southern California. The Tar Heels beat Cal Poly, Missouri and USC to win the Trojans tournament. They also scored a 4-3 win at Cal State- Fullerton in 11 innings on the trip. Prior to 2011, UNC s last visit to the west coast was the three-game sweep of UCLA in That trip came on the heels of two California visits in Mike Fox s first season in charge. The Tar Heels went 1-2 at the NCAA Palo Alto Regional to close the 1999 campaign after a 5-1 performance at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno in early March. CAROLINA BASEBALL SET FOR BUSY TV SCHEDULE The 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference baseball broadcast schedule was announced in early February, and North Carolina will be featured 26 times across ESPNU, ESPN3 and RSN. In addition to Carolina s 26 appearances as part of the ACC television package, at least 17 home games will be streamed live by GoHeelsTV and the April 12 game vs. South Carolina in Charlotte will appear on the SEC Network. The Tar Heels will appear on ESPNU on Monday, May 16, against Notre Dame as part of the network s ACC Monday package. Carolina will also host Louisville on Saturday, May 7, on the ACC Regional Sports Network. Eleven of UNC s 13 remaining conference home games will be broadcast by ESPN3, as well as road series at Duke, Miami and Wake Forest. The 2016 ACC Baseball Championship, held May in Durham, North Carolina, will be televised in its entirety, with games on Tuesday through Saturday on RSN and Sunday s championship on ESPN2. TAR HEELS PICKED THIRD IN COASTAL North Carolina enters the 2016 season picked to finish third in the ACC Coastal behind Miami and Virginia. Louisville has been selected as the 2016 preseason favorite in a vote of the league s 14 head coaches. The Cardinals were a unanimous selection as the team to beat in both the Atlantic Division and in the conference ACC Champion Florida State was picked second in the division with 74 points, followed by NC State (72 points), Notre Dame (50), Clemson (46), Wake Forest (35), and Boston College (17). Miami, which reached the College World Series last year, was named by 13 coaches as the likely Coastal Division winner. Defending national champion Virginia received one vote for first place in the division and was second with 80 points, followed by North Carolina (71), Georgia Tech (58), Duke (38), Virginia Tech (30), and Pitt (18). MILLER S NO. 33 RETIRED Former North Carolina pitcher Andrew Miller became the third player in progam history to have his number retired, with Chancellor Carol Folt and Senior Associate A.D. Larry Gallo presenting his No. 33 jersey in a ceremony on Jan. 30 at the Dean E. Smith Center. Miller, a 10-year MLB veteran, joins Dave Lemonds and B.J. Surhoff as Tar Heels who have received this unique honor. Miller was the 2006 Baseball America National Player of the Year and Roger Clemens Award winner after finishing 12-3 with a 2.48 ERA as a junior. The native of Gainesville, Florida, helped Carolina to its first College World Series appearance since 1989 and sparked an unprecendented run of success for UNC baseball. Miller and his teammates from the 2006 team were honored at the annual First Pitch Dinner on Jan. 30. This season marks the 10-year anniversary of that incredible team.
