2 Atchison Hospital s Best Care Health Fair 2009 coming Saturday Event drew more than 300 people last year and organizers expect even greater turnout this year Atchison Hospital s Best Care Health Fair 2009 will be on Saturday, October 10. This year s health fair will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Atchison Elementary School, 825 N. 17th St. The health fair includes a variety of 48 booths, including community businesses and organization as well as hospital departments. Indoor and Outdoor activities and events make the health fair a family fun day. After participating in just about everything the Chamber does at some point, from ribbon cuttings and the membership drives to the Chamber Golf Classic and the Homes Tour, Sherry has gained much from her experience as an Ambassador. Being an Ambassador has provided our business and myself with the opportunity to develop relationships with other community leaders, she said. Those relationships provide insight to their role in our community. Sherry sums up her role as an Ambassador simply: as a cheerleader for the community. Class size is limited. Call , Donna or stop by Doodlebugs at 720 Commercial for more info and to sign up. 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs includes three Atchison icons Once again, Atchison figures prominently in the Kansas Sampler Foundation s series of 8 Wonders of Kansas contests. Reciting and Chanting the Psalms by the Benedictine Monks at St. Benedict s Her work as executive director of the Atchison Housing Authority has given Sherry plenty of opportunities to be a cheerleader. The Housing Authority s mission is to address affordable housing needs while ensuring that safe, decent and sanitary standards are met. The public entity has recently expanded opportunities in the community with its workforce homeownership housing program. Ironically, Sherry works in the very building that inspired her as a girl. In fact, she and her family attended the dedication for Mall Towers. My family came in to the BIG CITY to be a part of this event, she recalled. I told my mother that some day I was going to work in that big building. Abbey and Ordering a Soda Fountain Treat are among the finalists for the 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs. Ball Bros. Drug and Reynold s Drug both feature old-fashioned soda fountains. Voting for this prestigious honor continues through Oct. 20. You may vote online at or stop by the Chamber, 200 S. 10th St., for a paper ballot. And most importantly, check out these three Kansas landmarks and see what amazing things Atchison has to offer! New programs at Atchison Library The Atchison Library s fall series is underway, following the initial author visit Sept. 29. Authors will visit the library the last Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Book signings will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by a short presentation from the author and a question-and-answer session with the audience. September s author was Tessa Mc- Dermid, a writer of romance books. Jerry Peterson will talk about his mystery, Early s Fall on Oct. 27. There will be a special Saturday event in November in honor of Veteran s Day featuring Sgt. Robert Ellis and his co-author, Marianna Riley, with their book, Caring for Victor. That event is scheduled for Nov. 7. The final event in the fall series is scheduled for Nov. 24. United Way Trivia Contest Do you remember the name of the Jetson s dog? How about their maid? You ll do great in the United Way Trivia Contest! Get your team together and have a great time raising money for the United Way. This exciting event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at the Atchison Heritage Conference Center. The entry fee is $10 per person and you may have up to eight people on a team. Call Terry at to register your team!

4 MEMBER NEWS Theatre to sponsor Night Terrors Theatre Atchison will again sponsor Atchison s Premiere Haunted House, Night Terrors. It will run October 22, 23, 24, 29, 30,31 from 7 pm-until the crowd stops. This year s haunted house is completely different and twice as long - double the terror for your Halloween fun! On Halloween Day this year, we have added a special opportunity for the younger ghouls, goblins and witches (under 12 years old): from 2-4 pm and 6-7 pm we will have a less-scary walk through the haunted house. Those special times have a special price too! From 2-4 pm & 6-7pm on Halloween, tickets are just $2 for everyone. We will not have any of the actors jumping out and the music will be turned down to lessen the scare factor. Night Terrors is located in the old Stein Labs building on the southwest corner of 4th Street and Kansas Avenue, and admission is $5 per person.
