Fair Page 8: Graduating Senior Recognition, Clover Kids Page 9: Scholarship Recipients, State Award Information, Additional Activities Page 10: Upcoming Dates DEADLINE: LIVESTOCK ID S DUE MAY 15 by 11:59 PM Livestock identification will be done through 4-H Online ( for ALL ANIMALS THAT WERE NOT WEIGHED IN (Breeding Beef, Bucket Bottle Calves, Horses, Dairy, Dairy Goats, Dogs, Rabbits, Pets, Poultry, Breeding Sheep, etc.). Identification is due by May 15. To enter non-weigh in species, you will need to log into your 4-H Online family record and add the needed information to the Animal ID for each member s record. Weigh-In animals were entered by county extension staff after their weigh-in. It is the responsibility of the member to log into 4-H Online to verify that all information is correct. Information that is not verified by the member within the verification time frame will be locked and will not be able to be changed after May 15. For registered animals, a copy of the registration is REQUIRED. Please bring in a copy of the registration paper that we can keep at the office. Please turn these in with your fair entry by June 1. If you have questions about this process feel free to contact the Howard County Extension Office. Each 4-H member is responsible for entering their own ID s. Directions and help sheets are at enrollment/help.htm Don t Wait Until the Last Minute to Enter ID s!!! The 2018 Howard County Fair is just over six weeks away! Hopefully all of your Livestock Identifications are getting into 4HOnline by the May 15th deadline. Your leaders will be receiving your fair entry forms at their meeting on May 21st, so be sure to make sure to contact them so that you can get them turned in by the June 1st deadline. Also, congratulations to our Spring Fair participants & 2018 graduating Seniors! 2 When: May 23, 2018 Time: 5:00-7:00 PM Where: Featherlite Center FSQA Training Who: All youth exhibiting beef, swine, sheep, dairy cattle, dairy goats, rabbit, and poultry at the Howard County Fair and/or Iowa State Fair. Recently the Extension Council and Youth Committee recommended to use the traditional FSQA training this year. This will be the last year for FSQA. Next year we will be transitioning to YCQA which will involve $12 fee per child per year. Horse Workouts When: Arena Clean-Up (May 2), Workouts will be every Wednesday starting May 9 through June 13 Time: 6:00 PM--8:00 PM Where: Cresco Saddle Club Who: All Horse Project Members Horse Project Members should have received a letter with more information! When: Thursday, May 3 Market Broiler Pick-Up Time: 12:00 PM and 4:30 PM Where: Howard County Extension Office What to Bring: Appropriate sized box with shredded paper for the amount of chickens you ordered. Postcards were sent to those who ordered broilers! Frosty Calving Workshop Unfortunately, the May 2 Frosty Calving Workshop has been CANCELLED! We are hoping that there will be another one scheduled in the future! When: Mondays (Obedience), 5/7, 5/14, 5/21 Thursdays (Agility): 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 Time: 6:00 PM Did You Know? Did you know that by visiting the Howard County Fair page on the ISU Extension & Outreach Howard County Website, you will be able to find all information Howard County Fair related! This includes, but is not limited to: Important Deadlines, Important Documents (Fairbook, Vehicle Information, Code of Ethics, etc.), Livestock ID information, Helpful Tools (Food Exhibits, Copyright Guidelines, Visual Arts Help Sheets), Fair Forms (Photography Form, Poster Exhibit Label, 4-H Exhibit Goal Sheets), and Livestock Entry Forms! The website is filled with great information & can be extremely helpful during fair time. If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to contact the Extension Office! The Howard County Fair Extension Website: Dog Obedience & Agility Classes Where: Ag. Education Center Arena Poultry Iowa DNR If you are exhibiting any of the following at the fair: Canadian goose, Mallard Duck, Wood Duck, Black Duck, Wild Turkey, Pigeon, Pheasant just a few of the more common ones at fair You need to apply for a Game Breeders License. The application is on the DNR website at under hunting, under hunting and licenses and then license application on the far right hand side. A total list of the game birds requiring this license are on the application. 2 Page 2

4 631 Photography Challenge THEME: CAPTURE THE HEART OF AMERICA Have fun and think outside of the box with this theme that will be used for the 631 Photography Challenge at the Howard County Fair! 745 Food and Nutrition Challenge Class 2018 COOKIE CHALLENGE THEME: POTATO CHIP COOKIES Ingredients: 1 cup softened butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 2.5 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups potato chips 2 cups chocolate chips Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cream together the butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Mix in the eggs, flour, salt, baking soda, and vanilla until combined. Add in the potato chips and chocolate chips. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll into balls and place them on a non-stick baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for about 11 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly brown around the eggs. Tip! Practice makes perfect, so be sure to practice your cookie challenge recipes before judging day so that you will be able to bring your best cookie to the contest! Follow the link for more information about this year s fair! Clovernews/2018%20Fairbook.pdf Don t Forget Project Write-Ups! 4-H ers! Don t forget to create a write-up on your fair exhibits! This write-up shouldn t be long, but easy to read as the judge only has a few minutes to review the write-up. The write-up should include the following: 1. Cover Page-Include the following Picture of the final exhibit Name, county, club, age, years in 4-H Class the exhibit is in 2. Report answering the following questions: 1. What did you plan to learn (goal)? 2. What steps did you take to accomplish your goal? 3. What were the most important things you learned? 4. Cost of the project 3. Pictures of youth completing the project Copyright Check the fairbook for full guidelines for copyright. Please remember if you are using the source to create a similar design, you MUST get permission from the source and bring that permission letter to fair. Refer to the help sheet available on the County Fair page on the Howard County Extension s website. Using Pinterest Pinterest is a popular source for getting project ideas. However, you need to make sure when sourcing you are getting down to where it originated from. Be sure to cite the correct site when documenting where your information/idea came from. If you have a hard time finding the original source, contact the Extension Office! Display Board/Posters If you plan to use a display to illustrate what you learned, remember size guidelines refer to ALL project areas. Posters can t be larger than 24 x 36 and display boards can t exceed 48 x 48 (flat). Boxes can t exceed 28 x 22 in height or width and 12 in depth. 5 Page 5

6 Congratulations 2018 Spring Fair Participants!! Howard County 4-H held the 2018 Your Passport to Adventure Spring Fair on Saturday, April 7 at the NICC Cresco Center. Over 55 youth presented over 50 exhibits, including educational presentations, working exhibits, share-the-fun acts, and clothing events! Congratulations to everyone on a job well done! A huge shout out to all the judges, coordinators, county council members, and volunteers for their help in making the day run smoothly. I encourage ALL 4-H members to participate in next year s Spring Fair. It is a great way to showcase what you are doing in school, topics you re interested in, clothing that you chose to wear, and anything that makes you excited! ISU Livestock Judging Camp When: June 11-13, H ers for 4-H Campaign Each year the State 4-H Council sponsors the Iowa 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign, which raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. Their goal has been placed at $31,000! They are ask-ing each 4-H club in Iowa to donate a minimum of $3.00 per member to the campaign. All clubs that meet the $3.00 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate. Contact the Extension Office if your club would like to participate! It is a great opportunity for youth to build their knowledge of evaluating market and breeding animals, including beef, swine, sheep, and goats.
