It was done to the music of One Less Problem by Ariana Grande. For the middle school, seven girls of the fifteen who tried out make the squad. The oldest girl to make it with the highest scores is appointed as captain. The girls who made the middle school cheer squad are Timberly Hartman, Abby Reed, Kate Bone, Isabella Spiers, Mackenzie Muller, Amelia Lawson, and Karen Gomez. Congratulations to all who made it! We hope you have a great year! Article by Bailee Gray Sequoyah book club Oklahoma honors a native American leader named Sequoyah. Sequoyah played a big role in the Native American language and culture. Sequoyah created the Cherokee syllabary. He basically selected 86 different symbols to represent all spoken sounds of the Cherokee language. Doing this, he was trying to preserve the uniqueness of the Native American culture. At Marietta Middle School, we have a way to be involved in these cultures and traditions. We have a Sequoyah Book Club. The Sequoyah Book Club is a way to recognize a few chosen authors in a contest to see which book the students prefer out of about 15 chosen books. To be involved with the club, you must have read at least three of the Sequoyah books and write a report over each of them. If you do this, you are able to participate in the voting party. Also, if you meet all of the requirements, you are able to be a part in the field trip. This year, the Sequoyah readers get to travel to Lewisville, Texas and go to Cosmic Jump. Those students are Cheyenne Thacker, Rebecca Vinson, Janette Garcia-Perez, Maria Gomez, Ezquiel This year, the Sequoyah readers get to travel to Lewisville, Texas and go to Cosmic Jump. Abby R. Olguin, Samanta Olguin, Abby Reed, and Miriam Cecenas. Cosmic Jump is an indoor trampoline park with trampolines everywhere even on the walls. There is also trampoline dodge ball and slam dunk basketball. I know Mrs. Mayes and Ms. Davis are very excited about the trip along with the students. Maybe next year you can join them! 5 Sports We get really nervous before the track meet starts, but once we start you re not nervous anymore. We just want to win - Monica F. Track I have always liked to run so I decided to join track. I really like it. It s fun. My mom made me run in the summer with her along the highway. We get really nervous before the track meet starts, but once we start you re not nervous anymore. We just want to win. I asked Coach Appelman how he thought the season was going to be. He said, I think it s really good. We have a lot of kids who are working hard. It s going to be a really good season. Softball Article by Monica Flores I interviewed a couple of the 8th grade slow-pitch softball girls. I asked them the same questions. Here were the questions I asked them: Why do you play softball? What position do you play? What is your favorite part of softball? Do you have any fears playing softball? Has slow pitch softball changed from 7th grade to 8th? Are you a starter? Do you like softball and why? I wanted to try something different other than basketball. Basketball is great, I just needed a change. I play left, center, and second strong short stop. Catching grounders and pop-flys would have to be my favorite. Missing a pop-fly and getting hit in the face by the ball! I am a starter. Yes, it is fun, and it is an athletic competitive sport, - #14, Maggie Sanchez. Because I love the sport! I play first base. Getting somebody out on first is my favorite. Getting hit in the face and embarrassing myself! My teammates are about the only thing that has changed, but I have gotten better at batting. Yes, I m a starter. I like it because it s a good sport, #19, Jenna McComber. This is my first year of slow pitch, and the first year playing with most of my team. I love my teammates, and I feel like we all play so well together. The whole softball team is so supportive. They always lift your spirits, and are always pointing out stuff that would help you. Mrs. Gore is always there for you. I can tell this is going to be a good year. 6 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 5 P A G E 6 ADVICE COLUMN Have you ever needed advice, but you were too scared to ask? You thought you would get made fun of for wanting help, or that no one would understand? Now you can ask questions, get advice, and no one will know it s you! In the library, there will be a box with slips of paper beside it. You can write anonymous questions and get advice/answers from your peers in the next newspaper. Advice suggestions Q: What do you do when someone always gets mad and jealous of you and your friends when you do things together and they aren t invited? Suggestion: They can t spend every moment with you. If you guys are friends, invite them on some things. Suggestion: This is a common thing. Maybe try working things out with that person. They might be taking it the wrong way. Q: How do I lose weight? Suggestion: