Tribe Reaches Third Day of CAA Championships Facing elimination, William and Mary posted an 11-8 victory on the second day of the CAA Tournament over #1 seed UNC Wilmington to advance, one of only four teams to reach the third day. Tim Park hit two solo home runs in the game, and Greg Maliniak capped the come-back in the seventh with a grand-slam down the left field line on a 1-2 count. Pat Kantakevich claimed the save, his 10th of the year and 12th of his career, to set the W&M record in both categories. Three Tabbed as All-Americans Tim Park, Mike Sheridan, and Ben Guez all earned All-American awards following the season, the first time that the Tribe has had three players honored in one year. Sheridan and Park were both named third-team All-Americans by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball newspaper, with Sheridan also earning third-team accolades from the ABCA. Guez was chosen as one of 19 first-team honorees by the Jewish Sports Review. Sheridan First Tribe Player to Earn State Honor Mike Sheridan became the first W&M baseball player to earn the title of State Player of the Year since the Virginia Sports Information Directors began honoring the Commonwealth s best in Tim Park Named W&M AEF Athlete of the Year Senior catcher Tim Park became the second baseball player in as many years to share the title of William and Mary s top senior athlete when he was chosen as the Tribe Club s co-male Athlete of the Year. All-American Greg Sexton was also named co-male Athlete of the Year in School-Record Four Taken in the MLB Draft Four players were taken in the 2008 MLB Draft, the most in one season ever at W&M. Mike Sheridan was the fifth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays, marking the fifth time since 2003 that a Tribe player has been taken on the first day of the draft. Ben Guez followed in the 19th round to the Detroit Tigers, and hurlers Sean Grieve and Pat Kantakevich were taken in the 21st round by Philadelphia and the 22nd by Baltimore, respectively. Seven Earn All-Conference Acclaim Seven Tribe players earned some form of conference recognition from the Colonial Athletic Association in 2008, tying the 2001 championship squad for the most-ever in one season. Mike Sheridan was named both first-team All-CAA and to the all-tournament team, and was joined on the all-conference first team by Ben Guez. Tim Park, Paul Juliano, and Pat Kantakevich were all selected to the All-CAA second-team, and Sean Grieve joined Sheridan on the all-tournament team. Pitcher Tim Norton rounded out the selections as W&M s representative on the all-rookie team. Player of the Year Watch Lists Take Green and Gold Hue William and Mary placed four different players on four of the nation s most prestigious Award Watch Lists during the 2008 season. Tim Park was a preseason selection to the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List, and would add inclusion on the Johnny Bench Catcher of the Year and Dick Howser Player of the Year lists to his season accomplishments. Mike Sheridan was also accorded a spot on the Dick Howser Watch List, and was chosen as one of 64 players on the revised Brooks Wallace Award List in April. Hurlers Sean Grieve and Pat Kantakevich were both mid-season choices on the Roger Clemens Pitcher of the Year Watch List In Review Tough to Beat at Plumeri Park W&M experienced historic success at Plumeri Park last season, posting a best-ever 26-6 record at the facility including a 12-3 mark against conference opponents in Williamsburg. As a team, the Tribe posted a.355 batting average at home. Leading the way was Tim Park, who hit.465 at Plumeri Park. Best Start W&M opened the 2008 season with a 6-0 record, which was the program s best start since the 1996 season when it began the year with eight consecutive wins. Impressive Stretch The Tribe put together an impressive stretch in the middle of the season, as it earned victories in 19 of 22 games from March 29-May 8. Guez Posts 32-Game Hitting Streak Ben Guez put together an amazing 32-game hitting streak from March 5 to April 23. It was the longest hitting streak in the nation last season. During the stretch, he hit.400 and posted 14 multi-hit games. Additionally, he recorded an on-base percentage of.480. W&M Defeats No. 16 Virginia The Tribe earned one of its most impressive wins of the season at No. 16 Virginia on April 23. Ben Guez extended his hitting streak to 32 games with a 3-for-5 effort. The Houston, Texas native also recorded two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Tyler Stampone also came up big, going 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. RHP Cody Winslow (4-1) earned the win, working 5.0 innings with three earned runs allowed. RHP Pat Kantakevich worked a ninth inning with two strikeouts to record his eighth save of the season. Fans Pack Plumeri Park The second-largest crowd in the history of Plumeri Park was on hand for the Tribe s doubleheader against VCU on April 19. A crowd of 829 helped cheer on the College as it took both games to earn an important conference series sweep against the Rams. Tribe Posts Seven-Game CAA Winning Streak With the series sweep against ODU in mid-march, the Tribe extended its conference winning streak to seven games. Six of those wins came at Plumeri Park, as the College went a pefect 6-0 in home league games. During the streak, Mike Sheridan led the squad with a.593 batting average, two home runs, 12 RBI, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases. Rob