The three-game series between the Huskers and Sooners commences Friday at 6:35 p.m. with afternoon tilts set for Saturday (2:05) and Sunday (1:05). The entire series will be carried across the state on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including KLIN (1400 AM) in Lincoln, KFAB (1110 AM) in Omaha and KRVN (880 AM) in Lexington, and on the Internet at Huskers.com. Saturday and Sunday s games will also be carried on SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Ch. 147). Saturday s game will be televised and produced by Cox Communications and available on Cox Cable in Omaha (Ch. 2), Time Warner Cable in Lincoln and surrounding areas (Ch. 77) and on Charter Media across the western portion of the state with Greg Sharpe, Kyle Peterson and Paul Meyers calling all of the action. The game will also be shown in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Louisiana and Arkansas. The Huskers used a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting to complete a season sweep of Creighton with a 4-1 win on Tuesday in front of a crowd of 21,158 at Omaha s Rosenblatt Stadium. Four pitchers combined to hold the Bluejays to one run, while NU broke a 1-all deadlock with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. With Tuesday s win, NU is on the season and is on pace for its seventh 40-win season in the last eight years. The Huskers, who have not played a Big 12 home game since April 30, will face a stern test from an Oklahoma club that is and ranked in the top-15 nationally this week. While Texas wrapped up the Big 12 regular-season title last week, both the Huskers and Sooners have a lot to play for this weekend. Nebraska (16-8) is a game ahead of both Oklahoma (15-9) and Oklahoma State (15-9) in the race for second place in the Big 12. A series win over Oklahoma would guarantee NU a top-two finish in the Big 12 for the sixth time in seven seasons and would mean the second or third seed in next week s Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. A busy weekend at Hawks Field is planned with Parents Day set for Saturday, while Husker seniors Brandon Buckman, Jeff Christy and Brett Jensen will be honored prior to Sunday s regular-season finale. The trio all have played instrumental roles in helping NU post a (.766) record over the past two years as Huskers. The Husker Lineup Card Pos. # Player Bats Cl. Avg. Last Time Out Tuesday (Nebraska 4, Creighton 1): Charlie Shirek pitched six strong innings, and Andrew Brown paced a 12-hit NU attack, leading the Huskers to a 4-1 win over Creighton in front of 21,158 at Omaha s Rosenblatt Stadium. Shirek (4-2) picked up the victory allowing one run on five hits through six innings, while striking out three, while relievers Erik Bird, Zach Herr and Brett Jensen combined for three innings of shutout relief. Brown enjoyed his third multi-hit game in the last four contest with three hits, including a homer, while Jake Mort and Jeff Christy also added a trio of hits. Christy used his first multi-hit day since April 29, including a double and his first career triple, to break an 0-for-14 slump, while Mort s three hits was also career high. Scouting Oklahoma Under first-year Coach Sunny Gollway, the Sooners have enjoyed a resurgence in 2006, coming to Lincoln with a record and are ranked as high as 13th in the national polls this week. OU is a veteran club with eight returning starters from a year ago and a weekend rotation and closer which is entirely made up of seniors. Offensively, eight of OU s nine starters are above.300, including Chuckie Caufield, who is hitting.363 with seven homers, 39 RBIs and a team-best 18 stolen bases. Ryan Rohlinger is also above the.350 mark while leading the squad in homers (nine) and RBIs (49). While the Sooners offense is among the Big 12 s best, their defense has been even better, as their.984 fielding percentage is the nation s best. On the mound, right-hander Daniel McCutchen has six wins and a 3.67 ERA, striking out 103 in innings. Steven Guerra is tied for second in wins and leads the starters with a 3.66 ERA in 86 innings. Oklahoma leads the all-time series, , but Nebraska has enjoyed the better of the rivalry in recent years. The Huskers won 3-of-4 meetings last season, including a series win in Norman, and has dropped only one series to OU since the 1998 season. The Huskers are 22-6 against the Sooners in that span. 6 Nebraska Baseball 2006 Weekly Release #21 Page 6 May 18, 2006 Huskers.com Hawks Field at Haymarket Park The 2002 season marked the debut of the Huskers new home Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. The field is named in memory of Myrna Hawks, as the Hawks family was one of the major benefactors in the Haymarket Park project. In March of 2000, Howard and Myrna