1 Get paddling Canoe map: alombe Kingsbridge estuar Let the National Trust guide ou on an adventure to disover hidden oves, shipwreks and shores teeming with wildlife all without ever having to leave our anoe.
2 Estuar information An estuar... ria-ll The alombe-kingsbridge estuar is atuall a tidal inlet formed as river-ut valles were flooded b post-glaial rising sea levels. uh flooded river valles are known as rias, or in this instane a dendriti ria as eah reek is itself a ria The original rivers have long gone, leaving all the reeks fed now b small streams. Trust land The National Trust looks after more than 500 ares inside the estuar: from the oastal slopes of Rikham Common, to napes Point whih asts a long shadow over the town of alombe, and the beautiful estuar woodland at Halwell, nestled in the tranuillit of Frogmore Creek, with its aptivating birdlife. Beneath the waves The water beneath our anoe is full of marine life. Although the upper reahes of the reeks are tpiall estuarine, the middle and lower reahes are entirel marine. These unusuall sheltered onditions give rise to a diverse eosstem, inluding a sea-slug thought to be uniue to this estuar, fantasti seagrass beds, rare seaweeds and rih rok gardens of sponges and orals. Relis of the past Close to the estuar mouth sits alombe Castle, a oastal defene built in the 1540s. Despite three sieges and enturies of oastal erosion, the astle stands firm toda. alombe was one an industrial port. The remains of a sawmill at Waterhead Creek, the wrek of the trawler Resolute lose to Kingsbridge, and the man riverside lime kilns are all evidene of a bus past.
3 Launhing sites Launh sites are shown on the map overleaf: those aessible onl at high water are shown in red and all-tide sites in blue-and-ellow. However, when the tide turns these reeks an drain uikl, so hek tide times when planning our trip. Round trip paddle times Kingsbridge to Mill Ba: 3 5 hours; North ands to the altstone: 2 3 hours.