Nickle also came up big with a.452 batting average, four home runs, 16 RBI and nine runs scored. Sheridan Posts Big Week After an impressive set of performances in early March, Mike Sheridan was selected as the CAA Co-Player of the Week on March 11. Sheridan was also honored as the College Baseball Blog and StatStud.com National Player of the Week. In five games, Sheridan posted a.706 batting average (12-for-17) with two home runs, 10 RBI, nine runs scored and two stolen bases. Additionally, he registered a slugging percentage. Sheridan s best performance of the week came in the 21-6 victory against Hofstra when he went 4-for-5 with a home run, seven RBI and four runs scored. The Washington, D.C., native finished the Hofstra series 9-for-10 with two home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Impressive Run Production The Tribe scored at least nine runs in 25 games last season. In those contests, the College was Additionally, W&M scored 20 or more runs twice, recording conference victories at home against Hofstra (21-6) and on the road against Towson (20-8). Winning Streaks W&M registered three five-game winning streaks last spring. Each of the stretches were the most consecutive wins since the College rattled off six straight wins during the 2005 season. Offensive Fireworks During a five-game stretch from April 25-May 3, W&M averaged nearly 15 runs per game and hit.425 (85-for-200) as a team. Top of the Order The first four hitters in the Tribe s lineup -- Greg Maliniak, Ben Guez, Mike Sheridan and Tim Park -- all had tremendous seasons offensively, combining to hit.397 (357-for-900). Impressive Non-Conference Record The Tribe earned a 19-6 record in non-conference games in 2008, including victories in 10 of the final 12 non-league contests. Mike Sheridan set four school records in 2008, garnered two All-America selections, and was named the VaSID State Player of the Year. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round. 3

2009 Outlook After a season that saw the Tribe record the second most wins in school history (36), W&M head coach Frank Leoni and his staff are looking to guide a talented 2009 squad to even greater heights this spring. With an everyday lineup that brings five returnees back from last season and a staff that features pre-season Wallace Award Watch List performer Kevin Landry, the College figures to be poised for a run deep into the always competitive Colonial Athletic Association and beyond. Although the Tribe lost four of its top five hitters out of one of the nation s most potent line-ups, the Green and Gold seems poised to reload with exceptional returning talent in seniors Tyler Stampone, Rob Nickle, and James Williamson. Last season, the trio was productive as it batted combined.333 with 14 home runs, and 107 RBIs. The coaches will count on their steady presence and leadership as the remainder of the line up grows accustomed to new, or increased, roles. While we may not average 8.5 runs per game [as the Tribe did in 2008], Leoni said, we have enough offensive punch to be very successful in On the mound this season, the Tribe will have a great balance of both proven veteran talent and young, up and coming pitching. As previously mentioned, Landry will be the anchor to the staff, as he is coming off an outstanding summer in the ultra-competitive Cape Cod League that caught the attention of the collegiate baseball world. Although the Tribe lost three quality hurlers from last season, Leoni believes that the depth of the pitching should improve with the addition of the five talented incoming freshmen. Our pitching staff will be young, said Leoni, but it should be much deeper than in recent years. We should have improved options in the rotation as well as the bullpen to manage the season. Infield and Catchers The Tribe s middle infield will have plenty of veteran talent and leadership, as experience double-play combination of shortstop Lanny Stanfield and second baseman James Williamson return for their senior seasons. Williamson is a team co-captain who turned in a great 2008 campaign that saw him develop his offense to go along with his solid defense. The product of Houston, Texas, was as consistent a player as the College had last season, making 45 starts and hitting.333 with 10 steals and just four errors. He also went on to impress over the summer, earning all-star honors in the Hawai i League before being called up to the Cape Cod League for the final weeks of the season. Stanfield comes into the season with three years of starting experience at short. In 2008, Stanfield was solid both in the field and at the plate, as he hit.270 with 23 Tyler Stampone RBIs and 10 doubles in 141 plate appearances. This season, Leoni will look for him to continue to improve offensively, while Williamson will look to set the table for the rest of the Green and Gold towards the top of the order. Sophomore Derek Osteen saw action in 30 games as a freshman, including nine starts, and will see significant time at second base. Osteen will be looked upon to not only provide an offensive spark, but also solid defense up the middle for the College to go along with his speed on the base paths. Redshirt freshman Kevin Alas will also provide depth for the College at second base. Stampone, the team s other co-captain, will hold down the hot corner and will be one of the top returners for Leoni, as he will look to improve off his impressive offensive numbers of 2008 that included a.333 BA, 26 