1 Janer Journal Living Stations By: Madison Hunsicker We interviewed Mrs. Hrazanek to learn more about all the hard work that made this year s Living Stations one of the best ever. Q: How many students are in Living Stations? A: There are approximately forty eighth graders in the cast and crew of the Living Stations of the Cross. Q: What do you like about Living Stations? A: I enjoy bringing the Passion of Jesus Christ to life each year. It enables our students and teachers to imagine what it was really like for Jesus as he suffered and died to save us from sin. Jesus loves us so much that He gave Himself willingly. I also really enjoy watching the performers transform themselves into their roles. They are nervous and unsure of themselves when they begin rehearsing, but in a short period of time, they really get into it. Q: What makes Living Stations special? A: Living Stations is an eighth grade tradition. Only eighth graders can be in the cast and crew. It is very special to see how my former sixth graders have matured and how they interpret the roles they play. Q: What are some interesting things about Living Stations? A: We use a real crown of thorns for Jesus to wear. It is specially made so it does not hurt him. Two years ago, the cross broke in the middle of a performance! The student playing Jesus had to hold the cross through his final scenes to make it look real. It takes hard work and dedication to play the role of Jesus! We borrow a baby doll every year from preschool for one of the weeping women to hold during the Eighth Station. Veronica s towel in the Sixth Station was hand drawn by one of our former teachers, Sister Raymondine. We remember her dedication to our students every year when we use it. Q: Who are the leaders/co leaders? A: Fr. Kevin Lonergan, Mrs.Swavely, Miss Simone, Miss Condelli, and I all work together.
2 Cup Stacking Tournament By: Molly Munjone On March 19, the Cup Stacking Club finished its season by competing in a tournament at Palisades Middle School. Most of the competitors were from St. Jane s, but there were some from different schools. Some participants came from as far away as Maryland, New York, and Rhode Island. Before the competition, cup stackers got to do doubles, minis, and jumbos. Once it was 9:00, the tournament began! First, they competed in the 3 3 3, 3 6 3, the cycle, then the shuffle. At 11:15, the competitions were over and families got to eat lunch and to do raffles. After lunch, they gave out prizes from raffles, medals, and trophies. Then cup stackers competed in team relays!the relay teams first competed in the 3 6 3, then the cycle. I bet everyone had fun at the tournament. I would like to thank Mr. McGarvey for directing the tournament, and I would like to thank Palisades Middle School for letting us do our tournament in their gym. Religion Bee Winners By: Sabrina Licata & Sidney Bogansky Katie Koons in fourth grade and Alex Kehm in second grade won first place in the Religion Bee during Catholic Schools week. We asked them some questions to see how they felt. Was the Religion Bee hard? Alex Not really. Katie, it was hard. Were you nervous? Alex A little bit. Katie, I was nervous I would get one wrong from the previous year. Were you hoping you would get into the bee? Alex. Katie, I did. Did you think you would win? Alex Maybe. Katie No. Did you think some of the questions were hard? Alex No. Katie Some of them were easy.
3 Easter Egg Hunt Interview By: Gabby Feltmann Gabby got to interview Mrs. Robertshaw, one of the workers who made the Easter Egg Hunt possible, about this year s Hunt. How many eggs were there? 1500 How many people participated? 77 Who did you work with to do this? Natalie Huber, Eva Koorie, and Maryann Kehm. Do you help with other activities? I help with Hawk Walk. How long did it take you to set up the Easter Egg Hunt? It took 3 hours. Do you plan to do the Egg Hunt again next year? Teacher Talk By: Meiko Harris Sivells & Vincent Lauro Why do you like teaching? I like teaching because I like to see kids grow. What is your favorite subject to teach? My favorite subject to teach is reading. What is the dream job for you? I have my dream job! If you could meet one famous person, who would it be? I would meet Leonardo DiCaprio because he is my favorite actor. Why do you like St. Jane s? I went to school here, and everyone is so nice and friendly. What is your least favorite subject to teach? Probably math. What would be your dream? My dream would be to accomplish all my goals and complete my bucket list. Did you have fun setting this up? Do you think this was a fun experience for the participating students?
4 The Legend of St. Patrick s Day! By: Gabby Feltmann Happy St. Patrick s Day! Today we are reflecting on the many legends of St. Patrick s Day. Some of the legends include the leprechaun and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There is also the luck of the four leaf clover legend. Many people believe that there is gold at the end of the rainbow or that the four leaf clovers bring good luck. But where did these legends begin? The leprechaun legend began in Ireland in the eighth century. It began with the tales of water spirits called luchorpan meaning small body. Eventually, it became the leprechaun. If you ever find the leprechaun, be sure to hold on to him. He will barter his freedom for three wishes. Today he guards his gold at the end of the rainbow. Now for the four leaf clover. The four leaf clovers are very rare. The first leaf stands for faith, the second for hope, the third for love, and the fourth for LUCK!! It began with the legend that Eve carried a clover from the garden of Eden. The legend continues today! Those are the legends for St. Patrick s Day! Who Dun It? It was a Sunday evening, and a man was killed while preparing for dinner. Was it the maid, who was getting the mail, the chef, who was cooking dinner, or the nurse, who was watching the children? The maid, because there is no mail on Sunday! If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? The pilgrims, because they came on the Mayflower! A cowboy rode into town on Friday he stayed for 3 days, then left on Friday. How did he do it? His horse s name was Friday!! Gabby Feltmann Sabrina Licata Vincent Lauro Meiko Harris Sivells ~ Newspaper Staff ~ Faculty Adviser: Mr. Dicker Molly Munjone Madison Hunsicker Sidney Bogansky Katie Koons If you would like to contribute to the newspaper, stop by at our next meeting. We meet every Tuesday in Class 2B from 2:00 until 3:15 pm. Come join us! + St. Jane Frances, pray for us +