Hawks guaranteed the unfunded portion of UNL s $10.6 million commitment to the baseball/softball complex, which enabled the University to move forward in a joint venture with the City of Lincoln and NEBCO Inc., the owners of the Lincoln Saltdogs in the Northern League. The University retained the right to name the field and on Feb. 23, 2002, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the name of Hawks Field. It was formally dedicated in pregame ceremonies against Kansas on April 28, The ballpark includes 4,500 chair-back seats, 16 suites, a Diamond View Lounge and a Sub-Air system that allows the field to grow grass nearly year-round. The park was one of only three fields in the country that uses this state-of-the-art heating system (Invesco Field at Mile High and Safeco Field are the others). Other highlights of the complex include a 1,400- square feet clubhouse for the Husker baseball program, a video board/scoreboard in right center field, the Buck Beltzer Playgound for kids down the right field line and numerous restrooms and concession stands. Hawks Field, as well as the adjacent Bowlin Stadium the 2,500-seat softball stadium which opened in the fall of 2001 are both located inside Haymarket Park, a 32-acre complex that includes both stadiums as well as the plaza area and 2,500 parking stalls. The two players will now move on to the national ballot, where they will be under consideration for Academic All-America honors and will look to join the nine other Huskers who have earned Academic All- America honors since Cool Hand Luke Junior college transfer Luke Gorsett has quickly made a name for himself as one of the Big 12 s top newcomers and a fan favorite at Hawks Field. The junior from Denver enters the weekend hitting.363 (13th in the Big 12) and ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in homers (15, second), slugging percentage (.674, third) and total bases (128, second). He is 28th nationally in homers per game and 36rd in slugging percentage according to this week s NCAA rankings. Gorsett was among the top-10 players listed on the CSTV National Player of the Year Watch for several weeks during the season and was added to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List on May 7. While Gorsett has shown his power potential throughout the year, he has consistently been among the Big 12 s top hitters, putting two double-digit hit streaks including a Big 12-high 17 game hit streak from March 26 to April 23. In fact, he had reached safely via hit or walk in his first 48 contests before the streak was snapped on Tuesday. In 2005, Gorsett was a first-team NJCAA All-American at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, hitting a national-best 24 homers and driving in 71 runs. Big 12 s Top Newcomers Player School Avg. HR RBIs Tyler Mach Oklahoma State Diek Scram Oklahoma State Roger Kieschnick Texas Tech Luke Gorsett Nebraska The Buck Starts Here After hitting just three homers in his first 197 at-bats at Nebraska, senior first baseman Brandon Buckman has enjoyed a power surge this spring. He began the stretch with his first career multihomer game against Minnesota on March 5, capping his second career four-hit day with a towering blast into the upper deck in the Metrodome. Since then, Buckman, who was hitting.200 at the time, has increased his average to.335 while hitting 14 homers and driving in a team-high 48 RBIs. He ranks among the Big 12 s top performers in homers (third), slugging percentage (.598, 10th), total bases (116, 10th) and RBIs (48, ninth). The Huskers Dynamic Duo The pairing of Buckman and Gorsett in the middle of the Husker lineup has provided Nebraska with one of the nation s most productive duos. The pair have both hit at least 14 homers, marking the first time since the 2000 campaign - and only the fourth time since that NU has had a pair of players with at least 14 homers Husker Power Duos Since 1990 Year Player No. Player No Brandon Buckman 14 Luke Gorsett Dan Johnson 21 Matt Hopper Marc Sagmoen 18 Derek Dukart Bobby Benjamin 18 Kevin Jordan 14 Wehrle Makes his Case at Short Ryan Wehrle has emerged as one of the catalysts at the top of the Husker lineup and is making a bid to become the first Husker shortstop to earn first-team all-conference honors since On the season, Wehrle is seventh in the Big 12 with a.370 average while chipping in five homers and 41 RBIs. He is second in the Big 12 with 16 doubles and also tops the Huskers with 25 multi-hit games. In the clutch, Wehrle is hitting.400 with runners in scoring position and has a team-high 17 two-out RBIs. Wehrle enters the final weekend of the regular season needing four doubles to break into NU s top-10 single-season list in that category. In addition, he has been solid defensively, fielding