RBIs, and 15 steals. Opposite Stampone, senior Brett Conner will be battling with freshman Tadd Bower for starting rights at first base. Last season, Conner appeared in 14 games and earned three starts. Conner had a good fall at the plate and will look to add some punch in the middle of the Tribe s line-up this season. Bower joins the Tribe as a great athlete and will be even more valuable down the road as he fully develops his potential to hit with above-average power. Behind the plate, junior Chris Jensen and freshman Chris Forsten will compete for time in Both will have big shoes to fill with the departure of all-conference performer Tim Park, who started all 57 games last season, batting.418, hitting 14 home runs, and knocking in 62 RBIs. Jensen is seen as a defensive signal-caller with the ability to improve his offense with increased playing time. Forsten comes into the program as a gifted defensive catcher, and has a bright future with the Tribe both in 2009 and beyond. Adding depth at the position will be freshman Sean Aiken, who will look to provide a spark off the bench when called upon. Our infield should continue to establish the team with a position of strength and leadership, Leoni said. We need Stampone, Stanfield, and Williamson to step up and fill the void left by last year s seniors, and I have every confidence that will happen early on in the campaign. James Williamson Outfield Speedy senior Jeff Jones comes into the season penciled in as the starting centerfielder. The Stafford, Va., native will be looked upon not only for his solid defense, but also as a run-producer in the middle of the lineup. Jones appeared in 46 games with 28 starts for the College last season. The athletically gifted senior will look to improve on his offensive numbers he put together in limited action a year ago. He was a productive player in his 110 plate appearances, as he hit.327, scored 24 runs and stole 16 bases in just 19 attempts. Nickle will hold down the right field position for the Tribe in Nickle enters the season as the Tribe s most potent power threat and will look to be one of the CAA s most feared offensive players during his senior season. A year ago, the Midlothian, Va., native saw action in 50 games with 47 starts, hitting.331, knocking 10 homers, and collecting 48 RBIs. Versatile junior Cole Franklin figures see time in the field and on the mound. He enters the spring as a potential starter in the outfield and will once again be counted on for his steady defensive hand, but will 6

look to improve on his offense with more at-bats this season. Freshman Stephen Arcure will see a fair amount of playing time in the outfield. The athletic rookie has the ability to play all three outfield positions and is a lead-off type hitter for the team on offense. Also seeing time in the field and on the mound will be junior Tyler Truxell after a solid fall as a two-way player. Freshman Andy Longosz will also see time in the outfield this year, looking to contribute when called upon off the bench. Leoni was optimistic about the prospects facing the College s outfielders. Although we lost two significant players in our outfield, the W&M tradition of quality players patrolling the grass should continue in Pitchers In 2008, the Tribe pitching staff had its good and bad moments for the College, but in 2009 it should be improved as Leoni returns some great veteran pitchers and adds several highly talented freshmen. Leoni will use a traditional starting rotation of conference and mid-week starters, but will once again use a unique system out of the bullpen. A quartet of pitchers is slated to be used as bridge pitchers, who will relieve the starters and generally pitch in short stints. Leoni will then utilize a bullpen rotation of secondary starters that will pitch multiple innings and close out games. The Tribe s pitching staff this season will be highlighted by Landry, who will anchor the end of games for the College as the top secondary-starter out of the bullpen. Landry, who was named to the preseason Wallace Award Watch List after his outstanding summer in the Cape Cod League which saw him rank fourth in the league with a 1.80 ERA and elevate his draft potential, will be looked upon to not only provide leadership but also quality innings for the College. The Vienna, Va., native had a successful sophomore campaign in Williamsburg, posting a 3-1 record in his 11 appearances. The starting rotation will be led by senior hurler Jeremy Neustifter, who pitched well in 25 appearances in Earning seven starts last season, the Arvada, Colo., native really turned it on late in the season, finishing with Jeremy Neustifter a 4-3 record with 47 strikeouts in just over 59 innings pitched. This season, Neustifter will be looked upon to be the likely Friday starter in conference play after seeing primarily Sunday starts a season ago. Joining Neustifter in the starting rotation will be a sophomore and three pitchers seeing their first collegiate action. Sophomore Logan Billbrough could be used either as a primary or secondary starter and will look to improve off a solid rookie campaign that saw him finish the year with a 2-2 record and 15 strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Reid Killen will be counted on to be solid on the mound this year and give the Tribe a number of quality starts after returning from injury. True freshmen Cole Shain and Chris Yates will also be counted on in the first years to chew up some innings for the