The Huskers (23-17 overall, 8-10 Big 12) enter the weekend after their longest layoff since early March. NU has not played since dropping a series to No. 4 Texas last weekend, as both mid-week games against North Dakota State were washed out. Last weekend s series with Texas wrapped up a stretch of 13 games against ranked teams over the last four weeks, leaving the Huskers strength of schedule among the top 10 in the country in both computerized ranking systems. One offensive bright spot from the weekend was the play of shortstop Ryan Wehrle, who hit.636 (7-for-11) on the weekend with a homer and four RBIs. The junior had two multi-hit games against Texas, matching his career-high with four hits in the series opener, and raised his batting average to.253. Left fielder Andy Gerch also enjoyed a strong offensive showing against the Longhorns, hitting.417 with a homer and three RBIs, highlighted by a 3-for-4 effort in Sunday s series finale. Kansas State comes to town with a overall record and is in seventh place in the Big 12 with a 6-9 mark. The Wildcats knocked off nationally ranked Wichita State, 2-1, on Wednesday night. KSU has lost its last three Big 12 series, as Oklahoma took 2-of-3 from the Wildcats last weekend. The Husker Position Players Pos. # Player Bats Cl. Avg. Weekend Recap Friday (Nebraska 7, Texas 0): Behind a two-hit shutout from Tony Watson and a career-high four hits from Ryan Wehrle, the Huskers posted a 7-0 shutout in the series opener. Watson (4-2) was nearly flawless against the Longhorns, allowing just four runners to reach base all night, including just two in scoring position, en route to his second complete game in three starts. The left-hander struck out six without a walk in handing UT its first shutout since last April. While Watson kept Texas scorless, Wehrle enjoyed a strong night at the plate with four hits, including his first homer in nearly two months, and drove in four of the Huskers seven runs. The junior shortstop s three-run homer in the sixth off UT starter James Russell gave the Huskers a 5-0 lead. The Huskers matched a seasonhigh with three homers, including solo shots from Mitch Abeita, his first of the season, and Andy Gerch, who had two hits and scored twice in victory. Saturday (Texas 8, Nebraska 4): Texas scored six unanswered runs to erase a 4-2 deficit and top the Huskers, 8-4. Adrian Alaniz allowed four runs on 7.2 innings for the victory. Brown s two-run double highlighted a three-run third inning that gave NU a 4-2 lead, but Texas scored three in the fourth and two more in the fifth off of NU starter Johnny Dorn, who took the loss. Brown, DJ Belfonte and Ryan Wehrle all had two hits for the Huskers in the losing effort. Sunday (Texas 6, Nebraska 2): Andy Gerch had three hits and drove in a pair of runs, but NU fell 6-2 in the series finale. Gerch s two-run first-inning single highlighted a 3-for-4 afternoon, but it would be the only offense the Huskers would muster against the Longhorn pitching staff. Joseph Krebs fanned three and allowed four hits over 6.1 innings for the win. The duo of Kyle Russell and Chance Wheeless paced the Longhorn offense, as they combined for six hits and drove in four of UT s six runs. One bright spot for the Huskers was the performance of reliever Luke Wertz, as the junior right-hander kept the Huskers in the game with 7.1 innings of scoreless relief, matching his career best with seven strikeouts. Scouting Kansas State The Wildcats come to Lincoln with a record and are 6-9 in the Big 12. Fourth-year Coach Brad Hill, who played for NU assistant Coach Dave Bingham at Emporia State, has the Wildcats making a run for their first NCAA berth in school history. Offensively, the Wildcats are led by outfielder Bryon Wiley, who leads KSU in all three triple crown categories ( ) while also stealing a team-best 10 bases. KSU features a balanced offense with 12 players hitting at least.275 on the year while four players have driven in at least 20 runs. On the mound, junior right-hander Brad Hutt has anchored the Wildcat rotation, as he is 7-2 with a 2.94 ERA in 12 starts. He ranks fifth in the league in wins and eighth in ERA, as he has thrown a team-high 64.1 innings. KSU also features one of the league s top relievers in sophomore Daniel Edwards, who is 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA and 10 saves in just 17 appearances. Edwards is tied for the Big 12 lead in saves. Nebraska leads the all-time series, , and has won 12 of the past 13 meetings dating back to the 2002 Big 12 Tournament. The Huskers have won all six meetings between the teams at Hawks Field, and have won 11 straight meetings in Lincoln dating back to the 1997 campaign. He leads NU in three offensive categories, including walks (25), hit-by-pitches (11) and sacrifices (10), while ranking second on the team in both runs scored (32) and on-base percentage (.441). Belfonte leads all Big 12 freshmen in walks and sacrifices, as he is fifth nationally among freshmen in sacrifices per game in the NCAA rankings released Wednesday. Belfonte is making a strong bid to become the first Husker freshman to ever lead Nebraska in runs scored and the first freshman to top NU in walks since Bobby Benjamin drew a school-record 91 walks in What Can Brown Do for You? First baseman Andrew Brown has been on a tear over the last month. The senior from Carrollton, Texas, is hitting.364 with two homers, 12 doubles and 14 RBIs over his last 19 games, including a career-long 15-game hit streak. Brown, who had just four doubles in his first 15 games, is now third in the Big 12 in that category and among the league leaders in