at a.946 clip, as NU is second in the Big 12 with a.974 fielding percentage. Comparing Wehrle & 2006 Year Avg GP AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB Brown Hits his Stride Junior college transfer Andrew Brown has worked his way into the lineup in recent weeks, as the Carrollton, Texas, native has been one of NU s hottest hitters. Brown has been on a tear of late, hitting.500 with four homers in his last 11 contests, raising his season average to.314. He was one of NU s top performers in the Baylor series, going 5-for-9 with two homers in Friday s series opener and matching his career high with three hits on Saturday. He continued his hot hitting on Tuesday with three more hits, including his fourth homer in NU s last six contests. Brown earned NJCAA All-Region honors at Paris (Texas) Junior College, hitting.404 with 18 homers and 55 RBIs in He was also chosen as the MVP of the Texas Collegiate League in 2005, a wood bat league that ranks as one of the nation s top summer leagues. Gerch Provides Emotional Lift The Huskers welcomed the return of sophomore Andy Gerch to the lineup on April 28. Gerch, who had missed the previous 11 games because of a shoulder injury and the death of his father earlier in the month, has provided immediate dividends. He sparked NU s ninth-inning rally against Texas Tech by coaxing a pinch-hit walk, as the Huskers scored once in the ninth before winning in the 11th. Gerch, who was hitless in his first 12 conference at-bats, has been on a roll, hitting.395 (15-for-38) with nine RBIs and nine runs scored over his last 11 games. He saw his eight-game hit streak snapped in Sunday s loss to Baylor. Husker Defense Excels Under Head Coach Mike Anderson, the Huskers have been one of the nation s top defensive clubs over the last three years. NU ranked in the top 10 nationally in fielding percentage in both 2004 and 2005 and is 12th in this week s NCAA ranking. Jaros, who is 19th in the Big 12 in hitting with a.352 average, collected his first career four-hit game against UNK on April 19 before hitting.455 with four runs scored in the series win at No. 5 Texas en route to earning Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors for the first time in his career. In addition to his offensive performances, Jaros also preserved NU s 7-5 win over the Longhorns on April 22 with an acrobatic sprawling catch that started a seventh-inning double play. Jaros continued his hot hitting in a sweep of Texas Tech, going 3-for-7 with two walks and three runs scored, as he drove in the game-winning run in a 4-3, 11-inning win. Jaros jammed his wrist making a diving catch at Oklahoma State on May 10, and didn t return to the starting lineup until Sunday s finale at Baylor. A Night to Remember Sophomore Steve Edlefsen needed just 13 games to accomplish a pair of feats that two-time All-American Alex Gordon could not do during his illustrious career. On April 8 against Iowa, Edlefsen not only tied Nebraska s single-game record with six hits, but became the second Husker to hit for the cycle in He singled in the first, belted his first career homer in the third, doubled in the eighth and completed the cycle with a stand-up triple in the 11th. Edlefsen, who had just six hits in his first 16 career games, doubled that total against the Hawkeyes, raising his average from.162 to.267 by going 6-for-8 and scoring five times. He became the sixth player in school history to record six hits in a game, a feat most recently accomplished by John Cole in Gordon, who played in 193 games at NU and whose name is littered up and down the school record charts, only had one four-hit game during his Husker career. The only other times the feat has been accomplished were by first-team All-Americans Alex Gordon (March 22-29, 2005) and Ken Harvey (April 12-19, 1999). Buckman led the Huskers to a series win over Kansas, hitting.615 (8-for-13) with a homer and four RBIs in three games. He had three multi-hit games on the weekend, including a 4-for-5 effort in the series opener on March 25. Wehrle hit.591 (13-for-22) with six runs, four stolen bases, a homer and four RBIs in five contests. He posted five straight multi-hit games during the week, including his first career four-hit day against Northern Colorado on March 29. Elementary, Watson, Elementary It does not take a detective to figure out that Tony Watson has emerged into one of the Big 12 s top starters in The 6-foot-4, 210-pound left-hander has been exceptional during the season, as he is 7-1 with a 3.20 ERA in a team-best 81.2 innings of work. Watson has pitched at least five innings in 12 of his 13 starts, holding opponents to one run or less six times. He ranks in the top 10 of the league in ERA (seventh), opposing batting average (.233, fourth) and