College. Both boast impressive prep resumes, and Leoni will count on them to solidify the starting rotation. Along with Landry, the Tribe s bullpen will feature Truxell, as well as sophomore Tim Norton and freshmen Matt Davenport, Jay McCarthy, and Garrison Sarrett. Truxell will look to improve on his solid numbers from one year ago. Truxell finished the season with a 4-2 record in his 16 appearances. Norton, who earned All-CAA Rookie honors a year ago, will look to break-out this season after going 4-4 for the Green and Gold and striking out 25 in The three freshmen hurlers will be counted on by Leoni to have steady first years, with both Davenport and McCarthy showing potential in the fall as being able to play more prominent roles both as spot starters as well as in the bridge and secondary-starting roles. I like the direction we re headed with our pitching, Leoni said. We did a nice job in the fall, and I believe we will have improved depth to keep arms fresh for the long haul this season. Schedule Once again this season, the Tribe will face a number of very difficult non-conference games that will surely provide a very challenging beginning to the year. The College will open the season hosting the DeMarini First Pitch Classic, welcoming Buffalo and Iona to Plumeri Park February The Tribe will then travel to participate in the Wake Forest Invitational on February 27 through March 1, taking on Miami (Ohio), Farleigh Dickinson, and the host Demon Deacons. Other notable non-conference games include contests with ACC foes Virginia (Feb. 24) and Virginia Tech (April 21) Outlook Rob Nickle Beginning this season, the CAA will now have a new cycle in conference play. This new eight weekend hybrid format allows for more non-conference opportunities at the beginning of the season. Over each of the next five years, the College will miss two CAA opponents, this season being VCU and Delaware. The Tribe will host Georgia State to open conference play on March 20 at 7 p.m., which will mark the 10-year anniversary of Plumeri Park. In 2009, the Green and Gold will play 33 of its 56 games in the friendly confines of Plumeri Park, where the Tribe was a remarkable 26-6 last year. Since beginning play there in 1999, W&M is at home. Following regular-season play, the top six teams will advance to the CAA Tournament, which will be held on May in Wilmington, N.C. to determine the conference s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. 7

Head Coach Frank Leoni Two years of hard work both recruiting and teaching paid off handsomely in 2008 for head coach Frank Leoni and his Tribe, as the squad won the second-most games in school history and reached the semifinals of the CAA Championship. Now entering his fourth year at the helm for William and Mary, Leoni looks to establish the Tribe as perennial championship contenders and NCAA participants. Since arriving in Williamsburg prior to the 2006 season, Leoni has quickly and successfully rebuilt the team. After putting together a winning mark in 2007, the 2008 team surpassed all expections in piecing together a record, only one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a season, and sending four players into the professional ranks in the MLB draft. The Tribe posted an outstanding 26-6 mark at Plumeri Park, and finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association with a record. Returning to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2004, the Tribe handed No. 1-seed UNC Wilmington only its fifth loss of the year to a conference team, and was one of the last four teams standing in the semifinal round. One of the nation s most dangerous teams at the plate, W&M finished the year ranked third in the NCAA with a.343 batting average, and also led the CAA in fielding defense for the second year in a row. In 2007, the squad posted a mark and boasted a record at Plumeri Park. Additionally, the Tribe led the Colonial Athletic Association in team batting average (.319) and fielding percentage (.969). The season also marked a milestone for Leoni, who earned his 300th career win when the Tribe defeated Towson, 6-0, on March 18. In addition to the success experienced by the team collectively, a number of individuals posted impressive seasons under Leoni s tutelage. Leading the group in 2007 was Greg Sexton, who was selected to five All-America teams after finishing the season ranked second nationally with a.455 batting average. Honored as the CAA co-player of the Year, Sexton was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the first pick of the 10th round. The selection marked the fifth consecutive season in which Leoni had a player drafted, as Joe Kantakevich was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round in 2006 and Rhode Island sent at least one player to the professional ranks in each of Leoni s last three seasons. Commensurate with the team s success, several players had outstanding individual seasons in 2008 as well. Mike Sheridan followed up his 2007 campaign by leading the team and the league in batting, and was rewarded with third-team All-American honors from the ABCA and Louisville Slugger, in addition to being named W&M s first VaSID State PLayer of the Year, first-team all-region, All- ECAC, All-CAA, all-state, and to the Wallace Award Watch List, Howser Trophy Watch List, and the CAA all-tournament team. Sheridan would go on to become the first of four Tribe players taken in the MLB Draft, being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the