1 INSIDE PADUA SPORT Term 1, 2017 Integrity Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity. (W Clement Stone) Written by a good friend of mine. It takes many great role models in our lives to teach us the difference between right and wrong. We aren t born with knowing how to. We need to work at it and learn from it every day. Sometimes we might not get it right and that s okay. Continuing to grow in our learnings is a journey and we never stop learning, it happens in our own time at our own pace. This also goes hand in hand with my other favourite quality humility. No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all. A person with integrity; Does what they say in accordance with their values and beliefs Can be trusted because he or she never veers from inner values even when it might be expeditious to do so. Has consistent actions that are honest and truthful. Sport is one of those wonderful arenas where we can develop the most important human qualities such as integrity. Championing good sportsmanship, playing fair and inclusive, and respecting your coach, team mates, opposition and officials are all outward actions that reveal your inner values. Sport without integrity loses its appeal and meaning very quickly. The focus as to why we play sport would be lost and the good coaches would disappear. We need to continue to believe and emphasise that the way we play the game and the way we treat people is the most important result of sport not the scoreboard. INTEGRITY IS EVERYTHING. With Term 1 Sport behind us, I hope you all took the opportunity to thank those that made your sporting experience this term possible. Your parents, your coach and your teammates have played an integral part. I hope you had the courage to say thank you even if those around you didn t. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in Term 1 Sport. I hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break and ready to take on the rigours of AIC Term 2 Rugby, Soccer, Cross Country and Chess. Over the next few weeks including the holidays we have a number of sporting activities occurring. Good luck and best wishes. I hope it all goes well. 2 Areas of Preparation to maximise sporting performance It generally takes more than just being a physical specimen to succeed in the sporting world. 4 areas of preparation are needed to be both mentally and physically ready to perform and these are in no particular order 1. Technical/Skills 2. Tactical 3. Psychological 4. Physical As athletes we need to train all areas to maximise potential during competition. It s also a good idea to identify which areas are considered weak links and put more time into developing these whilst maintaining your strong suits. Each attribute is pretty self-explanatory but I will divulge a bit more. Technical/skills is obviously referring to the technical aspect of the game and skill acquisition. Basically putting time and effort into each skill required for your sport (no matter how simple/basic) to the point where they become second nature. Tactical is referring to game tactics and the game plan that is to be implemented. How often have you seen teams with smart coaches and players executing a quality game plan be successful? Quite a lot! Focusing a lot of time into even the simplest of game plans and your own individual on field expectations can be the difference between consistently winning or consistently losing. Psychological covers more than just your individual game specific sporting IQ. Intelligent athletes are often more successful but generally the best players in the world are regarded as being mentally strong on top of that. Finding a balance between confidence in one s own ability, staying calm and executing under pressure when it counts most and not buckling under the weight of the big moments. How often have you heard about athletes choking when it counts the most and others continually delivering in those same situations? Physical is obviously referring to all the time you need to spend getting your body ready for battle. Everything from Strength, Mobility, Speed and Conditioning training. As above all physical aspects are as important as each other and therefore if there are any weak links extra time needs to be dedicated to improving those areas. All of these areas combined make up the complete athlete. That is of course if enough time and effort is dedicated to each consistently over a long period of time. 3 AIC Results Junior Cricket (Yr 5-7) Rain on Friday night had a few of us a touch nervous, but skies cleared and all games went ahead but one. Unfortunately, the 5GREENS had their last match washed out. The following teams posted great wins against St Patricks on Saturday (7B, 7C, 6A, 6C, 6WHITE, 5A, 5B, 5C, 5GOLD) while the 5WHITES defeated the 5BLUES. Many other teams went down in close encounters. Congratulations to all the boys who played cricket this season. I hope you enjoyed the experience and learnt some new skills along the way. I hope you all thanked your coaches and maybe gave them a small present. Some notable performances on Saturday; 7C Tom O Sullivan 18* 6A Ethan DuPayne 19 and 2/7; Ben Dowling 13*, Mitch Rogers 1/8 6B Sam Peterson 5/7 and 19 runs 6GREEN Harry Lange 10 runs and 2/3 5A Henry Ainsworth 42*; Darby Breeden 38; Will Tozer 36*; Nick Steeden 2/3 5B Kevin Kingsmill 52 off 20 and 1/0 5C Jensen Newitt 1/6; Curtis Stark 15; Lucas Prickett 15 Over the