This year s community service project, organized by the Beautification Council, was a banner event, with many more volunteers than last year. In fact, all the city maps used to direct volunteers to their clean-up sites were handed out by 8:20 a.m. The council would like to give a special thanks to the following sponsors: Blish-Mize Company, City of Atchison, Tate Plumbimg & Construction, Unit Rail and Wal-Mart. Additionally, dozens of Atchison High School students volunteered, facilitated by many teachers, and the ACES volleyball team also participated as a group. KAIR, which gave its support and coverage, also earned a special thanks from the council. THANK YOU to all the sponsors and volunteers who made our fall clean up such a success! 2 CHAMBER NEWS A Taste of Atchison Atchison s vibrant downtown scene will be on display Friday, Sept. 25, when the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the first of what it hopes will be an annual Taste of Atchison festival. The event will be held from 5-8 p.m. in the 500 block of Commercial Street in downtown Atchison and includes food provided by local dining establishments, a live band and information about local specialty shops and attractions. The Chamber web site has all the information about A Taste of Atchison, including a listing of all participating dining and shopping destinations at Businesses that would like to get involved are urged to contact Jane Paolucci at or by at projects@atchisonakansas.net. Non-Profit After Hours scheduled for Sept. 24 The Chamber has added a new twist to its After Hours series. In an effort to provide support to the many organizations that serve the Atchison area, the Chamber will host an After Hours showcasing non-profit organizations. The event is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Atchison Heritage Conference Center. Because of limited budgets, non-profit businesses and organizations often struggle to get the word out about the services they offer and the volunteer opportunities available. The Chamber hopes to aid the organizations by giving them a forum to educate the community, increase their volunteer bases and to recruit new members and donors. It is also a way for the Chamber and its membership to show support for organizations that increase the quality of life in Atchison. Shoppers flock to Atchison Shoppers filed into town in droves on Friday and Saturday, as Mary Carol Garrity (top photo, center) hosted her annual Fall Open House and Book Signing at her home in Atchison. Visitors flooded Nell Hill s on The Mall and many other downtown shops and restaurants during the two-day event. Garrity greeted customers and signed copies of her new book, O Christmas Tree. We re very excited to host our first Non-Profit After Hours on Thursday from 5-7 pm at the Atchison Heritage Conference Center. I hope you ll stop by to visit with 25 of Atchison s not-for-profits. These agencies are important to our quality of life we need them this is a great opportunity for you to reaffirm that support them with your presence. And then on Friday, we re planning food, fun and music in the 500 block of the Mall come join us for A Taste of Atchison! We ll have delicious food from many of our local establishments and some fun music from Boomerz. It will be a great evening in downtown Atchison! We hope you will all join us! Have a great week. we hope to see you Thursday and Friday at our After Hours and A Taste of Atchison!