first pick of the fifth round. Along with Sheridan, both catcher Tim Park and outfielder Ben Guez earned All-American honors, giving the Tribe three All-Americans in one season for the first time ever. Park was a third-team selection by Louisville Slugger and made three Player of the Year watch lists, while Guez was tabbed by the Jewish Sports Review with first-team honors and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round. A hallmark of Leoni-coached team is tenacious, fundamentally sound hitting. After earning CAA All-Freshman Team accolades in 2006, first baseman Mike Sheridan continued to improve with Leoni s guidance and was honored as the 2007 NCAA statistical champion for the toughest player to strikeout. With just five strikeouts in 209 at-bats, he finished the year with a ratio of just one strikeout per every 41.8 at-bats. The impressive figure represents the nation s best mark since Sheridan is the second player to accomplish the feat under Leoni s tutelage. In 2001, All-America shortstop Mike LaBarbera led the nation with just five strikeouts in 198 at-bats. During his initial season in Williamsburg, Leoni guided a relatively inexperienced W&M club to a record overall and an mark in CAA play. Despite the modest record, the College improved consistently throughout the season and finished the year by winning 10 of its final 13 contests, missing the CAA playoffs by just a single game. During the impressive stretch run, the Green and Gold claimed three of its final four conference series and was playing as well as any team in the league. In addition to rebuilding the product on the field, Leoni has been instrumental in a number of upgrades to Plumeri Park. While the facility already ranked among the best in the region, the minor renovations have enhanced the park. Among the upgrades were natural grass base lines on each foul line, a 10-foot artificial turf halo added behind the home plate area, bi-level wooden benches in the dugouts and stadium padding on the backstop. Leoni came to the College after a long and successful stint as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island, where he was the The Leoni Family winningest coach in the school s history. A URI graduate, Leoni guided the Rams for 13 seasons and led the program to unprecedented success. In addition to compiling a record during his final five seasons, he led the squad to two consecutive Atlantic 10 regular-season championships and three consecutive Atlantic 10 East Division championships. In 2005, Rhode Island posted a mark and earned the program s initial NCAA Tournament berth after claiming the A-10 title. Under Leoni s watch, the Rams earned at least 24 wins in each of his last seven seasons and compiled a conference record of from During his tenure with URI, Leoni posted an overall record of In 2004, he led the Rams to a school-record 35 victories and a 20-4 mark in A-10 play, becoming just the second school in league history to win 20 conference games. His accomplishments did not go unrecognized, as he was named the A-10 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Additionally, he garnered New England Coach of the Year accolades for his efforts. We are really excited to have Frank Leoni as our new baseball coach, W&M Athletics Director Terry Driscoll said at the time of Leoni s hiring in August, His 13 years at the University of Rhode Island demonstrated his ability to overcome the challenges necessary to build a program to an NCAA-caliber competitor. In that same period, his teams demonstrated tremendous academic success. Together, his academic and athletic success makes him a terrific fit for the College of William and Mary and its baseball program. I am extremely honored to become the next head baseball coach at William 8

This is a tremendous opportunity, and I thank Terry Driscoll and the entire William and Mary community for their confidence. I am excited to get started and to build upon the tradition of William and Mary baseball. My plan for Tribe Baseball is to build a program in which every studentathlete, coach, administrator and alumnus feels a strong sense of ownership and pride, Leoni said. In the long-term, my goal is for William and Mary to become the model baseball program in the CAA - one which enjoys exceptional on-field success without compromising the educational mission of its studentathletes. Coupled with his team s success, Leoni oversaw the development of a number of players who continued their baseball careers in the professional ranks. Four of Leoni s players were drafted from , while two others signed professional contracts. In 2005, pitcher Zack Zuercher was drafted in the ninth round by the Saint Louis Cardinals. Additionally, third baseman Mike Rainville and closer Mick Lefort signed free agent contracts with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively. Following the 2004 season, second-team All-America first baseman Dan Batz was a sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers. That came on the heels of pitchers Reid Willett (Chicago Cubs, 21st round) and Jared Trout (Oakland Athletics, 28th round) getting drafted following the 2003 season. Another of Leoni s top recruits at URI, Stephen Homes, was selected by the New York Mets during the fifth round of the 2006 MLB draft. In 2001, shortstop Mike LaBarbera earned All-America status and signed with the Montreal Expos. While the accomplishments on the field are impressive, Leoni s commitment to developing