Hope you all had a very enjoyable Christmas with family and friends and are now ready for a busy, fun packed year of rowing. First training day this year is 7 th February and I look forward to seeing everyone again. Happy rowing Yvonne. 2 All Ability Rowing Relay Queen Street Mall, Brisbane Thursday December 3 rd, 2015 At 10 o clock this morning 3 rowing machines finally stopped spinning after 3 hours of relay rowing by disabled members of Sporting Wheelies, Vision Australia and LifeStream Australia. This morning s relay row on the Queen Street Mall was held to coincide with the International Day of People with Disability showing the ABILITY of people and how capable they are living an active and healthy lifestyle. Wade Ruffin of Urban Rowing in Brisbane conceived the idea after working with LifeStream Australia and Rowing Queensland s Peter Hicks teaching intellectually impaired secondary students to row on the rowing machine and in Urban Rowing s rowing tank. 8 weeks from the conception of the idea we had around 30 members from the partner organisations grinding up and down the rowing machines covering just over 38,000metre on each rowing machine. They were ably supported by 14 celebrity sportspeople coming from the Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Women s Roar Soccer team, Water Polo Olympians and our very own QAS and Australian Rowers Jess Hall, Tessa Carty, Darcy Wruck and Maddy Edmunds. They really showed the audience an exemplary display of rowing power completing 10 x 1000m pieces at near maximum effort. Jaw dropping stuff. The Minister for Disability Services Coralee O Rourke and the State Minister for Greenslopes Joe Kelly also attended and rowed in the relay event. Wade Ruffin Urban Rowing

April will be very busy on the Sunshine Coast with the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships hosted by Maroochydore, Alex and Mooloolaba Surf Clubs and the Easter holidays. If somebody else would like to organise and run a Training Day at another venue during April, please let Wendy or Yvonne know. Wendy will probably have a Paddling and Rowing Party at her place during the school holidays.

5 AROUND THE WORLD WITH BRONWYN Touring the world November to December 2015 My travels took me to South America at the end of I did two tours. 'Essence of South America' and 'Mexico in Depth'. Highlights of the first tour included the Amazon rainforest, Cusco, Lima, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Iguassu Falls and Buenos Aires. Highlights of the second tour included Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas, Palenque, the Gulf of Mexico and Chichen Itza. I saw lots of cathedrals and climbed lots of pyramids. Learned about the Incas, Aztecs, and Mayan people. Drank beer, pisco sours, caipirinha, mezcal and margueritas. Ate Alpaca, Guinea Pig and fried Grasshoppers. Acquired and spoke Spanish. Essence of South America Peru My companion on the first tour was Lesley Haig and I think we both thoroughly enjoyed both what we saw along the way and the people with whom we travelled. Most of our fellow companions were from the Sunshine Coast. Wonderful people. I was hooked instantly when we flew into Puerto Maldonado. I loved the heat, the humidity, the people and the Tambopata lodge where we stayed on the river. My first impression was the way the people lived in Puerto Maldonado. Such a poor part of the world. Basic housing, dusty roads, and not much electricity or water. Everyone drives around on motor bikes or three wheeled motorcycle rickshaw taxis. No helmets. Our lodge was in the jungle. Mosquito nets over the bed, no electricity - candle light after dark. There was a generator operating in the bar at night so we could charge our devices. We spent a lot of time in the bar and I took up drinking beer because it was too hot to drink wine. Trekking through the jungle makes you tired. I slept well and was woken in the morning by the Howler monkeys. So many different birds, and animals to see in the jungle. On our last night we went fishing with our guides to catch piranha. We caught catfish instead. Cusco and Lima are amazing huge cities. Cusco was my favourite. I ate Alpaca for lunch in Cusco. Very tasty. I tried guinea pig too but that little head staring at me from the plate sort of turned me off. Don't think I will be doing that again. The markets were another highlight with an array of goodies to purchase including hard boiled quail eggs, roasted guinea pigs, snakes, dragon blood, cow - horse - donkey snouts (not sure what you do with the snouts). Our next stop was Machu Picchu. This is an amazing place! Beautiful, magical and high up in the Andes. Very proud of myself for trekking up to the Sun Gate which is 2745 mtrs above sea

