2 TEAM IOWA ~ Tom & Sue Wright District Directors Hi everyone we hope everyone has had a chance to get out and when the weather has been satisfactory, while we were in Florida Last week at the Florida District Rally it was hard to look out and see all those Bikes and Trikes running around but I m confident now that we are back the weather will get better with a lot of good riding ahead. Speaking of riding don t forget registration is available for the Iowa District Rally it is on line at so if you are planning on going don t forget to register early so we know how many to expect. Also remember it is going to be held in Dubuque, Iowa on September 25 th and 26 th and yes this is a Sunday Monday. With all the fantastic riding in the area I m sure it will be a great event. The District Team is busy looking for great roads and places to eat while out on rides during the Rally as this will be another wonderful Riding Rally not to say there won t be a lot to do at the Rally site. We have sent out the tentative schedule to your Chapter Directors and have asked them to send it out to the members we will be adding it to the District website which is stated above. You will notice there is not a Light Parade scheduled, we don t feel that it would be a safe place to have one with all of the traffic in and around Dubuque so there will not be a light show either, we will not be having a Bike Show this year either with the shortened schedule. We will however have Couple and Individual of the year on Sunday evening, followed by the Iowa District Talent Show, we believe this will be quite entertaining for all, this will also determine who will get their charter fees paid for As I understand it Chapters I and F will be having Off Bike Games again this year. As you can see things are starting to come together for fun filled Iowa District Rally. Thanks for all you do Tom & Sue Wright Iowa District Directors

3 TEAM IOWA ~ Tom & Sue Wright District Directors The Ralph Swank Award is Iowa s most prestigious award to be given to an individual or couple. A little history about the award: Ralph Swank was responsible for bringing GWRRA to Iowa in He was a strong backer for GWRRA he participated in almost every rally and function that involved GWRRA. Do to his health he retired his bike and membership around June After this time, he did participate in several Gold Wing Events as an announcer, Ralph was the announcer at the 1988 Region E Rally in Waverly, Iowa we believe this was the last Rally attended by Ralph. In 1988, Bob Main, State Director of GWRRA at the time, announced the start of the Ralph Swank Award at the Iowa State Firecracker Rally in Grinnell, Iowa. This award was given to someone in the state who showed a strong desire to support and further the growth of GWRRA in IOWA and to be of help to anyone in need of information on the program. The award says In recognition of outstanding service to GWRRA and motorcycling in general the award was founded in There have been 28 such awards presented to this time including Ralph Swank. 5 TEAM IOWA ~ John & Yvette Moravec Assistant District Directors John and I are ramping up for riding season. We're both working on reservations for travels we have planned to NY in June and CA in October. John has been checking on wiring and overall maintenance on a trailer we've recently acquired to haul our stuff on those travels. He is going to do a thorough T-CLOCK inspection of our bike(s) before our riding season gets fully under way. Now is the best time to do just that instead of having something go wrong when we are several miles away and have to have others in our group wait on us can be time consuming as well as embarrassing. I also like to check out maps for our local area for mapping out ice cream and weekend rides for our chapter. Lots of beautiful roads are available in Iowa for riding. If you have a GPS, there is still time to learn one of several route planning programs available. I use Base Camp by Garmin but there are others out there. Check them out. Start planning out your riding season with your household calendar. Ours is already filling up fast. Have you gotten with Doug Boemecke to get registered for Safety weekend in Ankeny on May 13-14? That weekend is also the time to get your first aid / CPR training completed. If you haven't signed up yet, those classes are filling up fast. We will be there on Saturday. We also recommend, if your chapter hasn't had the road captain course in the last couple years, to get one scheduled. Also, check to see what other chapter's have on the district schedule, maybe there is a class already scheduled you can join. It is a lot of fun and you will meet new friends while learning to be a safer group rider. Yvette & John Moravec ADD's

6 TEAM IOWA ~ Doug & Mary Ann Boemecke Senior District Educators Start seeing Motorcycles Are you a Prepared Rider Both of these statements apply to all of us. When you are driving your 4 wheeled vehicle is your Handicapped sign hanging from your rearview mirror so it hinders your vision? How many times do you look in both directions before leaving from a stop sign or parking lot exit? Are you still texting or talking on a cell phone while driving? Has that new medication you took this morning made you drowsy? Did your spouse really tick you off this morning enough to keep you upset all day? Are your windows clean and are your outside mirrors angled properly? All of these distractions and hindrances can keep you from Seeing Motorcycles. When was the last time you took a motorcycle riding course? Did you go to an empty parking lot or riding range this Spring before doing any street riding? Did you do a thorough mechanical inspection of your bike or trike before it even left the garage? As you gave it the first bath of the season, did you take the time to make sure all fasteners were tight? What about tires, they lost air pressure over the Winter, did you pump them up to the recommended pressure? About those tires, as you travel to Wing Ding and places beyond, how often are you going to check your tires? Every morning when the tires are cool, or at a minimum every other morning is recommended by a Wise Man. When you take the cover off the bike, put it on the ground by the rear wheel so you have something to lay on while you check that rear tire for air pressure and possible damage. If you haven t already registered for Safety Weekend, there still might be time. As you consider all of these things, you may be on your way to being a Prepared Rider. In Iowa for 2014, there were 51 fatal motorcycle crashes and 811 injury crashes. In Illinois there were 116 fatal crashes and 2,418 injury crashes. Of all motorcycle crashes involving more than one vehicle, 75 % are attributed to a motorist not seeing the motorcycle. These figures show that as we ride in very populated areas our risk of accident and injury increases. They also prove that we are an unnoticed and unappreciated minority. Our destiny is in our hands. We have to become more visible, more alert, better prepared, and ready to train the public at every opportunity. A Wise Man once said; SAFE today, ALIVE tomorrow. We were fortunate to get a couple short teaser rides in March. There is nothing better than that wind therapy! We ventured out a couple weeks ago and visited McGrath Powersports. Their staff is so excited for the Region Rally in June. They talked at length about their ideas and listened to some additional input. We hope all of you will try to attend this great event since it is so close and we can support our COY Pete and Cheryl Sayers. Congratulations to all the newly selected COY and IOY recipients! We will contact you in the near future to line up a mini photography session. We hope all of you can attend the District Rally in September where you will be recognized prior to the COY and IOY selection process. As I am writing this, we are on our way to Reno for a little vacation and the National Bowling Tournament. Hopefully by the time you read this I will be able to tell you we bowled awesome! Ha! On Friday 5/13 for the ERC class there are 3 Rider plus Co-Rider spots open. On Friday 5/13 for the Trike class, there are 4 Rider plus Co-Rider spots open. On Friday 5/13 the CPR class is full. On Saturday 5/14 for the ARC class there are 10 Rider plus Co-Rider spots open. On Saturday 5/14 for the Trike class, there are 3 Rider plus Co- Rider spots open. 13 2016 Iowa District Chapter Challenge Hello Iowa Chapter Directors and Chapter members. Here is what you have all been waiting for. We will be having a Talent Show at the rally this year. You and your Chapter providing the talent, that s right you read it correctly. It will be held right after the Couple and Individual of the year selection is over. The Judges will be whomever Roxie and Chief have chosen for the Couple and Individual of the year selection. It can be a skit, dance, or you can sing. In other words, anything you wish it to be. Tom and Sue Wright District Directors Rules for the Chapter Challenge 1. It must be in good taste, in other words if your Children or Grandchildren were to be present you wouldn t mind if they were watching. 2. It must be done in 10 minutes or less. 3. Five or more Chapter Members must participate. 4. No bribing the Judges, just kidding LOL. 5. Most important of all is just have fun.
