INSIDE PADUA SPORT Term 4, 2015 Why do Sports Teams Wear Uniforms? One of my constant battles each week is to have the boys wear the correct uniform to sport. I do wonder if they would wear their Padua shorts while playing club AFL, rugby union or football. I highly doubt it. Wearing the correct uniform can say a lot about the individual and team. Below are some thoughts regarding this issue. According to Wikipedia, a uniform means a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization s activity. People generally wearing uniforms are armed forces, police, emergency services, schools and workplaces. Uniform also means to be the same, and without any difference. With these basic ideas in mind the concept of having a common dress came in to picture. If the dress of the members of an organization remains the same then there is a sense on commonality which develops amongst them. Uniforms also depict solidarity, and this has been this way through out, right from the days of the Roman Empire to the modern day manufacturing houses. These days wearing uniform is common with the paramilitary organizations like police etc. and the armed forces. These help them, stand out of the crowd so that they can be easily recognizable and also distinguish them for the service they do. These uniforms not only make them feel proud but also have an imposing effect on others and with the presence of a person in uniform, can change the mood of people around. Reasons why sports teams wear uniforms. 1. A sense of belonging: They share a feeling of commonness and belonging, which otherwise gets very difficult to achieve. 2. A feeling of equality: Uniform brings everyone to the same platform, thus inculcating a feeling of equality amongst those wearing the uniform. 3. Mutual growth: People wearing uniform are more caring for their fellows and colleagues, they care not only for their growth but the growth of their peers as well. Uniforms are very important and fosters traits which are very necessary for a person as an individual and an organization as a whole to thrive and prosper. 4. It is a symbol of what your team stands for. Those team s fan will know the symbol and cheer them. 5. It shows unity. The team or group will be strong. Powerful and unique. It makes the team work and members work together. Sportsman of Padua be proud to wear the colours it s what makes us a team! The main focus over the next week will be the AIC Track and Field Champs (26 and 28 Oct). Many boys have prepared very well and should deliver a great performance next week. Every extra effort will make a difference to the overall outcome. The team will be announced this Thursday on assembly. The Open AFL team will play in the QIS Grand Final this Wednesday against SLC at Yeronga. Mr Laveys team have played some tough and entertaining football and are primed for another top class game this week. Good luck.

The Water Polo teams started their short season last Wednesday against Ashgrove with encouraging results. This week Padua take on SLC with a home pool advantage. The Junior Volleyball team competed in the QLD All Schools last weekend winning 5 from 8 with a few very narrow losses. A great effort against strong Volleyball Schools. Thanks to Mr Nicholson and the boys who prepared and played well. We have lots of activity at the moment (who said Term 4 was quiet?). Our cricket and volleyball players are back into preseason action while the swimmers are churning out the laps. We also have a pleasing number of boys who are working very hard in the gym under the guidance of Elliot Jackson. Lawrence Garufi (Yr. 12) represented Australia in Adelaide recently for the 16-19yrs World Duathlon Championships (5km run, 20km bike, 2.5km run). He finished 13th after being injured for nearly 2 years and retraining since May. Awesome result! This Thursday we will be presenting our Term 3 Sports Awards. The assembly will commence at 11am and our special guest will be Damian Istria (former Australian Gymnast and professional performer Cirque du Soleil). Scott Maguire Head of Sport

Grit and Brussel Sprouts Last week I reminded us of how we all elevated ourselves up and walked. Even with all the falls and bumps we just kept getting up, no medals, no certificates, no ribbons and no trophies. Most importantly no 'I can't' phrases. So this innate effort and desire to achieve (at 10 months) was all we needed. This 'I can' approach is what must drive us through the tough times and reflecting on our walking success is testament to all our internal 'Grit'. Sport at Padua enables us to continually challenge our abilities and resilience. Early training sessions, coming second and the disappointment of not being selected tests our grit. Remember, the people in your life that care most about you will always demand the most of you. Brussel sprouts before ice cream, early morning training sessions even when it's raining and cold and demanding your best even when you are tired, are the real opportunities where your family, coach and teachers attempt to challenge you and show they care for you. Although at those moments you won't realise it. Sport at Padua isn't about score boards it's about reminding you and driving you to be better, to be the walker, the 'l can' person and pushing you to eat vegetables not ice cream. The Sports department make no apologies for doing this. Thank you to your parents, our teachers and coaches for being a part of the journey. Recent testament to this 'I can' approach is Lawrence Garufi. Lawrence represented Australia recently and finished 13th in the World Duathlon Championships. For the last two years Lawrence has been battling injury and doubt, but his grit and perseverance allowed him to compete on the world stage. Lawrence epitomises the traits that Padua attempts to instil in its students. Humble achievement, excellence, grit and persevere. All of which allow for success well beyond the sporting field. Tony Guilfoyle Director of Coaching