slugging percentage. A second-team All-Big 12 designated hitter in 2006, he led NU to a series win at No. 23 Oklahoma, hitting.583 with five runs scored and three doubles over the weekend. First Last Corriston, Tezak Make Immediate Impact Junior college transfers Craig Corriston and Jeff Tezak have flourished throughout the 2007 campaign, their first in a Husker uniform. Corriston, who has started at five different positions (1B, 3B, SS, RF and DH), is hitting.316 on the season with five homers and 31 RBIs, leading NU with 14 multi-hit games while ranking second on the squad wth seven multi-rbi games. In league play, he is hitting.338 with 15 RBIs, as his 25 hits in 15 games is second in the league while he ranks 10th in RBIs. Two weeks against at No. 23 Oklahoma, he sparked the Huskers to a series win, hitting.400 with a homer and four RBIs, establishing a season-high with four RBIs in the finale. Tezak, who transferred in from Palomar (Calif.) JC at the start of the spring semester, is a switch-hitter who has found a role as NU s designated hitter. On the year, Tezak is hitting a team-high.358, an average that is 11th in the Big 12, with a pair of homers and 31 RBIs. He has reached base safely in 28 of 32 starts and saw a career-high 15-game hit streak snapped against Creighton on April 15. He has driven in 18 of his 29 RBIs in conference action, a total that is second in the league. Against Missouri on March 25, Tezak drove in a career-high six RBIs, including his first grand slam, and followed up with four RBIs in an 11-4 win over No. 14 Texas A&M on March 31. Tezak has been at the focal point of both of NU s last at-bat wins this season, delivering a sacrifice fly against Western Illinois on March 20 while capping a five-hit day at No. 22 Alabama on March 10 with his ninth-inning RBI single. He was chosen as the league s Player of the Week on March 12, after hitting.728 with a homer, three RBIs and two doubles in the series win over the Crimson Tide. Welcome Back Nimmo After missing nine games with a shoulder injury, center fielder Bryce Nimmo has returned to the Husker lineup with a flourish. He is hitting.319 with eight stolen bases and 13 runs scored in his last 31 contests, raising his average to.284. In Big 12 action, Nimmo has been even better, hitting.333 with eight runs scored in 14 appearances. He shined in NU s series win at No. 23 Oklahoma, hitting.455 (5-for-11) with three RBIs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases. Opitz Shows Offensive Punch One of the offensive keys for NU this season has been the continued development of second baseman Jake Opitz. The junior second baseman is hitting.277 with four homers and a team-best 31 RBIs, ranking first on the team in triples and RBIs and third in homers. Opitz, who has started 38 games at second, has already topped his career high in RBIs, which was 27 in 59 games a year ago. He also is third on the squad with 12 multi-hit games and is tied for team-high honors with eight multi-rbi contests. Opitz earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week accolades for his efforts at the Rice Invitational in February, hitting.600 and scoring five runs in helping NU to a 2-1 weekend. At Stetson the following weekend, he showed his improved power, belting two homers and driving in seven runs in two games on Sunday, as he equaled his entire 2006 total of homers in one afternoon. Hawks Field at Haymarket Park The 2002 season marked the debut of the Huskers new home Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The field is named in memory of Myrna Hawks, as the Hawks family was one of the major benefactors in the Haymarket Park project. In March of 2000, Howard and Myrna Hawks guaranteed the unfunded portion of UNL s $10.6 million commitment to the baseball/softball complex, which enabled the University to move forward in a joint venture with the City of Lincoln and NEBCO Inc., the owners of the Lincoln Saltdogs in the Northern League. The University retained the right to name the field and on Feb. 23, 2002, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the name of Hawks Field. It was formally dedicated in pregame ceremonies against Kansas on April 28, The ballpark includes 4,500 chair-back seats, 16 suites, a Diamond View Lounge and a Sub-Air system that allows the field to grow grass nearly year-round. The park was one of only three fields in the country that uses this state-of-the-art heating system (Invesco Field at Mile High and Safeco Field are the others). Other highlights of the complex include a 1,400- square feet clubhouse for the Husker baseball program, a video board/scoreboard in right center field, the Buck Beltzer Playground for kids down the right field line and numerous restrooms and concession stands. Hawks Field, as well as the adjacent Bowlin Stadium the 2,500-seat softball stadium which opened in the fall of 2001 are both located inside Haymarket Park, a 32-acre complex that includes both stadiums as well as the plaza area and 2,500 parking stalls. He provided the big hit in the win over Northern Colorado on March 28, a three-run triple that wiped out a 2-0 deficit. Edlefsen, Weber Provide Dual Threats The Huskers have relied on the two-way talents of Steve Edlefsen and Thad Weber during the 2007 season. Edlefsen, who can play nearly every position on the diamond, has been one of NU s most valuable performers this spring. An infielder in his first year at NU, he started nine games in right field while Bryce Nimmo was sidelined. Although he is batting just.188, Edlefsen enjoyed his best offensive weekend of the year at Texas Tech, hitting.444 