You shouldn t worry about weight too much. You re perfect the way you are. Since you asked, my advice is to find a balance between food and exercise. Suggestion: Being skinny/fit isn t the most important thing to worry about. Your great the way you are. Eating healthy and getting exercise regularly will help keep you in shape. Drink plenty of water and less junk food. Q: I think there is someone picking on me because I m short. I don t know how to deal with it. I ignore them but that s not enough. They constantly call me names. What should I do? Suggestion: First, make sure they know it hurts you. They may think it s a joke. If they keep doing it, start telling an adult or someone that could help. Maybe just try to avoid them as long as you don t start conflict and just keep on ignoring it. You could embrace the fact you re short. There s nothing wrong at all about it. Just laugh about it. Suggestion: You re perfect the way you are no matter what height you are. Whoever it is can t judge you over that. It might be hard, but just try not to care what other people think. Q: If all of your friends hang out in one big group, how do you get along with one person if you re fighting? For instance, at the lunch table. Suggestion: Try to make up with that person. If they don t accept your apology, that s their problem. Don t spread rumors or start a conflict. That s only going to make it worse. If you try to talk to them, make sure they don t take anything you say different from what you mean. If they try to start something, don't say mean things back. Be the bigger person! Suggestion: You don t have to sit at that particular table with those particular people. Try to work out the issue, because you don t want conflicts in your life. Try restarting the friendship and work out the problems so you won t have any awkward problems anymore. Good luck!

7 Get ting to know MMS Teachers & Staff Your teachers and coaches were once in school too. Can you believe it? They participated in some of the same activities you all do. So when one of your teachers or coaches gives you instructions, remember they ve been in your shoes. They might know a little bit more than you give them credit for. We asked several teachers, coaches, and staff what they participated in during school and here are a few answers. Article by Heaven Sustaire Art contests & art - Ms. Corbin Basketball Ms. Davis Track, basketball - Mrs. Lambert Band, football, basketball - Mr. Gallaway Football, basketball, baseball, Beta Club, National Honor Society - Coach Schroeder Football, baseball, wrestling - Coach Hughes Cheer, basketball, FCA, Fish the Planet, yearbook, National Honor Society, mascot, choir, FCCLA - Mrs. Schroeder 4-H, FFA, track, cross country, basketball, Skills USA, VICA, Student Council, National Honor Society, Oklahoma Honor Society, concurrent enrollment, OSSM - Mrs. Jefferson Football, basketball, baseball, debate, Future Lawyers of America, FCA, Stomp team, Native American Club, orchestra - Coach Jessie (You sure about all that coach?) 4-H, National Honor Society, Oklahoma Honor Society, speech, newspaper, yearbook, BETA club, FCCLA, student council, concurrent enrollment Mrs. Dunn Test taking tips Tests are something everyone has to take whether you like it or not. Tests are just a fact of life, but they do have some advantages. Tests help teachers keep track of students progress. Tests also show teachers areas where students need help. Tests can be kind of stressful, so here are some tips on how to relieve some of the stress. 1. Take good notes in class. 2. Try your best to pay close attention in your classes. 3. Get a good night s sleep. 4. Eat a well-balanced breakfast. 5. Don t let other students make you nervous about the test. 6. Have a positive attitude. 7. Take your time! 8. DON T wait until the last minute to show up for a test! Apply these few steps to your routine and you should be able to ace that next test! REMEMBER!! Article by Abby Reed Students & parents: Please make it a point to have your students here everyday from now and through the end of school. Teachers are reviewing everyday for state tests. Also it is so important that your child does not miss school on the day of his or her test. They will still have to make the test up on a later date and possibly miss out on some end of the year activities. The middle school will begin state testing on April 10 and continue through the month of April. Throughout the month on the days your student is not testing, he or she will be participating in rigorous review days. Please plan appointments accordingly if at all possible. Thanks Ms. Heil

8 Guess who?!? The Middle School teachers and staff were gracious enough to submit baby pictures of themselves for this month s issue. We will be having a contest to see which student can guess the most teachers correctly. Contest Rules: DO NOT ask teachers for help!