student-athletes who excel in the classroom is also notable. At Rhode Island, he coached two District I Academic All-Americans and four Academic All-Conference selections during his final three years. The tradition of success has continued at W&M, as Sexton and Jeff Lunardi 05 have each earned Academic All-District III acclaim. Additionally, the 05 URI team and 06 W&M squad were recognized among the top 10 percent of all D-I programs for the Academic Progress Rating (APR). Not only was Leoni a presence on the field, he had a positive impact on the Rhode Island community. He ran several clinics for local children, and his summer camps were among the most popular in New England. The Cranston, Rhode Island, native was an A-10 All-Academic performer as a shortstop for the Rams and held six school records at the conclusion of the 1991 season. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1990 and completed work on his master s degree in Business Administration from URI in He and his wife Kerri have two daughters: Karsen, seven, and Casey, four. 9

Assistant Coaches A former pitcher for head coach Frank Leoni at the University of Rhode Island, Jad Prachniak is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at William and Mary. Prachniak serves as the Tribe s pitching coach and assists with recruiting. Over the past three years, he has been instrumental in developing three MLB Draft picks, including Sean Grieve and Pat Kantakevich last spring (Pat s brother, Joe, was a 13th-round pick in 2006). Overall, pitchers under Prachniak s tutelage account for 30 entries in the W&M all-time top-10 lists, and five school records. Prior to joining the College s staff, Prachniak was a volunteer assistant for Leoni at Rhode Island. During that time, he also served as the pitching coach at The Prout School. Prachniak was a four-year letterwinner with the Rams from and compiled a career record of 3-5. During his junior season, he earned a 2-1 mark with a 3.48 ERA, the lowest among URI starting pitchers. Additionally, he limited the opposition to a teambest.243 batting average and helped propel the Rams to the Atlantic 10 Eastern Division Championship. As a senior, Prachniak served as a captain and helped lead the squad to the Atlantic 10 regular-season title. That season he also received a Scholar-Athlete Award from the Rhode Island House of Representatives. At The Prout School, Prachniak was part of the highly regarded coaching staff that was honored as the Rhode Island Division III Coaching Staff of the Year. Prachniak earned a bachelor s of science degree in kinesiology from Rhode Island in Fifth-year senior Jeff Wera makes the move from behind the plate to the dugout this season as the team s student assistant after completing three years of eligibility in-uniform for the Tribe. A catcher for the Green and Gold during his career, Wera will coordinate the bullpen while beginning his apprenticeship with Leoni and the staff. Wera s most prolific season came in 2007, when he earned 23 starts and came in as a reserve in three more games while helping the Tribe posting a winning record for the first time in his career. He opened the campaign with a solo home run against Rutgers on Feburary 17, and would finish with 11 RBI and a.221 average. As a redshirt-junior in 2008, Wera helped the Tribe win the second-most number of games in school history. He started against Richmond on February 26, batting in one of the College s twelve runs in a 12-3 road victory. Wera came to the College from Beechwood High School in Kentucky, where he was named the Division II Player of the Year as a senior. He earned four letters in baseball, batting.442 for his career with 96 RBI and 133 runs scored. Wera also earned three letters in football, excelling both as a quarterback and an all-state defensive end. As a senior, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year by the Cincinnati Enquirer. Wera is currently working towards the completion of a bachelors degree in neuroscience. 10

Former William and Mary standout infielder Kyle Padgett was hired as a full-time assistant this winter and will begin his second season on Leoni s coaching staff this spring. Padgett assists primarily with the hitters and outfielders, while his game duties include serving as the third base coach. Additionally, he assists with administrative and field maintenance duties. In 2008, Padgett helped coach the Tribe to the nation s third-best batting average and a record, one win shy of the program s alltime mark. After completing a season as the volunteer assistant, he was hired as an assistant at Wake Forest, where he spent the fall semester before returning to Williamsburg. After a stellar career at the College, Padgett was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He played Assistant Coaches most of the 2005 season with the Gulf Coast League Marlins before spending the majority of the following season with the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. Padgett was a member of the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League in Padgett finished his career at W&M with a.288 batting average, 18 home runs, 138 RBI and 132 runs scored. He ranks ninth on the program s all-time list for games played (196) and 10th in games started (178). Padgett s best season came as a senior when he hit.311 with nine home runs, 52 RBI and 46 runs scored. A native of Needham, Massachusetts, Padgett graduated from the College with a bachelors of science degree