strikeouts (62, ninth), posting nearly a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Watson had won 12 straight decisions dating back to March of 2005 before taking the loss at Baylor on Saturday, an outing where he gave up five hits over 6.1 innings in a 4-1 loss. He is 13-2 in his career at NU. Against Texas A&M on April 14, Watson tossed a complete-game five-hitter in a 4-3 victory, the third straight outing where he set a career high in innings pitched. On March 26, Watson fanned a career high 10 hitters in a 4-1 victory. Chamberlain Reaches Double Figures With a 5-4 record and a 3.75 ERA, Joba Chamberlain has been solid in the No. 1 spot for the Huskers. The All-American has held seven of his 11 opponents to three runs or less, including seven innings of shutout ball against Notre Dame on March 3. He is third in the Big 12 in strikeouts (83), sixth in opposing batting average (.238) and 18th in ERA (3.75). Chamberlain pitched well at Baylor in his last outing, allowing four earned runs while striking out a seasonhigh 12 Bears over 7.1 innings of work. He has thrown at least seven innings in each of his last three starts. A two-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, Chamberlain has reached double figures in strikeouts three times this season, as he also had 11 against Notre Dame on March 3 and 10 strikeouts at No. 4 Rice on Feb. 25. With 12 strikeouts last Friday at Baylor, Chamberlain now sits in fifth place on NU s career charts with 213 strikeouts upped his career total to 201, tying Jamie 2006 Nebraska Baseball Quick Facts Location... He followed that performance with seven shutout innings in a 6-0 win at No. 5 Texas on April 25, fanning five and scattering five hits while extending his streak of shutout innings to 19.1 dating back to April 9. In Big 12 games, Dorn is 11-2 in his two-year Husker career, including 7-0 in games which decide a conference series. Overall, he is 21-5 as a Husker, moving into a tie for sixth on NU s career wins list. Jensen calmly slapped a single to center and then scored moments later on Nick Jaros RBI double to center. Two Huskers Named to Watch List A pair of Huskers were honored on May 1, as pitchers Brett Jensen and Johnny Dorn were selected to the initial Dick Howser Award Watch List. Jensen is one of the nation s premier closers, going 5-0 with 10 saves and a 2.65 ERA in 21 appearances. Jensen is second in the Big 12 in saves and is holding opponents to a.180 batting average over 37.1 innings. Dorn, a third-time All-American as a freshman, has been one of the Big 12 s best starters in 2006, posting an 9-3 record and 3.65 ERA in 11 starts. The righthander is tied for first in wins, third in complete games, fourth in shutouts and 15th in ERA. The 2006 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 16, at 10 a.m. (CDT). Both Dorn and Jensen will look to follow in the footsteps of 2005 winner Alex Gordon. The Set-Up Freshmen relievers Erik Bird and Zach Herr have been instrumental in NU s strong performances this year, setting the table for All-American closer Brett Jensen. The duo has allowed just nine of 44 inherited runners to score this season. Bird comes into the OU series allowing one earned run in 20 appearances, spanning 17.2 innings of work. He fired a career-high 2.2 innings of work in Wednesday s loss to Northern Iowa and notched his first career save against Creighton on April 18, fanning two over 1.1 innings of perfect relief. The Huskers are 5-0 in extra-inning games this season. NU is an impressive 11-4 in extra inning games in Mike Anderson s four seasons at Nebraska. Huskers End 11-Year Search for Cycle It took junior college transfer Luke Gorsett just eight games to accomplish a feat that hadn t happened at Nebraska since the Big 12 formed in to hit for the cycle. Gorsett went 4-for-5 against Notre Dame on March 3, as he singled (1st), homered (3rd), doubled (4th) and tripled (8th). Gorsett became the first Husker to accomplish the feat since Mel Motley on May 10, 1995, against Nebraska-Kearney (a feat later matched by Steve Edlefsen at Iowa on April 11). Stern Shines in World Baseball Classic Former NU outfielder Adam Stern helped the Canadian National Team to a 2-1 record at the World Baseball Classic. Stern, who played at NU from 1999 to 2001 and was a member of the Huskers first CWS squad, hit.667 (6-for-9) with a homer and five RBIs in three games. Three Named Preseason All-Americans A trio of Husker baseball players have been honored during the preseason, as pitchers Joba Chamberlain, Johnny Dorn and Brett Jensen have been selected to various preseason All-America teams. Chamberlain turned in an impressive first season at NU, going 10-2 with a 2.81 ERA to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors.
