4 WyCo 4-H Livestock Project: Of Interest is the American Royal By Jessica Cook Congrats to all the kids who exhibited livestock at the 2015 WyCo County Fair. It is so fun to watch these kids grow and change year after year, both inside and outside the show-ring. The County 4-H Fair season just ended and school has resumed, please be informed of some things going on at the American Royal that may be of interest. Wyandotte County has a pretty awesome group of kids that are all willing to work hard and are all so very competitive. One thing that may be good for the kids (especially since most are so young) would be to try and catch some of the shows at the American Royal. Here is the showmanship schedule for all species: Goats Thursday October 22 nd at 1pm in the Goat/Lamb Arena Lambs Friday October 23 rd at 2pm in the Goat/Lamb Arena Swine Saturday October 24 th at 8am in the Swine Arena Mkt Beef Friday October 23 rd at 1pm in Hale Arena Jr Heifer Friday October 30 th at 2:30pm in Hale Arena Full schedule can be found on the American Royal s website I think it would be great for our 4-H Youth to get a chance to see others, their same age, competing on a national level. For the Beef Youth there will be a couple demonstrations going on: Friday October 23 rd at 3pm in the Sale Center there will be a Stierwalt Beef Clinic Thursday October 29 th at 5pm in Hale Arena there will be a McCullough Fitting Clinic Friday October 30 th at 5pm in Hale Arena will be the team fitting contest. I think it would be good for our kids to watch other kids (older and younger) do the work. For those interested in Lambs & Goats, there will be a Stierwalt Lamb & Goat Clinic Thursday, Oct 22nd, at 3pm We have many resources in our county; 4-H alumni, 4-H Parents/Grandparents, and even local stockman, who would all be ready and willing to answer any questions you may have. Whether it be where to buy, how to care for and feed, or how to show, don t hesitate to ask! A common theme among the judge s comments for each species was how they could tell the kids all work hard with their animals and bring quality to the ring. Let s keep that trend going!
5 Chairman of the WyCo 4-H Food Stand Committee Resigns By Debra Sweeten This month marks the end of the 4-H Food Stand Committee Chairmanship for Emily Yantz. She has done an outstanding job shaping the food stand operations for at least the past couple of years. Her energy and devotion to the role will be hard to match. WyCo 4-H thanks Emily for her volunteer work and leadership. We wish to thank Emily and all concession stand volunteers for the excellent contribution they made to the success of the concession stand! We know that a tremendous amount of work was put in, not just during the concession stand s operating hours, but also in the preceding weeks. It is easy to forget just how much preparation and hard work is required to make a concession stand operate successfully. Emily Yantz submitted her letter of resignation from Chairman of the 4-H Food Stand Committee to the WyCo 4-H office on August 27, In the resignation letter, Emily noted that she will be available for information and advice. We extend our appreciation for her service with the WyCo 4-H Food Stand Committee. Congratulations WyCo 4-H Archers! By Cynthia Bird Congratulations to the Wyandotte County 4-H Archers! Sat., Aug. 15, 2015 was the Prairie Center 4-H Archery qualifier hosted by Johnson and Franklin counties. Participants were also able to test their skills in a 3-D style course for fun. Levi Mackey was awarded a 2nd place medal in Compound Bowhunter for his score of 225/240 in the junior age division. Izabelle Koenig was awarded a 3rd place medal for her Recurve Barebow score of 141/240 in the junior division. 7 ! New 4-H Web Pages in Spanish New 4-H Web Pages in Spanish - A Hub of Information for our Spanish-Speaking Families By Aliah Mestrovich Seay With the launch of the new 4-H website, comes new pages uniquely developed for our Spanish-speaking families. All the essential information to get them started in 4-H can be found there. We hope that these pages will make our Spanish speaking families and friends 4-H experience better and easier by having a "one-stop" shop for their 4-H needs. There will be four main sections under the (Información en Español Information in Spanish) tab: Como inscribirse How to enroll Recursos - Resources Clubs de Interés Especial - SPIN Clubs Página de contacto Contact Page Latino(a) families will be able to follow a 4-H Online Spanish video tutorial for enrollment and re-enrollment. Written instructions and consent forms accompany the 4-H Online Tutorial in case the families would like to download them and print them out for future reference. Essential documents like the 4-H Participation Form, Enrollment Form and Project Selection Guide will also be available. Families can learn about SPIN Clubs and have access to The New Family s Guide to 4-H so they can better understand the 4-H experience. In addition, they will be able to browse different subject areas like Gardening, Health, and Agriculture etc at their leisure on the Resources (Recursos) page. If they have additional questions, the Contact Page will provide them with Rosa Gonzalez s direct number since she is the Reaching New Audiences 4-H Program Coordinator in the SW Extension Office. She can answer any initial questions they may have. We are open to any suggestions you have to make the pages better. Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback.!!!!!! Kansas 4-H Award Portfolio (KAP) Record Book Judging October 01 is the submission deadline for WyCo 4-Hers who will be submitting their KAP record book for judging. 4- Hers need to have their record book to the WyCo 4-H Office on or before October 01. Local KAP record book judging will take place at the WyCo Extension Office on October 15, by appointment. The KAP covers only the work of the current year. Include project learning and sharing experiences, leadership and citizenship. You make decisions and choices about what types of information is appropriate to be included and that which best highlights their 4-H year of learning. Growth can be shown in many ways learning to knit with four needles instead of three, increasing your speed in clipping steers, taking over family meal preparations three days a week instead of once a month, stepping up to become a project leader, etc. The KAP gives members have the opportunity to practice decision making skills as one of the 4-H life skills. The 4-H Story is a place to provide additional learning, leadership and citizenship as well. To see a copy of the KAP Evaluation Score Sheet, KAP Q & A, and more: h.org/p.aspx?tabid=476