in kinesiology. All-American Tim Park returns to Plumeri Park as a volunteer assistant coach after one of the greatest seasons in school history in 2008, and will work the team s catchers and coach at first base during games. The Tribe s main catcher over the last two seasons, Park finished the regular season ranked among the top-20 players nationally in hits, batting average, and doubles, and earned third-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. Named to the watch lists for the Dick Howser Trophy, Johnny Bench Award, and Brooks Wallace award near the end of the season, Park also earned first-team all-state and second-team All-East Region and All-CAA honors. He held three school records upon graduating: doubles in a season, hitting 26 in 2008; career batting average (.405) and career slugging percentage (.668). In 2007, Park led the CAA with 64 runs scored and ranked second with 86 hits to garner first-team all-conference accolades. Park was also recognized with all-region, All-ECAC, and all-state awards. Prior to joining the Tribe, Park was a firstteam All-American and Academic All-American at Montgomery Community College in Germantown, Maryland. As a sophomore, he led Montgomery to the Region XX Division III Championship. Park graduated from W&M in the fall of 2008 with a bachelors of arts degree in history. 11

ATHLETIC SUCCESS The season was another strong year for the College, as Tribe teams added four more CAA titles to bring the school s all-time league-leading total to 92. W&M also had eight different program s represented at the NCAA Championship level in some capacity. The men s cross country squad won its eighth consecutive CAA crown in the fall, while the women s cross country team won its fi fth straight. The women s track and fi eld team won its seventh CAA Championship in the last eight years, while the women s tennis team added its 20th all-time CAA crown in the 23-year history of the league during the spring. In total, W&M had fi ve conference players of the year, fi ve conference scholar-athletes of the year, 18 All-Americans and 100 athletes earned all-conference honors in their respective sports during the season. Individually, the women s tennis doubles team of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic garnered All-America honors by advancing to the quarterfi nals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Moulton-Levy also became the fi rst Tribe athlete and only the fourth in CAA history to win conference player of the year honors for a fourth time. Katie Radloff, who garnered CAA Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Championships honors for the second straight season, earned a spot in the NCAA Swimming Championships for the second time in as many years. Christo Laundry earned All-America honors for the third time in cross country and also won the CAA Individual Championship. Women s soccer player Claire Zimmeck garnered CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and was a semifi nalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Additionally, Emily Anderson earned All-America honors with a fi fthplace fi nish in the 1,500m, marking the best Tribe fi nish in 14 years. 35 ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The Tribe s athletic accomplishments do not come at the expense of its student-athlete s academic responsibilities, as W&M ranked fourth, the highest of any athletic scholarship-granting school and of any public school, among the Division I teams when the NCAA released its inaugural Academic Progress Rate scores in The men s gymnastics team was named the National Academic Champions in after posting a grade-point average of It is the fourth national academic title for the program, which also won the award in 1991, 1992, and In a recent NCAA survey on graduation rates, William and Mary athletic teams set the standard for academic excellence 13 teams graduated 100 percent of their players. The overall graduation rate for our athletes is 96 percent (higher than 86 percent for the entire student body). There have been 45 student athletes elected to Phi Beta Kappa in the past 10 years. Four Rhodes Scholars were W&M student-athletes. The College s Athletics Department showed a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 86 percent among its student-athletes who entered school on athletics scholarships in the athletics year in data released by the NCAA in 2007, better than any other school in the state of Virginia or in the CAA. In , the CAA created a Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in each of its sports, and not surprisingly, W&M has set the pace with 27 winners in the six-year history of the award.

William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 21 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commitment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last fi ve years. Among W&M s recent projects was the construction of the $11 million, 30,000- square foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center, which was dedicated this past June. In recent years, the College has hosted NCAA tournament events for football and women s tennis, while a number of other W&M programs have hosted conference championships at Tribe venues. Recent upgrades at Plumeri Park include bi-level wooden benches in the dugouts, a new digital scoreboard, a 10-foot artifi cial turf halo behind home plate, stadium padding on the backstop, and natural grass baselines along the foul lines.