with four RBIs, as he drove in a career-high three runs against the Red Raiders on March 16. On the mound, Edlefsen has moved into the closer s role and has a team-high four saves in as many chances. Weber, a junior college All-American at Hutchinson (Kan.) CC, is batting.257 with seven RBIs in 10 games, splitting time between designated hitter and first base. Weber has found his niche in the Husker bullpen, where he is 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA in 12 appearances. He did not allow an earned run in his first 10 outings and collected the win against in-state rival Creighton on April 3, fanning four over 2.1 innings of one-hit ball. Dorn Climbs Husker Win List With his win against No. 24 Oklahoma on April 14, Johnny Dorn moved one spot closer to second place on NU s career wins list. The junior right-hander is 27-8 in his career and now is three wins away from tying Jeff Anderson for second place on NU s all-time list. Of Dorn s 27 career wins, nine have been in Big 12 series clinchers over the past three seasons, including five as a freshmen when he went 12-2 en route to All- America honors. The wins chart is one of three top-10 lists that Dorn is on, as he ranks eighth on NU s career starts list (37) and ninth all-time in innings pitched (245.1). Nebraska Career Wins List No. Mark Player Years Shane Komine Jeff Anderson Johnny Dorn 2005-Present Foust Has Been a Find One of the biggest surpises for the Husker staff has been the emergence of junior Matt Foust. The right-hander had pitched only 12.2 innings prior to this season, but has become one of the Huskers most reliable arms this season. He is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA and three saves in 17 games, ranking 11th in ERA while holding opponents to a.236 batting average. He has three saves this month, including two in Big 12 play, before turning in his best effort of the year against Creighton on April 17, allowing two runs over a career-long eight innings, but took the loss in a 2-1 setback. A Relief Effort Wertz Waiting For Junior Luke Wertz has turned into the true epitome of a long reliever. In his last two outings, he has pitched 16 innings of work in appearances against nationally ranked Oklahoma and Texas. Wertz, who has not allowed a run in his last 14 innings of work, picked the perfect time to turn in the best relief effort of his career, as he clinched NU s series win over No. 23 Oklahoma on April 15. The righthander went a career-high 8.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits for his first-ever Big 12 win. Wertz retired 22 of 23 Sooners during one stretch en route to turning in the longest relief effort by a Husker since All-American Shane Komine tossed 9.2 innings at Iowa State during the 1999 campaign. Last Sunday, Wertz was just as sharp against fourth-ranked Texas, holding the Longhorns scoreless over the final 7.1 innings, as he matched his career high with seven strikeouts. Brown, Watson Garner Big 12 Honors Andrew Brown and Tony Watson were rewarded for their performances last week, as both players earned Big 12 weekly honors on April 9. Brown was named the league s Player of the Week for the first time in his career after hitting.500 (8-for-16) with four doubles, a triple and five runs scored in four games. His eighthinning RBI double against Creighton broke a tie on April 3. He also went 6-for-12 against OSU, including a 3-for-4 effort with a double and triple in the series clincher on April 7. Watson collected his second conference honor in three weeks, sharing pitcher-of-the-week honors with Missouri s Rick Zagone. Watson tossed a complete game against No. 13 Oklahoma State on April 6, holding the Cowboys to a season-low two runs, and striking out a career-best 12 hitters without a walk in a 5-2 win. Doubling Up with Brown Andrew Brown found his way into the Husker record books on March 25, belting three doubles in NU s win over Missouri. He became the 15th Husker to hit three doubles in a game, as he doubled in each of his first three at-bats. The Husker first baseman then capped his first career four-hit day with a homer as part of NU s 12-run inning against the Tigers. In 2006, he became the first Husker shortstop in 21 seasons to earn first-team all-conference honors, hitting a team-best.367 with eight homers and 49 RBIs. Wehrle led NU in average and ranked second on the squad in RBIs, while also going a perfect 14-for-14 on the base paths. A twoyear starter, Wehrle also enjoyed a strong performance in the field, posting a.949 fielding percentage while starting 57 contests. Huskers Picked Third in the Big 12 The Huskers were picked to finish third in the preseason vote of the Big 12 coaches. The Huskers, who finished and reached NCAA Regional play for the seventh time in eight seasons, totaled 64 points in the voting of the league s 10 coaches. NU tied for third in the Big 12 last season with a league mark and reached the title game of the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. NU finished behind defending Big 12 champion Texas and Oklahoma State in the tabulation. The Longhorns totaled 79 points and seven of the 10 first-place votes. Oklahoma State totaled 70 points and two first-place votes, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Texas A&M received the other first-place vote. Following Nebraska in the poll was Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State. Two Former Huskers on Baseball America Top-100 Prospects List A pair of former Husker All-Americans are featured in Baseball America s list of the top-100 prospects for the 2007 season released earlier this season.
