1 You don t stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing! February 2016 The BATTER UP Newsletter is published for the Sun Cities Senior Softball League, and is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors. Lorali Holt Editor lholt1019@comcast.net WHO S ON DECK? ~ S U N C I T I E S C E N T R A L L E A G U E W E L C O M E S S T E V E G L A V I A N O ~ Steve Glaviano isn t just the new kid on the block, having moved to Sun City just under a year ago, he is also new to the game of softball, Like so many of us facing retirement, Steve and his wife Louisa wanted to find a place in the sun where they could be warm, active, and outdoors. After an online search of places that might work for them, Steve contacted a realtor, arrived in the great state of Arizona for the very first time in his life, and the rest is history. The Glavianos quickly became homeowners in Sun City, a huge contrast to their previous home and lifestyle in the Philadelphia area, where Steve has lived for most of his 58 years of life. When I asked Steve what his occupation had been, he responded with a funny smile and said he had been a cook. But not just any cook as I found out, but more of a manufacturing mixologist for a small oil company, using secret formulas and base oils to create new products. Louisa, Steve s wife of 39 years, retired from a career in banking. Steve and Louisa are the proud parents of two daughters and have been blessed with two grandchildren. Though it has been hard to be so far away from their family, they are enjoying Arizona. Before joining softball, Steve had never played on an organized sport s team. He has been a runner for most of his life and has played in a few games of pickup basketball, but even in high school he had not played any sports. While researching activities available in the Sun City area, Steve had read about the senior softball program and thought he might like to give it a try, but one day while watching a game he just knew he had to play. After going through the green team last spring, he was assigned a team and has not stopped playing since. He has played in the national league, the coed league, the summer league, and is now playing in the central league. Steve is known for his speed, Dan Burke even referred to him as the fastest guy in softball, and he loves playing the outfield. He is currently playing for the Paul Tone Farmers Insurance Editor s Note: Please join me and welcome Steve & his wife Louisa to our community and softball family. A raffle will be held during the banquet following the event. The top prize is a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta, fully loaded with custom features. If you have not seen the car parked at Liberty Field, it is a beauty. HUG A VOLUNTEER ~Kay Williams, Angels in the Outfield Chairperson The Recreation Centers of Sun City West has designated February as Volunteer Appreciation Month in Sun City West. This gives me an opportunity to thank all my Angels for all their assistance throughout the year. They have worked 3 days at the toy drive, served hot dogs and hamburgers for special events and let me know when members of our softball family are injured, ill or need other assistance. Special thanks to my Co-Chair Ann Mitchell who sends out all the cards and is my backup when I am out of town. Thanks to all the managers, field managers, league reporters and statisticians who donate so many hours of their time to the game they love. Next time you see a volunteer at the fields tell them THANKS FOR ALL THEY DO FOR OUR SOFTBALL FAMILY! You all are truly the heartline for our softball family! Page 2 of 7

3 WOMEN S LEAGUE ~ HOT FLASHES ~ Carol Bowden ~ The women's team is alive and well! They have had a busy January with several games at Liberty Field in addition to traveling to Casa Grande for a tournament. February will bring more games. The ladies continue to welcome new players to the team and encourage all ladies to join them on Friday afternoons at two o clock for practice and fun. CARDIAC KIDS TOURNAMENT Playing their hearts out to benefit cardiac research The 10 th Annual Bill Bromley Cardiac Kids Tournament will be held February 6th at Liberty Field. There are 4 teams made up of players that have all had at least one heart incident. Games are at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. In addition to great softball, we will have an exciting silent auction, a softball equipment and shoes garage sale, and of course the 50/50 raffle throughout the day. All proceeds will go to the Sun Health Foundation. Here is a picture from our Hot Flashes team that played in the Casa Grande Sliver Slippers tournament this past week end. L to R front row: Linda (Licker) Samson, Carolyn Lavis, Judy Christ, Peg Barcelo, Judy White. Back row: Bev Burger, Terry Sheldon, Lynn Shutt, Julie McGlynn, Patty Settje, Dee Coumont, Kay Peterson, Carol Bowden, Pat Williams. Calling all Ladies It is not too late to join a team. The Co-Ed league really needs more women players to fill their rosters. All skill levels are welcome. We have people who will work with you and help you practice. Please call (623) if you are interested. The players who participate in the annual "Cardiac Kids" softball tournament need the usual skills: hitting, running, fielding, throwing, and anything that gives them that competitive edge. But the main requirement needed to play in this tournament is that each player has had at least one cardiac event. Heart attack, heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehab: it all counts. Their cardiac events are a badge of honor and playing softball, which most of them do weekly, is an act of defiance over their ticker troubles. Plus, they've been cleared by their doctors to play. Hamburgers, sodas, and chips will be available following the games. Page 3 of 7
