1 INSIDE PADUA SPORT Term 1, 2018 Be Humble. Build me a son who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid, one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. Douglas MacArthur It is good to be confident in yourself and to always strive to be the best you can be. Yet, truly successful people strive not only to be their best, but to be great in how they treat others. Humility is about being modest, respectful, and putting others before yourself. It is not calling attention to yourself or being rude. It is about gratitude. It is about good sportsmanship. Humility is not just for the sports field, it is something to apply to every aspect of your life. It is about being courteous and saying please and thank you all the time, not occasionally. It is about being able to apologize to others even if you are just slightly in the wrong. It is also about listening and open to learning from others. Being humble is recognizing that everyone has different strengths and paying compliments to other people. As a young person, humility is one of the most important things you can develop. Being humble makes you a better person, a better student, and a better teammate. Over 800 Paduans were involved in swimming, AFL, Cricket, and Volleyball on the weekend. This equated to over 70 coaches and managers. A huge thanks to everyone who invested time and effort into having these sports up and ready to go. Unfortunately, due to the rain some cricket matches had to be cancelled and I apologise to those who travelled to venues only to be told that the match was cancelled. We tried our best to get all games up and going but those heavy showers just prior to start of afternoon matches made communication to everyone a touch difficult. Our priority is to have the boys playing sport and sometimes the weather conditions cause some issues that are taken out of our hands. I hope you were not inconvenienced too much. Thanks to those who understood the situation. Congratulations to all teams that competed on the weekend especially to our new students, particularly our Year 5 s. The Year 5 and 6 AFL teams had a 100%-win record over Ashgrove while our Year 5 Cricket teams played some brilliant cricket. However, I was most impressed with the attitude shown by all teams. Gracious in defeat and humble in victory! The 1 st VB played one of the most exciting games I have seen in a while losing a titanic five setter. To fight back from two sets down shows that the team is full of determination and spirit. Attitudes that should hold them in good stead for remaining rounds. The entire volleyball program had a great day against Ashgrove. Well done. The swimmers converged on Ashgrove Friday night with many outstanding performances. Competition for spots in the AIC team will be very competitive. This week we host an AIC Meet at Centenary Pool. AIC RD 2 matches us against SEC. Many teams however will be playing supplementary matches. The Year 5 and 6 teams have a bye but we are hoping to find a friendly match for them. Let s hope for favorable weather conditions and all cricket teams can play on Saturday. Best wishes to all Padua s Sportsmen this week. Scott Maguire Head of Sport