season the 6GOLDs had 5 wins while the 6WHITE, 5A, 5B and 5GOLD posted 4 wins. Congratulations. I look forward to seeing you all playing cricket again next year. Scott Maguire Senior Cricket Padua s Senior Cricket Teams had a successful day on Saturday with 9 out of the 15 teams recording a win. The 9A s recorded a strong win scoring 8/120 and bowling out SPC for 62. Rocco Crawford finished with the outstanding figures of 5/12 off 7 overs. The other winners for the round were the 4ths, 10A s, 9B s, 9 Gold, 8C s, 8Gold, 8 White and 8 Green. The First s didn t finish the season the way they wanted when they got bowled out for 112 runs chasing 165 runs. But the shining light was an excellent spell of bowling from Bayley Roberts who took 6/29 and finished off the SPC innings when they had worked their way into a strong position. A big thanks to all the Players and Coaches for a good season and to Bill Downey at Banyo for preparing good wickets each week. Mr Parle

4 Volleyball The 9Ds were excited to get their first chance to play in La Cordelle and took full advantage of their opportunity by posting the first 6 points unanswered on the back of some quality serving from Riley Bourke. The home team ran away with the first set The boys started the second set even stronger and won the first 10 points until a fightback saw that lead dwindle away to a two point deficit. Scores were locked at but the boys held their nerve and came home the stronger team, The 10Ds were trading points over on Court 1 but managed to generate a lead mid-way through the set which secured a first set win. The second set looked secure at 15-9 until the visitors strung together a series of points to steal the 2nd set and send the game to a tie breaker. The home team regrouped and managed to take the win and finish their impressive undefeated season as premiers. Congratulations to Ms Goodwin and the boys. The 4ths were hoping for a big finish to their season but table leaders St Pat s were not leaving anything to chance and took the first set The home team were down 5-13 in the second and heads started to drop until a glimmer of hope presented itself through some individual brilliance. The resurgence was triggered with Jordan Blauw s skilful, yet unorthodox, reverse spike that was quickly followed by an equally impressive spike block kill. Patty Benstead then bounced a middle before Jordan followed it up next point by serving an ace. Unfortunately, this fightback was short-lived and St Pat's managed to close out the set and the match taking the premiership in front of a vocal group of supporters. The 11Bs found themselves in unfamiliar territory, down 17-9, until Adam Baker stepped up and served the boys back into the game with a remarkable 15 straight points, stealing the set from the shocked visitors. Strong hitting from Bruce Tavaga and serving from Keegan Periera saw the home team quickly take control of the second set. From here, Sam Walsh and Ethan Jorgensen controlled the tempo of the game. The 11Bs finished their season in style, keeping their premiership hopes alive pending the results of the other games this round. The 10Cs were clinical in their first set with a commanding win. Cooper Murray was outstanding with some impressive front court work and killer jump serves. The second set was much closer and each team struggled to string back to back points until Padua pulled away at and forced a time out. It didn t break their focus and they went on to finish the season with another win which secured Padua s second premiership of the day. The 3rds took a close first set, 25-22, with Sam Eastman closing the set out with a powerful cross court spike. The home team ramped up the intensity in the second and at one stage were out to a 17-9 lead before a late fight back from SPC. However, the deficit proved too great and the 3rds ran away with it in the end and secured themselves a well-earned 2nd place finish for the season. The 10As have struggled this season after losing a number of key players at the end of last season. It was great to see the boys finish the season with a strong 2-0 win in front of their home crowd. Congratulations to Cooper Hickey on his MVP performance. The 10Bs have been unlucky with close matches this season but had themselves well placed to turn things around after their first set win. It looked all too familiar when St Pat s struck back taking the second set. However, in front of a home crowd, the boys rallied and managed to hold off a fast finishing St Pat s outfit with a fine win to end their season on a high. The 11As have been impressive this season. After their hiccup against Ashgrove in Round 1, they have established themselves as the premier team in the competition. Today, they were up against a talented St Pat s team sharing first place with them on the leader board. They started well and quickly jumped out by 5 points before passing errors put them under pressure and allowed St Pat s to regroup. Kyle O Brien lifted the intensity with a textbook A which caught everyone by surprise, including himself. With their tails up, the boys took the first set but handed back their advantage when the visitors struck back taking the second. Their extensive preparation last year served them well as they took control of the decider and finished the season with a win and share of the premiership. Congratulations to coaches Angel and Wilson on their tremendous work with the team.

