2 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 P A G E 2 East central university college day On Tuesday, November 4th, the eighth grade toured East Central University (ECU. While visiting the campus, we did things such as a tour, and also talked with the tour guide about different programs on the campus. First on the campus, we got to walk around and tour the outside of the campus. I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to tour the outside of the campus, but I wish we could ve toured the inside also. I was really looking forward to seeing the campus, but it would have made it better if we could have even just seen the inside of the dorms and the classrooms. The Marietta sponsors were very nice though and took us to the basketball gym and also to the football field. I do think the whole eighth grade can agree on one thing, and that is the food. The food was very delicious, and the whole class enjoyed it. What made the food so enjoyable and delicious is because there was so much variety. I could see myself going to this college, but I would have to see the inside of the buildings because I make that decision. Overall, I think the eighth grade had a fun time on this trip, it would ve just been a little better if we would have been able to visit more things. One of the things that made it possible for this trip was our sponsors, Coach Appelman, Coach Courtesy of Schroeder, Mrs. Dunn, and Ms. Heil. I would also like to say a big thanks to everyone who got the trip together for us, especially thanks to ECU. Article by Abby Reed Cross country canned food drive This year Coach Appelman and the Cross Country teams held a canned food drive. They did this for the Love County Food Bank. I believe it was a huge success this year, thanks to the help we received from all our students - Coach Appelman The classes competed to see which class would bring the most cans. In the middle school, Mr. Oakley s homeroom class won. Between all of the buildings (elementary, middle school, and high school) and the community, they were able to collect approximately 2,500 cans. When Coach Appelman was asked if they would like to do it again, he said Absolutely. I would like to make it an annual community project. All of the winning classes, including Mr. Oakley s homeroom, will receive some sort of prize. Mr. Oakley s class will be awarded with an ice cream party. Article by Bailee Gray Academic bowl Marietta Middle school Academic Bowl was mid-october through the beginning of November. The 6th grade lost all of the meets, but 7th and 8th grade bowl won all of theirs. In Academic Bowl, you go to meets at schools and compete against them. You are asked questions from different subjects and have ten seconds to answer. After the 6th grade team and the 7th and 8th grade team have played, we get to eat and talk with the other teams. The 6th grade members were Ricky Zapata, Alexis White, Kylie Slawson, Madison Lemons, Raymond Gibbs, and Julian Perez. The 7th and 8th grade members were Allison Yahola, Rebecca Vinson, Mackenzie Muller, Trace Stewart, Jacob Carpenter, and Noah Lemons. I like it because it s fun and free food at meets, and it will get you into a better college later, Allison Yahola said. This is Alison s second year in academic bowl and plans to continue through middle and high school. The academic bowl coach is Mr. Oakley Mr. Oakley has been coaching academic bowl for three years. He enjoys it and would like to continue. Article by Kylie Slawson

Overall it was a great season. My favorite part of the season was the pizza party after the Dickson win. -Coach Jessie As I was interviewing him, I noticed he really liked picking on his players. He said I should to talk to Cody Hicks and Coleby Ing. They said that their favorite part of the season was Coach Jessie. Hicks plays left tackle. His favorite part of football was sacking quarterbacks. At the beginning of the season he was very nervous. Ing plays fullback and defensive end. His favorite part of the season was running his first touchdown for the school. When I asked him if he was nervous he said no. For 8th grade football, I talked to Coach Appelman. It was a pretty good season, he said, I coached defense. I clearly think the defense shined. I asked him why he liked football, and he said, It s a really good sport that takes many skills to be successful. Basketball Coach Schroeder is the 8th grade girls basketball coach. His expectations for the season are to get better every game and improve on a daily basis. I talked to Kelly Flores about the season. I asked her if she was excited and why. She said, yes, cause it s my favorite sport. She plays wing. I like basketball because it keeps me going and working as a team, Flores said. Her favorite part is when she gets to play. Coach Messer is the 8th grade boys basketball coach. Here s what he has to say about the season. I think we will be really good. It will be fun to watch. I think it will be a great season, Messer said. Article by Heaven Sustaire Freedom week Tuesday, November 11th was Veteran s Day. In honor of Veteran s Day, the two social studies classes observed Freedom Week. The purpose of Freedom Week was to honor the veterans that have fought for our country and our freedom. The purpose of Freedom Week was to honor the veterans that have fought for our country and our freedom. In the two classes, we studied the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. We also memorized the Preamble. All throughout the week, we learned about how people dedicate their time to fight for our country. We learned how these people sacrifice time away from their families just so we can have freedom. In Mr. Oakley s 7th and 8th grade class, they watched a video titled America: Imagine the world without her. In Coach Jessie s class, we watched a video about how the government works. We also watched a video of the dads who were overseas coming home to their families. Article by Kylie Slawson Miracle League You know what is awesome? Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Lawson, and Mrs. Riley had the idea to start taking a few kids to a thing called Miracle League. It is for kids that do not normally get to play baseball. They took kids from the elementary, middle school, and high school. The middle school students who were able to attend were Jacob Hays, Jacob Wiley, Danny Sanchez, and Serene Horn. The Miracle League was in Lawton, Oklahoma. Each player got to hit, each player got to score, each player got to field, and every batter, at each play, gets a homerun. All of the kids get a partner that can physically help them in the game. The ground was level and made of turf to make it easier for the kids to play on. There is a video at of the kids playing baseball. Article by Kate Bone

4 P A G E 4 N O V E M B E R N E W S L E T T E R October student of the month: Rebecca Vinson The student of the month for October was Rebecca Vinson. She was nominated to be Student of the Month. I asked Rebecca a couple of questions about herself. What is your favorite holiday? Easter, because my family gathers and eats a lot of food and after we have an Easter egg hunt. What are your future plans? Going to a do a 2-year course at Murray State College, then go to a bigger college like OSU. What is your favorite color? Light blue What is your favorite food? Shrimp Where is your favorite place? My grandma s house Article by Kate Bone Red ribbon Week According to redribbon.org, Red Ribbon Week is the Nation s oldest and largest drug prevention program, reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, you people pledge to live a drug-free lifestyle. Special Agent Camarena was an 11- year DEA veteran assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico office, where he was on the trail of the country s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. In 1985, he was extremely close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline. On February 7, 1985, he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers. His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade. Shortly after Kiki s death, hundreds of club members pledged to lead drugfree lives to honor the sacrifice made by Kiki Camarena. These pledges were delivered to First Lady Nancy Reagan at the national conference of parents combating youth drug use. Several state parent organizations then called on community groups to wear red ribbons during the last week of October as a symbol of their drug-free commitment (redribbon.org). By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, you people pledge to live a drug-free lifestyle redribbon.org In the respect of Red Ribbon Week, MMS had a dress up week. The following are the dress up days: Monday Hawaiian day Lei off drugs ; Tuesday Crazy hair and/or sock day Drug free from head to toe ; Wednesday Pajama day Follow your dreams ; Thursday Mismatch day - Drugs are no match for me ; Friday Western day Give drugs the boot. There was a contest between each of the homerooms to see which homeroom class had the most dress up participation. The class with the highest percentage was...mrs. Taylor s class! See Mrs. Dunn for your prize. Also, during homeroom we had 3 minute-to-win-it games set up outside for students to play for $0.50 each. We had a lot of fun and would love to do it again. Article by Ruby Withers Celebration Assembly Congratulations to the students and teachers who received awards during our first Nine Weeks Celebration Assembly!