6 level. A very hard climb from Machu Picchu itself but well worth it for the view along the way and again at the top. Lake Titicaca is beautiful and huge. I didn't realise it was so big. It is the largest lake in the world above 2000m. Gorgeous views and we could see snow on the peaks across to Bolivia. Brazil First stop Rio. Playground for the young and beautiful. Copacabana Beach, Sugar Mountain, Christ the Redeemer. Exciting!! Iguazu Falls. We saw the falls from the Brazilian side. Amazing. And then we saw the falls from the Argentinian side. Absolutely amazing!! The highlight was walking out along a very long boardwalk to where you could see the water just disappearing into the earth - and that is just what it did. We were standing on a huge water fall. Words can't describe it. Leaves Niagara for dead. We rode on a speedboat which careens down the river and then under the falls. Wet!!!! Buenos Aires. Loved Buenos Aires. Explored the city. A city I could live in. Fell in lust with the guy who owned the bar next to our hotel. Had to take myself home one night so I wouldn't have to have his babies! Mexico in depth Mexico, another huge city. A highlight was the National Palace. The gardens are amazing and the view across Mexico is stunning. Dinner with a Mariachi band and I even danced. Salsa! Puebla, Oaxaca, San Cristobal, Palenque. Amazing smaller cities built around grand plazas. Lots of markets to shop in and spend your money. The plaza in Puebla was decorated for Christmas and I was woken in the morning by the cathedral bells playing the little drummer boy. In Oaxaca we had lunch in the marketplace where the meat has been sundried and then barbequed. It is served on tortillas with your choice of vegetables. In San Cristobal we shopped for silver. In Palenque we were back in the jungle with the steamy heat and the Howler monkeys. Love it!! Gulf of Mexico. We swam in the gulf and relaxed by a pool that overlooked the gulf and relaxed for the afternoon. Enjoyed the swimming in the gulf until someone pointed out that they could feel fish swimming around their legs. I was gone. I did do some kayaking in the gulf and I participated in some swim races (which I suggested) and beat everyone except one of the guys. He should have had a handicap!! Our final part of the tour was a visit to Chichen Itza. Wasn't that impressed. The main pyramid is the one you see in all the post cards and then it's mostly merchants trying to sell their wares. Finished our tour in Playa del Carmen. Touristy and, again, a place for the young and beautiful. Can't really compare to our beautiful Sunny Coast!!!

7 Unfortunately, two of our fantastic raffle ladies, Cecily and Val, are not able to collect the donated prizes and organise them for the raffles on the 2 days of the QLD Indoor Rowing Championships this year. Thank you both for your inspirational & generous work. In true form they have again offered to help sell raffle tickets on one of the days. WANTED - 2 ladies or gentlemen, who could take over this very important task for the Indoor Rowing Club. No previous experience required. Good people skills and friendly personalities a bonus. You also get to meet lots of very interesting and inspirational rowers and supporters and you help raise lots of money to enable the Indoor Rowing Club to host the QLD Championships. 8 Hi Indoor Rowing Club members, I will be attending the session on Wednesday, 17 th February at the Lake Kawana Community Centre at 5 pm. Hopefully some other members might be able to come along as well. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council for the grant of $500, they have already given the Indoor Rowing Club to help promote and run the 2016 Championships. 10 2016 QLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS DATE The weekend of the 14 th and 15 th May VENUE Kawana Waters State College Performing Arts Theatre SPECIAL EVENTS Politicians Mixed Relay, Schools Staff Mixed Relay, Corporate Mixed Relay. These events will comprise teams of 4 with an entry fee of $40 per team. There will be a trophy for the first team and medals for first, second and third. The 300 m event will be replaced by a 1-minute event, as that event will be for concept2 records and rankings from The entry form will be on the QLD Indoor Rowing Championships website very soon. Thank you to Gary Stewart. Hi All, some exciting news for everyone involved in the world of Indoor Rowing in Australia. Match from Cooee CrossFit in Western Australia will host their State Championships in June and Jan from Ulverstone Rowing Club in Tasmania will host their event in Mayish. Tamara is very carefully considering hosting the Victorian Indoor Rowing Championships as part of the Erg fit events later in the year! That leaves SA and NT to get on board. I have attached the updated version of the Australian Indoor Rowing Calendar of Events so far. I have cc d Melanie from Concept 2 Australia for Match and Jan to provide dates and location details for the Concept 2 Events Calendar. Please consider the concept of an Australian Indoor Rowing Association, the benefits for funding as a not for profit association rather than an event, means we will have access to funding to help build the sport.