Athletics Director Terry Driscoll TERRY Driscoll Athletics Director Under the steady guidance and watchful eye of Terry Driscoll, the William and Mary Athletics Department has solidified its standing as one of the nation s preeminent broad-based programs. As Driscoll enters his 13th year as athletics director, he has overseen an unprecedented era of improvement in terms of funding and facilities while also maintaining the College s rich history of producing wellrounded student-athletes. Driscoll oversees a program that is committed to balancing academic demands with athletic success. One of the department s stated goals each year is to finish among the top 100 in the annual Director s Cup rankings, which has happened in all but one of the years that Driscoll has been the director. In the last five years alone, the Tribe s program has combined for a total of 23 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) titles. This past season, W&M claimed four CAA titles (Men s and Women s Cross Country, Women s Track & Field and Women s Tennis). As recently as , W&M had a school-record 10 teams compete in the NCAA Tournament, with four teams winning conference titles and six that finished in the top 25 at the end of their respective seasons. Overall, no institution in the CAA can claim more all-time league championships than the 92 William and Mary has earned. As impressive as the athletic accomplishments have been during Driscoll s tenure, the program s academic successes have been even greater. In the NCAA s inaugural (2004) APR rankings, a measurement of academic progress based on academic eligibility, retention, and graduation of student-athletes, W&M was fourth in the nation overall and first among institutions offering athletic performance-based scholarships. Additionally, the Tribe football team has posted a 100 percent graduation rate three times, while the majority of the program s squads have consistently ranked among the nation s finest in terms of graduation. In 2002, the CAA started recognizing Scholar- Athletes of the Year for each of the 22 sports it sponsors, and the College has had a conference-high 26 individuals receive the honor. In addition to the many academic and athletic successes, Driscoll s impact on the program has been equally impressive in terms of physical and financial improvements. Since taking over as athletics director, Driscoll has overseen the construction of more than $20 million in new facilities, including Plumeri Park (baseball), Albert- Daly Field (soccer, lacrosse) and the Busch Courts (tennis). Most recently, the College dedicated a new $11 million, 30,000 square-foot Jimmye Laycock Football Center at Zable Stadium in the summer of During the last three years, the venerable stadium has been enhanced with an $800,000-plus video scoreboard (2007), the installation of a $650,000 permanent lighting system (2006) and an $840,000 state-of-the-art Field Turf Pro artificial playing surface (2006). In addition to the physical structures, Driscoll has also worked with the Associate Athletics Director for Development, Bobby Dwyer, to increase the annual fund-raising totals for non-capital projects from $1.36 million in 1995 to the current annual total of approximately $2.7 million. A true student-athlete himself, Driscoll s leadership skills were developed during his collegiate years. As a student-athlete at Boston College, Driscoll captained the basketball team to the National Invitation Tournament Finals as a senior, and was named the tournament MVP. In addition to being named an All-American, his success in the classroom as a biology major garnered him an Academic All-America honor. After graduating from BC, he was the fourth overall pick of the 1969 NBA Draft, selected by the Detroit Pistons, just three spots after the Milwaukee Bucks chose UCLA s Lew Alcindor, later to be known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Driscoll chose to play a year in Italy first, but then returned to the U.S. to play for the Pistons, Washington Bullets and Milwaukee Bucks before going back to Italy as a player and then coach until Driscoll then entered the corporate world in 1980, working for Kazmaier Associates, Inc., an international sporting goods sales and sports marketing firm. After Kazmaier purchased Bike Athletic in 1986, KSG Inc. was formed with the objective of becoming the first, and only, national sales agency in the sporting goods industry. By 1987, Driscoll was president of the company and had expanded the agency to all 50 states just two years later. In early 1990, Driscoll s contribution to a marketing research project for the NCAA was the initial step moving him from product marketing and sales to sports marketing and management. The result of the project was a joint venture between Kazmaier Associates and Host Communications - with Driscoll being named managing director and chief operating officer of NCAA International. In 1993, Driscoll diversified his experience in the athletic world by working as the venue executive director of the 1994 World Cup site in Boston. In September of that year, Driscoll was again enlisted to launch a new business, Eagle International Group, an event management and services company. As vice president, Driscoll worked with Hawaii Pacific Sports to organize the Women s World Volleyball Grand Prix competition in Honolulu. Driscoll resides in Williamsburg with his wife, Susan. The couple has two children Keith, a 1997 graduate of Holy Cross, and Leslie, a 2001 graduate of William and Mary.