5 The 2nd VI were up against the table leaders and struggled with their passing. Consequently, they were unable to set up any meaningful attacks. St Pat s consistency was the difference in the end as they took the first set. The boys refocused and came out strongly, winning the second set and taking it to yet another decider. The boys have not had a lot of luck closing out third sets this season and have been frustratingly close on their last 3 occasions. Unfortunately, like so many times before, the boys had their chances only to see them stumble at the death and go down excruciatingly close, The 1sts were able to take the court with a full-strength team, the first time since Round 1. An improved passing display enabled them to establish an early 7-point lead with Sean Adams taking full opportunity of some space out wide. To their credit, the St Pat s rallied and their scrambling kept them in the game. Errors began to creep into the home side s game and they found themselves behind for the first time in the game, They eventually lost the set The second set was a different story and another solid passing performance from Finn Keppel allowed the team to play the free-flowing brand of attacking volleyball that they threatened to do coming into this season. This consistency brought our middles into the game and it was the highlight of my day to see the wave of sheer pleasure wash over Daniel Whittaker s face after he crushed a spike through his opposite number, catching the libero in the chest before bouncing into the crowd. The set finished with Padua squaring up the match a set a piece and looking confident heading into the 3rd. The boys now had momentum and, with Makalti s deceptive ball distribution, Kyle McLennan and Harry Fox were now raining down spikes at will. The ever-reliable Sam Jewell displayed his precision as he hit over, around and between the opposition blockers to frustrate the visitors. In the 4th set, the boys ran away with an 8-point lead through power hitting from Kyle Mclennan and Harry Fox. Dan W, Kyle O and Michael were all finding their range through the middle while neutralising the increasingly predictable St Pat s attack. The boys looked comfortable right up to the moment Dan Whittaker attempted his first jump topspin serve on match point which was always destined for the middle of the net. A well-deserved win and an appropriate finish for a talented team that has been plagued by injury all season. A big thank you to Dan Caulfield, Joseph Cox and Kyle O Brien for their valuable contribution this season. Congratulations to Kyle McLennan and Harry Fox for their recent selection in the Qld U/19 Schoolboy Volleyball Squad. Thank you to all the coaches and the wonderful support from the loyal group of supporters in the NEST who stay behind each week to cheer on their mates. Finally, thank you to all the dedicated players who made this such an enjoyable and successful season. AFL Year 5 5A Heading into the grand final the boys were full of energy. The first quarter was a tight physical as expected. Declan held strong through the middle with Bruno holding down the fort in the back line. The second quarter kept with the same pace. Unfortunately, the second half the game got away from us but not once did the boys ever drop their heads. Well done to all the boys for the AIC season and a massive thank you to the parent assistance. 5B The final match of the season delivered the highest quality match we had seen yet. We unfortunately got off to a slow start being down 18 1 half way through the first quarter. However, from there the boys all lifted and played with nothing to lose. Defensively all the boys were exceptional and gave it their all. Full credit to Iona who had to play their best football of the season to take out a close match by 4 points. I could not have been more proud of all the players, all I asked of them was to give it their all and to never give up and they did that displaying true Padua commitment, spirit and teamwork. It was a very difficult task to come up with a best player for the day because all the boys stepped up and played extremely well. However, two players stood out and played tough consistent footy the whole match. George Mitchell and Riley waters if you put them

6 together could model the NRL legends Norm Provan and Arthur Summons in stature (wrong code I know). George used his height well and claimed some strong marks and delivered pin point kicks. The diminutive Riley played like a terrier never taking a backward step to players generally much bigger than him. Well done to these boys a fine match. Lastly, I would like start off with a big thank you to the parents who assisted me during the season in particular Darren Jenkins and Adam Smith your help was invaluable. I would like to thank all the parents and families who supported us all season without your commitment to your boys we would not have had such a successful season. A big thank you to Kieron (5A Coach) for creating a great training and playing environment for all our boys this season all the boys really responded well to you. Finally, thank you to all the Yr.5 players you have been a great group to work with and play in the inaugural AIC AFL competition well done. It has been a real pleasure to have had this opportunity, I wish you all the best for the remainder of the year. Matt Anderton AFL Year 6 - Finals After Friday s unsettled weather, it was good to see blue skies over Yeronga AFL. The 6B team played against Marists an hour later than usual, but were very fast out of the blocks our first goal went through after only two minutes. More goals followed, with the team meshing together so well that our boys drew steadily ahead. They made the ball do most of the travelling, with three or four strong kicks and skilful marks shifting the play from danger territory in front of the Marist posts, straight back to our own goals. We kept up this pressure, complemented by determined tackling and contesting for the ball at every opportunity. Our committed footballers dominated the scoreboard, and the mighty 6Bs ran out deserving the result, winning 124 to 25. The 6As played their typical strong committed team game against St Laurences, lots of great mobility and determined defence, our players tackling, running on and tackling again. The same impressive flow of ball from Laurie s end to our own posts was on show, earning a lot of happy clapping from the appreciative folks under the golden Padua marquee. Laurie s team was up to the task in the first two quarters, and managed to keep the scores close enough for an upset until half-time. Even though some of our players had already poured their energy into the earlier game, they came out with renewed speed and power to stretch their lead in the third term. An inspirational last break pep-talk from coach Jake fired the team up, and they surged across the field like a breaking wave, swamping the Laurie s boys with long kicks to waiting sure hands, again and again. Our defence held tight, and more than once we stole the ball in tackles and charged towards our own goals again. In the end, a well-deserved 88 beat Laurie s 33. Jake and I thank all our hard-working players and their wonderfully supportive parents for a great first season of AIC AFL. More, and better, to come. Cheers from your coaches Mick O Shea & Jake Herring