Training vs. Competing As we slowly creep towards the end of the 2015 sporting calendar many of us in the sports department are already looking to Training has already begun for many sports and I encourage as many of you as possible to start preparing yourself in one way or another. It is important to remember that training is an integral part in athletic development. If we are always competing we don t get the chance train. Below is an interesting comment from Jeremy Frisch. Training is: Preparing, focusing on weaknesses, 75%-90%, training skill in its parts then putting it back together to be more efficient and stronger as a whole, its slowing things down, it's about feeling the movement, its practice with relaxation, it s about focus, long rest, periods of reflection, it's a time to think things through, make corrections, efficiency, seeking resiliency, boring, monotonous Competition is: chaotic, stressful, anxious, apprehensive, unknown, all out 100%,full speed, high speed, high load, fatiguing, reactive, its over-reaching and executing regardless of efficiency, personal records, emotional, winning, losing, crying, screaming, exciting, So the question of day is: if you are always competing be it the gym, playing games and even in practice etc how are you ever getting better? If every physiological, emotional and intellectual resource is put into competing/winning breaking records every day, when does the athlete get a chance to put on the brakes and focus/figuring out weaknesses and eradicating those weaknesses? How can an athlete make corrections in the middle of breaking a personal record? How can an athlete move efficiently while trying to keep up with the herd? 5 AIC Reports Term 4 AIC Track and Field - Athletics With less than a week to go before the AIC Championships, Padua s Track and Field Team is producing some extremely pleasing results. With our goal to peak at competition time, there have been some amazing personal best performances in the last week. With so many terrific results, it is impossible to mention them all here today, but some of the noteworthy efforts go to, Ryan Ballantine, with a massive personal best in his 800m race, slicing over 11 seconds off his previous time and his counterpart and chief competition Bryn, who took off 10 seconds from his last effort also. Ethan Whyte also proved a formidable contender in a myriad of events, with an outstanding result of 4.02m in the long jump, which is snapping at the heels of an AIC record! With such a small timeframe left, it is vital that all athletes complete all of their last sessions in order to put Padua in the best shape for next week s events. EVERY place in front of another school goes towards us reaching our goal of a top 3 finish. Without your hard work, determination, tenacity and commitment none of this is possible. I thank all of the Paduan Track and Field competitors and wish them all the best for next week s carnivals. It is time to put all that you have worked hard for into practice. Leave nothing behind and work towards our top 3 finish! Mr Out and Mr Yeo Swim Camp The weekend of the 10th and 11th October saw the Padua Swimming Team head to the Gold Coast for our annual swimming camp. At this time of the year with so many activities on it was great to see so many boys taking the time to attend. Our first training session started here, at the school pool, and with a lot of the boys in the water for the first time this season it was a daunting set. However, the boys all worked through it well and gave our coaches a glimpse of the work and determination they were going to put in over the next 4 sessions. Each session the boys showed exactly how hard they were willing to work for themselves and each other. The boys were supportive and respectful of each other and I think, most importantly proved to themselves exactly what they were capable of. With a large number of the boys coming from the junior school it was encouraging for the future of Padua Swimming at AIC. While they all worked hard the team was rewarded with some great activities between swim sessions over the 2 days. Surfing, laser skirmish, team building activities, gym sessions and finally a day at Wet n'wild. The 2015 Padua Swimming Camp was by far the best camp that I have been involved with. The boys all put in a great effort and should be proud of themselves. Looking forward to a great season! Mr D Barnes

Volleyball Schools Cup Over the weekend of the 16th, 17th and 18th, 8 young Paduans from years 9 and 10 competed in the 15 years Division 1 of the Queensland Junior Schools Volleyball Cup. Padua competed against 13 of the best volleyball schools from across Queensland in 8 matches spread out over the 3 days. For most of the boys this was their first experience at a tournament of this level. Two frustratingly close losses, both by 2 points, in tough pool games early on the first day unfortunately relegated the boys to the bottom half of the draw. Every game the boys played they went from strength to strength building momentum that would see them win 4 from their remaining 5 games. Whilst their overall finishing position of ninth is respectable it did not reflect in any way the quality of their play and the development they made as a team throughout the tournament. Of the 6 sets dropped over the tournament 5 of them were by only 2 points. However, the most telling evidence of their competitiveness was when they faced Mountain Creek, eventual gold medalists, in only their 3rd game losing in the tightest of matches and An outstanding effort by all of the boys led by Captain Makalti Henderson. A big thank you to coach Shaun Brake for the time and effort he has put into preparing the boys and the time invested over the weekend. I look forward to working with the boys leading up to next years AIC competition and developing this group of young men as future stars for Padua volleyball. Mr C Nicholson Senior Volleyball Coordinator
