4 Nebraska Baseball Weekly Release #9 Page 4 March 28, 2005 Huskers.com Welcome to Hawks Field at Haymarket Park The 2002 season marked the debut of the Huskers new home Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The fi eld is named in memory of Myrna Hawks, as the Hawks family was one of the major benefactors in the Haymarket Park project. In March of 2000, Howard and Myrna Hawks guaranteed the unfunded portion of UNL s $10.6 million commitment to the baseball/softball complex, which enabled the University to move forward in a joint venture with the City of Lincoln and NEBCO Inc., the owners of the Lincoln Saltdogs in the Northern League. The University retained the right to name the fi eld and on Feb. 23, 2002, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the name of Hawks Field. It was formally dedicated in pregame ceremonies against Kansas on April 28, The ballpark includes 4,500 chair-back seats, 16 suites, a Diamond View Lounge and a Sub-Air system that allows the fi eld to grow grass nearly year-round. The park is one of only three fi elds in the country that uses this state-of-the-art heating system (Invesco Field at Mile High and Safeco Field are the others). Other highlights of the complex include a 1,400-square feet clubhouse for the Husker baseball program, a video board/scoreboard in right center fi eld, the Buck Beltzer Playgound for kids down the right fi eld line and numerous restrooms and concession stands. Hawks Field, as well as the adjacent Bowlin Stadium the 2,500-seat softball stadium which opened in the fall of 2001 are both located inside Haymarket Park, a 32-acre complex that includes both stadiums as well as the plaza area and 2,000 parking stalls. Milner, who went 1-for- 2 with a pair of RBIs, hit a walk-off single off of NU closer Brett Jensen, snapping Nebraska s 11-game winning streak. The Jayhawks ninth-inning heroics thwarted NU s comeback, as the Huskers trailed 6-4 before rallying back on Curtis Ledbetter s solo homer in the sixth and Brandon Buckman s eighth-inning RBI double. Gordon paced the Husker attack, going 2-for-2 with two homers with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Buckman went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Saturday: Nebraska 9, Kansas 3 (G-2): Andy Gerch had two hits, including a key two-run double, as Nebraska rebounded for a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. Gerch s two-run double off KU starter and loser Sean Land hit keyed the Husker rally, as NU totaled 11 hits including two each from Jesse Boyer, Alex Gordon and Daniel Bruce. Brandon Buckman also drove in a pair of runs, as NU scored in six of nine frames. Nebraska received strong pitching efforts from Zach Kroenke and Johnny Dorn. Kroenke (3-0) went the fi rst six innings, allowing three runs and striking out four to post his third straight win, while Dorn fanned a career-high six Jayhawks over three innings of one-hit relief. Sunday: Nebraska 9, Kansas 4: Curtis Ledbetter went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Brian Duensing went a season-best 7.1 innings, as No. 9 Nebraska took the rubber game of the series with a 9-4 win. Ledbetter led the Huskers offensive outburst against his hometown school, driving in three of the Huskers fi rst four runs, as Nebraska jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on for the win. Duensing (4-0) pitched well in his fi rst Big 12 start since 2002, scattering six hits and taking a shutout into the eighth. The Omaha native allowed three runs and struck out three while walking only one for his fourth straight win. Daniel Bruce went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Trey Adams added a two-run homer in helping NU to its fi rst Big 12 series win since last April. Gordon s Gone Wild Probably no player is as hot as NU third baseman Alex Gordon. The fi rst-team All-American is hitting.540 (27-for-50) with eight homers and 20 RBIs and 27 runs scored in NU s last 14 games. Gordon has had four three-hit games in that stretch, raising his average from.265 to a Big 12-best.429. He was named Big 12 and National Player of the Week on March 21 after hitting.560 with four homers, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored in six games. Last weekend, Gordon went 4- for-9 with three homers, four RBIs, eight runs scored and six walks in the series win against Kansas. Gordon Piles Up Numbers, Honors After a season where he earned Big 12 Player-ofthe-Year and unanimous fi rst-team All-America honors, Gordon has already racked up a number of impressive honors heading into the 2005 season. He hit.365 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs in his sophomore campaign, a year where he ranked in the top four in the league in nine offensive categories. With Team USA last summer, Gordon hit.388 with four homers and 12 RBIs, while hitting.523 at the World University Games in Taiwan. This season, Gordon is hitting.429 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs, leading the Big 12 in hitting, on-base percentage (.579), slugging percentage (.905), walks (27) and runs scored (38) and is fourth in the league in stolen bases (12-for-12). His biggest hit of 2005 so far was a three-run eighthinning homer to break a 3-all tie against No. 7 Rice on Feb. 27, NU s fi rst win over the Owls since the 2001 NCAA Super Regional. The 6-3, 225-pounder has made an immediate impact, going 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA in six starts. The right-hander is fi rst in the Big 12 in strikeouts/nine innings (13.50), second in total strikeouts (55) third in opponent batting average (.160) and seventh in ERA. Against New Mexico on Feb. 25, Chamberlain struck out 15 in seven shutout innings en route to Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and National Co-Playerof-the-Week honors from Collegiate Baseball. His 15 strikeouts were the most by a Husker pitcher since Shane Komine in 2000 and two shy of the Huskers single-game record. Chamberlain then shut down No. 7 Rice, holding the Owls to one unearned run on four hits while striking out nine over 6.1 innings. He also has wins against South Dakota State, where he struck out nine and allowed one unearned run, and against Seton Hall, where he fanned 12 over eight innings. Fusilier Provides Spark for Husker Offense After missing all of the 2004 season with a shoulder injury, fi fth-year senior Brandon Fusilier (Coppell, Texas) has given the middle of the Husker lineup added protection. Fusilier enters this week hitting.366 with eight homers and 30 RBIs, pacing the squad in RBIs and ranking second to Gordon in homers. The 6- foot-3, 220-pounder from Coppell, Texas is third in the Big 12 in homers and slugging percentage (.695). In addition, he is also 8-for-9 in stolen bases, doubling his entire 2003 total of four in 48 contests. Fusilier, whose longest hitting streak two years ago was fi ve games, is currently riding a 13-game hit streak and has hit safely in 21 of 22 contests before missing the fi nal two games of the Kansas series with a shoulder injury. Homers Come in Bunches for Ledbetter Throughout his Husker career, fi rst baseman Curtis Ledbetter (Lawrence, Kan.) has shown the propensity to homer in bunches. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has four career multi-homer games, including two this season. The trend began in his Husker debut in 2003 when he hit two homers against Texas State. Ledbetter has shown versatility, as he has played outfi eld, catcher and fi rst base throughout his three seasons at Nebraska. Buckman is second on the team with 10 multi-hit games, including a fourhit effort at Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 17. Buckman drove in a season-high four RBIs against Northern Colorado on March 15 and had four RBIs in Saturday s twinbill split with Kansas. Last season, he earned junior college All-America honors at Garden City Community College, when he hit.460 with 16 homers. Double Down for 11 vs. SDSU Nebraska put together one of the most explosive innings in school history on March 13 against South Dakota State, putting up 11 runs, highlighted by fi ve homers. The 11 runs were the most by Nebraska in an inning since 2002, while the fi ve homers in the frame set a school and Big 12 record. In addition, a pair of Huskers found their way into the NCAA record book by hitting two homers in the same inning. Brandon Fusilier and Curtis Ledbetter became the third and fourth Huskers to hit two homers in one inning, and the fi rst since the 2000 season. Bruce Leads Husker Hit-by-Pitch Parade Senior outfi elder Daniel Bruce (Omaha, Neb.) continues to climb the NCAA record book. On Saturday, he was hit by his 62nd career pitch, moving into a tie with J.R. Revere (Georgia Southern, ) for fi fth place in the NCAA record books. Bruce, who set Nebraska s single-season record with 28 HBP in 2002, has rebounded after a disappointing 2004 season, hitting.333 with two homers and nine RBIs in 19 contests. Huskers in Professional Baseball At the end of the 2004 season, a total of 19 former Huskers were listed on Major League or Minor League rosters. The list was headlined by three Huskers who fi nished the season in the Major Leagues; Gold Glove winner Darin Erstad, American League All-Star Ken Harvey and Dan Johnson, who was called up in September and is on the Athletics 40-man roster. In all, a total of 19 former Huskers have reached the Major Leagues and made an appearance in a Major League game. A two-time All-Big 12 pick, Ledbetter committed one error in 473 chances, as his.998 fi elding percentage was the best ever by a Husker with 400 total chances in a season. In addition to his defensive prowess, the senior from Lawrence, Kan., hit.297 with eight homers and 56 RBIs, while leading the squad with 12 gamewinning RBIs. This season, Ledbetter has been a major offensive force, hitting.366 with six homers and 25 RBIs, ranking fi fth in the conference in round trippers. In fact, 14 of his 34 hits have been for extra bases, as he has a teamhigh eight doubles to go with his six homers. In addition to playing fi rst base, Ledbetter has also seen time at catcher, a position he has not played since his freshman year at Garden City Community College. Ledbetter ranks eighth in school history with 742 assists. Well Duensing The return of junior left-hander Brian Duensing has solidifi ed the Huskers weekend rotation. The Omaha native is 4-0 with a 2.12 ERA in seven appearances, including fi ve starts, heading into Sunday s start against No. 29 Oklahoma State. He is 12th in the Big 12 in ERA and is holding opponents to a.219 batting average since missing nearly two full seasons because of Tommy John surgery. Duensing went 16.2 innings - spanning four appearances - without allowing a run before allowing four runs against Northern Colorado on March 15. Duensing went a season-high 7.1 innings, scattering six hits in a 9-4 victory at Kansas on Saturday. Husker Pitchers Earn Passing Grade Despite having fi ve pitchers drafted in the highest total of Husker pitchers taken in the draft in more than 20 years - Nebraska s pitching staff has excelled during the fi rst month of the season. Nebraska pitchers currently... Are second in the Big 12 in ERA (2.29) and opponent batting average (.209). Have held 18 of 24 opponents to three runs or less as only one team (USC on March 6) has scored more than four runs. Lead the Big 12 with eight saves and allowed just fi ve of 32 inherited runners to score Jensen Shines in Closing Time Another pleasant surprise this spring has been the emergence of junior Brett Jensen (Eagle Grove, Iowa) as the Huskers closer. The 6-foot-7, 195-pounder has converted all fi ve of his save opportunities, as he is tied for second in the Big 12 lead in that category. Nimmo Turns in Career Day vs. Seton Hall Among all of the prolifi c offensive efforts during the fi rst month of the season, one of the most suprising was the effort turned in by freshman outfi elder Bryce Nimmo (Cheyenne, Wyo.) against Seton Hall on March 19. Nimmo, who had driven in just one run in his fi rst 12 appearances, went 2-for-3 with two homers - the fi rst two of his career- and six RBIs in a 11-2 win. The six RBIs were the most by a Husker since All-American Matt Hopper had seven in a 10-inning win against Missouri during the 2003 season. 13 Husker Games Picked for Television Baseball fans throughout the state of Nebraska will have ample opportunity to see the Huskers on television this spring, as a total of 13 regular-season games will be shown on either a state-wide or national basis. Moore, who suffered the injury during practice on Feb. 3, underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Feb. 5 in Lincoln.
